I had expectations lower than consumer faith in Bud Light and Target, and I found it fairly enjoyable. It's got problems, they all do, but it's worth a watch.
given that the reboot pretty much ditched everything that made the OG lara popular, "updated it for modern audience" already, and the last movie to be made already followed it... too late already...
Come on, she'll be a great Lara Croft (when she casts herself.) It is modern times and modern audiences. We don't need an attractive, shapely Lara Croft attracting that toxic male gaze. The characters popularity be built 90% on the male gaze, but we are past that now. (/S joke joke joke.)
@@dayneinsayne Go back and watch the first one. It's aged insanely well, and it actually shows how we've regressed in film making. That movie has very little CGI and some incredible stunt work that a lot of people forget about. The scenes where she's attached to the ceiling running along the walls or riding the Harley through the mansion while shooting everyone look better than most action scenes today. It was also one of the last releases before 9/11, so the movie has a level of fun that movies started to lose after the attacks. Also, Angelina Jolie was willing and did end up padding her chest for the role. Imagine that flying today lol.
There was a time when seeing a film/ franchise under perform or fail at the box office made me sympathize with the studio, as the odds were, they tried to put out the best product they felt they were capable of, but fell short of reaching its potential. However, Disney is content on purposely erasing legacies, belittling characters and destroying legacies to the point where I can't help but smile as the failures pile up. As I predicted recently, something has got to give at some point as they have to come up with 9 billion in short order and racking up the Ls at the box office isn't helping matters. Maybe those rumors of a Lucas Arts buyer might come true and Disney, having no choice, will sell the IP. A guy can dream right?
Disney doesn't have to get $9B. They were paid that amount for commitment from advertisers to be on Disney+ for when they rework the tiers of subscriptions to include an Ad tier and an Ad-free tier.
I would like to see cinemas treat Disney the same way retailers treat Bud Light. Retailers have started decreasing Bud Light's shelf space because sales are so weak. So why can't cinemas restrict new Disney movies to one theater instead of 8, unless and until Disney proves to them that the movie isn't woke at all? If I owned a cinema, I would certainly do this. If all cinemas did this, Disney movies would face an initial cap on the amount of profit they could potentially make. Pour $300M into a movie and the highest ~potential~ box office returns for the opening weekend is capped at maybe $20M. This is failure for the movie before any reviews are in and it would send the clear message to Disney that your films mathematically can't be profitable. Remember cinemas are also losing money because of these horrible movies. If they're not being paid off by Blackwater or whoever, then where's their incentive to support this ubiquitous toxic cringewoke madness? All it takes is one cinema company to start capping woke releases. When their profits improve, other cinemas might fall in line. Anything Disney, especially anything controlled by Kathleen Kennedy, anything where the actors start bashing the fans for existing, anything that "looks woke" on the surface, anything where the director/producer/company decides they want to make major changes to a beloved franchise for no apparent reason, and any film (like James Bond) where they already wokeified the franchise in the previous movie. For these, the companies should PROVE to the cinema owners that they aren't rabidly woke and repellent to regular audiences. This would include a private screening of the movie two weeks beforehand. If I own the cinema, I need to know for a fact that it's not what all the detractors are saying before I give such a movie any more of my valuable theater space. Something like IJDoD would get one small theater in my cinema, if that. Just one cinema can start this much-needed trend. Make Hollywood bleed money. Make these movies money losers before they're even completed. Maybe then we'll get real movies back.
I have to agree with you that having Indy riding off into the sunset works as an ending but --- going forward if you want to keep the story going. They should have come up with a more suitable replacement to carry the torch into the future and yes, it should be a man complimented by a strong female supporting character. The Force is NOT female and neither is Indiana Jones. The whole lesbian vibe suite of KK bestest ever characters have been rejected by the moving going public. At least in the form they have presented them. Even the blue lesbian star cruiser has crashed to the ground. If done well a lesbian or feminist character can do well but demographics and archetypes are not superficial and interchangeable. Not only are men half of the population they likely pay for more than 90% of the movie tickets so intentionally excluding or berating them is a recipe for failure. Men like to see beautiful women and they like to see movies where the male characters interact with them in interesting ways. Movies are virtual experiences. Men don't want to pay big money to experience an ugly snarky woman berate and replace them at every turn.
