The OverDrive guys discuss Mitch Marner's contract and if the AAV will impact the other on-going RFA negotiations, and talk about the amount of money other RFAs should be asking for with Marner's deal now set.
Marner's contract has only negatively affected othe RFA contacts by being overpaid and making other skilled RFAs believe that their current team is stupid enough to do something similar for them. I don't believe that Marner's point production accurately reflects his value in that Marner is a playmaker on a line with an all-star goal scoring centreman. Winnipeg's Blake Wheeler just had back to back 91 point seasons, is in the 1st year of an 8.25AAV for 5 years, and is the captain of his team. I can't agree that Marner is 2.6 million more valuable to his team than Wheeler.
Fun activity for you. Look up the NHL players that have put up at least 90 points in a full season prior to signing their second NHL contract (after ELC) in the cap era. Once you have the list then look up their second contracts in term of the percent cap hit and the length of term. You will find that Marner's contract isn't actually a huge overpayment.
They aren’t happy until they bleed their team dry. So many core guys on Stanley cup winning teams took deals that were team and player friendly. They still got their multi-millions...but understood they were still only a PART of the machine that’s needed to go all the way. IMO, these kids on the leafs simply chose not to do that. That’s fine, it’s their right, especially if the GM eventually gives in, but it’s such a fine line to win the Stanley cup and often times, it’s that 2 or 3 million dollar player that a team acquired that becomes the hero in the playoffs and scores that net front goal or blocks that shot, etc etc that results in the Cup win.
Yo check this out, it's a bit much but I promise you it's worth the read. #1. Marner. All the people saying the Leafs have outrageously overpaid Marner, he is 4th in assists in the entire NHL and he is now commanding a $10.8m cap hit this season. The assist leader was Kucherov. Kucherov will cost the Lightning a cap hit of $9.5m this season. Second in assists is McDavid with a $12.5m cap hit as deserved of course. Third is Blake Wheeler, his cap hit is $8.25, but he put up less points and is also 33 years old. So I would say Marner is in the neighborhood of other players of his playmaking caliber, and considering he is only 22 YEARS OLD, the Leafs can pay a little extra to lock him up for his prime seasons. #2. Tavares. There isn't much to say, the man is 28 years old in the middle of his prime and just came off a season in which he was 3rd in the entire NHL in goals at 47. Tavares is proven, he is a 6 time allstar and a Hart trophy finalist. He has also had increased goal totals in each of his last three seasons. Tavares commands a cap hit of $11m this season. The top goal scorer was Ovechkin and his cap hit is just $9.5m. But before you freak out, just know his contract was signed in 2008! That is 11 years ago! Imagine what it would be now! The Capitals now look like geniuses to give him a 13 year deal, just saying. #3. Matthews. This one has been up for debate all summer. Auston Matthews will cost the Leafs $11.6m in cap this season. His health of course the biggest concern as he only managed to play 68 games this season. In those games however, he compiled 37 goals, good enough for 17th in the league. Matthews had 0.54 goals per game. So with 14 more games played he would finish with approx 44 goals. Those 44 goals would put Matthews tied for 5th in the NHL with Patrick Kane. Kane this season will take $10.5m in cap space. Not too far off from Matthews. Don't forget that Kane is also 30 years old and heading out of his prime, and his contract was negotiated in 2015. Matthews sits at just 21 YEARS OLD and the Leafs have paid the extra $1m to secure their franchise talent for 5 years as he heads into his prime. In conclusion, I believe it will be tough for the Leafs to juggle mutltiple large contracts. However the contracts themselves are not as outlandish as people put out to be. I believe if all pans out then looking back in 3 or 4 years the Leafs contracts won't be so "overpaid" as they look now. Just wanted to give some food for thought on this contract debate.
@D Laws I thought you said it would be worth the read? It wasn`t and I am not trying to be mean, but when you leave out term on the contracts then its only half the story! If Marner signed the same contract for 8 years and Matthews did the same then a lot less people would be complaining! McDavid is the best in the world and Marner is being paid about the same as him (factoring in length of contract) and Matthews is being paid more than McDavid (when you factor in length of contract). This makes Matthews and Marners deals GARBAGE!
@@creepyrobsta5509 it speaks volumes how the Oilers have bargain deals with McDavid and Draisaitl and STILL can't make the playoffs. Leafs will still be a playoff regular even with these grossly overpaid contracts.
Roller Cain hahahaha “playoff regular”. Look who’s struggling with the playoffs now, leaf boy. oilers are seeming to hold onto their spot. you leafs fans will obviously miss.
Great, but now how do you pay a supporting cast enough to win a cup? The leafs don't win enough puck battles in their own end to win a cup. Toronto fans will be disappointed for another 50 years. You need players who believe in their team-mates and want to win more than get overpaid. The big 4 just said to their team-mates that each of us is worth 3 or4 of you. I think the St Louis team played their hearts out for each other. Don't see that happening with the leafs. I think that that little thing called greed got in the way. I'm a very disappointed Leaf's fan and I hope I'm wrong.
Dubas only promised to sign these top 4 players, he didn't say he wasn't going to cash strap them. Leafs are cash strapped already for next year and the defense have to seriously look at one another and guess which ones will take the pay cuts to stick around and the others will have to decide to leave and take a full time paying job elsewhere. Ooopsies.
You dumbass. Even if they went back to the old format, Boston would be a 4 seed and Toronto a 5. Unless they re-made the divisions into three again, they'd still play Boston in the 1st round.
