Reminds me of the old Roger Ebert quote that makes me sad that so few modern writers are actually using diversity to their advantage because as Ebert once said in regards to empathy in film "For me, the movies are like a machine generates empathy. If it's a great movie, it lets you understand a little bit more about what it's like to be a different gender, a different race, a different age, a different economic class, a different nationality, a different profession, different hopes, aspirations, dreams and fears. It helps us to identify with people who are sharing a journey with us. And that, to me,, is the most noble thing that a good movie can do and it's a reason to encourage them and to support them and to go to them." Yet the sense of entitlement that a lot of modern diverse products to the point of bordering on propaganda makes it clear that modern creators did not follow the Ebert example.....

Eh, in all honesty, the late Roger Ebert, just like his fellow movie critic, the late Gene Siskel, was more often than not very disingenuous in his criticism of film. So I wouldn't regard anything that he had said as some kind of profound statement. Ebert was no legend in his lifetime, but in his own quite condescending and pretentious way, truly thought that he was.
@callummoore6962
@callummoore6962 Год назад
@@incubustimelord5947 Oh I know Ebert was far from perfect and at times was not a man of his word as he let some of his old timer ideals get in the way, but he was capable of making a legit point and the quote I shared is one of those.

@@callummoore6962 I think what was being taken issue with is him saying something like that, but then also being a total hypocrite, or even ignorant, when a movies steps outside his realm of understanding and/or liking. Unless I'm remembering it completely wrong, I recall him being notoriously negative toward action movies, especially Scifi ones. At the same time he was also heavily skewed toward, what was considered at the time, more pretentious films. Siskel on the other hand, I remember being more about "what the movie was up to" and would at least frame what he thinks based on what the movie was trying to do. So an action movie being an action movie would still make sense, because thats what it wants to be. Siskel's is a less firm stance, so people would usually react harder to Ebert's opinion. This, along with other critics, lead to the creation of "The Critic" animated series. If you need an example of a show that was ahead of its time, this one of them. Its kind of amazing how its essentially absurdist humor, but somehow is less crazy and extreme then current reality.
@callummoore6962
@callummoore6962 Год назад
@@freelancerthe2561 Yeah Siskel was the better of the two. As Ebert being harsh towards certain genres, I thought it was horror films he was particularly harsh towards and not action films.

Remember when you read the authority and you found out apollo and midnighter were gay? Or when in exiles it was revealed a character was gay in the very beginning of the issues? Or the reveal of transexual character in trees by Warren Ellis? You found out by reading these well written, exemplary stories. You met these characters in original stories and grew to know them and you found out their personality and preferences. It wasn't a selling point! The fact DC and Marvel have to scream more about the sexuality of someone in a story rather than the story itself is a really good way of telling you if should spend money on a upcoming release or not.
@tacticianAlexandra

I recall Spider-man aka Peter parker. People were interested in his love life, after they got to know the character. Which lead to them wanting to learn and know more about them in general. For a flesh out character, who has a personality will simply get people interested in them over time. For Iceman or rather what they did to him. Shows yeah, what happens when you make a character have only a single trait and everything about their life is related to that single trait somehow, along with making him very unlikable. For that another thing they like to do, make many of these characters simply disrespect others around them. having them come off as jerks. So they are not just a one note character but a massive jerk to everyone. It not even in the fun villain kind of way like Dio from Jojo. No it like working retail and having someone come into the store who is the most demanding annoying disrespect person.

