I can't. Fuck Marner trade him for a competent 5 million dollar winger. And a defenseman and a pick. If he is an 11M+ player that's easily the return. What team willing to sell the farm for Marner? Apparently none cause of the lack of offer sheets. Take less than 10 from the leafs, or go play in Sweden or Switzerland or what have you. This is ridiculous. I hope he holds out and the leafs win without him.
i dont blame marner for not signing and hes not been offered 100mil. if i was marner id sit out training camp and ask for 50 mil over 4 years and a 10 mil signing bonus
Steve - Mitch is an adult. We gotta start holding him accountable for his actions. Maybe he is bowing to pressure from daddy but hell, it’s still his career and his contract.
And truth be told - this reminds me of the Lindros saga with his dad Carl getting waaay too involved...Funny how most parents of current/past NHL'ers don't get involved...
He's demanding more money probably due to higher taxes in Ontario Canada. He would make 1.6 million more or so if he played in a no income tax state in the US.
@@JHockeyFan do you think Tampa is offering him 9.4M x 7 years? No chance. Any other tax free state worth playing in or a team even remotely considering signing him to that amount? Then include the $$ lost through sponsorship money and just being in Toronto...end of the day the whole tax argument makes no sense as these star guys in Toronto make up for it off the ice, and then some while being paid in USD.
Who the hell are we to him him accountable for his business dealings? I've seen some stupid comments lately, and fools suggesting he should be traded, all these dumbed-down Millennials The problem is Dumbass; he has problems dealing with signing players, clearly. And nobody ever mentions that ridiculous contract Nylander got; he was paid about a million a goal last season. Marner probably considers Dumbass to be a fool.
@@daniellee7355 Leafs will tank without Marner. And we don't know what the fuck is really going on. Blame Dumbass; he's done the same with Nylander and messed up the team. And the Leafs need Marner a whole lot more than Marner needs the Leafs.
Dangle...I love you man. But you are being too kind to mitch here. Mitch is a man. He is not some boy. This is his money and his contract and he ultimately decides what he gets. He was the one who had final say. He is being greedy. Marner obsessed fans dont want to admit but he is. He is being envious of the clearly better player in matthews. Everyone including dubas is being way too nice and accommodating to him at this point. Its time to put your foot down.
Thank you. When Nylander went through this last year, everybody blamed him. Now that it's Marner, it's his dad or his agent. Why? Well a Toronto boy would never do this? RIght? LOL, Marner's greedy, he could have signed that 7 x 11 deal and should have
MaddenMobile King_123 But then you’d have to trade Marner because you can’t afford him anymore. The problem with that is you wouldn’t get full value for Marner because you’re in need of a buyer.
They dont have their own 1st pick, so a trade for a top RHD, is the only way to do this. Some teams have to much defense and not enough offense, that's where you look.
I'm done with him honestly, 7-8yrs @11m and he says no, talk about being greedy. For him it's clearly all about money and term, he wants to be walked into UFA so his next contract is huge, so selfish, where is the desire to be a Leaf? where is the desire to play and help the team? Kid could've been a legend in TO, but if he keeps this up he's going to get booed out of this city.
Mystic Phoenix I wouldn’t want to be a leaf in 3-4 years honestly, if Anderson leaves when his contract is up things won’t get any better. I think he’d rather consistently play for a winner, and a short term deal helps him find that winner if down the road the leafs fall off a cliff.
Steve needs a backbone sometimes, needs to be way harsher on Marner's camp but instead gives a really neutral opinion. Leafs offered a huge over payment at 11/7 and he still declined THAT, absolutely insane
You had me until you said his dad was doing what's best for him. His dad has a small man complex. Things his dad has said or implied strongly 1. Mitch was better than Connor in his draft year. 2. Mitch should have never played anywhere but first line. 3. Called Hyman garbage. 4. Their family thinks it's crazy that Mitch is not considered captain. 5. Mitch was overlooked in the ohl. 6. Mitch was screwed out of his bonuses but Auston got them 7. Mitch is as good as Auston. He also tried to start his own marner memorabilia site in Mitch's first year with the life This guy isnt a normal hockey dad. He is a nutcase and he is going to ruin his sons career. He is a bully and orders his son what to do. Honestly I don't think Mitch is like this but he feels pressure from this asshole. Paul marner if you are reading this....stop trying to live through your kid. You are going to ruin him just like Carl Lindros ruined Eric. HOF career but zero cups and injured most of it..