Why didn't they make an entire movie with a young Indiana Jones? Or have two stories (young, old) running parallel with the mcguffin "dial of destiny" changing things in the past/future, so we jump between young/old Jones throughout the movie, that would have been awesome!
@@NUKESDONTEXIST This director proved with Logan he absolutely could nail a younger version of the character (granted he never talked), and that would have been fine! Why did young indie ever have to talk? He could have done all the action scenes!
I think if there were to be a "future of the franchise" there's two possibilities: 1) The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. It did really well on TV in the '80s/'90s. I could see rebooting it and telling some early adventures and lost stories. And people would not be upset at the lack of Harrison Ford because it would be set so far back in Indy's history that there's no reason to be upset., or 2) Also sort of a spin off of Indiana Jones, but set the adventures in the 1970s or 1980s. There were a fair number of archeological things going on in those decades: Found temples and cities in South America using vegetation maps I think (that might be early 2000s), discovered the Titanic. Discovered the City of Troy. So not that you couldn't make up your own discoveries as well, but there was actually a lot going on that you could look into for inspiration. So having a young kid or club of kids inspired by Indiana Jones could be interesting. Heck you could even go for adult adventurers who are struggling with grants and get a really cool lead in an old steamer trunk It would effectively be Indiana Jones the next generation, but we can come up with a better title than that.
but Disney/Lucas Film can not put out something with a strong male role. they just aren't allowed so Young Indy would end up like Obi Wan where its not even about the character the show is named after it.
It's dead. The female lead was the final nail in the coffin. I think it died in 89 with the last crusade. Now Disney has it where franchises go to die. Go woke go broke. Don't forget your Bud Light. Lol
YIJ was possibly the finest thing Lucas ever made. But for god's sake NO MORE!!!! Let these old franchises die already! The 80's are long over. Time for something new.
I liked John Carter, even though it departed substantially from the original novels. I think the poor choice of names and lack of advertising are largely responsible for its failure.
I watched John Carter for the first time about a year ago and I actually thought it was pretty good. Its just that when jumped around it was a bit cringe but if you just let yourself accept that he jumps around like a tick, other than that the movie is pretty cool..
It's interesting to look at the effects in the old Buster Crabbe Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers serials and consider that it won't be long before the current Disney CGI looks just as bad. The old serials certainly have better writing than Disney's current films.
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is a computer game, but it's SOOOOO good. It really gives you an adventure that feels similar to the first three films. I so wish that was made into a movie. It's too bad.
I wonder if these companies are tired of having the football ripped away from them in the same vein as Charlie Brown yet. On an unrelated note to John Carter, I would love a Dejah Thoris movie but wearing the same costume seen on Dynamite Entertainment covers. But we all know that won’t happen.
I'm really hoping that the movie going audience has finally lost its taste for a diet of stale, wound up leftovers. Although that may be doing a disservice to leftovers, which at least have son of the flavour of the original. Today's string of reboots, reimaginings, remakes and soft reboots have all the flavour of eating cardboard.
the dumbest part of this movie is that they made it seem like archeology is dead because of the space age. Everyone remembers in history class that in the 60s all the museum closed because no one brought any new artifacts.
John Wick is a good example of how to make money and give fans what they want. Instead of going for a billion dollar box office, they make a movie within a budget, that the fans turn out to see. And John Wick is one of the last franchises that sells DVD/Blu-Rays. It will sell almost another $100 million in physical media, not to mention the on demand rentals. I like John Wick movies. It is the only movie I have paid to see this year. They aren't for everyone but nothing is. Hollywood needs to make more lower budget, niche market films of a decent quality; instead of always going for a blockbuster. It is why superhero movies are crap now. They keep trying to make universal movies to hit a magical billion dollar mark. Ant-man was one of my favorite franchises because it wasn't supposed to be a blockbuster. Then disney tried to make it one and we all saw how that turned out.
