Have NO REGRETS! Watch This Before You Buy A New Compact Tractor! 

I've 4 acre of pasture and 5 acres of woods. I'm a "City slicker" who adores the country living, we too have a Husqvarna with a 4" deck and it's strong, but not for 4 acres, we use it for the parts of the lawn surrounding our house, which "Johnny" is a tad to heavy for. I bought my Johnny 1025R because this was nearest Tractor dealer to my house and the service is very good. I would have gotten me a MF but wasn't silly enough to drive 100 miles to have it serviced. I bought Johnny brand new and bought is with the belly mower, this though is my biggest regret, not that the belly mower isn't good, it is, but it defeats the versatility of Johnny. So I've got me a flail mower and retired my belly mower, because I grew tired of having my lawn always shaved off on a small ridge in the soil.... Tim, keep rocking, I enjoy your content a lot and actually bought my Johnny because of watching and following your channel!! :)

I also want to comment that I have bought attachments from dealers that Tim has suggested with his discount TTWT. I have never been disappointed. Tim thank you.

Hey Nolan, I've been a long time subscriber of TTWT and used his videos and advice to finally get my compact tractor last year. I have only 15 acres and went with a 1025R and I have no regrets what so ever. I love the backhoe. Its a very capable machine and easy to operate and store. Lots of good advice in the video Tim. ( as always )

This was an excellent discussion. I have had my BX2200 tractor for 21 years and at the time of purchase the storage space was the issue that kept me from adding a loader which I really could have used and wanted, but now I have been heating my house with wood and move some pretty large pieces of wood around and need to find something with a lift capacity greater than my BX tractor would have had. Additionally, when I purchased my BX tractor they had just come out so there are so many more accessories available both from the manufacturer as well as the 3rd parties that you have shown so well. Those 21 years on me have also made me appreciate the hydraulics so much more. Thanks for sharing your insights on this equipment it helps a lot.

Great advice Tim, for this young man. I bought a 1025R , and have several attachments, and implements that gives me more creativity in use. My " grapple" and loader are the most versatile .

I used much of this advice when buying my B2650, especially the part about talking to the service dept. They’ve been very helpful, even taking a part from one of the floor models for me so I didn’t have to wait for the new one to ship.

Enjoyed the video Tim with Nolen. I've had my 1025R since 2016 which included mower, loader, backhoe, and fork attachment. I only have an acre of property but I use it on my neighbors property almost as much as my own. My wife and I are big gardeners and we always have projects that we need our tractor for. Hey Tim don’t forget to tell Nolan if he’s doing work for other people he will have budget in a trailer and tow vehicle if he doesn’t already have one. Also liability insurance, a $150 tilling job gets expensive when you rip out the guys main feed line to his sprinkler system he forgot to tell you about or his well head that you back over that was hidden in the Long grass, or the Septic D-box that gets crushed . These things happen, trust me. (30 yrs plowing New England snow!!!)

I bought a 1023E TLB configuration new in 2012. I also got a heavy duty barn-style 12X20 fabric shelter (around 1300). It's still in great shape. Got a bunch of stone spread out to put the shed on top of, and tied it down. I have 2.2 acres, and after a few years, decidedly have done more than 20,000 dollars of landscaping work and clearing. I separately have a x310 with a mower deck and snowblower for the driveway and mowing. I got that in 2015. I've dug up over 50 stumps (large pines) and moved logs (pines felled) and made a log bridge over a stream out back to get to the back of our property. This channel (and a few others) inspired me to get this tractor. Thanks all.

Great advice. We just went through this process. We have an acreage (13.5) that we’ve had for a year. I test drove a BX2680 and a 1023E, but after talking to my JD salesman he suggested a 3025E. Ended up getting a new 2018 3025E (old stock) for the same price as a new 1025R, with a tiller and the 300E FEL. So far I’m SO glad I went with the slightly bigger tractor. Keep up the great videos and great advice! 👍🏻

I’ve had my Massey Ferguson. Gc1725mb for a year and I love it!!! I bought this size tractor so I could still move it around without having to have a huge trailer. So portability is something to consider. Don’t forget to consider a quick attach !!