Personally, I'm insulted by it all. Tired of it. Whenever I see something to the effect of "appeal to modern audiences" or "reflect today", I'm out. They think just turning a hero black means they represent me. It doesn't. I'm not JUST a black man. I have good days and bad days. I have interests and ideas that vary, wildly. And a character like Batman or Cyclops may not look like me, but I enjoy seeing their drive, their personality, their skill, how they overcome and inspire others. And when they write things like Batwoman, which was supposed to support the lgbtq community, I saw even people who were lgbtq mocking the ridiculous overemphasized lesbianism and antagonistic views on everyone else. Even further in the gutter, some assume that, as a straight man, I'm all in on lesbianism. I'm not. It makes you wonder. Do these writers, directors, showrunners, etc truly believe that audiences want this stuff, are they tone deaf, or do they not care? Do they want the smoke, because it drives up chatter? Because, whether it's comics, tv, movies, or games, I see less interest, in all the swapping, every day. Bad viewership, lower box office, all that. Somebody greenlit Bros. That should indicate how insane it's gotten. And yes, if it's diversity you want, you want to give my kids heroes they can look up, even though they like several varying heroes, why not bolster and get some talent behind the different faces at DC or Marvel? Static is getting an event on DC Universe Online. That's great. No movie? Steel was in the Return of Superman cartoon, a while back. He was great. They make several X-Men movies where Storm is just there. Bishop never shows up. They've downplayed how cool John Stewart can be, in favor of pushing Jo Mullens or whoever. They either want to toss leftovers and hand-me-downs, turn em black, turn em some other sexuality, rather than build a character that earned their spot and isn't just a descriptor, and it's sickening.

What you have in western media now is Homogenized Diversity; meaning that the diverse ethnic representation is so typical and predictable that its inauthenticity is jarring in most instances. I grew up in the 80s and most TV shows and movies were ethnically diverse WHEN WARRANTED by the subject matter. If you're telling a story set in 1980s-1990s Los Angeles as in Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Heat, .etc, the movie is going to be ethnically diverse. If you're telling a story set in 10th century Scandinavia, it should be primarily Caucasian cast. If you're telling a story in 10th century China, it should be an all-Asian cast. Now? Every story regardless of setting, cultural context or historical time, is pressured to be ethnically diverse and it reeks of modern western politics and an almost OCD-level obsession with "equality" and "representation". It's nauseatingly inauthentic. Coming to America is a mostly black cast and an amazing movie. Kung Fu Hustle is a mostly Chinese cast and an amazing movie. The Fellowship of the Ring is a mostly Caucasian cast and an amazing movie. Do what's right for the story and not what race-obsessed lefty activists want.

Thats because they are obsessed with a racial utopia... Specially the US. Thats why the "Modern" setting is convoluted. Take England for example... No matter the time, is a white country Anthropologically talking, that will lead to a "Rule"... No matter the immigrantion. Its not about time, is about truth... The "All white cast" in an US thing will make always a debate because the US is an artificial country... Its not white naturally like Norway or Germany, and that will lead always to race fights... Or representation fights. And Hollywood tried to force THE ENTIRE WORLD do be them... Thats why not only Hollywood as an institution but the "US hegemony" is falling apart.

The most annoying had to be when they started going around, claiming x is the first for y or z. only to be proven wrong again and again, showing they have no knowledge of media history in the slightest or are simply ignoring it. Along with why does it matter if they are the first? For being the first to do something, might not be a good thing or in the case of media, well it might be a bad story rather than a good one. That and diversity tends to happen on it own over time, without it needing to be force. At least in the classic sense of variety, like a writer doing something new to shake things up a bit. Like oh going to a new land with a brand new culture and rituals. To explore and learn about. That or a new character with a different point of view.

This identity obsession is not a selling point. People just want to have fun. Look at anime, it is 99% about asian people and nobody has a problem to enjoy them. The diversity thing is exaggerated and outside USA/CANADA/UK most countries are not that mixed, their movies/shows don't represent how the entire world is; Greece, China, Spain or Italy are not like USA at all. But what turns me off is that certain identities are portrayed in a positive way and other like losers or evil people and the moment I see a "diversified cast" in a movie I just won't watch it because I know how they are going to disrespect "a certain group of people" and I'm not into entertainment for that.

Which when you do get other stuff, like Hawk wood a manga about a sellsword, Berserk, Drifters, historical stuff in general. You see them do their research. Making things if they are trying to follow history, look like how they are meant to look. Like a manga about Hannibal fighting against rome, you get to see roman soldiers looking how they should, using proper weaponry. Even stuff like Hellsing , a world filled with vampires and other supernatural creatures, will use put to good use real world history. To such a great degree, while giving their own fantasy spin and take on. Something that could only be done by a person who properly did their research and didn't just throw something together randomly on the page. Making it seem almost like a what if of history. For they didn't need to go the extra mile but they did and the details are just lovely for those who notice them.

