Dan Patrick reacts to Scott Rolan's election to the Baseball Hall of Fame and laments the fact that outside of a handful of players, such as Shohei Ohtani, MLB is currently lacking players with star appeal
“This isn’t old man get off my lawn” then spends 10 minutes saying get off my lawn. If you say Rolen was one of the best defensive 3rd baseman of all time how can you say that guy is not a hall of famer
Exactly. Also only he and Mike Schmidt have at least 8 gold gloves and over 300 HRs at the position. Guys like Dan (who I like) are not true fans or students of the game.
@@chrisweidner4768 Dan is definitely not a baseball guy. Also, Arenado one hr from joining that group. I had/have Rolen as maybe HOF, Arenado? Definitely.
@@willzsportscards Scott also finished in the top 3 in defensive runs saved and average WAR for a 162 game season at 3B. So, I cannot understand the hesitancy.
Rolen is a top 9 or 10 third baseman of all time according to most metrics that’s definitely a HOF for me. Patrick just list the basic ass counting stats man has no idea what he’s talking about
Dude literally talked shit on star power, then how he misses how baseball used too be with bunts and hit and run, and Durant has made a career doing the little thing. That was so contradictory.
Seriously though its obvious Dan and the crew watches maybe 1-5 baseball games a year. Dan literally watched basketball every single day so you cant really take Dan opinion seriously when he doesn’t even try and watch baseball
Hahaha come on man! He is great!! Why can you just be a gentleman to a man being honor? He was great! Awesome third baseman for 10 years, this felt like a hot take. Scott Rolen was great.
That's also true, they both should be in, but what i don't like is to say that a guy like Rolen did not deserve to get it, i mean i'm from Venezuela and we are always looking for details to defend our historic players like Bobby Abreu, Vizquel, Galarraga, K Rod, or David Concepción, we look really hard to argue all of those cases, and believe i have seen so many arguments about why they should not get in, and when we look a someone like Rolen, you can see a man with a solid career, and he is being honored with the greatest honor in baseball, if you think other guys should get in said it, and defend those men, but respect the fact that someone is being honor, give him his flowers, talk about what he did, take this time to celebrate him, that's the approach of a man being kind and humble to the fact that other person acomplished a very hard task of consistently do a really hard job for a long time. You can say also that the voting is not great, that the sports needs more stars, but having the respect to the man who is having the reality of being selected despite the complex voting system.
Dan i love your show, but this was unfair, Andruw Jones was an AMAZING center fielder, 10 Gold gloves and over 400 hrs, it is so hard to get gold gloves, it is so tough to play a great third base, it is so imposible to hit home runs, and batting average, Scott was a consistent dude, he won a ring, he was great. You could say old those takes without putting down a great career. It is about respecting the men.
i work in an office of mostly women. one of my coworkers, who knows i follow baseball, she said,"hey i saw on my newsfeed scott rolan is going to the baseball hall of fame. who is that?" that question sums up baseball's status.
Jeff Kent is the all-time career home run leader for second basemen and was not using the roids, how is it possible he didn't get elected in 10 tries? Also over 1500 RBI's and 2400 hits. They need different people voting because him and Fred McGriff should have been easily elected in.
He's an asshole, like whether the media guys let you in is if they liked you. It's why Papi is in even though he has steroid allegations, the media liked him. How is he in but not Gary Sheffield or Andruw Jones? How did Mariano get 100%, the media liked him.
@@genius179 well that is part of the problem in that it has been a popularity contest. Big Papi was well-liked but cheated and still got in. Kent and Curt Schilling are not as well-liked but should be in.
I don’t disagree with you, like I don’t like Kent or Schilling but I think those guys are HOF, Schilling especially. He’s one of the best postseason pitchers I’ve ever seen.
Another among the MANY reasons why the HOF is illegitimate... Kent has most HRs all-time by a second baseman, but he wasn't considered a great fielder, so he's NOT in.... Ozzie is considered a great fielder, but not a great hitter - and he's IN.... So Ozzie is rewarded for being one dimensional and Kent is PUNISHED??... Huh?