I've got 12 acres that I've taken care of for years with a Simplicity Prestige with a 54" deck and a cart. After fourteen years bought a zero turn commercial to get the mowing done faster. Mow about five acres. Rest is wooded. But there were still many jobs around the property that I couldn't get done and so started to look at sub-compacts tractors. After much research it came down to the Kabota or Deere. Watched many TTWT videos, which were very helpful in my decision. Final decision was the 1025r with bucket, backhoe, mower deck and a brush crusher. Decision came down to the dealer proximity for service. So far, quite happy with my purchase and the dealer service has been great so far. Working on getting a shed for it now.

Picked up a 1025r TLB just over a year ago. I have used the backhoe for numerous jobs already and helped others with stuff too. Used much more frequently than I thought we would have already

I debated and researched sub compact tractors for about 2 months to find the best one to suit my needs, Your videos made my decision easier after seeing all that the 1025r could do. I bought my 1025r about a month ago and I love it!! This little tractor has all the power and versatility I need to get things done on our 18 acres of land.

Greetings! I have 10 acres, dirt road, 6 acres of grass and 4 acres of woods. I bought a 1025r about 2 yrs ago with loader, box blade, snow blade and brush hog. It has done pretty much all the jobs I want to do around the yard. I looked into a sickle bar for it, but that was really expensive, however I've been able to get by without it. Obviously do your research, visit dealers and even check out the used market. Good luck!

I have a 234 hydro-static international compact tractor it's 36 years old, I just build my own tools that I put on the 3 point hitch! When I got this tractor it came with snowblower and woods mower for the 3 point hitch. In May this year the pin in the transmission that shifts hi-low broke. I thought I'd never get it fixed with this COVID going on. I was able to take it apart by myself and fix it. It took me 75 hours to take it apart and took me less than 8 hours to put it back together. I had 1 hydraulic line leak but was able to fix it the next day!

Great video Tim (et ux!) And a very suitable format for answering common questions (and helping folks avoid common mistakes is a great place to start.) Looking forward to more! Great point on the parking spot, very common issue. I'm hoping you manage to cover a bit of the used market for folks without the resources to buy new in the next two vids! Don't forget the lawn tractor vs. garden tractor differences; a garden tractor could fill some people's needs for snow removal, tilling, finish mowing, or maybe very light loader (wheelbarrow replacement) work. They come in 4 wheel steer, 4 wheel drive, diesel, etc. variants, but often their cost balloons past a 1023e...but for some folks they're perfect.

The biggest thing to consider when purchasing a sub or compact tractor is the transmission. If you're doing mostly mowing and front end work a hydro is just fine. If you're doing some field work , plows , disc , etc , do NOT get a hydrostatic.

After many hours of research and videos from TTWT and Good works it was an easy decision, i purchased a new 2018 1025r and got a great deal as it was old inventory. I love my tractor, i have ten acres so it will be put to good use. Thanks for all the helpful advice tim.

I started out with a 2210 and used it, but had decided I needed to step up and traded my 2210 for the 4115. I now have the 4115 and am satisfied and the attachments still fit from the 2210. The dealer is knowledgeable on the attachments to make sure if they will fit the next application(tractor), that you may purchase.

Good discussion and good advice as well. Of course watching your past episodes with attachments and advice should be “required” watching for the new compact tractor shopper. Enjoyed it as always, and blessings to you folks.

Great video! Thanks Tim (& Nolan), so many of us have struggled with how to go about choosing a new tractor and what to consider is most important. I've spent the last year (almost) researching, viewing and configuring multiple tractors (Kubota, Massey, Kioti and Deere). It's people like you Tim (and Neil at Messicks) that have helped me to really understand the differences in makes, models, attachments and implements. All in all, I finally came to a decision for our 2.5 acre property and am proud to say we will be getting a new 2038r with loader, box blade, and auto connect mid mower (hopefully delivered in the next week) to manage all our property needs. Just took delivery of my 1025r this week and this is my first time owning a Deere. Like Tim says I love that seat time. Went with loader and backhoe option and have already put 8 hours on it. Tim your videos helped me decide on my tractor purchase and I couldn't be happier !!!

