This is my first time watching a tutorial about hatching and I felt like I was witnessing magic ! With how much information you can convey with simple lines, completely brings 2D forms to 3D. This tutorial changed the way I see hatching, it's not just straight random lines

This is the first hatching tutorial I've seen that actually makes sense. Imagine a grid, draw lines that follow the lines of that grid. How simple, and yet so effective...
Another thing i noticed is that you work layer by later with is really helpful with values because often times I try to get the right values off the bat. Thank you for the help!

I'm finding difficult to get great values in my inking process. My favorite ink drawings are from Albrecht Durer and I was always amazed/ intimidated by the. Fact his lights looked light and his darks were so smooth. Thank you so much for breaking everything down for us!

i got really amused as soon as you started describing the grid instruction, bc that is literally just the only way i am capable of drawing. to me, drawing is “carving” those wireframes out of negative space. i’m only pretty new to it, and not very disciplined, but it’s interesting to learn how many different ways there are to approach drawing.
@@vespertiliu thank you :) i’m not sure if i have that tho? i don’t think i have a visual imagination? i don’t see anything but dark grey fuzz when i try to imagine something. i just “know” what it should look like? i don’t know if that makes sense. but yes, i can definitely tell that being able to understand the shapes and curves of 3D space is a benefit when trying to achieve depth on the paper.
OH MY GOD- YES this is video is just what I need it! I love hatching but I don't have technique so it looks kinda messy and I do the mistake of trying to do it fast and not enjoying the process, I find this video super helpfull, and for sure I'll try to take the hatching process as a meditative activity, thanks for taking your time and share with us your knowledge, new susbcriber! also would be lovely to have a video about how you manage value with hatching!
This is one of the best explanations of hatching! I have made rolls like this for learning foreshortening as well! I will definitely be using these sketchbooks prompts to practice my inking! Your explanations are clear it's incredible
Thank you for doing this video which I feel was prompted partially by my recent request. You are a very good teacher. I especially like how you marked the cardboard tube - I have never seen any other teacher do that before. It is very useful.
Oh, its kind of like wireframe methods common in 3d software which follows basic shapes. So, along with grain/frame wire for smoothness depending on density of the lining and opposite/against the wire frame for a bit rougher look, again with amount of lining + mix of both for best of both world or something interesting..

Great video. Haha it’s like analog Blender. The hatching technique you’re showing off here remind me very much of looking at the polygon wireframes of a 3D model, which (when done efficiently) tend to follow the same kinds of contours.

Awesome video, love your work! I use the kotaku fountian pen, but I find my lines "break" a lot, like the ink isn't consistent or it will stop and go a lot. Do you find the pen you use has this issue ever? I love fointian pens, but I seem to have terrible luck finding something that can keep up without that breaking in the ink flow.
Hi! So my current fountain pen is actually great and feels very fluid, it’s actually a pleasure to work with BUT, as mentioned here, since it’s not designed specifically for drawing, it runs out of ink pretty fast. I think I have to change the ink filler every 10 days tops, sometimes even once a week. So let’s say that when it works it works wonders but it runs out of ink pretty quickly 🥲 However, I must say that you actually can’t tell much earlier when it starts finishing the ink! Which is a plus to me because it will work perfectly and then suddenly it will just have no more ink, so you almost don’t have that moment when it still works but it’s uneven and dry! It goes from working to empty and that’s it. Hope this helps :) 🦇♥️