These modern baseball writers overanalyze everything. You should be able to just think of a given player and know that he's a HOFer. If you can't, he probably shouldn't be in there.
Dan is so caught up in the star power argument. I guess thats how he thinks. It's the "hollywood" in him. If the HoF or mvp was legit. There would be a lot more middle relief pitchers, more lineman, kickers, etc.
After Derek Jeter how many players if the average person saw them on the street who would know them. This is the problem even the baseball “A-Listers” feel like B-Listers
Baseball was the #1 sport in the era of the of The Big Red Machine, now it's a weak third behind the NFL and the NBA, that's why there aren't any stars.
Football probably overtook baseball in the 70s. In the last decade or so the media has pumped up the NBA and made it the second-most popular sport, although MLB still brings in more money.
@@zachbush7923 I can't say for sure but I'm guessing baseball began to fade with the acceleration of Free agency, leaving only NY and LA as perennial WS participants, and with the advent of ESPN in the late 70's to early 80's. Why spend 3-4 hours watching an entire game when you can see all the pivitol plays and runs scored in a 3 minute highlight clip?
Rolen, nice player but not HOF caliber. The ONLY reason he got elected is because it would be an embarrassment to NOT have anyone elected to the HOF. This is commerce for Cooperstown and the HOF. Without any ceremonies- no money for the city and its businesses.
As usual Dan proves he is clueless about sports. If you listen to this show it's at least 50% of them talking about themselves. Dan constantly bragging about his Hollywood experiences with "Sandler" or "Aniston." So cool calling them by their last names Dan. This show has become completely unwatchable and has been for a while. At least they got rid of McLovin but that's about the only positive in the past 10 years. This show has become almost as bad as JIm Rome.
Yeah right now if I went to a casual sports fan and asked if they knew any baseball players it's probably just Ohtani and Judge, MAYBE Tatis. Never thought about how baseball players are not celebrities anymore.
If u never talk about baseball its a tough hill to die on dan. I don't care about Scott rolen, but I care about him a million times more than football. ( Which u spend 8 hours a day taking about whether Its during the season or not)
Dan is making a broader point: MLB is no longer a “major” league. I am originally from STL. Lifelong Cardinals fan. Rolen was stout, but to Dan’s point, it was a regional affection. I barely follow MLB. I still follow my Birds and other regional favorites, but sports in general are lame. Star power? What is it? It comes from universal recognition of greatness. We no longer have universal agreement in what is relevant in not only sports but in most other aspects of life: police, military, politics, etc. Everything and everyone is a marginalized.
Yeah, ever since streaming came around, there will be maybe two or three shows that all of America gets excited about (along with the NFL), but everything else on tv only appeals to a niche audience. I don't like what it's become but can't deny the reality.
Adrian Beltre wasn’t star power? Lol Mauer, Kent, Beltran, and Wagner weren’t Stars?? Dan barely talks baseball because he’s just like the rest of sports shows talking about the same topics day in and day out. You want star power back start talking about baseball instead of speculating rumors about the NFL that never happen
That's one of the problems, yep. Hardcore he needs to talk about them. There's at least 2 or more starts on every team in mlb , except mine, we trade them all away #angryA'sfan lol
After just hearing him reduce Verlander, Kershaw, and Sherzer to "ok" lost all credibility....hahaha MOOKIE BETTS ISNT A STAR? ISNT A HOUSE HOLD NAME GTFOH!!
seriously, Baseball has the most random ass stats. “The first Tiger to hit a home run and a double on a Tuesday afternoon in a double header since 1930.”
MLB’s current biggest names are Derek Jeter, David Ortiz and A-Rod. Three player that haven’t played in years. Ohtani has the potential of being at the level of Travis Kelce, Jokic, Messi and even Caitlin Clark. But the guy has zero personality and charisma. His biggest exposure to the world was during his interpreter’s gambling scandal.