I bought my 1025r in June 2016. I own just under 2 acres and have a small backyard homestead. I won't lie, I had serious buyers remorse right after buying mine. But, once I started using it and doing projects around the house the remorse quickly went away. Despite the price, it is the best outdoor DIY piece of equipment I have ever bought. The drive over deck and quick attach loader are money. I can do lots of things with it. Only thing I would do over is give more consideration to the backhoe when I purchased. I still may not buy it, but I didn't even consider it when I bought.

Another informative video. One thing I would stress is visit multiple dealers even if the are ultimately under the same umbrella. I went to 3 different dealers when looking for our 1025R all under the same parent company and all 3 had significantly different pricing/offers- They varied by almost $4k. Shopping around is super important.

Great comments on storage. I did not have room either for my first tractor and parked outside for years. Absolutely ruined the looks of it, bleached out plastic parts, very hard on it. I traded once I had a good storage solution.

My Johnny 855 is a 1991 model and I never have had problems ordering parts for it. The tractor has maintained and improved our 21 acres for almost 30 years with never a trip to the dealership. It's as strong today as the day I brought it home. It's has no seeping and the tractor stops as soon as I take my foot of the direction pedals. It's the best machine of any kind I have bought in my life. It's important to change oil, I change mine and the filter at the beginning of every mowing season even if the oil doesn't look dirty. I tried using citgo oil one time instead of Deere oil and the tractor lost power, with small engines you can tell power loss immediately. I have been using Deere oil ever since and have no plans on changing no matter the price. Good episode Tim. Good Luck with your new Deere Nolan.

Never heard you mention maneuverability like using in enclosed spaces such as corrals or fenced yard which is very important

Just took delivery of a new 1025R John Deere, several differences I liked on the Deere over the Kubota, especially the twin touch pedals. To me the Deere is just easier to operate than the treadle pedal on the Kubota. It is an awesome tractor.

A grapple w a tree trunk or stump in it gets real heavy real kwik, keep that in mind if you are going to do much clearing or cleanup. Also gets very dangerous when you are trying to pile up to burn and have to lift it up on top of the pile and it is not very level. On a tractor that can barely handle it in a paved parking lot you can get in a mess real kwik.

I just bought a 1025R and own a 1-acre lot. It's not too much for the acre lot! So many options and with a fork set up, you will find ways to use your tractor!

Top options to consider are cab VS open, loader, quick hitch, tire solution, 3rd function on front and hydraulic hose sets on rear for attatchments.

Just ordered new 2038R yesterday, with loader, backhoe and belly mower. I shopped multiple locations, and multiple brands.First I shopped Kubota, and very much enjoyed the dealership. It was very friendly, had lots of equipment, and the pricing was competitive. However, at the end of the day I felt their competition to the 2038R wasn't close. I checked out Kioti, but the dealership is only open 6 or 7 months out of the year. The bobcat brand looked nice, but I wan'ted something I could get parts and service for the life of the tractor. I also shopped at several different deere dealerships, some even being the same company but different locations. I had varying experiences at each, with their largest Ag-Pro facility being difficult to get help. I suppose this might be because of the season, or that walk in customers don't yield profits like large farmers generate. I shopped Bridgeport equipment, and ultimately they had several locations, and each was helpful and amazing. Their pricing was $4,000 cheaper than Ag-Pro, so that was the determining final result. It was amazing how complex, and confusing all the choices can be. It was way more complicated then purchasing a truck, almost as complex as buying a house. Thanks for the excellent Videos, they have been invaluable in the decision making process.