When they hired Samuel L Jackson to be Nick fury, I was not upset. I’m assuming most people know how he got the job in the first place. They introduced a black Nick fury in a now defunct, ultimate marvel universe. Jackson saw the comic books and petitioned for the role. Nick fury was one of their D list characters. It didn’t really matter. I consider myself to be a progressive/Democrat/leftist. However, I do agree with you that this is gotten completely out of control for whatever reason a lot of redheads have been replaced by Black people and film versions, and TV versions of comic book characters. I don’t know why at one point I heard that they were trying to develop a red Sonja movie and they want to hire a biracial black woman. That’s not who red Sonja is. Aquaman work despite the fact that the actor was half Polynesian, I just found it ironic that Patrick Wilson looked exactly like the Aquaman from the comics I don’t think diversity is the problem. Actually, I think the problem is a lack of continuity between films, TV shows, and the previous story we were told up until endgame. Marvel/Disney is rushing through the screen writing process and destroying the stories as well as misrepresenting the characters.

What's being talked about here is the UNCANNEY affect. That which is Obviously Out of Place or Disproportionate or "Unnatural" like background extras as described here, that which Doesn't Ring True stands out. And in the real of Fiction and Films and Shows, theres Still even a Limit to the Illusion and when the line is passed then Suspension of DISBELIEF is DISPELLED. There's far more accurate descriptions in the Dictionary as well as Studies for it. Uncanny Valley I think is the full term. Part of the adaptation for comics comes with Passing the Squint Test for character adaptation. Passing this Test is ONE Element to a Successful Adaptation. The Live version MUST Look Like the Original Source Material version. As in the Key Design Elements to whatever Focus and Proportions Must be Present. I'll give Two Examples, one that Failed Outright and another that HALF Succeeded with Two of its Forms. The Outright Failed Adaptation was X-Men Days of Future Past SENTINELS. They Physically Moved as I would expect them to do but they Had No Voice like the Source And Animated versions, an Integral Part of their Identity that makes them Extremely Intimidating. Deep, Boomingly Loud and Resonate but EMOTIONLESS. Their only sounds of Alarm are when they're taking critical damage. They Have to Act like Sentinels, okay they did get that right. However their Look, they looked Nothing like their original and Recognizably Profitable form. They looked like Rejects from I,Robot. Fail. Unmarketable, their Secondary Form also Riffed off or Ripped off that Ultimate Sentinel, the Pink One whose name escapes me as I write this And listen at the same time. But regardless from the first Sentinels through Master Mold and others, That's a Story Arc All on it's own Worthy of a Trilogy. An Intense one at that. Squandered, Potential not even Scratched. Okay the Other example is the Hugh Jackman Wolverine. Everyone including me loves him, even though Logan is originally Short at 5'5" or 5'6" vs Hugh's 6 ft whatever. He Embodied the role plain and simple. Because he Embodied the role his Height became a Non Issue. His Costuming however only matched his regular jeans and button up plaid shirts, cowboy hat sometimes and boots...and a six pack of Canadian beer...and a Stogie . But they Never Once managed to Nail Any Variant of his Source material Costumes. Not Once. They Teased us with a Deleted Scene for the End Scene with his Signature Cowl and Gloves in a Variant of the Dark Brown and Yellow. I would have preferred the Tan to the yellow. Never liked the yellow. I understood Why, ok fine, but it Doesn't Suit the Character, who Is a Feral Fighter...but he's Ninja Animal Stealthy Before that point Like an Actual Wolverine is. His Suit for That part of his tactics Has to Blend with Shadows and Darker Colors. The Dark Brown Burnt Umber and Tan Blend far Far better than the Bright Yellow. I felt the Team Costume Uniforms variants since that first Yellow and Blue combo back in the 90's was taken or stretched out a Tad too far, making a...homogeneous take that bled across character Traits even. Kinda an Early Doorway of Goal Post moving that Allwed for the BS recently with Prom..... Anyways. That Teaser was Never brought to Reality and I Have to Wonder whether Deadpool 3 will Remember that Failing and Finally make the Entire Wolverine Costume with Hugh in it. That would be a Major Win in my Book AND a Defense from One Angle at Least...the Look...The Passed Squint Test Protects against the Uncanny Valley and Suspension of DISBELIEF. It's up to Accurate Characterization and a Banging Story from there to do the rest.

