I’ve used the GT100 for over 3 years now it’s done at least 600 love shows with me, no exaggeration. It’s the best purchase I’ve ever made, I’ll never go back to an amp and pedalboard. If I do my homework I get every sound I want.
Bought the GT-100 in a yard sale about 10 years ago. I use it as my main effects still, and I haven’t even scratched the surface of this thing? It is amazing!
Leo, I love your videos, love your content and love your charming Italian-English. I find super friendly the aesthetics, the colours and the quality of the equipment around you. I hope you keep it up and that your channel continues to grow. And the most relevant thing: I love your guitar playing. Greetings from Argentina.
Thank you so much Marino!!! This is such a great compliments...comments like this really push me forward trying to make the best I can!!! Thank you so much!!
After considering which modeller, (effects processor) suited my needs best and after checking out the reviews, (including your excellent reviews) I bought the GX-100. I have owned it for a few months now and use it every day played thru my Fender GTX100 using the Return input on it to connect. The GX-100 connected this way uses the Fender amp only as a powered speaker free from the Fender effects. Its so easy to use and set up different tones and plays thru the Fender 12" speaker perfectly. I have also put the online Boss GTX-100 Tone Exchange to good use both downloading tones as well as uploading them. Really pleased with the unit and very much appreciate honest reviews like yours that helped me decide on my purchase.
I think GT100 was amazing when it came out especially when used with real amp. GX100 is a no brainer at this moment - amazing tones, price, and features and no need for real amp. Thank you for the comparison Leo.
Thank you! You did it again. You put again my old unit against unit I was looking in to maybe buying in the future. I have not decided yet, but I think you saved my wallet again from being abused on guitar gear that I do not need. You also have other comparison videos that im going to watch next. Very interesting and very useful channel. It is way better hearing comparison then just someone reviewing one unit against thin air. Kemper Player vs Tonex will be the next thing Im going to watch and comparison of BOSS IR loaders is also a very interesting thing for me. I am looking in to easy to tweak unit for the stage that can tweak sound with a knob without having to rant through some kind of digital menu while playing a live gig or performing at a party. Looks like there is only one way to go for me and this is BOSS ME series multiFX. You are the only one on RU-vid I found who is making so many comparisons, and this is my GO TO channel before I decide to buy anything because I usually find these videos where the units are already comapred and I know what im up against. Have a wonderful day Leo.
Funny that you uploaded this comparison as this past week I have been revisiting my Boss GT-10 to understand if it's worth selling or not. Truth is that the unit still has great tones and signal chain flexibility for a unit from 2008. Where it lacks the most is playing dynamics and the drives sound very similar no matter if it's on the preamp or on the OD/DS blocks. Not having the GT-100, I wonder if it suffers from the same. Thank you for the video Leo.
You are welcome and I'm happy that you like the video! Well, I notice differences especially in the amp tone, where the GX is more faithful, more "amp" sounding... On the other hand the OD of the GT sounded good...but I don't know how the GT 100 compares to the GT 10... Thank you once more!
I have the Boss GT100 and after some years I bought the Kemper. I didn't use the Boss for years, and recently I dusted it off and started to play it again. I use the crunch tones and cleans and distorted sounds.Hendrix, Maiden, etc. I am very surprised how it is still a very good gear for these genres. It will not be good for modern ones like djent, you won't have that "oof" and tube amp distortion but for anything else it's still solid. You need to tweak it though and to know what you are doing.Built in pedal is an extra candy.
Thank you Leo! Great comparison as always and a really fun demo tune! I like the idea of the GX but have to say, I MUCH prefer the computer app GUI of the GT that you showed in this video 🙂 Thanks again!
I have a few tube amps that I’m working so many years. Recently I decided to buy the UAFX Woodrow 55 (amp in a box pedal). Sounds exactly like a real amp. This pedal is now my go to pedal for my recordings. Technology is on our side ;)
Good video! I don't know if GX100 has the resonators. Maybe the GT100 doesn't have the IR capabilities, but the resonators are quite powerful to shape the sound.
@@christianpacode I guess Antonio means Tone modify effect which (using one of its modes) simulates the resonance of the cabinet. There are three differrent ones, at leats in the GT-8 and I would expect the same effect on the GX-100 as well, while maybe it is overshadowed by the IR technology.
This is undoubtedly a great video, and a much needed video. Also Leo you are a very good Guitar player. In my opinion both the units are good , i will continue with my GT-100 I agree to operate the GT100 basic theory of audio is required and I guess its the same for all other brands as well , other then one or two i never found any preset on any processor close to the sound that i want, to me presets are just an idea what an unit is capable of rest you have to customize with proper knowledge to get the tone you are looking for, its not the processor alone that will determine the tone, the guitar used is a big and first source of the tone .different type guitar will produce different tone even in the same tone setting of the processor,
Thank you so much, I'm really happy that you appreciate the video! Yes, the guitar has a big impact on the tone...especially considering the type of guitar, I mean Strat or Les Paul...etc. Thank you!