Accessories that I strongly suggest everyone consider (aftermarket or OEM): Skid-steer quick-attach (SSQA) bracket for the loader (many come with it standard, but sometimes it’s still optional). Bucket hooks to attach rope & chain to. Forks (either clamp on or SSQA; but the clamp-on style, although cheaper, does have less effective capacity due to sticking out further from the pivot point of the loader). I got mine on sale from palletforks.com; but there are other sources as well. ROPS-mount canopy. Even if you like hot weather, or live in a more northern are where it just doesn’t get that hot; it’s both good for reducing your UV exposure as well as a place to mount stuff, such as... 12v roof-mount fan. These are available from trucking supply stores, as well as Amazon and eBay; and really help on hot days. Backup camera, aimed to show both the rear implement and what’s behind you. These are available as pre-configured kits; but you can also get a camera module and LCD module from Amazon or eBay (if you can hook up a Nintendo, you can hook one of these up). Mirrors. I got a set marketed for golf carts; and made a set of brackets to mount them to the loader frame posts; but there are lots of other setups that could be suitable. Walkie-talkies with an earpiece; if you ever think you might work with someone else (and you probably will, even if they’re just kicking stuff into the loader bucket or hooking & unhooking a chain around stuff, while you stay in the driver’s seat). And the other ear should have an earplug in it; diesels can get noisy when working hard. Alternatively; ISO-tunes, a cell-phone holder, and one of the walkie-talkie apps for your phones. Long-reach grabber tool... so you don’t have to climb off the tractor to move something like a hose or other small object. To hold this when it’s not in active use, either attach a “cup” magnet to it; or get a wall-mount broom holder, and attach the magnet to that, and clip the long-reach tool into the broom-holder. I put mine on the inside of the loader frame’s vertical posts... out of the way, but in reach when I need it. Step: there’s a guy (at retailrems.com/ ) who makes a bolt-on step for the GC1700 series; John over at Louisiana Tractorworks & Projects did a video a couple of weeks ago about it, so I ordered one. BIG help for somebody with a bad back (like, um... me). I don’t know what’s available for other brands; or if you’d have to go DIY on one. Also makes one a lot less prone to grabbing the steering wheel when climbing up. Battery-powered fuel transfer pump... because holding up a 5gal can of diesel fuel is a pain in the neck (and shoulder, and... well, you get the idea).

Hi Tim, yes you need to include the Massey GC series on here. I don't know how it is in the States, but in Canada they have a lot of dealers and they are an old company and very well supported. They all come with the SSQA option, so that rules out any implement issues with getting things like a set of pallet forks, grapple, or things like that. I would also highly recommend to get the pallet forks at the time of purchase as that greatly makes the tractor more useful for moving stuff around. It will change how you store your items, and what to do with things.

Tim, My son just went thru this with some help from me. We compared JD 1023, 1025, and Bx2380 all with bucket, 60" mower, and ballast box. JD has compare tool on their site. Very helpful but had BX2370 only available. I told him to watch your videos, which he did. Biggest differences was axle capacities were considerably higher for orange, and fuel consumption considerably less with orange. The lift arm hydraulic control is better on JD, but he is not going to be using attachments much. So, after meeting both dealers and testing all three, it came down to the price. JD offered $250 more for his trade in than Kubota. His new BX2380 will be delivered Monday.

Massey Ferguson is also a great brand that has been around a long time. I have a GC1705 (now I would get the GC1725M) and it is great!

Nolan; I have had a John Deere 1023E on 2acr's have done many jobs with that tractor Tilling 3/4 acre garden ripping up old posts & roots, stoning pads for my drive in port pads for my barn & shop...etc.-etc. I love the John Deere equipment and also own a 300X rider. Tim is a stand-up guy and I always watch his videos. This is coming for a 74-year old that has been around the block or two. Lol

Tim I 100% agree with what you said about sizing a tractor. I worked in excavation for years and thought I needed a 2 series Deere or B series Kubota for work around the house (1.5 acres). I ended up stumbling onto an excellent deal for a bx with a bunch of attachments and was amazed by it’s capabilities. Yes, they have limits 😁. Moral of my story, don’t underestimate the power or capability of the smaller tractors which may free up cash for more implements.

Or Maybe even a video that describes the “daily checks” or grease schedule. Helping me answer what I should be doing everyone I want to use the tractor and put it away.

Tim. I have been in the market for a new tractor now for about a year or so. I have found your videos extremely helpful and you have encouraged me to do more and more research. I think my wife and I are almost ready to finally bite the bullet. Although I do agree that green tractors may be superior, being that I currently own one and green up with them I think we are leaning towards a different colour this time. But that won't stop me from watching your videos

I have a JD 3032e bought as the package deal, front loader, brush hog, and box blade in 2015. I traded the box blade for pallet forks and later bought a used blade. I had the dealership put 500 # each of fluid in the rear tires. A lot of the reviews I read before the purchase was that JD utility tractors were light in the rear and it limited what or how much the bucket / forks could lift. The only thing I have added was a 3 point quick connect. This tractor is a beast and has not failed at anything I have asked of it. I have a barn I kept it in but decided to buy an 8' legs, metal carport for it. They are not that expensive and well worth it, it was up in 2 hours.

