It's a fast-moving world. Child pop star Justin Bieber is now in his mid-twenties, the iPhone is over a decade old and Barack Obama has been out of office for over a year. For luxury brands, it's becoming more important than ever to stay relevant and fresh. So, as Rolex, a watchmaker that sees evolution and revolution as synonymous, takes its time to give the public what it wants, there's an opportunity presented for other brands to catch up. But has that already happened?

i have a grey side of the Moon, and wear it every single day to work where I'm a locksmith. it gets dusty, knocked around, and shocked, but it still looks absolutely brand new with no marks on it. on top of that amazing durability, it's drop dead gorgeous. it can be dressed up for more formal occasions, or dressed down and casual depending on the strap. Omega is killing it right now.

@@jfiazy are you absolutely sure about that? Have you had in on your wrist? Erick W Rolex was never, the final word in quality or aesthetics. It has become what it is today through successful marketing and branding strategies. And let’s not forget the high demand generated by the nouveau riche who have almost no idea what they’re buying save for the name and logo which they so desperately want on their wrists. I wouldn’t wear it if it was gifted to me primarily because I find it’s appearance boring, cheesy and even unpleasant at times. With their boxy cases and narrow, almost feminine, bracelets.

Omega has a lot of good things going for it lately. However their biggest problem when compared to Rolex is the fact that Omega is a master of diluting its own brand. They have pumped out so many different limited editions of the Speedmaster that it makes something like the Dark Side of the Moon seem irrelevant. Not because the Dark Side isn't a great watch with many milestones achieved but because to the average consumer it comes off as "just another Speedy Pro clone". Until Omega learns to be more reserved with their offerings and stop whoring out their various lines of watches to "limited editions" they will never be viewed as equal to Rolex.

But why would you want Omega to be viewed as "equal" to Rolex? Then car salesmen, golf players, pimps, and rappers would wear Omegas. That would be a reputation disaster Oo I still feel like Omega tries to balance their attempts at being more popular and appealing to enthusiasts pretty well.
@Milofchg
@Milofchg 5 лет назад
They come up with limited editions so that they can keep the Speedmaster Moonwatch as is. True as close as it can to the original. If it's not broke don't fix it. Omega knows some people will get board of it, and marketing can go so far before people just don't notice. This where the limited editions come in. Omega changed things up every year to two. Original Omega Moodwatch owners will be drawn to buy the limited editions, collectors will always collect limited rare watches, and people who want something different but want Omega.... It's a win win for Omega and everyone. Since they don't have Rolex marketing (Hollywood, luxury sporting event sponsorship). Omega has the resources to change and upgrade their product. Rolex relies on holding back, keeping production/manufacturing a top secret, "the best watches" mentality of non-watch consumers, plus the reputation of being expensive and only for the wealthy. Rolex (as a owner of a few Rolex watches) IMO and my experience Rolex is not as accurate as it claims to be. Yes Rolex are tough watches, they are timeless classics. Yes Rolex holds it value really well, as long as you sell on Ebay or as a private sale (never sell back to an AD or pawn shop). However, for all the fame and hype Rolex has, it does not live up to it. It only lives up to the stigma of a rich mans watch. Which it never was before the mid 80's. Rolex like Omega were tool watches with a few luxury references mixed in with the sport watches. I am a fan of both. I'm a Date Just/Explorer guy, but don't care for Omega dress watches. I'll take a Submariner over a Seamaster any day. I'll take a Speedmaster over a Daytona ANYDAY. I'll take vintage Omega over vintage Rolex because Omega has so much more to offer and you can find working vintage pieces at reasonable prices.

I wish Omega doesn't have so many editions but their creativity and willingness to try is admirable. I saw the DSOTM at a boutique a couple of weeks ago and was impressed by the lack of weight and the work they were able to do with the ceramic. Just a great watch. Perhaps Omega and other brands have already surpassed Rolex and we just don't know it. Branding, marketing and consumer tastes, like anything else in life, can slowly creep up on the general population and before you know it, all it takes is one expert to say something like Omega > Rolex and the tide changes.

The average person doesn’t even know omega. Rolex is known to every person on the planet. Rolex has brand recognition that nobody will ever surpass ever. When you think of expensive watch the average person thinks Rolex. That will take something massive to change. Right now omega just isn’t in pop culture like AP Rolex and patek are. Omega is a low end enthusiast brand right now. AP in particular I think has gained massive main stream recognition recently. Omega just doesn’t have that high end sexy image that other brands do. It for sure sells to enthusiasts but not the average person with money.

The new Omega Speedmaster Racing (44mm case) with the white dial is (for me) a Daytona killer. The dial has something like the texture from the Grand Seiko Snowflake to it, the tachy-bezel is a combination from ceramic and white enamel (filling for the engraved numbers) which gives it a stunning contrast. You get a date display and the case has a more interesting shape overall then the Oyster-Cases. I agree, that the daytona is (or maybe will ever be) the "hot watch", because it's harder to get and has the stronger history behind it then the modern co-axial Speedmasters. That's okay for me. At the end of the day, it's about the personal taste and from that point of view, the Daytona is a boring watch in my eyes.

