In Episode 173 of Mike Finnegan's Garage, we are loading up a bunch of sheetmetal parts from the front of my 1973 Chevy C30 ramp truck and taking them to the powdercoater. First, though, we have to do a little rust repair on the Roadkill ramp truck. After dropping all of the parts off for a coat of Satin Black powdercoat, we head back to the garage to mock up a pair of Nelson Racing Engines patented 88mm Mirror Image turbochargers. Get more info on the turbos by going here: nelsonracingen...
and check out their channel ‪@nelsonracingengines‬
We also used a pair of mockup headers from Stainless Headers. SH has a really cool service where it will take your ideas and dimensions and build a prototype header for your project that you can try out and then send back for revisions. Want more info? Go here: www.stainlessh...
Want to support the channel? We have brand new merch for ya at www.fsmgarage.com

Thanks for watching!

I love the nelson mirror image turbos, The one problem i have with them is, for a drag and drive, you'll need two turbos just in case, or the pluming needed to change orientation, just in case one fails that you don't have a spare for
@flipfloptanlines926
@flipfloptanlines926 2 года назад
This is true, heard KSR mention that. The drag and drive folks ive seen with the mirror images are carrying 2 turbo center sections, instead of 2 complete turbos. Saves alot of weight and doesn't take much room. I suppose somebody could design both hot sides to be the same and just have the cold side mirror image to match parts better
@crazylarryjr
@crazylarryjr 2 года назад

@RyTrapp0
@RyTrapp0 2 года назад
How often are you killing turbos? This doesn't seem like a very major concern to me. It'd be one thing on a real race car where you couldn't afford for a turbo to cost you a big money race, but with as dependable as turbos are(and the mirror image stuff comes from Precision turbo, about as quality as any other manufacturer), outside of that, this seems like largely a non-issue. It's not like Chinese turbos even fail that often - breaking Procharger head units sure seems like a bigger problem than the chances of killing a turbo. How many people even have a spare turbo? Again, outside of a real deal race car...

I’ve been fascinated with integrated-starter-generators for a while. Look at the Mercedes M256 engine which has no accessory drive at the front of the engine whatsoever. Cuts three inches off the length of your engine at least. There are other packaging advantages with things like A/C and hydro boost for power brakes and steering. The best is the electric water pump which can be set to run on after the engine is shut off.

Kicking debris up into the turbo has more to do with height above the centerline of the axle, not its front to back location. The bottom of the tire kicks back yes, but the top kicks forward. Other than being within an inch and right behind the tire low, the same amount of debris will be bouncin around almost anywhere under that monster of a hood

Whatever manifold you are using to mock up the header, put it down and go get the other one. Now mount it so that the log portion is underneath the head, with the outlet facing forward. Yes, it is going to interfere with the front motor plate, but it probably won't interfere with the upper A-arm. It is easier to modify the front motor plate than cut up and re-weld a set of headers. And yes, you may have to re-drill the bolt holes on the exhaust flange so that it bolts up to the head, or swap the exhaust flanges on the headers to avoid that.
@aSinisterKiid
@aSinisterKiid 2 года назад
I don't know how often you read the comments or not but maybe you might read this. In regards to the turbo placement perhaps you could do something similar to Tom Bailey's Sick 2.0 setup. He moved the engine a bit more forward and then put the Hi-Ram intake on backwards so the throttlebody is at the back of the block. This gave him plenty of room to run the intake a short distance to the turbos and have them up against the firewall behind the tires. This could solve some of the space problems with their mounting spot and give you enough room for the front accessories with minimal heat management issues. You could solve the rock problems with dedicated sealed intake snouts that go up to the hood.

AJPE 5.3 hemi, or P/S style engine. P/S engine, lower deck height, higher exhaust ports, same(better) flow cylinder heads. Already dry sump. Cheap(used). AJPE engine, sky's the limit displacement wise, dry sump already, accessory drive stuff available. And, HEMI Caddy!