Actually #4 is the most expensive movie in the francise with almost $100 million budget and given current market condition it will most likley flop at theaters.
When you consider that Disney paid $4 billion for the Indiana Jones franchise (a rather dubious investment to begin with for an aging franchise with little merchandising leverage) - this debacle will easily be the biggest loss in studio history.
What Star Wars fans have for Star Wars I have for Indiana Jones. That was my trilogy growing up. When Crystal Skull came out I went to see it day one. Never seen it again, my future wife also a huge Indy fans since child never seen that movie. She been holding that over my head saying she's a bigger fan for never seeing the 4th movie people claim is real. There for I can never watch Dial Destiny, she would mock me for the rest of my life (more then she already does)!
It would seem to me that releasing all the old Indiana Jones movies ahead of the new one is the exact sort of cash grab that Disney would love, and if they did it in Asia that might have gotten the people more invested in the franchise.
I don't see how we win. Growing up; it was great to go see any Disney movie. Now it's getting so there's no way you can watch a good flick unless we're all either willing to have liberal bullshit shoved down our throats or it's made in another country.
@@BAM5636 how do you know they will exist beyond him ? can you tell the future ? disney might be big yes but don't think a big company can't go down and sell alot of its assets the rate disney is falling apart so far is telling they either fix themselves or they will keep falling and be bankrupt the thing is disney is failing in almost every aspect not just movies and shows
LOL Disney is much bigger outside the USA, they are not going anywhere and why would you want an american tradition and powerhouse to fail? You make no sense. I want Disney to do better.
Indiana Jones, Raiders of the Lost Ark 1981 and 1989 The last crusade for me will always stand out as the best Indie movies. Seriously, Ford should have quit after Crusade. What a sad end to such an amazing character. Thanks a lot KK 🤢😢
I think more and more people are hesitant to watch a Disney movie without someone they trust recommending it. The risk is high it is awful so why risk time and money to go see it on opening weekend?
From Idaho to Washington DC, almost EVERY SINGLE TICKET remains available for prime showings of this movie, including “IMAX.” Am I missing something? How is that possible??
Indiana Jones was my all-time favorite movie franchise but I cannot support this garbage film. I'm furious that they squandered the opportunity to give this franchise the incredible send-off it deserves. They should have made "The Spear of Destiny" and Speilberg should have written and directed it.
For the life of me, I can't understand why Disney is making a new Indiana Jones movie with an 80-year old Harrison Ford rather than just rebooting it with a younger actor (Pratt perhaps?).
What sucks though is studios will see this failure and say "well adventure films don't make money anymore", anytime an adventure movie script comes to their desk. They'll just keep churning out the same comic book junk.. So many great genres aren't making it to the screen anymore.
Movies are so CGI'd to death that you might as well be watching a cartoon with computer animation. For the life of me, I can't figure out why Avatar is such a hit...☺
If Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was scraping the bottom of the barrel, Dial of Destiny has dug past the bottom and 6 feet into the ground with bloody stumps for fingers.