I was in the same boat. I had an X590 on order then after much thought I cancelled it and went with a 1025R. Very happy with my decision despite the immense increase in price.

Mine wintered over under some tarps & a harbor-freight 10x20 car cover open-side “tent”. However, a steel building is going to be installed for it just as soon as I get the foundation for it in place.

I have a Massey go 1710 and it is wonderful it has done jobs that I never thought it would the power is amazing and Massey has been around long b4 kobota and out preforms it

First time watching your channel. I learned quite a lot about tractor choices. I’ve owned a John Deere 2305 for 16 years and it has served us well. Very few maintenance issues. My local John Deere dealership is only 4 miles from my home and they have a robust parts department and superior service department. Good information. I’ll be sure to continue watching your channel.

Pretty hard to find "competing" JD dealers within a reasonable distance. JD dealers within 50 miles of me are all owned by the same ownership. JD has encouraged large multi location dealers.

Hey Tim wanted to say thank you. I've been considering a tractor purchase for the last 4 months. I've spent hours watching your videos and videos of other people to aid in my decision. The tractors that I was considering were the JD 1025R, Kubota BX23S and the RK 24 series. These are the ones that are available close to my home area. Today I made the final choice and went to see my Deere dealer. Just finished ordering a 1025R, quick coupler, 120R Loader, 260B Backhoe, 60-inch deck and 4 ft tiller. Watching how it performed on your videos and comparing videos of the other tractors it just seemed like the best choice. I especially didn't like the Kubota pedal system when I went and sat in the tractors. Just wanted to say thank you for providing very useful videos for novices like myself to better understand what we are getting into.

Great episode. You always have the best videos Tim. But a trailer should be discussed especially if you will help others and where are you going to park it? And before that do you have a vehicle that can pull a trailer. My opinion is a loader is an absolute must on a tractor. I always recommend same brand loader as the tractor. Consider a belly mower of the same brand also. Then a box blade (also offsets the loader weight). I used the loader and box blade more than anything else. You will quickly find a tiller is a must. Those items don’t have to be the same brand as the tractor. Considering the horrible cost of the backhoe, and the amount you will use it, I’d wait and just rent if you ever actually needed one. Consider there is always one more attachment you will want for as long as you own the tractor. Allow for it. I never regretted the tractor or any of the attachments I purchased as I could do most anything and found things to do that otherwise I would not have even considered doing.

That cat was hilarious! If your guest wants to look into Kubota, Messicks has a ton of videos on here all about everything Kubota. Neil also talks about a lot of stuff that applies no matter which brand you have. Good Works Tractors is another great channel for folks wanting more info. He'll get both perspectives- the owner's from you; and a dealer's from them. But, yeah, the importance of finding a GOOD dealer, as well as good service and a good parts network can't be overstated. I'm glad you pointed out the build your own tool on Deere and Kubota's websites- helpful not only for walking you through the options, but for seeing how they affect the price!

The best part of owning a family tractor is being a little creative to get jobs done. Yesterday I used a pair of clamping bucket forks, spaced close together, to pull some trees out of our sandy soil, roots and all.

By shopping around at Tim's Candy Store, your head may swell a little as to what you need. But it is a great place to look. I have 1 acre also and the tractor is big but I wanted a loader to be my shovel and wheel barrow. Don't think too much about new projects but think of all the old ones and how the Tractor could have helped. Looking forward to the next video at the test track.

Kioti 2510 would be a perfect tractor for Nolan's situation. I think going to multiple dealers of multiple brands would be beneficial. He needs to figure out what he is going to be doing and look at models in that class. In the end green, blue, red or orange, it's what the buyer likes.