@@SteveDangle This video is it ,on this subject. Trying to avoid speculation til something leaked. Sources on these numbers have been pretty reliable in the past thus my response Steve.
Growing up playing hockey in Toronto, I find it reprehensible that someone would turn down playing for the home town leafs because making over 100 mil Canadian isn’t enough. Send this guy to Switzerland, we’re good enough to win without him.
Keep excusing Marner for everything. You guys act this kid is a 10 year old that doesn’t know what’s going on. At least have more respect for him than that.
Right? he has a voice box. And the dude is 22 years old. I think he's a brat that got very "fun loving" last year aka cocky af. And now he's hiding behind his agent and father to try and downplay the fact that it seems he has a insecurity towards his friend Auston getting paid more than him.
You are being naive. It's all 3. Agent, dad and Marner. 11×8 is $116 million Canadian dollars. For a winger. Not even the best In the league. I would rather trade Marner and Ceci, for a RHD and playmaking winger. Pesce is making, just over, a ridiculous 4 million dollars a year, until 2023-24. That would leave the leafs with 11 million to go after, a playmaking winger. If Marner gets all that money, the leafs are screwed. Unless Mikheyev turns out to be another Panarin and Dadonov, which he just might do, (similar numbers on a worse team then Panarin and Dadonov who both played for the powerhouse, KHL St. Petersburg) hopefully Mikheyev can be at least a close second to Panarin or a close 3rd to Dadonov. Marner turning that contract down in June is absurd, his obsession with Matthew's, top goal scorer, since entering the league per minutes played and other unreal stats, makes Marner look money hungry. Dont care what he does anymore. Hopefully hes traded and leafs cap will look much better and defense much better.
I really like Marner and hope he stays, but on the otherhand trading him for a top end defenseman would be pretty damn good too and balance things out better. Leafs would definitely miss his offense, but I feel we can still score pretty decently without him.
i know you're just spitballing, but theres no way the canes trade pesce for marner. they dont have the space to sign him, plus like you said it's too good of a deal and it's long term.
@@buckeyeisaacable Not spitballing, been saying this from the beginning of the summer, it would solve all the cap problems the leafs have and they will be able to get a great RHD back. I'm dubas, that deal is off the table now. He doesn't have to go to the canes. Lots of teams have called about getting Marner. So, why waste 11+ a year, when you can sign a UFA dman or trade for one and sign a playmaking winger next year and keep your d-core in tact with the extra cap space. What's Marner going to do when Matthew's is named captain, demand that he get it, that they alternate the captaincy every game, this is turning into a shitshow.
If Mitch resigns for an unreasonable amount that screws my team, I’m still going to resent him as soon as he hits the ice in a Leaf Jersey. Nothing will change.
I honestly cannot blame anyone who feels this way towards a player...Granted - it's their right under the CBA to do what they're doing - holding out for more $$$, but these athletes best be careful for their actions have consequences...There's a good chance the Leafs will have a depleted roster next season as they won't have enough cap space to afford some of their UFA Dmen, and there's also a good chance of losing a few current roster players if Dubas does in fact give in to Marner's demands.
@@FMichael1970you called it. These choke artists have fucked up any chance at all to build a team. 4 FORWARDS making 50% of the cap. This isn't basketball where a few stars can drag a team to a championship
@@luc0007 Yeah - the revolving door of 2ndary players continue for Tronna...The list of players past their prime and/or those on 1 yr deals continue to humor me...The results remain the same.
Two things will change this ridiculous RFA business. 1) One of them will sign a 3 year bridge betting on themselves (e.g. Laine) and blown a knee and be out of the league and all the other future RFAs will remember that they are taking a huge risk by refusing longer term. 2) The cap growth rate will slowdown and teams will realize they can't be so undisciplined with their negotiations.
Marner and Matthews and Tavares competing over salary, goals and points destroying team. End the madness and name MORGAN RIELLY CAPTAIN. Checks all the boxes, Canadian kid, Leaf draft pick, longest tenure on team, all-star, leader of the D-Core and earns far less than the others so they will not be jealous of him getting the captaincy. Do it now and end this sibling rivalry among the forwards.
He's a big boy stop hiding behind the agent and daddy.... Either you wanna be a leaf or not... Turn down 100+mill Canadian your a joke! you lost me Mitch
I had 100% faith in Marner up until just recently, but he hasn't lost me quite yet. If I wake up on Oct. 3, and he's still not signed, then Mitch and I are gonna have a huge problem.
