We're right in the middle of the calendar year now and that means we've got at least 6 months of our succession growing plan to review. How has the year been soo far? Am I still on track with my vegetable garden? How are the blackberries looking after learning to tie them in last year? Did the vegtrug work? Are the strawberries producing bountiful harvests? And how much garlic have I lost to rot? And I’m dealing with strawberry runners all while chatting to you guys about my experience of growing my own fruit and veg this year.
We've done so much already this year, so I've had to split this video in two. This video is Part 1 of a full review of this year's sowing, growing and harvesting in our Scottish garden.

Hi there Eli, what a great idea having the hanging pots for the strawberry runners. I have those pots too hanging on my potting bench. My strawberries did really well last year but I haven’t planted any this year. Great to have such an in-depth review of the veg trug too, very useful. I have thought about getting something like that myself. Perhaps I’ll try some onions and garlic as yours look so good. I do love your wall planters in the chillooterie 😊 looks really attractive. It’s good to see how full your greenhouse is, being really well utilised. Fabulous video 😍

over here in Germany it is a great strawberry year so far . Apart from losses thanks to slugs great harvest so far 😋

Oh you should be cutting and enjoying your green onions/scallions now and they will just keep producing more every time you trim them down. Your garden is doing much better than mine here in N. Ireland, like you say the rain has been horrendous, it's been tough going! Your garden looks amazing so colourful in every way - Go You and Go Kate with her spray paint 😀

Loved the video as always Eli. I grew onions for the first time and so far so good, same with the garlic. I've sown far too much lettuce, we cant keep up, so definitely succession sowing for me next year. A few seeds of each variety. Your garden looks so lovely. Thanks for all the tips as always.

Hi Eli, can I suggest cutting off all your runners to allow your fruit to ripen? The plant will put a lot of energy into the runners instead of ripening the fruit. I tried it this season and worked really well 🙂 more runners will grow later anyway. You can put your runners in pots of water to root as an alternative method to making new plants. Hope you don't mind me passing on this tip? Some good tips on growing new plants. Your garlic is looking good. Had to harvest my garlic 3 weeks ago due to rust never had it before so, put they all came. I have blended all the garlic and put into ice cubes and frozen. Then, lifted them out, wrapped each ice cube in foil & put into a tub and back in the freezer. So when cooking, i just take out what I need and add to my cooking. No waste 🙂 I'm not growing from sets next season as I have grown from seed as well and are growing well, samexas you, a lot have bolted this season. All your produce is looking really healthy, love your videos as there is always lots if information & advice too. Thanks for sharing and take care 🙂

I am about same latitude in US but winters are colder. I had a perfect strawberry system where I planted in tubs with net pots that dropped into a rain gutter on a deck. It was self watering, grew the best berries and very little weeding. They were up on the deck built to hold rain gutter and the square tubs rested on deck with net pots in gutter which gave them some height. However the strawberries can't take our cold out of ground so would have to sink tubs into ground every year. I tried covering in place and lost several. So I'm back to in the ground. I don't like it and neither do the berries. Too many things attack them, they are always thirsty and it's breaking my back. I grew up with in ground berries and it's a lot of work to keep weeds out and like playing a game of Twister.🤣 I am getting older and rethinking my garden strategy as I have 6 garden areas and it doesn't include a wildflower meadow I'm trying to create in which the native horsemint is taking over. The eczema that appeared on my hands last year isn't helping. So I need to create a better set up that can be irrigated with drippers or soaker, just not sure how they work as my experience is drippers need to be at plant location and soaker seem to be dry in some areas wet in others and don't fit the beds. Not sure how to do drippers if you move plants around. And then how to hook many beds together. It takes A long time to water. If you know about these or other irrigation methods, please share.😊 Thank you and enjoy your videos.

I've used paper clips as garden staples. Just straighten them out, make a U or V bend and they work as well as garden staples for pinning strawberry runners.

@@eliandkate paper clips just seem to appear, I don't buy them. They're my odd bits of material that I rarely use for the intended purpose. I end up repurposing quite a lot of stuff around the house for the garden.

