The Japanese are farming bluefin tuna in huge ocean enclosures. Raising bluefin in circular pens, about 70 meters across, in waters off Kushimoticho, Wakayama. After the fish reach a length of one meter and weight of 30 kilograms and their fat content is high enough that can be sold commercially. Some reach a weight of 350 kilograms. The tuna are fed squid and mackerel.

We need to expand fish farming to the deep ocean as the population grows. Developing countries will soon command more market initiatives. Seafood farmed in cleaner, deeper water can answer the demand.

Just a small comment. This is not a Japanese farm. 00:24 The small boats have Spanish registers (and names). Are from Cadiz, in the south of Spain. Plate numbers 04 - CA (from Cadiz) - and name Purisima (The Purest) (which is obviously not a Japanese name for a boat). They fish the tuna with the Almadraba technique. Why in Cadiz? Because they intercept the tunas while they move from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic thru the Gibraltar strait. This has been done there and this way for many centuries.

by the way, although a big part of the catches get frozen and sent to Japan, in Cadiz you can easily eat fresh yellowfin tuna fish in many ways at a 10th of the price in Japan. What you see at 4:44 is Mojama. A dried part of the tuna. It is a tuna version of Spanish Jamón. Also the meat with (obviously olive) oil.

At least this is farmed raised I am glad they are working on solution to allow the repopulation of tuna stocks in the ocean However I read that Japan would like to raise the quota by 15% in 2022

Yes. I wouldnt be afraid of raising the quota by 15%. The eco-alarmists frighten us but tuna is healthy, tasty and the demand is big, thus fishermen should have right to catch more tuna.

@@starandfox601 The problem is that some animal protectors’ groups want us to stop fishing and eating meat at all. The fishing quotas should respect the both sides: the fish stocks (which are not so low) and the human demand. And the demand is high...

@@lukasbejcek8841 I don't think we should stop fishing.just stop fishing for endagered speices that clearly can't keep up and need a break.there are plenty of other fish in the sea that taste just has good that aren't endagered and breed way faster. They are indeed extermely low.how low do tuna have to go before you Noitce the iusse?has low has whales and otters got considering their populations have dipped so low from over harvesting even with protection to this day they are still struggling? Again high demand is not a good enough reason to increase fishing quotas.that is how you end up wiping entire speices of fish out.

@@starandfox601 Whales are a good example of the protection hystery. The alarmists were crying whales were too low and endangered - and a few years were enough to recover the population. So, Japan has been right to defend harvesting whales. Tuna is a similar case. We have enough time to look for better solutions than fishing restrictions.

Wow. I never realized tuna was so big. I can't quite handle sushi, personally. I guess it's a texture thing, or the thought of eating it raw. I have tried it several times, at good, quality restaurants, but I just couldn't get used to it. Oh, well, I guess I'll just have mine cooked and say more power to those who do enjoy sushi. Variety is the spice of life.