TurrdFerg well it’s 8 months past this and he’s injured less then Matthews and is more consistent with points. I like them both but to me he’s worth the money now
116 MIL Canadian, Steve. Trade him. This is cancer for the team. 11 mil is an over payment. And that was shot down. You can't pay him the amount he freaking turned down. We have ONE defense man signed next summer. The cap dictates we can't afford this kids expectations.
You know, the more I go over the timeline of the Mitch Marner contract saga, the more i believe that Darren Ferris should claim a great amount of responsibility for Marner's growing reputation as a player who folds under pressure. He might've earned a healthy commission and got his client a massive deal, but it is becoming apparent that the expectations baked into this massive extension are playing an enormous psychological toll on Marner. If he struggles for a stretch in the regular season next year with fans in the stands, things could get quite ugly. Sometimes, what's best for you and your client isn't always wringing every penny from a team's pockets. That being said, if Marner was emphatically pushing for maximum money and it wasn't just Ferris running the show....well, he dug his own grave for his reputation. A golden grave, but a grave nonetheless.
BTW $11m USD would be $14.5m CAD dollars if anyone was curious. Doing the math this dude could buy 31 brand spanking new 2019 Rolls Royce Wraiths EVERY season. Wish I could turn down that kind of money while playing hockey smh. Meanwhile some people struggle to make rent.. I mean think about something you would love to buy and imagine how many you could buy with $14.5m
Point will be signed soon @ close to 8.5m, Rantanen will follow at slightly lower after. The only team willing to overpay Marner by more than 3m is the leafs.
Nothing like Nylander. Dubas had been in the driver's seat recently at the time and only had a few months to talk to Willy before the start of the season. They have been talking to Marner for over a year! Willy wanted long term because he wanted to be here for a long time. Marner is fighting for a short term. Willy was born in Calgary and spent most of his youth in the States and Sweden. The Leafs are Marner's HOMETOWN TEAM! and he turned down a deal that would make him the 2nd highest paid winger in the league. Completely different context and context is everything.
@@adderalljunkie6144 im just saying that last year around this time people were getting upset with nylander for wanting to get paid and he signed for a reasonable deal. Hometown or not marner wants to get paid and people are getting annoyed with it. His preferred term was matthews 5 year term so he could get paid again when he is in his prime.
Let's say this, he would be able to afford 483 Ford Mustangs every year. Or 29 Rolls Royces. Or he could buy fourteen $1m dollar properties all over the world for just playing one season. He could also buy 72,000 pairs of $200 shoes. Or whatever else floats your boat. It's crazy to think that the dude turned that kind of money down to play hockey.
Maximize money, he does in fact get taxed higher in Ontario, Canada. He should be demanding more to account for the amount more he would take home in the US.
@@JHockeyFan Don't try to tell us how Canadian taxes work or that you understand the nuance of international economics. Bottom line he has more money being paid in USD and living in Canada.
The O Dog said it best. Put the offer of 7x11mill on the table beside a plane ticket to Switzerland and let him choose which one he wants. Can’t let this kid, his dad and his agent bully the leafs
I was honestly expecting a long yelling ranty video. However this may be one of the better videos I've seen on the Marner deal to date. Good job Steve. Good job trying to prevent your emotions from influencing how you see the situation and being an adult to evaluate what it looks like in the big picture. Keep that shit up, bud.
This whole thing has never felt like Mitch was in the driver's seat. Why he isn't, I have no idea. But there's no way he is being this unbelievably petty and unrealistic. That's not the person he has been over the course of his career. I think how jarringly opposite to his personality this has been is why fans are so upset. I genuinely hope that he is signed and this ends without irreparably damaging his relationship with the team, the city, and the fans, because he seems like a genuinely good guy, and is a tremendous hockey player. Signed, A Bruins' fan
There's always multiple sides to a person. Just because he's a nice person or whatever dosen't mean that he's not greedy and wanna wanna cash in as much money as possible.
@@johankiwii Yeah exactly. I just wish Mitch would consider how a few more dollars is going to affect his long-term chemistry with his teammates and fans. It won't just be forgotten after he signs... I hope he truly understands the consequences of his actions. Sucks but it's reality. You can't pull this bs and expect every fan to stand by your side afterwards
Ain't Marner making those demands. It's daddy and Jerry Maguire. BUT it's still bullshit. Get rid of him, stack the blue line and get a good back up for Freddie. I'm available for GM position btw.
