Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Felipe Rose, Original Member of “The Village People”
About Harvey's guest:
Today’s guest, Felipe Rose, is an original member of one of the most phenomenally popular and beloved music groups of all time: The Village People, who brought us many unforgettable hits we just couldn’t stop singing and dancing to, including “YMCA”, “San Francisco”, “In the Navy”, “Macho Man”, “Go West”, “Everybody Is a Star in Hollywood”, “I Am What I Am”, and many more.
They had some of the biggest hits of the 70s, and of course, the Village People starred in the classic 1980 movie, “Can’t Stop the Music”. Our guest was dressed as an Indigenous American, along with his bandmates Alex Briley, the military man, David Hodo, the construction worker, Randy Jones, the cowboy, Glen Hughes, the leather man, and lead singer Victor Willis, who was sometimes a cop and sometimes a naval officer.
The Village People had enormous success, with 25 gold and platinum records, an American Music Award, 2 Billboard Music Awards, a George M. Cohan Entertainer of the Year Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And in 2020, the American Library of Congress inducted the song “YMCA” into the National Recording Registry, which preserves audio recordings considered to be "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
In addition to his work with the Village People, our guest has had a great solo music career, recording singles including “Trail of Tears”, "We're Still Here," “Red Hawk Woman”, "Going Back to My Roots," “Dance Again” - and now, his brand new single, “That’s What You Are”.
This single, which was released on June 21, is now available on every major music streaming platform. Our guest has won 5 Native American Music Awards and in 2008, he was inducted into the Native American Music Hall of Fame.

I have to share my Village People story with you. Many years ago I was working on reception at Channel 10 in Sydney. I just sat down in my chair, looked straight ahead and...behold....the entire group were walking down the stairs towards me in their full attire. I will never forget it. A beautiful memory.

This interview is so very special to me because the Village People provided the music that was the soundtrack to my coming out!! Their music made us young gay folks in the late 70s feel cool, hip, sexy and most of all, validated in a very unwelcoming world. Gays and straights loved their music because it was so joyful and danceable! Thank you Felipe for taking the time to grace our show with your presence. You are as sweet and adorable as I always imagined you would be and I absolutely adore you.

I really enjoyed hearing Felipe's story about his life with the Village People and his solo career. I know that "Can't Stop The Music" gets vilified a lot, but it's still kitschy fun. Watch it on a double bill with "Xanadu" on a Saturday night and it makes for a very cool, retro vibe-filled evening. Thanks Harvey for a fantastic interview!

Harvey, there is so much I want to express about this interview, I don't know where to start. First, EXCELLENT interview! ⭐ You always ask the BEST questions. Second, I was living in NYC (mid-70s and 80s) when The Village People were launched. To me, it was such a special time in that city. It was gritty and raw, but at the same time, filled with so much creative energy. So, anytime I hear one of The VP songs, I'm immediately transported to another time and wonderful memories. What I love about Felipe is that he was very open, honest, and direct with his responses, without being mean or gossipy. He's got that wonderful New York trait that love about how they tell it like it is. Thanks so much for this interview, Harvey! I enjoyed it so much that I'm going to watch again tonight! ☺

Oh no you didn't!! Lol. I can literally still remember where I was when I first heard The Village People and trust me, we all went running to our telephones to tell each other. We had never seen anything like this and of course we knew they were blatantly gay. I remember getting into mild arguments with straight friends who insisted that they were not gay and that they were all representative of heterosexual masculinity lol. Loved this Mr. B !!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I couldn't wait for this interview. The Village People were so much fun back in the day. I still have their albums (yes albums) .My favorites were Felipe and David Hodo (construction worker). I went to see them at Macy's in 1980. They were promoting that movie. BTW Harvey was uncharacteristically quiet during this interview. He just let Felipe talk most of the time and Felipe still looking good!

I liked some songs of the Village People, but my mother adored “YMCA” and would often perform it at gatherings. I decided to watch this interview because it’s Indigenous Month, and I wanted to discuss it at work. Recently, we’ve been watching documentaries about the tragic events in the schools during our meetings, so it seemed fitting to watch this interview as well. Initially, I believed the ‘Indian’ member of the group wasn’t actually Indigenous, but I was surprised to learn his father was Apache. Historically, Native Americans were rarely cast as Native Americans in films. However, actors like Tom Jackson, Jay Silverheels, Diehl Bertie, Adam Beach, and Tantoo Cardinal have all been Indigenous actors who have done great work in this area. Kudos to Harvey for highlighting their contributions! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

We teens did not know that the Village People were gay in 1978 - we just loved the music. In fact, not everyone in the band was gay. It was like James Brown meets KC and the Sunshine Band. The Village People took off from where The Trammps left off. The People are part of the line that starts from The Monkees through to New Kids On The Block and BTS.

I would love to see you interview Susan Flannery from "The Bold and the Beautiful" one day. I'm usually not into daytime soap operas but one day I saw an episode and I was blown away by what a brilliant actress Miss Flannery was. @@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 - I've been a huge fan since the 70s and collected lots of stuff over the years. I suppose the word "iconic" could be a bit subjective. Perhaps iconic and popular might be two separate concepts. Felipe fits both well. I consider the original group from 1977-1979 when they had their hits as the iconic portion of the group. From a popularity standpoint, some might choose Victor's replacement (Ray) as more popular just because he was in the 1980 film and was with the group longer. I love them all, but the original group with the hits that I watched on TV shows in the late 70s are the icons to me. Felipe, Victor, David, Randy, Glenn, & Alex.