so where i live no theaters in my 50 mile radius was playing john wick 4. first theater near my house played it one time opening day at 6pm on a Tuesday (5 dollar movie tickets on that day) so i missed it and was never played again idk why no one was playing one of the biggest movies out
Aloso there is a thing that people need to learn about Chinese Box office...and that Hollywood kinda uses to inflatebox offices...but they get little money normally is said that movies need to make around 2 to 2.5 times their budget because not only the movie theatres take that is 40 to 60 per cent depending on most regions...usually in the lower ends Chinan takes around 80 to foreign films...so unless a chinise company is helping them with the budget like with some transformers so , they don't lose that much to the government....the chinise take is more about showing off to the media and investors
I enjoyed the first three Indiana Jones movies. They were like roller coaster rides. You had thrills, you had action, you had humor. Now the reason I probably won’t see the Dial of Destiny is what I have heard so far. I’ve heard it’s a bleak, depressing and hard look at Indy’s life. I don’t want to go to a movie to be depressed, i want to go to a movie to feel hopeful. I go to movies to get away from reality for a few hours. I can just stay at home and watch tv if I want to see how crappy someone’s life has turned out. I think I’ll pass on seeing Indiana Jones exploits go out with a whimper instead of the roller coaster I’m used to seeing.
I predict that tomorrow will make the premiere of Howard The Duck or Ishtar, both look like 5 star blockbuster masterpiece bonanzas! The only good thing about Ishtar was Isabelle Adjani.
Studio's are relying more and more on cgi. i believe if this trend continues a lot more movies in the not to distant future will be completely cgi like video games. With speech programming getting better and better there will be no need for any biological entity to make a film and theoretically AI could create everything.
Actually, John Carter was a pretty decent movie, I've watched it a few a times and have absolutely no complaints about it. It was the victim of a dreadful marketing blunder, imo. Too bad, because maybe they could've made some great movies with all the ER Burroughs material. John Carter didn't deserve what happened to it..
People hate The Crystal Skull like they hate the Star Wars Prequels for some reason, I get it's not like the original 3 but it's still Spielberg and Lucas and the adventure is still there that made almost 800mil in 2008 which is pretty big for its time
I have always been a HUGE Indy and Harrison Ford fan, ever since I was a kid in 1977. However, I have NO interest in seeing this film as I think it just was not made or intended for me. It seems like it's target is for somebody else in a different demographic completely. It feels strange to say but,.....I'll pass.
You can't blame the Indiana Jones fiasco on so-called "superhero fatigue". People have wokeness fatigue. We're tired of seeing these toxic cringewoke Hollywood elites going so far out of their way to destroy beloved characters.
Sounds like a missed opportunity in Asia. Marketers should have realized the first three movies were never shown in Asia and should have remastered them and play them in theatres over there. Asian audiences would have been introduced to Indy and then would have been happy to hear a new one is coming out in 2023.
They had a cheaper route that would've had the old school Indy fans appreciating it. Close it out by filling the gap between the movies and the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles as in have Harrison Ford narrating about his last adventure which would allow him to also do some of the action stuff, but instead of spending a stupid amount of money de-aging Harrison Ford bring back Sean Patrick Flanery, who already has a history in the role as adult Indy from the 40s not long after The Last Crusade. Not the perfect look alike recasting but enough of a novelty that would tie up everything that actually is considered canon.
I’ don’t believe that The Flash only cost $200,000,000 to make - with all of rewrites, reshoots and cameos. I think Zaslov is lying because he’d be so embarrassed by losing so much, if he lies about how much it cost, it’ll look like it “lost” less money that it actually will.