I’m surprised I watched this whole video. I’m so sick of hearing about it but this was refreshing somehow. I don’t cheer for the leafs at all either but still I liked this take and enjoyed the vid thanks Steve
I said this a long time ago and nobody believed me. Now you are seeing how right I am. Building a Cup contending team today is different than the past. There is no dynasty. Teams are penalized for drafting and developing well. No team is able to load up on star players because you just won't have enough money to go around when everyone will fight tooth and nail for max money, even if it means blowing up the dream and plan of building a Cup team. Nobody cares about the Cup compared to money. Money comes first. Cup is just icing on the cake. The key to winning a cup in today's NHL is TIMING. You need to have a few stars and sign them to long term contracts and hope they overplay their contracts...look at the Bruins and the Blues...nobody makes over 7.5. Look at MacKinnon in Colorado, arguably the best player in the NHL the last 2 seasons and he's only making 6 million per season over 6 year contract. The Leafs had good value in Kadri and Rielly contracts. That's also why I said when Leafs signed Nylander to 6.9 and everyone was saying overpaid, I was saying they got a great deal, a bargain, a steal. 6.9 looks a lot smaller today than it did 9 months ago, because now we are dealing with 11, 12, 15 million dollar contracts. At this point, IDC anymore who is on our team. As long as we win a Cup is all that matters. So trade Marner and get 4 1st round picks, I'm fine with that. Matthews can go to Arizona in 5 years, whatever. None of it matters. Only thing that matters is timing. Get the right mix of players, old and young, expensive and cheap, seasoned veterans and rookies, and a hot goalie, you can win the cup ANY YEAR.
Love to watch you Steve. So theatrical. I am laughing at all this from a distance. Florida And listening to a Barred owl outside my window. So much drama.
I was in the media room at the Bell pratice facility in Borossard yesterday and it's probable a no no to share anything I herd or saw that is not hockey related but here I go: Pierre Lebrun's ring tone is "Little Bones" and this made me strangely happy....
Also, I don't know about the idea that all is forgiven when he steps back on the ice. The cap implications of this deal will be big and long lasting. And I mean, if we're being honest, as far as the court of public opinion goes, William Nylander is still paying for his holdout last year.
So...Am I the only one here thinking Tavares would be a much better option to become Captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs? At least we know he'll be in Toronto these next 6 seasons...
I heard the handshake deal has been done for awhile now. Dubas knows the whole league-wide RFA situation is handcuffed until Marners numbers come out... so he asked everyone to keep quiet... They will sign and officially announce at last possible minute. “Do anything to kick your enemies, just like you’d do anything to help your friends.”
Look at St Louis and Boston, one of the top lines is only averaging around 6 million each. The 2 highest paid guys for the Blues are at 7.5, with studs like Parayko recently signing for 5.5 mil. Look at Chara taking a discount. There's a reason these teams were in the final.
I watched this one first before watching "Marner Re-Signs" because I skipped it expecting a rant, I'm somewhat surprised this was more sensible than what others in the media have said. They were mostly wrong that the two sides were far apart and the 11 mil x 7 was actually closer than they thought.
Adam was right. This isn’t about the money. Marner is making this personal. Trade him for Jones or Ekblad+. Hell, I’ll take Zaitsev back... (along with Brannstrom and Ott’s 1st).
trade marner, and with the hate he'll have if he sticks to this path good luck living in the GTA. congrats on the fastest hero to villain transition in a long time
Marner has a bad side, he bullied my cousin when he was 14 because they both played on the same team and marner would make him feel like shit basically, there ya go, a bad story about Mitch marner
@Yusuke Urameshi if you check out the Leafs Instagram video from media day yesterday, you can see Matthew's jersey has a C on it. People have screenshots now so just type #austonmatthews on Instagram and a picture should pop up
if mariner dont want to sign 7-8 years for 11 plus a year then we should let him go and spend the cash on defence and a player who would be more then happy to just play for the leafs not a panzy who just wants to put the leafs in a spot
Look, a person who thinks! The greatest thing Kyle can do is trade, him for an AHL prospect and that's it. Treat him like he's treating like Kyle, like a shithead.
The NHL has changed rapidly to a young mans game, it used to be players were done by 35 , now 30 is considered 'old'. I think we're seeing the impact of this now as players aren't prepared to wait until 28-29 for UFA , they want the big bucks now or UFA earlier...
While you're right - it's a shame in a way that these 'kids' aren't in the league for more than a few seasons, and they want their big $$$ contract with very limited experience, and not much of a track record.
