It has been 4 months and 13 days since I last uploaded a video Hey y'all. Sorry for not uploading for like all of fall. Been pretty busy with college classes, so I haven't really gotten the chance to upload or stream the past few months. But that's hopefully gonna change! I'm planning on uploading once every other day this winter break, streaming 4 times a week, and when the next year starts, hopefully still doing at least 2 videos a week and some livestreams. Taking a break really made me miss uploading RU-vid content, so I'm super motivated to get back to it. Hopefully y'all will still be there for me! Also, I caught covid AGAIN and that's been a pain, so I can't really stream for a bit either. Anyhoo, thanks for coming by, leaving a like and a comment really does help me get back to the platform I used to have! Talk to you guys soon -Omicron

As someone who has played Minecraft as a kid but hasn't played the game in years and has only made aware of the new textures through this video, I vastly prefer the new textures. I like the extra detail put into them, and honestly I feel like they've improved the look of the textures without taking away their Minecraft-esque identity. There is one game that is kind of similar to Minecraft that I'm way more passionate about, and that game is Terraria, which got tons of sprite changes over the years. I never disliked any of the sprite changes made in Terraria, and have never seen anyone complain about that either. So it seems this texture change discourse is kind of exclusive to Minecraft.
@Straline.
@Straline. Год назад
I think that's just because people really liked the more in-depth and detailed Terraria textures. It's what the genre is known for. I also think that mc players want the old look for nostalgia, while terraria has a lot of newer players.
@steamingpileofspaghetti9755
i think the main reason, is the fact that so many textures stayed for so long, and then they just updated them all at once. if they had spent the last 10 years constantly replacing textures with newer better versions, (like terraria) there never would have been a problem. they kinda did this in the first couple of years actually. gravel, grass, and cobblestone, all went through several changes before they became the iconic ones.

I think the majority of people that will heavily agree with the texture changes are builders. Generally speaking, the textures are less noisy (I wouldn't say more "saturated", that's not quite the word) and some are less saturated (think mossy cobblestone) in order to fit in with block palettes. Usually, the more desaturated, the more natural; colour theory proves it. I honestly think none of the textures are a downgrade except for maybe diamond ores (Jappa changed the ores because of accessibility reasons, totally understandable). It would be a lie, subjectively, to say any of the textures *look* worse. There's just a lot of nostalgia attached to it, instead. For the record, playing since 2013.
@emilycolt9880
@emilycolt9880 Год назад
This!!! Building is so much more fun with newer textures. Before 1.14 I made a point of not building with mossy cobblestone because it stuck out so badly that it was almost impossible to integrate in a way that looked good. Now I love all the mossy blocks and use them constantly, and it's allowed me to explore the overgrown building style which is now my favorite style to build in.
@magmafang

And artists as well, especially those who make textures (pixel art). I kind of got into pixel art and Minecraft texturing around a year ago and I agree with your point. I myself also prefer most of the newer textures because they are smoother, have better shading, and for me they are just overall more aesthetically pleasing. Of course, not all of the new textures are an improvement to their older counterparts, but I feel like as someone who enjoys making visual art, I have more of an affinity to these newer textures.

In my opinion, the only texture that underwent a visible downgrade was the texture of fully grown wheat. The old one with its black tops and brown stalk looked sooo good, and the new one feels very weird due to it having no vertical color gradient. I feel like they DO actually keep whats iconic about them, just are better, more skilled and consistent pixel art. Wait what? You're saying the Diamond Ore texture is dull but Omicron also dislikes it for the opposite reason of being too saturated. The older texture is definitely paler than the newer one. The only thing I can think of people hating it for other than level of saturation is that it has a gradient into the stone color since it might de-emphasise the overall shape it was recognised for.

I don’t understand why people get so angry at people who prefer the old textures. They just have rose-tinted glasses for the new textures because ”new is good”, and refuse to acknowledge that the new textures just look generic and unprofessional. I just don’t see what’s so much better about making everything look muddy and noisy. New textures are such a mess, and show no understanding of the 16x16 format what so ever. Old textures where actually designed, while the new just look like they where drawn by someone who just learned how to draw.