Eternals frustrates me... I love Jack Kirby vision, and... Honestly i liked changes like an Indian Kingo or a female Sprite...i like changes if they stablish a real identity to the character (and if they are coherent with the context, we are talking about Aliens who are in different parts of the world). But it was too... Boring as movie. That needed to be a series... And with someone Who likes cosmic mythos, not someone like Chloe Zhao (A good director btw) When we are talking about an UNIVERSE, diversity is needed... But you need to be coherent, be honest... And write Quality. But if you are litterally a Identity communist, you will never write coherent things... Because you don't believe in truth, you believe un delusion. Thats why even things that ppl believe "Are Well writted characters" fall when they release that "Diverse" checkbox is that... A checkbox. The Entertaiment industry lacks of honesty completely... And that will Hurt always the projects...but they need to learn the Hard way...and if no, die in the way.

The best example of race not mattering in a great film is Much Ado About Nothing when Denzel Washington played one of the princes of Italy. He wasn't portraying a black man...he was portraying a man...period. He was the one black man in an all-white cast and NOBODY cared! Now, imagine that you're writing a comic and a new character is introduced. His costume covers him completely and his voice isn't ethnic enough (voice modulated?) to reveal anything. Ten issues in, he reveals that he's black and nobody says anything about it. I'd love to see this!

To anyone who read the All New All Different Era, it should come as no surprise that the films are failing to resonate with longtime fans and that quality has dipped. No one likes replacement heroes or legacy marvel heroes. I'm a lifelong Marvel fan and there has yet to be a truly great legacy or replacement hero in the company. Legacy characters, even the multiverse, is a DC thing and it something they have always done better than Marvel. That being said, great video as always and thank you.

Not sure why diversity is always praise as a good thing. Since if we take the meaning, a variety of things. Well it like mini games. 10 mini games are great, if they are well designed. 10 mini games is bad, if they are poorly designed, making a single well done mini game be better than 10 bad ones. Which is the same for characters. Which the idea of representation, which is what they really mean when media often uses diversity these days. Doesn't make much sense when you look into how often they handle it. Of trying to make a single character represent everyone. Which is in no way possible, with how many different ideas and beliefs exist out there. That and if representation is important, why does hollywood have to be the one to do it? Since Japan makes it own media and they can represent themselves. Seeming more like they don't really care about their own idea of representation but rather using it for other means. For If they truly care about representation, why not help nations build up their own media industry? So everyone can represent themselves, rather than having a third party do it for them.

People who dislike super-hero characters in the comic book industry ruined the comic book industry. If they don't like super-heroes, then they should just stay in their lane and get out of American comics and graphic novels. The same rule should apply to comic book-based super-hero character movies and T.V. series, whether they are either animated or live action, video games, computer games, and Role-Playing Games, Japanese manga and anime, etc.

I think a big issue is the quality of the writers. Look at the movies the Russos did. They were diverse films and very entertaining. Very strong female characters (except for Captain Marvel's forced cameo). The majority of Phase 4 was filled with lazy writers who simply wrote to pander to a particular crowd. They didn't add anything to character or story. Both Dr. Strange, and Thor seemed like cameos in their own films. Their characters were damaged in both films. Both were somewhat incompetent as well. It didn't help hiring writers who hated comics and the original material like the She-Hulk writers. They have effectively destroyed that IP. The lead actress said she wasn't going to play the character in anything else (no one wants to see that iteration in any future Marvel movies or shows). As much as she "praised the show" she's actively searching for other projects.