Thanks for showing the garlic. This is my first year growing it here in Massachusetts USA zone 6B. I harvested and cooked scapes for the first time, thanks to you! Amazing. I am also trying to succession see but it’s been a bit of a challenge. Thanks for being honest and saying it has been for you as well.

Too funny, I thought I was the only one to plant way too many spring onions. I have given loads to the neighbors, frozen some and we eat them with almost everything. We should consider this garden success! I'm working on getting succession planting right, it's a work in progress. Everything lots lovely. :)

Great video. I think for the price of the Veg Trugs its a bit poor to not have pieces that fit properly. Good review. Raised best are looking great, shame about the garlic, but you live and learn. Looking forward to next week alredy :) Also I'm going to try garlic next year as I really want to join the scape eating gang.

As you started talking about your garlic woes I ordered bulbs online for my autumn garden because last year’s were a bust. The elephant garlic comes out this week, but it was an experiment in grocery store bought bulbs so I’ll see how they look once out. Onions - on my second and third beds to harvest today, but I chop all up (including greens) and freeze in baggies for winter cooking. Even the scapes get chopped to eat because once cooked they’re delicious 😋 in soup, eggs, etc.

We’ve had rain almost every day this spring! Toes are webbing. The forests and valleys are lush but I’m afraid stuff is drowning, a few yellow leaves… alas… Nakusp BC Canada. Take care. Your garden is soooooo lovely.

I'm hoping to use succession planting once my greenhouse is built (we have a particularly gusty day today and it doesn't seem to be moving at all... that was always a big question given I'm building it myself ;) ). I'm hoping to sow a range of veggies every two or so weeks and as they grow, plant them into the actual veggie patch. Who knows if that will work... but I like the idea (and maybe some things that just perpetually grow in the greenhouse).

Have you ever thought of buying a dehydrator? You could dry the onion scapes/ leaves to make a green onion powder. With the spinach, cabbage, cauliflower leaves you could dry and make a green powder. Both powders come in really handy all year but extra handy during winter to add to soups, stews and bolognaise etc.

Great setup you guys have for the strawberries AND the pots for the runners, how cute! I love strawberry runners…free plants forever🤣! I’m sorry about your garlic. For next year could you put a piece of clear plastic over only the top(so there’s airflow on the sides so basically it’d just be a roof)? *Random; as I’m watching you just asked Kate about the scapes and I’m currently in the process of chopping scapes for breakfast😂. I think this year I’ve realized my garden plan is much more of a guideline😅. Your garden looks beautiful and WOW that greenhouse! Thanks for the update!

Don't worry about that Eli, just take the runner off, cut the bit you are going to pot on each side, and pot it up. It will root without the plant then. It roots really quickly. Thank you for the video, it looks so sunny there.

Where you over planted spring onions, I went to town with radish. I planted far too many at the same time where I should have seeded probably every 2 weeks and just enough for our own use. Great show guys and can you post how you make your iced coffee.😀

Possibly check if it's a good idea to have Pineberries in the same bed as Strawberries. When I was researching them before planting this year I saw a lot of growers say to keep them away from Strawberries - the Pineberries lose their unique flavour and the Strawberries lose intensity. I ended up planting mine in separate beds at opposite ends of the garden to be safe. This info might be completely wrong of course but I saw it in multiple places.

Great video, so much helpful information, thank you. Growing Loch Ness for the first time this year and wondered when next year’s canes will arrive and how easy they are to recognise, sounds silly but don’t want to ruin next year’s crop! Thanks again for all you do.

Nooooo not silly at all…. I was all at sea trying to work things out that year. You will absolutely recognise them….. they came in after we were harvesting so I think late autumn they got big

Could I treat raspberries the same way? Hubby planted them against a fence so tying in would be easier than me building a frame.

Yup you can…. But different on when to prune though, so you’d need to look into that.

Great idea for the strawberry runners. A flower box/window box in from instead of the pots could hold more little plants with more comfort.

Great video as always! I pin my new strawberries in the soil with unfolded paper clips. I keep them out there clipped on the side of my Green Stalk planter until the moment I need them. Very wet spring here, too. Ugh

Ate my first blackberry fresh off the vine yesterday. First year planting, and I've been patiently waiting for the primocanes to be long enough to train along the garden fence. We went from having 12" above normal rainfall in May straight into dry 100 degree F temps in US Southern Plains. Your garden looks wonderful!

