Have I been wrong about Chester's screams?! 

Very few teachers would put themselves out there openly admitting they are learning something new and showing all the ugly work that's behind learning new techniques. You are the man sir.

QWERTY is one of the most insane LP songs and it's a shame that they never put it on an album 😭

The back and forth between screaming, fry screaming and clean singing just floors me. How he can go from one to the next and back so seemlessly. He really was an incredible vocalist.

Chester has one of the most unique screams I've ever heard. I don't even know what to call his type. His face is never really still and shapes the sound that soars from his vocal chords. In my opinion, it's still one of the hardest to replicate today.

Chris is one of those dudes that just seems like a cool guy to hang out with. Super knowledgeable but humble at the same time.

wow, this vocal performance is insane. I love chester but this might be one of his best performances. At least if we talk about technical complexity and execution. Fast, extreme rapping, then totally clean singing without a break to breath? how? Thanks for this discovery and also analysis. I don't know how he even kept this up. I'm struggling with fatique (I'm pushing a lot and my diaphragm gets tired quickly) and wonder how did he have the breath and stamina to do all this. Especially since he looks VERY tense.

What makes you incredible, is that you, unlike many teachers I had, make it so understandible by first making a fool out of yourself with the primal noises... but these are easy for us to understand and mimic... making sure we know we are on the right track (or not). Amazing work!

Hearing "and one" live, also sounds like one of his best performances

That scream at the very end is soo him. So iconic. It's almost like a tidal wave where you feel it before it even hits you and it sounds massive. It's very strange and hard to describe actually. What's interesting to me about his screams is that it's not abrasive but still very smooth and musical. It's almost like a guitar amp cranked up. I always hear people pointing out that he did fry screaming as if it was something to look down on but I heard Chester warming up backstage once and I can tell you that none of the screaming was some quite fry screaming. Like the long notes he holds on the screams might sound to you as a fry scream cuz his saturation is so smooth, but to me that sound was a full-on loud screaming my lungs out kinda stuff. His vocal stamina was extraterrestrial to me.

Chester lowkey got my into screamo but in a slower dosage. I loved their sound and when he screamed on songs…you felt that shit in your soul. I’ll always remember where I was and what I was doing when I found out of his death

This version of QWERTY was one of may favourite songs of my teen years and we used to listen to it all the time with my friend on my crappy phone speaker haha! Brings back memories. Chester's screaming is almost unbelievable in this version. Thanks for covering it, what a nice surprise!

Chester was totally unique. I loved him and Mike as a duo. They're so different but they worked so well together. Loved your analysis. This performance was amazing.

Hey Chris! I've recently begun listening to Chester's "project band" called Dead by Sunrise. He experiments sound and technique with this band that he wasnt comfortable releasing with Linkin Park and they released one album. I recommend giving some of the songs from this project band a listen and/or reaction sometime! "Walking in Circles" really puts his transitions from clean to distorted on display quite well

Fellow Chester's powerhouse screaming enthusiast here 😅 Just like you, I'm also very passionate about this subject, the raw emotion projected on those screams was just so insane and cool, I too have been trying to achieve something similar just out of pure enjoyment and appreciation. If you want to check my approach, I haven't covered QWERTY yet but songs like Figure 09 and Lost in the Echo should be good examples. The song toxicity, in particular, has a scream at the end that I don't understand how it can be done without breaking up.

Yes. This is what I was talking about with all that "fry screaming etc." on Chester. The "gag motion" is more like it. You are closer to getting it. I find that there is more gag than what you are doing right now. The gag has the "wet distortion" in Chester's scream. I personally use the gag motion a lot, i refer to it as "false fold fry sound" or if I were to add much more support a "(false fold) fry scream". I believe and also you now i suppose, it is what Chester does. Just more voice in it. Love this content.

I was watching the first minute of the video and when you were talking about the song, I was like, well I think it is QWERTY.

the way Chester screams low and high combining together. i was blown away by his vocals. i tried to do the same technique years ago until now. Even the transition between screams and sings on the chorus was the hardest part (For example: A Place For My Head before the last Chorus, and Forgotten at the bridge). I loved QWERTY when i discovered this last year. it was amazing and energetic, and heavy. i hope this song should appear on MtM20 almost 3 years from now.

