Harvesting Brazil Nuts and Timber in the Peruvian Amazon

It's a controversial question - can selective logging coexist with Brazil nut harvesting? As part of their livelihoods, many of Peru's Brazil nut concession holders currently do both, but it's not yet know what effect timber harvesting is having on Brazil nut production. To find out, CIFOR researchers and local university students are working in Madre de Dios alongside harvesters in the concessions, measuring nut production and logging impacts.

MUSIC: Special thanks to composer Oscar Alberto Macedo Mejia for allowing us to use his songs "Hermano Nativo" and "Pueblo Viejo", from an album composed for the centenary of Madre de Dios.

I have tried to sprout Brazil nuts. I had no luck. Any advise? The nuts are delicious, like hazelnuts.

Couldn't we help save the rainforests by making Brazil nuts more popular?! I have been thinking that since I read about them coming from mature trees in the wild rather than a farm. I think if there was an ad campaign like pistachios has AND where they come from they would have to leave areas untouched!

I think that’s a great idea. Plus, they are very oily. I would assume the oils could be used for various purposes.

Can we eat as many as we want? I read somewhere that we should eat only one a day, and if we ate 11 or 12 we can overdose and start voliting and having food poisoning...please tell me if this is true? I still haven't eaten them but I'm planning on getting some right away.

***** I wrote that comment before trying to eat many brazil nuts :) after writing that comment, one day I ate about 20 or 30, and I tell you that night I was vomiting and I was like drunk, like overdosed. It may not kill, but it does make you vomit and have dizziness and nausea.

from what I've seen, there is a such thing as selenium poisoning. brazil nuts are very high in selenium. Selenium, within reason, is actually extremely healthy though. 1-2 nuts daily are considered a safe and beneficial serving.

I am sure you could find a supplier right in brazil. Have you tried searching the net? the shipping will probably be as much as the nuts though

What do you mean by fresh? Still in the big pod? I`m in the states and we get them bagged or you can buy them in bulk. I`ve never seen them in the pod here but, I`m sure you could contact a grower and get them that way if you wish. You`ld have to find out harvest times and try then

I can get you some fresh from Suriname ( neighboring country of Brazil ) Do you want to plant them in India? The problem is that the tree only bears fruit when it is accompanied by other trees where specific bees nest. These bees are the ones that pollinate the flowers so it can produce the nuts. To my knowledge there are no plantations that got it right and have nut producing trees. ( only by hand polination ) But if you can get it right there is a lot on money to be made.

It should be illegal to cut down nut trees.

Logging is horrible for the rainforest! Reduces diversity and carbon, even with just 1 tree per hectare. Also Amazonian tree species which are cut for their timber are extremely slowgrowing, trees of several centuries old are more rule than exception. Also tropical timber logging has a negative effect on the biological dynamics of the rainforest which can cause the original tree species to not grow back at all. This makes tropical timber unrenewable, even if it would have a certificate like FSC. There should be a premium price on non-timber products like Brazil nuts so that logging doesnt need to take place to generate additional income.