It's not about programmers being tasteless or whatever shit some might say, it's about them having the other, way more important stuff to do. It's not efficient to bother them with designing visual part of the game further than sketches for the design docs, which are a must-have thing for every dev team since it allows for easy understanding and communication on what AND HOW each dev has to do. And yes, artists are a part of dev team unless we're talking about outsourcers which isn't the case for MC. They also "actually making the game" and if they were hired after the plan for the game was set up (or were missing when team discussed their plans on the game), they'd easily get every tiny bit on how the game should look and feel like from properly made design doc and could bring up even more great ideas since they are the artists - people who often have better intuition and understanding on how to make people feel in a certain way. I'm talking as someone who's both studying programming at uni and learning design by himself while modding some simple games and trying to mimic their style. @@dustronyt4565 Well, i will not adress the whole comment but Its true, artists are part of the dev team, but its clear that the art direction and feeling of the original textures compared to the new ones is completely different in their more retro look. What i was trying to say thay overall Jappa was trying to make Minecraft look more like your modern average indie game by making things shinier and with less contrast (i really like the dark outlines btw), as after all it was made after quite some time since Minecraft was released and its popularity grew, while the original ones fit more with what the devs were thinking as the features were added. In my opinion the new cobblestone is the worst offender of them as it looks so lifeless and uninteresting, almost covered in sugar, even the first versions of the new cobblestone looked way better than what is now, which is pretty bad if you consider how cobblestone is one of the more iconic elements of Minecraft world. in fact if you looked at the first version of Jappa "default" many textures like grass, cobblestone and even netherrack look way better than what we got.

In my head the nostalgia part and the artist part of my brain are fighting against each other. The colors are a million times better in the new textures, the coherent art style makes is so much nicer so look at (although I feel like the new brush item does not fit the art style actually) and the shape of these items it just all comes together to create such a pleasant art style… but sometimes I just miss the old textures - or maybe I miss the time that I associate with those textures

This is fine for 2D art but straight up just doesn't work in a 3D environment. As an artist and a builder, the older textures were charming on their own, but they obviously were not made by professional artists with a unified vision of how the game should look, and it really shows when trying to make cohesive build palettes. I also think jappa's textures are incredibly respectful to the original game (probably one of the best retextures of a game I've seen) and the backlash against them is super unfounded and fueled by nostalgic rage. You don't have to like the new textures, but I think accepting and understanding why they were needed is important.

The new Textures give me heavy "this block is clearly modded" vibes. Also from an art perspective, idk seems like it doesnt belong in pixelart, since pixelart usually is more simple and has less different colors, it just looks ugly. Not all new Textures are bad imo, like glass is a bit better. But glass has the old pixelart style with less different colors, i don't know why the new artist thinks its better to have so many shades in pixelart

As someone who's played old Minecraft on PC and XBox 360, I never had much of an issue with the new textures. In fact, I didn't even know just how many were changed because many of them were very subtle and yet I still liked them. I also found that at least on Bedrock Edition, there is a texture pack that replaces the new ones with the old ones so I think that should be a thing in Java as well to please both crowds.

in my opinion, the texture designs themselves in modern minecraft are far better than they used to look in alpha and beta - especially the item sprites. They're still very saturated now, I for one wouldn't call any of the new textures more "washed out" than the originals looking at the side by side comparisons, most textures are still just as vibrant, if not moreso now... instead I think the issue is the lack of contrast - a lot of the textures and sprites use a ton of in-between shades and hues now to smoothly blend different colours, adding tens of new pixel colours to the games' palette with every new item or block, rather than making use of a more traditional pre-defined colour palette, relying much more on contrast or techniques like dithering... the game is definitely going for a smoother, more natural look but because the low resolution of all the textures hasn't changed, being 16×16, it just feels like there's too much extra, unnecessary detail crammed into each sprite/texture compared to before.

