I worked at one of the stores in 1987. Every year, the mall put local Sprint Cars inside for people to look at. The cars were all in place, not being moved in or anything, no one was around but me and security. I was one of the last managers closing a store. I heard the rev of an engine, and squealing of tires, that echoed from one end of the dark mall to the other. I was glad to leave that night.
I worked at Your Place Pizza. One summer, the managers all had to go to rehab nearly simultaneously for coke addictions and a couple of us thought it would be fun to serve on skates. I still can't believe none of us broke our necks. My friend Cheri and I would see weird shit like glasses moving. One time, we both walked up on a platform and saw a tray standing on its edge on a table. We cleaned the black lamps along the walls together whenever we could because we heard whispered conversations and no one was there. I never knew anyone else had experiences like that.
I worked at arbys at that mall back in 99 i loved that mall, i loved Reading, i I went back after a 20 year absence to take my kids to the city i loved.... Fairgrounds mall closed (dead) the city itself on a saturday afternoon dead. The best part was the city park it is similiar to how i remember it but when the nostalgia wore off it is decaying and unkempt, hornet and bee's nests broken tree limbs. However the blacktop basketball court and the Sailors memorial was cool to see. I really wish there were still the outlets i didnt apreciate them when i was younger but now i want that experience.
I used to work at Air Graphics and many times the faucet in the back bathroom would turn on full force and then go back off again. I also had times where clothing would move from where I left it, and I would hear random noises of things being moved around in the back room when I was the only one there. I heard a story that we were sitting on the old "Turn 4" and it was where most of the crashes took place during the time when it was a raceway.
This made me think of an old friend of mine, who's uncle was Toby Tobias. If there's old drivers haunting that area, I guarantee he's leading the pack (as usual).
Nice racing details. My family moved to Reading from CA in mid 80's because my father went to work at Penske Racing. Still remember going to this mall and the fairs they still held outside of it..
Spent a lot of time there over the years. We had sleep overs there with Camp Fire Giirls and we would hear noises and car like rumbles, especially near center court
I still miss the actual fairgrounds! Saw my first concert there...saw many races...first met Michael Constantine there at a fair...and our Sparkies Drum and Baton corp would use the place on Saturday mornings for practice in the pavilions where they kept the livestock for the fairs. Then the mall came... And went....
Many drivers from Reading Fairgrounds would never step foot in the mall because it replaced the racetrack. Which makes me wonder, why would spirits wish to go back there? I get it, to scare people away, but why would they return to the place that once housed their racetrack?
Jackie Evens. I heard 77 randomly showed up on a register close to the spot he ended up at when his car stopped flipping. Anyone else hear of this? There was also a track official killed I think but a separate incident.
The information in this video is not accurate. There were more than 3 drivers who lost their lives at the speedway. The area today where Jud larson and Red Reigel were killed is in the parking lot outside of Burlington . Same with John Hubbard. Who was killed in the first turn as well. Jackie Evans was killed on the front stretch and so on. I was told by my Dad who raced there that a few sprint car drivers from pre RSCA and USAC days also lost there lives at the track. Probably from the AAA Era. The track has a lot of history and was almost like a battle field with automobiles. So spiritual activities are possible if you believe in that sort of thing.
To be fair I said "there were at least three deaths", but you are right. There were many more. I compiled them all in an article I wrote here: berksnostalgia.com/reading-fairgrounds-speedway-plaque-dedication/