The thing I love most about his screams is that he sometimes adds vibrato to it. Figure 09 being one of the songs where he does it in the chorus. He usually does it at the end of belting out the last word in the sentences in his chorus. It's also in Lost where he screams lost. Or in fighting myself when he screams the word apart.

I don't think Chester was practicing a "technique". I think his voice, mouth position, etc. just came from the emotions he felt in the songs. We miss you Chester

Chris, I read in an interview a long time ago that Chester's idol was Sebastian Bach. I can hear a lot of that in Chester's voice in a wide array of his songs. Would you consider doing a video that really analyzes Sebastian's voice, and your take on what he's doing? Quicksand Jesus, Slave To the Grind, Wasted Time, and I Remember You would all be great songs to dig into. His melodies were acrobatic, and the different types and levels of grit and distortion are pretty epic; not to mention his range. Thanks man. Love your channel.

Its like he doubles his vocals in his own throat. One clean take with pitch, then a screaming distortion take. Its crazy. Also, to me, when he sings normally it sounds like hes singing out of his nose.

One thing that it's always felt like Chester has done, solely based on how the sound feels like it should sound (if that makes sense), it sometimes sounds nasally in the sense that the sound is placed behind the tongue, like you're trying to push it out your nose but you're keeping the nasal passage blocked. So basically you're trying to sing it out your nose but blocking that off, giving it this unique kind of sound when doing screams. I've only ever noticed this in live performances, I've never heard it on a record. There's a live performance of Points of Authority out there somewhere, which I got a burned copy of way back in the day that had a clear example of this at the end of the song, where he screams "Why, mother f*cker" but I haven't found a video for it yet. I've usually done this with a fry scream myself and it still sounds pretty cool. I still can't do the techniques you've been showing but I have to wonder how it sounds, if it's even possible.

First time i watched linkin park live at Manchester 2001 i knew this was a special band.

I haven't heard this song in years but I can't recall hearing it as a live version. I could be wrong but I have a feeling this is a demo to the track that was essentially a demo. Great performance as always but the track I remember, there seemed to be a lot more confidence in the performance especially from Chester, even if it wasn't as vocally technical. A damn brilliant song in any regard and in the end, sounded like he voiced the wntire band being pissed off just by his vocal presence

I am amazed at how you've improved so much considering you were amazing before too, your understanding of these scream techniques is honestly so impressive. I wonder if youre gonna do a full blown "fry scream" episode anytime soon, kind of like the technique we hear in Lamb of God or Death? I tried so hard to get that scream to work but I still havent quite gotten it.

Chester was a vocal God. Gone way too soon. Another great vocalist we lost is Matt Holt from nothingface, he had SUCH a powerful voice, brutally beautiful and worth checking out if you haven't. Chester, Matt (Nothingface) and Cameron (American Head Charge) had some of THE most dynamic, unique and all out bad ass voices I've ever heard.

Hey Chris. Relatively new here. I LOVE Chester's vox. One thing I've been curious about is volume of the screams. (I've got a choral background, so healthy screams/growls are super intriguing but scare me to really dig into personally so far). I don't think I've ever seen someone use a dB meter before the mic to discover the output volume of the sound before the mic picks it up and amplifies it to describe the expectations of screaming. Is that something you'd consider doing/discussing/think is helpful?

A vocalist with a similar sound to Chester I'd say is Andrew Neufeld from Comeback Kid. A pretty good example song would be "Didn't Even Mind" from their album Die Knowing. I'd like to your take on how he does it.

Man I’ve been trying to get my low screams to get lower and have made maybe a half step or whole step deeper in like 6 yrs 😭 also “breeeees”… I’ve watched countless videos on brees/banshee screams and for the life of me can’t figure it out. Got tunnels for days but the bree is ever elusive.

(I translate through a translator) I think I understand correctly how it’s done, now I want to explain how I understood it. on weak sounds you can add arytenoid cartilages, screaming is obtained on weak notes, we add to this a slight tension as in fry scream, and together this sound should give this sound. air through the arytenoid cartilages + fry scream + regular Chester note