Something often misunderstood about the China thing. It's only been 20 years since the wider public started having TVs, phones and movie theaters and not until about 2008 they were opening up to big Hollywood culture. (which has since started reversing) so for example: Chinese do not have a cultural memory of Star Wars. a massive part of the draw, the sales, the popularity of "Solo" is a nation who grew up with Star Wars and good ole' Han Solo! Chinese don't know that feeling. In a way, this is actually a good test to see if a movie stands or falls on its own WITHOUT relying on 'sentimental viewing' and cultural context etc. Chinese DO know 'superhero' types of movies and characters. They grew up with 'Journey to the West' and supernatural Kung Fu fighting types of movies. So here's what will happen: Aquaman WILL do just fine because it doesn't matter if none of them ever heard of 'Aquaman' anyway. It can be a standalone special effects super-fighting fun thing. The Black Panther can do fine even though none of them ever heard of The Black Panther. It can be a standalone Kung-fu master fight movie with superpowers and that's fine. THIS movie is going to be similar to Star Wars where they do not have a pop-culture sentimentality for good ole' Indiana Jones. There is nothing in China's culture that's going to see a movie poster icon like 'the whip' or 'the fedora' and good ole' Indie and compel them to buy that ticket. Keep in mind, they don't have the same cultural contempt for 'Nazis' so a preview clip of good ole American Indiana Jones giving that Nazi a punch! yaaaaa!! Mainland Chinese don't really get what that is. [ now, if a trailer scene showed Indie melting some WW2 japanese THEN YOU got something to sell tickets!!] There are other problems: Reviewers are complaining of far too many scenes where Phoebe disrespects Indie. She corrects him, she slaps and punches him, she frequently dismisses his plans for hers and slaps him into submission. THIS DOES NOT GO OVER WELL IN EAST ASIA. This is NOT likable in a culture of 'Filial Piety'. In fact, I'm almost surprised the CCP of Mainland China didn't ban the movie for that specific reason. In their culture the underling absolutely MUST obey the elder. period. Above all. above safety, above all else. You can do that in a movie but the Chinese audience needs to see her get her comeuppance since she, to their eyes, is the villain. IF Phoebe, the villain doesn't get taught a lesson and learns she should obey her superiors then WOW that is going to get disappointing reviews and the bad kind of word-of-mouth reviews.
Its not bad like the flash. Great opening 25 mins classic indiana. Biggest gripe Indiana's motivations are vague. The dial itself lacks mystique and supernatural powers like the ark, shankara stones and grail did. The crystal skull needed to be human not alien.
Harrison ford is a big actor from the past and the younger generation probably only know him from the new star wars film and don't see him as big to how we know him from all the films he done back in the 80's onwards
Harrison Ford hasn't been a draw since the mid 90s. He's had bomb after bomb after 2000 to Crystal Skull then nothing till Force Awakens. Unless he was playing established characters his films tanked.
It's so bad, I am not even seeing any attempts to reprint any Indy comics. The only plus to this movie coming out, I can get an Indy shirt and wait for the Xbox exclusive game.
Temple of Doom is still my least favorite. Indiana held his own. There are a couple of disappointing moments but even with some continuity issues with the "Dial of Destiny" it was an okay story.
I hope this turd doesn't damage James Mangold's career. He's an excellent director - given the right material. Ford, Waller-Bridge, Kennedy on the other hand: good riddance.
Why can't they just let old men be old men? He's old, he can't get around well, just let him use his brain to get out of such situations..oh but i guess that would require more writing. Let the young actress (who they think can be a star, LOL) do the action crap. Let that be her way of doing things, like we do when we're young and immortal. Hey, it worked in Lethal Weapon. Danny Glover was too old for that sh!t and Mel came in and was the action guy! Harrison looks like the star of Viagra commercials these days. Is Hollywood trying to force me into becoming a film writer?
Its not going to be "flirting with" John Carter, here is the math, actual production cost $300 million plus at least $150 million in marketing total $450 million, with an average of a 50% ticket split with theaters that means The Flash needs to make $900 million to break even, if it gets $350 million it will be lucky, that is a $550 million dollar loss, sure they will use accounting tricks like selling it to the streaming company they own to cover losses but in reality it is a $550 million loss. Indy 5 may be worse, we know it cost $332 million at the end of 2022 (the widely reported $295 million is BS based off incorrect conversion of pounds to dollars), that is before final re-shoots so probably $350 million, plus at least $150 million in marketing so $500 million and a 50% ticket split that is close to a billion dollars to break even, worst case projections were for it to make $420 million earlier this week, that would be a $580 million loss.
The thing about the movie is the phoebe portray herself as a money hungry woman. Then suddenly when comes to the end , she do a 360 and suddenly cares for history! Wth is that?! And by the way there’s a lot of ways you can earn money if you are a woman and willing do do anything for money. How does that sounds
