Those Otaki /48 scale kits were the bomb back in the day when thee black sheep squadron was on TV and Hasegawa was the top of the modeling game. Good times...Love the color profilees.

I have one in stash. Just waiting. There are 16 kits in the series. I have built the Me-109 kit as a wreck. I do like the kits. Almost got the whole series. 60 part count, easy to build. Popular subjects. They aren't perfect kits, but a great kits for uncomplicated builds! Some many aftermarket parts for the subjects that were offered in the series, not necessarily made for the the Otaki kits but will work just the same. And LUV those color profiles!!! Got'em pinned to the wall in my shop!! Boxes will go on the wall as well!!

Right on, Jeff! After building one of today's gazillion part wonder kits, the Otaki kits are a nice change of pace, and they do respond well to a few aftermarket upgrades. I smiled when you mentioned pinning the profiles on the wall - you're not the only one 🙂. That's what I do with box art as well. Cheers!

I’m BACK…. No matter what JON, you always give a great REVIEW Simple and Direct…. You have Introduced me to a lot of GREAT kits… Most importantly to ME Are the TECHNIQUES you have showed ALL of us…. From your last Video, I went to HOBBY LOBBY and bought PASTELS… Earth Tones, Black, Blue, Gray Tones and Basic Colors I think it’s a great technique for making a model kit POP… GLAD I Subscribed…. Thanks JON…. Yes, I am ENTERTAINED and INFORMED 😉 Model On…. CHRIS 🇺🇸

Thanks, Chris! One quick rule with pastels that I forgot to mention in the previous video - you can go darker than the base paint with pastels, but if you go lighter, the weather tends to disappear with a clear coat. I'd love to know what you think of pastels once you try them. Cheers!

I've had a long love/hate relationship with this model! LoL. Of course the Tamiya and especially the Hasegawa N1K1's are better but this isn't a bad kit, if for only the way too shallow wheel wells. 😩

Fortunately, the wheel wells face down on the shelf. Cheers!

Great review Jon! I agree a well designed simple kit Is a joy . Kids can build and have fun, and a great modeler can create a work of art.

For the time this was a very nice kit. Reminds me of some Fujimi kits from the same era. That’s a handsome George you’ve created Jon! Thanks

You are welcome. Would you be interested in building a 1960 1/48 Lindberg Douglas Skyray kit? I have one, I look at the castings, it may be a first run kit. All the parts including stand and decals are there, no instructions. I'm a model railroader ( that's just a excuse to build all kinds of models, ooh ooh I need that house!! ooh ooh I need that 365' bridge kit, real impressive in 1/48, my preferred scale, all though 1/144 kits of large subjects are kinda appealing!!!), and have more kits than I can really build, have to limit. Got a railroad empire to build!! So, if you would like a "challenge" to build an "out of the box", this is it. Raised surface detail and all that go's with that. Would be easier to re-scribe the entire model, rather than save the surface detail. Of course, that's the real challenge with surface detail. If you would like, I'll send you the kit just to see you do a video of this build. Just to be clear, free of cost to you. Got an Eduard fret of photo etch to go with it as well. Thought the Eduard exhaust tube would really help the old kit. No interior detail in the kit. Instruction sheet can be found at the ScaleMates.com review for this kit. And really, really sorry....... I'll be keeping the box............yea, the first issue box art. Drop me a line. Jeff And MODEL ON!!!!

Wow, Jeff, what a kind offer! Thank you. It sounds like the Skyray is from the same era as the Lindberg Thunderceptor I reviewed earlier. Like you, I probably have more kits waiting to be built than I am able to get to. I could promise to do an in-box review of the Skyray, but I just don't know exactly when I would be able to complete the build. I don't want to promise something that I can't deliver 🙂. If you're still interested in sending it, you can contact me directly at: jonsmotorcycle@hotmail.com No pressure, and thanks again for the offer. I would love to see some pictures of the railroad empire. Cheers!

Otaki/Arii were excellent back in the day. For the first time modellers in the West had a range of Japanese aircraft types in 1/48th scale that possessed quality and were well engineered for their time. These kits also included colour charts illustrated by R Watanabe, a Japanese aviation artist of high repute. Though still nice today, these kits have, of course, long been superceded by, firstly, Tamiya's simple but excellent N1K1 and, later, Hasegawa's equally good offering. A most enjoyable presentation. Thank you.

Hi Jon. Nice result for an older kit. It does convey the spindly (and so a bit dodgy) landing gear mechanism for the honking big Homare radial/propeller combo. The Hinomaru on the 1972 instructions are interesting, the last year of post war allied administration of Japanese territory. All three aircraft would be a good display of design development. (I can't get the float plane in Oz at this time but I'm still trying). Thanks for the review. Matt 🦘🦘🦘

Hey Jon, those plans were definitely deja vu and the picture in the box as well.. Amazing to get a kit these days for 5 bucks. I loved Otaki kits for all the reasons you mentioned . I always enjoy the way you finish out the kits. I'm thinking maybe you used a wash to bring out the panel lines. Washes in a dark green are difficult at best. I've been trying to master washes with some difficulty on paint mules. I'm going to try the next test on a flat surface over glossy as the flat surface offers more adhesion I may be wrong. Plus I may try oils. Your chalk technique is also working out nicely. The shorts you use to announce the builds is also helpful. Hope the Easter bunny drops off a kit or two for ya. Cheers till the next video, Bob
@jonsmodelkitreview4624
@jonsmodelkitreview4624 6 месяцев назад
Thanks, Bob! This build is an older one, and I would finish it a little differently if I built it today. Panel line washes flow better over gloss paint, and the excess is easier to remove on gloss. I apply the panel line wash with a fine brush directly to the panel lines. A filter, applied with a wide brush, works better over flat paint. I hope that helps. Cheers!

@@jonsmodelkitreview4624 Thanks Jon, that really helps a lot, both techniques really bring out the fine detail its just a matter of understanding gloss versus matt Enamels to acrylics - now I need to prepare a few more paint mules.

La calidad de tamiya no se pone en duda, otaki fue buena pero ya no
@jonsmodelkitreview4624
@jonsmodelkitreview4624 2 месяца назад