I'd definitely go for the GX100. I have an old Boss GT-6, and though the sounds were pretty good, many of the knobs have failed, and replacement parts are not easy to find. The improvements in the User Interface alone are worth getting the newer model, based on the time consuming difficulties I had with my GT-6. I now have an HX Stomp.
To my ears, the GX is richer in tone. Especially in the lower mids. This could be due to the IR improvements. Also, the string separation is better. If the brighter strings are played, the GT gets digital by a lot. The GX sounds more natural to me. However - in the mix, I didn't notice a lot of improvements for me to justify an upgrade. I'd rather check out every available unit at this price point to find the best one for me. Every unit has strengths and flaws, so we need to become clear about what is important to us. I'm playing the Helix, which is not "the best" but suits my needs. There are many units on par and there is no "the best one". Thank you for another great comparison!
You are welcome, I'm happy that you like the video!!! Thank you also for sharing your experience and your findings!!! Also for me the GX sounds much more natural...in the mix it hard to ear the difference...but when you play the guitar alone, the differences become more clear... Thank you!
@@LeoGibsonGtr Sure it sounds different, but higher gain tone always have a similar sound through these types of devices. The real test is trying to get a useful clean tone from them. That, in my opinion, is where they separate the toys from the real gear.
Hi, let me add that one of the most difficult thing to imitate (in my opinion) is the edge of the break up tone, and the cleaning up or break up that you can obtain pushing softer or harder the strings. Thank you!
Hi Leo! Great review!! There's a notorious difference in both unit's sounds. As a GT100 owner, I've always felt that crunch effects were less organic compared to the clean or heavy distorted tones. And it's true, the learning curve takes longer. It could be awesome to make a video about how much you can improve the sounds of a GT 100 using the unit's preamps and external IRs in the FX loop. I have a Nux Solid Studio and I'm trying to replace the cab sims. How far can it go compared to nowadays units? Thanks!!! 🙌🏻
If you own a GT-100 and are playing live into the effects return of guitar amp, I imagine the difference in sound would be negligible. Also, remember, your speaker IS your IR. The only reasons I would consider the GX is the smaller size and ease of patch creation. Though the newer amp models would be interesting.
Nice SONG by the way … I Enjoyed it 🤗🙏🏽👍🏽 I have the GT100 … but still never learnt how do use it to the max yet … After hearing what you did with the GT 100 I’m impressed Maybe one day I may upgrade … But I figure I better try and get the best out of the GT100 since I already have it 🙏🏽🤗🙏🏽 The GT1000 was just too much for me … And besides … I light more mellow sounds than ‘rough’ sounds .. I like nice acoustic guitar sounds .. and jazzy guitar sounds
Boss have at last lerned from their mistakes on the GT100, which i found frustrating to use. As soon as my local guitar shop has them instock i will check it out. This is a market full of wanabe's that just won't offer the backup that Boss can. Thanks for your excellent video Leo.🙂👍
Assuming the menus were like it's bigger brother, the VG88? I had one and used it live for years, that thing was a bitch to program. Mainly user it because I could switch tunings on the fly.
Leo, excelent video, seeing just now. I own a GT-100 and and it is such a great modeler. As commented above, I am not sure the GX will make a big difference in the mix, anyhow, heading to US from Brazil later in the year I might upgrade. I do like the pedal push type style of the the GT and am curious to know if you or someone here could tell me how it compares to the GX, knowing the GX has the push button style. I have a pretty large feet and fear that these buttons (from the GX) are not far enough one from another and that would compromise hitting two buttons at the same time. Are you able to comment on that? Thank you and congrats for your song and very good comparison.
Actually for work and playing i still prefer old GT100 sound . It is easier to use compare to GX100 in the band . Is there any way to use GX100 play GT100 sound
I have both of those surprisingly I got the best compliment on my tone from the GT 100 the older unit The GX 100 sounds more open and expressive like a real amp
The concern of the GT100 is above all its completely bad ergonomics compared to the old GTs, the sounds are still very good... The other default is the lack of possibilities for the chaining of effects, being able to put an overdrive and a distortion together is complicated The GX still seems much more user-friendly
If anything they sound very similar in a mix. When you played lead line it was pretty indistinguishable. The only reason I'd buy the GX over the GT would be for the user interface which is hands down a better interface.
I've been looking for an answer to this question for quite a while now; what's the difference between AIRD/IR & COSM? Is IR better than COSM? I won't mind lengthy essay of answers, if someone is willing to school me on this.
I’m at least glad the GY-100 still sound pretty nice enough … I couldn’t hear much of a difference in quality of sound , though I imagine there might be … But at least to a general audience the GR-100 still sounds pretty nice
I broke out my old pocket pod the other day. About thirty percent of the factory presets are actually pretty good. I was thinking of selling it but I’ve changed my mind.
I still love the organic sound of GT -100. You can't go wrong with the pedal if you know what you're doing. With GX-100, too digital, it's just another hype.
I feel like this comments makes me laugh a little. Hating on the newer one when it is objectively easier to dial in a not so digital sounding tone 😂 don’t get me wrong I like the gt-100 still and I even use a gt-1 live sometimes but, my hx stomp just sounds better and is easier to work with so I am not going to even try to play that card lol.