I first played Minecraft on the Xbox 360 around 2013, and while the old textures were nice and charming, the new textures do a far better job of giving Minecraft a consistent art style and feel. Looking back at older Minecraft gameplay, everything feels washed out, and all of the sprites have really rough borders, but now everything feels soft and smooth while retaining slight borders to keep that simplistic charm.

I have been playing Minecraft for more than 10 years, playing for the first time when minecraft mobile used to be called minecraft: pocket edition. As much as old minecraft has more iconic textures and I have a deep nostalgia for them, I really like the newer textures. My opinion is that the textures from old minecraft were a little bit of a mash of different styles, and some textures did not blend well with others. The newer style of minecraft really helps to blend all the textures together and allows minecraft to have one constant style. The newer textures, at least for me, are much more pleasing to look at. Although, I still would like mojang to update the Programmer Art resource pack to re-imagine the newer update blocks and items post 1.14 in the older style. It would be really cool to see stuff like deepslate or any other new block as such.

The biggest issue with the old textures is because they weren’t standardized. The old textures didn’t really have any consistent style, and weren’t standardized. The main point was to add consistency. Even as someone who has been playing since 2013, the old textures just look flat to me. The new ones have this implied depth, which really makes the game feel more immersive. I’ve also seen polls that show most people do prefer the new textures. It’s really a vocal minority that took issue with it.

this is what i think happened: mojang knew that no one like the old netherack textures (because tbf no one did) so they changed it to the modern more slick netherack we know today. but then we have modern textures next to old looking textures. so they those textures. basically it was a chain reaction. plus it would be hard to make new textures for new blocks know they HAVE to use the old style. personally i like the new textures. it'd be weird to have the old ones since they are so ... well yk, OLD. it went the same for fortnite and other popular games. u look at older versions and it doesnt look the same. sure its nostalgic but deep down everyone knows they dont want the old textures back. it just wouldnt feel the same.

I think you just have rose-tinted glasses for the new textures. Can’t stand how unprofessional and blurry the new textures look, myself. The old textures have a better aesthetic, not to mention how much better they’re made. Distinct designs that not only fit the blocky world and look unique, but also often remain vague enough that they can be creatively used for multiple purposes. Funny how the old textures, drawn by programmers, show a better understanding of art than the supposed ”artist”.

I like individual old textures better for the most part (including netherrack) but I think overall many blend together more. The world looks smoother. That comparison you showed of the cave entrance in the desert was a great example. I like the old textures of each of the blocks, but the one on the right just feels like a world. I’m not thinking “wow the sand is cool” with the right, it’s looks worse imo, but the cave looks better. Hope this makes sense. Also, at least with Lunar there’s a “classic art” texture pack if you want to have new features with old art. Lava is another great example. I adore the old lava texture so much more, but lava pools and lava falls (in the overworld) don’t look very good.

A lot of new mobs have fancier animations than older ones, and blocks like fences look outdated even with the new plank textures, next to a block like a blast furnace or a lecturn. I dropped the new textures into a mod called Better Than Adventure, which is based on Alpha, and they look really good, because the artstyle and presentation was consisteny.

1:47-1:53 I think the main reason why is that they got a new pixel artist. He had his own look at the game and what it should look like. old video but I want to share my opinion. As someone who has been playing the game since around 2011, I personally think that the texture change of 1.14 was a good thing, not only for the game, but the look of it too. Updates are a massive part of the game, and with new blocks with new textures getting added in every version, the older ones stand out, as if they were from different eras. Builds also look much better with the new textures. In the same way that shaders can make even a dirt hut look decent, the new textures also make our builds better. I remember when the new textures initially came out, like a lot of other veterans, I was very hesitant. Four years later (holy hell it’s been a while) I think the texture changes have really benefitted the way the game looks, even if it did lose a little but of that nostalgia.