I actually hate the idea that we are all the same all the human race. It sounds nice but it isn't based on reality. It is the same philosophy that leads to race and gender swapping. Since everyone is the same then it is okay to do the swap attitude. In reality though, men and women are different. The various races and ethnicities are different. That is a good thing because each bring something new to the picture. The big problem is that by ignoring the differences the "diversity" is purely skin deep. There could be much more interesting stories told if real diversity was shown. Also, diversity shouldn't be the focus if it makes sense to have diversity characters then fine but if not then don't do it. The Harfoots is a great example of how to do diversity wrong.

Speaking as a Brit, it was nice that Eternals did get it's tube directions right. Unlike Dark World, of course. Spider-Man far from home almost got the Tower of London entirely right . I'd imagine they weren;t allowed to show images of where the Crown Jewels are, presumably for security. Visitors go past them in real life on a conveyor belt, so no chance to stand still. But where did the Museum of Britain in Black Panther come from? Did the British Museum not want to play ball? In Eternals, I didn't care that character was gay. One way I look at it is if a character isn't human, they might have different attitudes to such things. But there was no chemistry between the actor and the one playing his husband with that kiss, so it felt like box ticking. The only one that did bug me was Wakanda Forever. That last scene with Ross was just putting words into characters mouths. And it wasted far too much time on Namor's origins. Which didn't mention that the Aztecs did take over one other culture and assimilate it. I could have happily suspended my disbelief on water breathers. It worked fine with Aquaman. 2:00 It’s funny to hear you mentioning experiencing LGBTQ Fatigue in the MCU because I was thoroughly enjoying the MCU from 2008 to 2014 but after Avengers: Age of Ultron I experienced American 🇺🇸 Caucasian Man Saving The Day Fatigue in the MCU. Every Solo MCU Movie had a white man as the lead and after nearly eight years of this it got really stale and I was over it! I silently subconsciously departed the MCU with the release of Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man and Doctor Strange. Those were the first three MCU movies that I selected to not watch and I wasn’t planning on watching anymore MCU Films after that but it was as though Lord Kevin Feige heard my ardent prayers and he included the Black Panther & Spider-Man to the MCU in Captain America: Civil War. And after how depressingly bad Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice was to me. I had to go see Cap’s new movie to wash the stink of BVS off of me and CACW got me so fresh and so clean clean! And then we got Black Panther in 2018 and it succeeded at everything I knew a superhero movie could succeed at. Which is have pretty serious real world themes as the crux of its narrative. Because let’s be real here. As fun as it was to see all of the Avengers interact with each other in 2012. That was an offend nobody generic alien 👽 invasion movie. Avengers 2015 also had good chemistry with its cast of Avengers but it was just another non problematic generic story about defeating a A.I. Apocalypse. Now Iron Man 2008 was about some real ish. So was Captain America: Winter Soldier. But Black Panther was the ultimate gamble. A 200 Million Dollar Budget Film with a predominantly black cast , director and a potentially very controversial story about how the oppressed can become the oppressor. Based in real world situations. Thor 2011 perhaps deserves an honorable mention for actually having some pretty serious subject matter within its narrative. Because it’s themes were self-improvement, self hatred and attempted genocide. But the Frost Giants are aliens and fantasy beings. Killmonger on the other hand was gonna delete and oppress a whole bunch of white people. Who are real people, so that just hits different, ya feel me? You see my boredom with the MCU wasn’t just based on the very similar phenotype of its lead actors. It was also because of how culturally similar so many of their characters were as well! Even though Thor Odinson was from Asgard we never got to spend much quality time there. And this is another reason why Wakanda was such a breath of fresh air. The people looked different. They dressed different. They lived differently. And it was all a wonder and joy to be a part of. For me, Black Panther 2018 was a feast for my eyes. A treat to my ears. And a blessing to my heart. It restored my interest in the MCU and faith in the potential and value of Superhero Cinema!