Well, I am Swiss and grew up in the 1970s where Omega (and Tissot) were almost synonymus for the Swiss watch industry. Omega was founded in the very same year as modern Switzerland (in 1848). In my mind Omega always was "above Rolex"! I don't care about the hype and therefore the non-availability of Rolex models in general. (Maybe Omega would suffer the same problem if their models were as asked as Rolex' models. Luckily Omega does not suffer this problem.) I'd chose Omega over Rolex like 007 (James Bond) since 1995 (Pierce Brosnan)! 😇

I like how you can actually tell the time on the Daytona. That said the ceramic is stunning and a date window is welcome. Very analytical review, but as you noted - heritage seems to be key, albeit coupled with value. The Daytona’s evolution is akin to the Porsche 911. In 5 years that Daytona will increase in price whereas the Omega will be grossly discounted, despite its elaborate use of tech and design.

Hi I would like to point out that the ceramic Omega is very brittle I have a dark side and so far it has been back to Omega 4 times. Cracked bezle once. (Drop of less than 12 inches) onto kitchen worktop Broken stop watch buttons twice. (Dropped at the gym soft floor) And cracked glass once.(tapped a door handle walking past a door) Omega replaced the buttons and bezle free of charge and said it should not happen but would not replace the glass even though it was a crack on the inside cost £700. It is a good looking watch but for every day wear I would not recommend to anyone. I have the Daytona also and wear it most days. Do a small drop test say 12inchs with both onto a hard surface and watch what happens.

The most impressive thing I've found is that if you want to actually see the model you're interested in, it's typically available in the boutique for viewing. As for the ceramic Daytona, I've sadly never seen one in the flesh as they are unobtainable. As a nice bonus, the Rolex stores typically laugh at you for even inquiring about one. To everyone who said, “ill take the omega” This guy puts them both in front of you and said, don’t worry about paying me. Take the one you want. You’re all grabbing the Rolex lol. Stop.

You have a point but I would only take the Rolex to sell it and buy the Omega.

Id take the Rolex but only because the speedy would be too big for my wrist

People are only grabbing the Rolex to flip it, so they can then buy other watches.

@@rsr789 Yeah, that's the only reason. Not the iconic, classy design that doesn't try too hard.

What video would I like to see made? Oris 1917. Maybe compare to Longines flagship heritage 60th anniversary?

By coincidence I'm wearing now the Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon (not the Dark DSotM as shown in the video). It's an excellent watch and I don't see myself trading in the DSotM for a Daytona. The look and feel of the DSotM is leagues beyond the Daytona despite its size and thickness. The co-axial movement is a sight to behold and is quite accurate. That being said I have had a Rolex Submariner (114060) and the 3035 movement was at least on par with the 9300 co-axial movement, if not better when it comes to accuracy.

The weight of this watch is not nearly as heavy as I hoped for imgs.love/Rolexgraph I wear this on my right wrist and have my briefcase on my left. This is not too big of a deal, but I feel that if it weighed about as much as 1.5million in bills, a ki. (2.2lbs) of blow and my desert eagle .50 cal and the briefcase itself I would not be developing such a terrible lean. A lean is not such a bad thing in the gangster world but this is a bit too much.

Next watch on the list... pound for pound better than the Dayton. I think people like the Daytona more because it’s hard to get. Its a top watch but the dark side of the moon is technically more advanced and looks more modern.

I love the Daytona but found the size is to small on my wrist so ended up getting the Deep Sea 116660BLSO

Interesting video. Technology aside most collectors want what they can't have "easily". It's the hunt and not always the capture of the prey and in this case a SS Professional series from Rolex will always win over the great majority of other brands which as you articulated have much more to offer.

thank you wf for this amazing review and i think omega does a better job than rolex in many ways first: omega make new models than rolex second: omega found a way to neutralize the magnetic filds that affects the watch accuracy which rolex does not(i know rolex has the parachrom escapment which does do a good job keeping the accuracy but its not enough for me)

The new Omega heritage line is gorgeous. Rolex is also gorgeous. It's healthy to have such competition. I own a Sub but would gladly buy a Seamaster next time.

Is it possible to review the Rolex Milguass? I hardly see anyone do a good review of it despite just listing the spec and pointless complementing, but the watch is so unique thou

Lack of legibility and thickness are dealbreakers with the Omega, despite the fact that it's a relative technical marvel.

So I lusted after a Daytona to compliment my Kermit (original lol) but balked at the markup. I also have a Seamaster and have also lusted after a Speedmaster. After weighing up movement, value for money, availability etc I ordered a Grey Side with meteorite dial, sedna gold with clasp strap. Arrived last week after a two month wait and I absolutely love it. Truly impressed and I can only see it growing on me even more with time . It's a keeper!

You guys are truly experts from every angle. What a beautiful and detailled comparison of two wonderful watches. :) By the way: Ceramic has a much higher hardness than steel but its fracture toughness is many times lower compared to steel. I would be a little bit scared while wearing the speedmaster...but its still an extraordinary watch :D
@watchfinder
@watchfinder 6 лет назад
Thanks for watching! Ceramic is brittle, but it still needs quite the impact to damage it. A steel watch wouldn't look too pretty either!
