Rescued some garlic from my neighbors yard who passed 2 years ago. The idiots working on the property just mowed down the garlic, so I went over and dug up as much as I could. Planted in grow bags last fall, no where else to put it. Harvested about 10 days ago, turned out pretty good, in hind sight I should have amended the bags, had cucumbers growing all summer. I do not know the varieties of garlic, some are kinda purple, just naming it all Martin. So many videos on harvesting and curing garlic, yours was the most clear and precise. Why I did not seek this video out sooner is beyond me. Garlic is still curing, gave some away and will find a better home for it this fall. Enjoy your videos! Stay Well!!!!

Jenna, thanks for the Ohio zone 6 video on garlic. I live in NE Stark County and it is mostly in 6B. late October in '23 I planted hard neck garlic in a raised bed. It's now 6/24/24 and not ready yet. I feel that I should wait until around mid July to harvest. I cut off the scapes 2 weeks ago. Well done on your video, one of the very best among the numerous garlic blogs. So happy to hear from an experienced garlic grower in Ohio.

Hello Jenna, Thank you for the information concerning garlic. The last time I wrote I shared the idea of electrical fence to keep critters out of the garden. It still works for me and if you tried it I hope it worked for you. Also we spoke of growing potatoes in a container. I used a 55 gal plastic barrel cut to 1/3. It appears to be working. Also planted in extended garden area just in case. This process is never ending when it comes to learning, but I love it and thanks to people like you sharing your knowledge has made it doable.

@@GrowfullywithJenna Yes I did and it was perfect. It's been curing for the last week or so. It's not much compared to what those of you with established gardens have, but it was what I could get in the ground fast before winter last year. On another note, my tomato trellis collapsed today. 😞 I'm amazed at how many huge tomatoes are on these plants, the the top pole just bent and then it eventually fell over. I'll try to prop it up tomorrow when it's not 90 out. I can't drive a stake in my ground here because of too many rocks.
@Javaman92

I have much more garlic to harvest this year but I got kinda ahead of myself and pulled half of it a little early. I had planted raspberries in that bed, (it was the best bed for it) and I noticed that the raspberry near the garlic wasn't growing as well as the others so I pulled some. I probably shouldn't have pulled as much as I did however. AND of course the weather (15% chance of rain) turned into 70 % chance since this morning and it rained on the garlic I had laid out outside. It's hanging up on my porch now, dry warm and with air flow. Lets see how different the rest I am leaving in will be in a few weeks.

Great video indeed. A question for all you garlic growers. Some of the garlic in this video are purple in colour and some are just well the normal garlic colour. Is the purple drying or more cured than the garlic that is as I’m saying garlic colour ? I’ve been told the purple has been dried longer. Thanks in advance for any and all answers
@GrowfullywithJenna
@GrowfullywithJenna 11 месяцев назад
Great question! The reason you're seeing variance in color is due to the different varieties I grow. Some do have a tinge of rosy or purple color and some actually have purple stripes (examples include Deerfield Purple, Chesnok Red, Purple Glazer and others). It has nothing to do with the length of drying time.

Jenna. In 7b. Too early? Just received some bulbs. Whatcha think?
@GrowfullywithJenna
@GrowfullywithJenna 4 года назад
I'd definitely wait, late October to early-November would be your best bet. You want to give the bulbs just enough time to get some roots established before they go into the cold, semi-dormant period of winter. If you plant too early you end up with too much tender, green top growth going into winter, making them susceptible to cold damage & stunted bulb growth.

I always leave stems on when curing and skins on when planting. My gut is this offers more protection from potential pathogens entering (particularly the stem thing), but I've not done any testing to prove this.

I'm sorry you are experiencing this. I've not found in my own experience that growing garlic repels worms-- there plenty of earthworms here- in my garlic beds and throughout the rest of the garden.