One of the worst rcent offenders was She-Hulk. They took a rather lesser known motley group of villains called the Wrecking Crew, and instead of fleshing them out in their debut into the MCU, they all got a 20 second scene where they tried to ambush Jen and she whoops them in said time and only two of them got speaking lines; and one of them showed upe later in a later episode (Wreckert) doing a 180 on hiis villain nature (which was just stupid). But the thing with them is, they raceswapped the three characters who were White in the comics to two Latinos and an Asian. Which brought nothing to the table in terms of why would they raceswap them. Especially since they were only there for 20 seconds and two of them had no lines. But the biggeest most hypocritical offense is they took the smartest character of the group, Elliot Frankline, aka Thunderball, who in the comics was actually one of Marvel's first original Black characters, and one of the smartest, nicknamed at one point "the Black Bruce Banner" because Banner, he too was an expert on Gamma radiation, and was a phycist. The joke of the Crerw was the three of the members were usually dumbassess and he'd have to keep them in line. But in She-Hulk? He got reduced to an idiot with a ski mask with one line. and he was raceswapped to a White guy. Not even a primary actor either; they just used a stunt double and gave him one speaking line. So it showed Disney really isnt geniune with they talk about diviersity and inclusion in their inititive. Its really just fluff talk nonsense and theyre using minorites as pawns and props as mentioned in this video. All to make their company "look" morally upstanding,. so the people in charge can pat themselves on the back. Mind you, it also is probably tied to the recent Oscar diversity quoate mandates. Disney is desperate to have their movies get Oscar nominations. Angela Bassett got one for Wakanda Forever, Kevin Feige had been pushing Eternals hard before it aired since it had an "Oscar nominated" director Chloe Zhao, and thats why they hired Brie Larson as Captain Marvel back in the day so they could try to outside DC when Wonder Woman came out with Gal Gadot and did well; here they can say "well we have an Oscan winning actress in OUR female superhero movie" etc. But the end result was those movies were mid. And so yeah, most fans just want accuracy to comic book source material. Thats kinda the whole point in wanting to see these adaptations. No one wants some unknown writer or director / producer coming in there trying to reinvent the wheel for their own self-iinsert agendas (thats how we got that god awful Velma cartoon recently), we just want accuracy. And the other thing with the raceswaps' wheres the original minority characters? Theres actually a lot of them in the comics; just bring them over then. Stop doing the unnecssarary race and genderswaps when you actually have decades of material you can use. Its so lame. So now we're going to get Black Wonderman and a possible Indian Reed Richards? Why was Namor an Aztec Mexican now? Why not just create an original character if you wanted that representation? Wheres Blue Marvel? Why wasnt T'Challa recast? Who the hell asked for Riri Williams? etc

I'm so sick of all this racial shit. I'm a black guy & I could give a shit about race, and I'm a huge comic fan. My beef w/ the race bending characters is that it gets away from the authenticity of the characters themselves. For example, I'm a huge Avengers & X-Men fan, & one of my favorite characters, [Namor], finally hits the screen, & they thru out 80 years of his history, & made him Mesoamerican. Atlantis in the history of Marvel is located in the Atlantic ocean, of the coast of Africa, nowhere near the Aztec/Mayan ruins. Namor's father was an Irish sea Captain, & his mother [Princess Fen was an Atlantean woman], yet for the movie they moved Atlantis and now called it Talocan? No disrespect to anyone, but the guy who played Namor, looks NOTHING Like Namor. The perfect guy for that role, perfect to a T, should've been Luke Evans. Them casting this guy for the role, is like casting me to play Thor or Hercules. I'm not Caucasian, I'm not 6' 5 250lbs. I'm 5' 7" 150lbs, lean, athletic build, but not jacked. My thing is if You're gonna make a comic movie, keep it authentic, which is why I hated the Fox movies cause everything was wrong. Hugh Jackman, though I loved him as Wolverine, he's 6' 2, while Logan is 5' 3. The Fox movies had People thinking that his claws come out from in between his fingers, when they some it from the back of each hand, and They had Mystique on screen naked walking around w/scales, now lies. That's why I loved the MCU because they had things more correct, that is until recently