Tough crowd in baseball. Don Mattingly, Dale Murphy and Steve Garvey are not in the Hall of Fame and I’ve heard voters say they don’t belong. Plus the banned guys: Shoeless Joe, Pete Rose, Bonds, Clemens and A-Rod, etc. Baseball is just different.
All the people bitching about baseball can stay out of baseball then. If you're upset about the game, which I can't understand why? There are a plethera of stars in the game today. But today's culture spends more time bitching about every little thing instead of enjoying things..ill continue to love and enjoy the game. Way better than the NBA AND SOCCER FOR PETE SAKES.
Not every player is Albert pujols, Hank aaron, or randy johnson. He was a great third baseman. I don't understand the outrage. Like they put randy velarde in or something. And I'm an Astros fan, I spent most of my life hating the Cardinals.
Scott Rolen's career WAR is one win lower than Derek Jeter. Baseball doesn't promote the game in the best ways, but they have been doing better this year. That being said, a guy like Rolen would have been more famous before ESPN made the entire game about Yankees versus Red Sox.
Dan Patrick just doesn’t like baseball man. He doesn’t watch enough. Been watching his show for like a decade now. Adrian Beltre is a certified star and a fun player too watch. He’s downplaying everything they did so hard
I’d conjecture that the long-term decrease of “fame” in the MLB has (everything else aside for a moment) something to do with the rise of sabermetrics, mathematics, and game theory. Moneyball is another branch. But to put it in essence, I would imagine that it’s more difficult to stand out as a player when (e.g.) an A.I. determines who gets to face which batter. This is part of why I’m traditional and accepting the LUDDS when it comes to certain concepts like automated strike zone.
I love the show but is Dan this bitter about MLB network always taking the sports Emmy? Lol that was bad. Baseball is as great as ever. I love the game. It’s the same as it’s always been. Their is a book. The first quote is you either love the game, or don’t get it. You might know how it’s played and what the rules are. But you won’t get it
I miss the game. I miss baseball. The way the game used to be played. -Dan Patrick Analytics ruined the game. In the end Bill James’s legacy will be that he killed baseball. I hope to live to see the day when baseball is resuscitated and I don’t have to see batters swinging out of their ass trying to pull a ball on the outside part of the plate.
Rolen doesn’t have a moment? He hit the home run in game 7 of the 2004 NLCS off of Clemens to send the birds to the World Series. Rolen is a hall of famer in my book. Pujols, Edmonds and Rolen were the Cardinals best players from like 2002-2006
First year of eligibility was 2018 when Rolen received only 10.2 % of votes. Today he receives 76.3%??? That's only 5 years ago. The writers KNEW all of his metrics including WAR in 2018 and still he got only 10.2%..... what changed?
I guess Thurman Munson is chopped liver...again. One of the best WS champion catchers of the 70s. Look at his stats compared to Rolen's. It's NOT Munson's fault that his career was cut short via a life ending plane crash.
Scott Rolen no way a Hall of Famer as far as Jeff Kent people keep saying his name have you played for the Mets and he was horrible play for the Giants later who knows what he was taking like they said Steve Garvey should be in a lot better player they are lowering the standards big time
It's only dead if everyone stops watching. It may not be as popular as it used to be, but once it settles into its niche in the marketplace I think it'll be okay.
Scott Rolen ranks in the top 3 in defensive runs saved and average WAR for the 3rd base position. Also, only he and Schmidt are the only 3rd basemen with over 300 HRs and at least 8 all star selection. Joey Votto speaks reverently of Scott. Larussa and Dusty Baker speak of him as one of the greatest 3rd basemen ever. Ok Dan. You want a Scott Rolen moment? 7 th game of the playoffs hits the game winning home run of Roger Clemons. Charlie Steiner speaks of how Rolen hit 2 HRs in the game after 911. Yes. Scott Rolen was a superstar and one of the greatest 3rd basemen. Ever. And Yes, I’ll agree that star power is missing. Why? Because MLB throws their heroes under the bus. MLB needs to own the steroid era. They enforced use of PEDs to survive. NFL and NCAA football players were making MLB players look like high school players. MLB endorced PEDs to survive as an industry. They need to own it.