@@eliandkate Watering morn & eve, extra care with anything potted. No relief in 10 day forecast. :( Low temps and rain made everything puny. I thought the garden would never take off! So far, so good. A couple sunscald tomatoes and peppers, but overall good, but dare not miss a watering!!

The onion stalks could be blended into an onion pesto or onion dip. Very full onion flavor but some of our guests loved it last year.

Didn't do garlic this year but thanks for the warning I will put vermiculite or something in that soil when I do it next year. Very wet in out area! We've got strawberries here, so you won't be far behind those on the side look nearly ready! Since onions are so cheap at the store I don't have a plan to do them, and blackberries are down every road in Ireland in the hedge. I take a walk down the road in September with some plastic take a way tubs and fill em as I go, so I don't bother with them either. I HAVE got loganberries! Will let you know how I get on with them. I am following how you are doing with the succession planting most of all. Will you do a review of that at the very end of the year? Your garden is looking amazing as usual, enjoy June and all the fun of getting lots of goodies from your garden! :)

They just need some soil somewhere, could be in the basket or outside if you can find a way to hang another basket of pots or something

The conventional wisdom is that allowing runners reduces fruiting. I’ve just spent a whole Radiohead album removing runners and Strulching my strawbs. I’ve no idea whether there’s any truth in that gardening advice.

There absolutely is truth in it but as it’s also recommended to replace the plants every three years saving the runners in that last year saves you buying new plants 😍😍😍

I grow my strawberries in hanging pots and one whiskey barrel. Everytime I try to put thrm in a raised bed it's a disaster. I also got a tower that doesn't seem to work very well either. Anyway, I have to trim my strawberries back all the time and when I do I tend to get an explosion of strawberries come on.

@@eliandkate I saw :) I have no luck in beds I don't know why. The bed I used is at thr bottom of thr garden though (it slopes down a bit) so maybe there's just too much water, but oddly it wasn't enough water for my cranberry bushes. 🤔 So, I'm not really sure.

Hey Susan Pakchoi perpetual spinach and mustards we basically add them to things we are cooking so usually sauté Great in stir fries etc

Always learning and love your videos. quick question I too am growing the rocrkapchen tumbling tomatoes, they are doing really well, I have 2 inside and 2 outside - do you nip out side shoots in tumbling tomatoes? I haven't, just my moneymaker ones. Is that right ?

You only nip out the shoots on bush tomatoes so if your tumbling toms are the bush variety I’m thinking of, then you traditionally wouldn’t but defo go check before you do anything

Great video and perfect timing with the discussion on strawberries and onions. I am thinking about trying to grow garlic for next year that information is great. How much mulch do you put over top of the garlic when you plant it in the fall. Because of our low temperatures in winter I wonder how much protection do they need. Also how late into the fall do you plant your garlic?

This was the first time I’ve mulched garlic and gave it about an inch of straw but thinking that was a mistake… it maybe held the water in… Planted in nov I think…

They are relying on the mother plant until they have their own roots yeah…. The long runner is kinda like an umbilical chord

Because they take energy from the mother plant you can wait after you picked the first flush of berries. You also can make designated runner plants. So instead of 9 plants with 1 runner you can have 3 plants with 3 runners. If you really go for the most berries on a plant. Then the first year you cut away the flowers, let them get established. Second and third your you pick berries and then you throw the plants on the compost bin.

Oh yeah we did, that was why we originally put the nets over the beds… will need to see how it goes this year

Hey Cheryl, I’m assuming you’re asking about non chemical type things so best thing you can do is to just keep disturbing the nest to encourage them to move. You can use nematodes for exactly the same purpose, it gets them to move on but they aren’t cheap. The ants themselves (if you’re in the uk) don’t really do any damage but you don’t want them to begin farming aphids which is really the only worry. Any on the food when you bring it in can be shaken if washed off.

Ha ha ha exactly that… they actually farm them like we do cows… honestly go have a Google… makes for an amazing read and you’ll developers a serious respect for the wee beasties