Thank god this is The Sports Network when every video is just Toronto this Toronto that. Like create a leafs lunch channel to have all the leafs stuff and leave it off here
No matter what the Leafs do fans, haters and sports analyst will criticize them. The Leafs could win the cup and everyone would start whining about if they could win it again in the next season.
Canadian Pride Marner putting him 94 is not worth close to 11m but Matthews 73 points & always getting injured is worth more than 11M? Marner also plays in all situations & plays more like a Centre. You check their all around stats Marner is better all around player period!
@Dghvd hfhhb Check their advanced stats too see that Marner produced at the same level as his 69 point season when Tavares wasn`t with him this season.....MEANING MARNER NEEDS TAVARES AND MATTHEWS NEEDS NOBODY!
Dubus is weak and as really screwed this up. The leafs have to compete with Boston and Tampa how are they going to do this with the sweet heart deals those teams have. Dubus said he doesn’t mind overpaying this guys it doesn’t make any sense to put your back against the wall. Boston and Tampa will always be deeper then the leafs cause they get there’s a hard cap. The young stars on the leafs care about the money 💰 not winning the cup.
"Mitch Marner had 69 points the year before" Yeah let's not mention Tkachuk, Matthews, And a whole bunch of others having less or around the same points but apparently the new norm for them is what they did last year but not for Mitch, he played with Tavares. Rantanen? Who does he play with? Some loser no name called MacKinnon, Who does Point play with? Bunch of no names like Kucherov and Stamkos. I must have missed it but somehow Auston Matthews who isn't a point per game player has somehow won 8 Rocket Richards, back to back 100 point seasons, Nothing is wrong with his contract, Better than McDavid because he scores a few more even strength goals, Matthews could score 30 even strength goals and that is worth more than McDavid's 80 even strength points!!! Stop being hypocrites
Mikko Rantanen's a better player than Mitch Marner. Both have star players around them, but Marner has had a much better team all around him throughout his career. He's pretty good, but he's overrated.
lol always bashing Boston. Hilarious stuff from these guys. Werenski got more money because he's a slightly better player than McAvoy (who has been known to have injury issues). The attitudes of these guys are insane.
I don’t know his name but the guy in the middle has got a real attitude problem and also should let other people talk a little more without cutting them off
why does anything have to be a bargain? why can't dudes be paid what they're worth...you can't compare yourselves to teams who fluked into good deals, you'll just make yourself miserable. it's pointless. that's great for colorado mackinnon makes 5 bucks but eventually that deal's ending and he's getting 12-13. who else, boston's guys? marchand sucked and they got him at term and he got way better. their other dude just took less cuz he's likes hockey, according to him. btw tavares was offered like 13M by san jose and came here for 2 less for whomever forgets that. that's the difference between keeping kasper or not.
I’d say he got the maximum of what he’s worth. If you compare him to similar guys in the league. He’s worth somewhere between 9.5 to 10.5. He got the higher end of what he’s worth. What I find funny is these guys fight for an extra 600 grand on top of ten mill. Like just take the 10 mill and move on already.
Stephan L Hays Exactly. If the Leafs don't win at least one cup in the next 4 years ... Dubas will be considered another John Ferguson Jr. The Leafs must get to at least the conference finals in each of the next 3 years in order to justify the contracts he's given out! Remember ... the teams keep ALL the gate revenue from playoff games. In Toronto, that would mean a ton of money!
The Leafs should have stuck to the Shanaplan and built the team as they were doing. The only addition should have been the Tavares free agency surprise acquisition and an earlier trade for a top 4 defenceman. This mess all started with the totally unnecessary Marleau past his prime free agency acquisition. The Leafs will also miss Kadri a lot more than they think!
No it won't. Just watch how many are signed for WAAAAY less and fit their teams salary structure so there is no need to dump mid level depth for minimum contracts.
What a joke TSN is. Do you really think that Marner adds more to the Leafs than Tkachuk means to the Flames? or Rantanen means to the Avs? Toronto apologist sports network has 0 credibility.
Marner is a 90-100 point guy with a complete game while Tkatchuk is a 70-80 point guy with a complete game but has an edge to him, that doesnt make up for the fact that Marner is a far bigger game breaker.
@@deepbodalia1063 Marner is a bigger game breaker? I disagree. I also disagree that Marner's upside is higher than Tkachuk's. Have you actually seen a game that Tkachuk is in or just watched the highlights? With all due respect I highly doubt you have. If a team were to offer to trade Marner for Tkachuck I GUARANTEE you it would take Marner + a deal sweetener to pry Tkachuck away from another GM. Any GM or knowledgable hockey person would agree.
Phil Viner when they were teammates in juniornit was Marner driving the bus and even in the NHL Marner is anfar bigger game breaker and thats just facts. Tkatchuk isnt as skilled as Marner. I love Tkatchuk, think he’s phenomenal but hes not better than Marner. Marner is one of the best playmakers in the league.
Phil Viner also i watch Calgary every time they’re one HNIC, I probably watch 20-30 games a year and i watched him in junior, I think ik what im talking about. Tkathcuk is good but hes not in the upper echelon of young players like Draisaitl, Matthews, Point, Eichel, Marner, Rantanen etc. Hes closer to guys like Timo Meier, Matt Barzal and Brock Boeser and
@@deepbodalia1063 You may have watched him in junior...may have, but I highly doubt you saw him play 20-30 games last year. Again, would any GM in the NHL trade Marner for Tkachuk straight up? NO WAY. It would be Marner + for Tkachuk...what you call facts the rest of the world calls Toronto myopia. LOL That is reality.