Whether Scott Rolen should be in the HOF is a fair point to debate, and I've been a diehard Cardinals fan since 1968. But your point about who's famous in any particular sport is where I take issue. I follow baseball and football closely and would recognize many players. I don't follow the NBA at all and before anyone puts me in a box politically, I don't follow NASCAR either, and wouldn't recognize most of their "stars". It's all a matter of personal preference.
I'm sorry but your the problem with what's wrong with baseball. You need to talk about it more. There's at least 2 stars or more on all the MLB teams except the A's because they trade them away lol Start talking about it again. It's still a great sport and needs the attention. You gotta talk more Dan. Thanks
Also rans like Ray Schalk and Rabbit Maranville are Hall of Famers, but Rolen’s getting trashed as if he’s the problem with the Hall of Fame? C’mon Guys: you’re better than that.
I truly believe that all these super analytics and sabermetrics, have not only negatively affected how people view baseball, but also how they view players/hall of famers
MLB just isn't as popular anymore....that's part of why there's not as much STARPOWER. You can't knock the players just because the league they play in isn't as popular anymore. This is kind of a bad take by Dan imo.
True. Scott Rolen shouldn't be penalized for being boring lol. He had a great career, so he deserves to have it celebrated. I don't see it as a bad thing.
You’re circling around the real issue Dan….MLB sucks at marketing it’s stars. Acuna, Julio, Lindor, Degrom, Arenado…tons of stars in MLB that you’re ignorant to because lack of pushing how good these guys are. Saying Betts isn’t a star is a laughable take
Rolen deserves to be in the HoF. Kent's offensive numbers are a half step above Rolen, but his defense is 2 steps behind Rolen. So yes, Rolen above Kent, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the bar to get in should be set between these two players, there is room for both. Some players that definitely deserve more consideration for HoF induction than they previously received (sticking to largely non-steroid guys in this list but they should be in too): Thurman Munson, Bill Freehan, Lou Whitaker, Bobby Grich, Dick Allen, Kenny Lofton, Rick Reuschel, Kevin Brown, Curt Schilling. Does Dan Patrick think Don Mattingly and Dale Murphy should be in before all of those guys? I say after all those guys (and others).
Dan has a point about star power, but literally the media and Dan are at fault for that. I like the NFL, follow it, but seeing Sportscenter on Tuesday was literally the same 2-3 NFL stories recycled all day. Dan has to talk about Aaron Rodgers potential trade and drama. Drama that can't move forward at all for at least a few weeks. But every day we have to hear about it. Maybe broad sports shows shouldn't only focus on NBA and NFL all the time. Especially in between game. Also I find it weird how NBA doesn't have problems, but their TV ratings for the Finals to nationally televised games aren't great as of late. Yet the sports media acts like it's almost as big as the NFL, and the Christmas Day NFL games blew the NFL by about 20 million per game to the NBA. Last year the NBA averaged about 12 million viewers for the finals, and the world series was about 12 million. I think the NBA is heavily overinflated on Dan's show and the national interest. I live in Chicago, and the Bulls are on the backburner.
Scott Rolen is a hofer with his glove & hitting. U can watch him play and say "that's a hofer" Edit: yes Rolen is better than Donny Baseball and Dale Murphy
So many old players that these voters should now realize they should have voted in at the time, with no one to vote in now. Davey Concepcion . Don Mattingly
@@JQ1115I don't disagree. Rolen was a borderline case, for sure, but so was Mattingly. I'm a Reds' fan and not sure where you're coming from on Concepcion. Excellent defense, for sure, but minus-average, zero power, and never even took that many walks. Above-average on the basepaths for his position, but is that enough??
@@Vic-Vega I’m not sure about that but ok, I’ll give you him. Is Aaron more popular than TB12, Russ, Rodgers, Mahomes, Dak even non-QBs like Watt? I don’t think so
