In this fun model kit review video, we'll be looking at Hasegawa's 1/48 Kawanishi N1K2-J Shiden (George), kit number J5. This kit was originally released by a kit manufacturer called Mania in the early 1980s. Hasegawa bought Mania's molds when Mania went out of business. In this video, I'll give a brief history of the N1K2, go through the kit instructions, look at the fit and surface detail of the exterior parts, look at the detail on the interior parts, talk about the quality of the decals, and talk about potential problem areas to watch out for. Is this classic kit still worth building? Let's find out together!

Proof, if any were needed that a good quality kit shouldn't be dismissed just because it has raised details. A skilled builder will be able to accentuate those details and look every bit as good as one with recessed ones. A pleasure to view another top class build from your good self! 👍👍

She’s a beautiful build. Haven’t built one yet, but the ease in which she went together one could have some serious weathering fun! Love these reviews of the forgotten Japanese aircraft! Thanks!

I built this very kit back in the day, probably when I was about 16 years old, and it was quite enjoyable to build. I believe it was the first time I had seen a model of a Japanese airplane that was something OTHER than an A6M, which was a big part of why I bought it. I still have it in a box out in the garage, waiting to be displayed again. Thanks, Jon!

Very cool, Jay! Thanks for sharing the memories. As a kid, the Japanese kits seemed so exotic and different than the norm with the great box art, interesting subjects, and instructions in Japanese. Also, the fit was really good compared to some American and European brands. Cheers!

Good morning from OHIO… Don’t know why I’m up… It’s amazing how JAPAN was able to design and develop New aircraft late in the WAR… Running out of materials… If that aircraft doesn’t look a little bit like a THUNDERBOLT I’ve purchased a few Eduard Photo Etch sets over the past few months… Also a company called AIRWAVES… DECALS have been on my list also… I like the technique using the mechanical pencil and the colored pencils… Everything about this build looks great… As you said, it’s perfect for someone with experience and skills, but a good stepping stone for someone to improve their skills… I’m working to improve my Airbrushing skills, trying to be more proficient, not waste paint and doing 2x the work Think my next kit / build will be something simple and straightforward out of box Keep working on mastering the airbrush… I plan on looking to buy a new one soon… LETS SEE WHAT HAPPENS Great way to start my morning 🥱 WAKE UP Chris 😮 Time for coffee ☕️ CHRIS 🇺🇸

Right on! The "George" could have caused the alies much more trouble if it had been designed as a land plane first. Instead, it was designed as a float plane, then a complex, mid-wing land plane, then the low-wing version seen here. By that stage in the war, material and fuel shortages and poor production quality crippled the Japanese defense industry. Cheers!

Good Morning Chris. Stick huge radial engines in any single seat fighter and they start to look like Thunderbolts, "How big an radial engine can we put in an airframe?". P&W R2800 = 2800cubic inches (46,000 cc's) is wow! Intercooler/2 stage turbo supercharger, even more wow! P-47 pilots always look small next to the aircraft. All the best for your day and your modelling, Matt 🦘🦘🦘

Hey Jon, it's awesome, really smooth and precise finish, plus one of the more robust looking Japanese fighters I've seen. I especially liked the cockpit interior details. 1/48 certainly offers more finish out than 1/72 cockpit detailing I'm continuing to improve on finish out techniques primarily due to your excellent videos. Cheers until the next build, Bob.

Excellent job and video! It’s about time for me to build some Japanese WWII airplane. Believe it or not I have never built one to date. This kit could be a great start. Thanks for your review!

Thank you! There were so many great aircraft fielded by the different nations during WWII. I wish there was time to build them all. Fortunately, there are lots of great kits of the Japanese aircraft. This would be a good first Japanese build. Cheers!

I agree. Though I would recommend the newer-tool Hasegawa release for more experienced modelers, this one holds up well and is worth a build if you have one in the stash. Cheers!

Hasegawa brought out the new tool George Fighter in 1/48 scale in 2000 - far more detailed than this older kit ( although very nice detailed model you built ) - my own model is the Kawanishi N1K2-J Shiden-Kai (George) `Late Version´ Hasegawa No. 09074 in 1:48 - I added to my own kit , the full etch sets by Eduard for the George . I also added the Fukuya Brass 20mm Barrels and Pitot tube , Montex Masks and the wonderful VECTOR Resin Homare Engine .

Very true. The newer Hasegawa-designed kit is great. I hope to review that kit at some point. It sounds like you went all-out on your George build, and I'm sure it turned out great. Cheers!

This "old" one is ok but the newer tooled Hasegawa George's from the 90's are primo excellent!

No doubt, the newer George is a great kit! I would like to build the newer Hasegawa-designed George if I get the chance. This one is still worth a build if you have it in the stash, and it is more appropriate for less experienced modelers due to it's very low parts count. Cheers!

Hello Jon, great review of this kit, in particular it looks excellent, the raised panel lines are like an anecdote, I was surprised by the decals, they look very good, the weathering itself was good, in perfect proportion, that's where you get in in the decision of how much and how the wear was on airplanes like the George, based in Japan, unlike the zero and others, from more improvised airfields, in short, an excellent video, I have the late version of this model in my stash, It differs quite a bit in terms of the molds. Greetings and until the next video.

Hi, Francisco. Thanks for the kind words. This was a fun kit to revisit and weather. I'm happier with the weathering results on this build than I am with some of my earlier weathering attempts. I would like to build the later Hasegawa release. It is a completely new-design kit by Hasegawa instead of a re-release of a kit designed by Mania. The later Hasegawa version is a great kit from what I've read. Cheers!

@@jonsmodelkitreview4624 Hello Jon, regarding the models with raised panel lines, it is quite an issue, I think it is correct that some brands like Airfix put the title vintage or rebox, the year of the mold would be ideal, I am in favor of it, but my total Disagreement is with those brands that sell old, bad molds, without details or fit, they pass them off as new, for example Revell or Mistercraft, the latter are horrible molds, their price in my country is variable but it is never economical in proportion to what the box brings, my congratulations to those who make those boxes and manuals, since the content is of a parallel dimension...

@franciscovenegas1810 I agree with you about the deceptive boxing. It's why I research a kit before buying. The Revell early Spitfire is a good example and one of the most disappointing kits ever. www.modelingmadness.com is a great resource for researching a kit before buying. I hope that helps. Cheers!

I haven't built a plane model with raised panel lines since I was a kid, but I don't think it would bother me at all. I liken it to armor models that come with vinyl tracks. A lot of builders hate the vinyl tracks, but I prefer their ease over the tedious and temperamental individual plastic links (or link and length) of the newer kits. A skilled modeler can make vinyl tracks or raised details look realistic and amazing. Thanks for another solid video.

Right on! Individual link tracks are mind-numbing. If you can finish an older kit well, the newer ones will make you look like a pro. Cheers!