The gx100 is a "better" box, but lacks some of the bite of the gt6 i had. The gx100 pedal for whawha takes longer to get used to and the sound is not as good for me.. Improved? Overall, yes, but something is missing... Keep in mind it took me 3 years playing live 6 days a week to program the gt6 to do what i wanted, and with the gx100 I'm almost there in a short 5 months! I'm a professional guitarist who needs the box to do everything, not using an amplifier live
I've had Digitech RP-1000, Boss GT-3 and GT-100 and none of them are doing a great job with overdrives, and certainly not with distortions.. any comparing thoughts on the GX-100? (I could finance a GX by selling my stand alone overdrives and distortions, if I dared) ;)
Hi, it's hard to provide you a black or white answer, I like the distortion of the GX 100, but it's my opinion. I would suggest you to check out my demo review of the GX 100. Thank you!
I am using Helix Lt. At home with a combination of Yamaha HS5 and computer (with XLR cable) I get pretty good saturated sound on my DAW. My input level indicator in the DAW already states that it's okay without any peaking. However, when I connect to the mixer and Cabin with 1/4" cable in the studio, or when I bypass the Marshall amp+cabine, bypass the amp and enter the cabin, the sound is very weak. Every time I go to the multi output settings in my patch and I have to increase the volume by 8 to 20 dB. But then there is an imbalance between patches. I think I need a poweramp. But the Ohms of the poweramps are different from each other and I don't know what kind of poweramp I should buy. Dear Leo, can you please make a video explaining the FRFR, mixer, poweramp and cabinet connections of the Amp simulators? these links are correct? Helix effects > Helix amp > Helix cab > Sound Blaster Helix effects > Amp > Cabinet Helix effects > Helix amp > Power amp > Cabinet Helix effects > Helix amp > Amp effect return > Cabinet Helix effects > Helix amp > Helix cab > Mixer > PA Helix effects > Helix amp > Mixer > Power amp > Cabinet
All these paths you listed are possible. Helix effects > Helix amp > Helix cab > Sound Blaster Helix effects > Amp > Cabinet Helix effects > Helix amp > Power amp > Cabinet Helix effects > Helix amp > Amp effect return > Cabinet Helix effects > Helix amp > Helix cab > Mixer > PA Helix effects > Helix amp > Mixer > Power amp > Cabinet Line-level signal (coming from a mixing board, audio interface or guitar processor) is not powerful enough to drive a cabinet by itself without a power amplifier, as you discovered.
And the gt series feels better in the hands. I can't get anywhere near the tonal variations i got on the gt6 with guitar volume levels and an 80's DS1 on minimum distortion
I thought the difference in sound would be way bigger, in this example the difference is fairly small but the GX-100 sounds better in my opnion which is not surpricing. Out of these two I would of course get a GX-100, there are many advantages even the size/weight is a significant advantage. The GX-100 is currently one of the top contenders for me together with the Line6 POD Go if i were go get a floor modeler. That said, it seems that if you already have a GT-100 then there is nothing wrong with continuing using it by the sounds in this video.
Hi, in my opinion in a mix the difference is less evident, but it becomes more clear when the guitar is alone. The GX (in my opinion) is more natural and more close to the real amp. Thank you for sharing your findings!
Hi Leo I'm really confused , I'm MG-30 owner and I would like to upgrade to something midrange with more foot switches for live and I/O as at least Midi and send and return and a better tweaking capability or at least a real amps behaviour ,I mean low gain equal almost clean etc ... MG 30 give you just mostly one channel options even it sounds well. I'm really confused even I'm following, what you would you suggest for an easy straight chain without parallel or stereo effects ?
Ciao Leo.
Line 6 POD 2.0, Johnson J-Station, Vox ToneLab Le...with today's IR's ...vs POD GO, Headrush, MX5, Boss GX100......That is a 20 year difference to the winner should be obvious.......but is it? Some people may be very surprised.
Hi, I don't have the simplifier, therefore I can't tell. The Iridium can give you good result, even if the simulations of the Iridium are already inside the GT 1000. Thanks
If you have neither, the GX100 is clearly a better buy. (I don't understand why the GT100 is still so close in price). However pairing the GT100 with an IR pedal (even a Mooer Radar) vastly improves the results.
Leo I'm kinda stuck I think I'm going with this gx100.but there are so many.is there another unit in this price range that I should be considering.any help would be great thanks
Hi, well the GX is for sure a great option for that price...you may check out the HX Stomp XL or the Ampero Stomp. NUX if you want to save some money or Valeton GP 200 for the 8 foots switches. Thank you
Hello leo , thanks for the great video!! I have question and I’ll be very happy if you can help me please 🙏 Is it possible to transfer the gt100 patches/tones to my gx100 and how ? Thank you 🙏
Hi, thank you, I'm happy that you like the video! I'm not 100% sure, but I think it is not possible to transfer automatically parches between the two machines...if someone has different info, please drop here a message!
I can get it in gt 100.. using soldano, modern dual rectifier, power drive, evh 5150 + Tube creamer or other OD + EQ + time related effects at the end of the chain..