Very valid points. Having a 1025 myself I’ve had the chance to get into several projects like yourselves. It’s a very capable machine but it has limitations. Another great comparison I have kicked around is a Vermeer skid steer... rubber tracked a bit more stable on hills and for grooming beech volleyball 🏐 courts. 💯 agreed any machine is only as capable as the additional attachments. My opinion is there is a sacrifice to a multifunctional machine, I would not order a backhoe for my purposes I would rent a machine designed for the task. I ordered my 1025 with 3rd valve up front and a hydraulic top link and tilt cylinder on 3 point hitch. I have a box blade that we cut the sides down on so it will scrape better & added a 4 in one bucket @5’ wide just before they started offering 4’ model I welded excavator teeth on this bucket ( comes to about same price as a tooth bar). A tiller and York rake are two attachments I need to invest in. As you may suspect my hydraulic pump is maxed out, functions are jumpy or slow to respond because of where the flow is needed or from the fact it’s a sub compact that is highly capable but has limitations. I would like to see if Vermeer1000 model using a land plane, box blade, tiller demo bucket and York rake if it would be a smoother than a sub compact machine.... I say this because the foot print is similar as is lifting capacity, I wonder if the hydraulic system and pump is built a bit more robust to handle a different style of punishment? Any knowledge you or your channel base have on these machines and their attachments may help with new property owners. I think the Vermeer would have been a better fit. I love my 1025, didn’t know the longevity of the mini skid steers and bottom line is they cost more.

yes absolutely on multiple different dealers. a buddy of mines parents was looking for a new ztr a week ago 2 dealers under the same name, multiple locations the first was 11300 and would do 11,000 to the SE of them. the second dealer same model 11,300 would do 9200 to the NW of them. these were within 50 miles of each other

This is my two cents. If money isn’t an option buy what you want. If money is part of your decision making process I don’t see a $20k tractor as making sense on 1 acre. Look at something used to save a few bucks or look at some other manufacturers. Myself personally I own and RK24 with loader, backhoe, 4’ tiller, 4’ rotary cutter and a 6’ cultipacker all purchased at the same time from my local Rural King. Same Yanmar motor as the more expensive models. I have planted 66 trees, removed stumps, moved 304 gravel over my 300’ driveway and opened up 1.5 acres to expand my food plots with zero issues. My tractor with all attachments and delivered to my property by the dealer was an extreme money savings for me. People will talk about long term service and part availability and I guess I will have to see if that will be true. But at the end of the day I have a lot more green in my pocket than on my tractor. I have a 2 acre lot of which only 1 is used and I have a JD4320. Way to big and I love it. Sometimes need is relative to happiness.

Tim, I have a kubota bx 23 with the bt600 backhoe. The main return hydraulic line from the backhoe to the tractor is discontinued....had to get one made locally. It works perfectly and actually cost less than if I bought an original part from Kubota. So just an FYI to let everyone know that Kubota doesn't always keep up with parts for older tractors.

I compared 4 John Deere dealership before I bought my 1025r. Their was a $1850 price difference between them. By all means shop different dealership!

Useful and practical comment not to judge a dealership by the sales person, talk to the service and also the parts department!

Insightful and I feel honest responses to his questions. It’s crazy how people buy a brand , the biggest or most power only to find out it doesn’t do what they need or spent to much. Always make a list of tasks or realistic future tasks, then look for the model that fits. TV, car, boat, computer, it doesn’t matter. Really great insight on ok where do I park it now that I have it.

Another thing I recommend is don't be doing your research, question asking, etc. on the same day you are buying. That is the fastest way to get upsold. Do all your research ahead of time, and when you decide to buy, go to the dealer knowing exactly what you want, and tell them exactly what you are looking to buy.

Tractor Time with Tim About a 3 weeks ago I talked to 2 John Deere Dealers - 12 Grand for 1025R and 3 Grand for loader. If you wanted a 2025R They said they are 2 Grand more. ( Southern Wisconsin )

The 1023e can have some really good deals that the 1025r doesn't as well. I got my 1023e with 0% for 84 months and a $500 rebate and at the time the the 1025R was only 60 months with no rebate, so sometimes the slightly different models can have pretty good deals.

Good day Tim and Christy. Well I finally decided to post my first comment after years of watching. I have watched most of your videos more than once, even before lockdown and really enjoyed watching you guys grow. Your channel is my number one go to guide if I want to get some info. A lot of the time just watching the videos and seeing how implements and machines perform in certain situations are very informative and helps me make a decision. My wife and I both grew up on a farm but for now we are city folk until we can move out to the country. I am used to much bigger machines but started doing contracting jobs here in and around Perth, Australia a couple of years ago so your channel has been great. I upgraded last week from a Massey GC series to a 3 Series John Deere. I would definitely also include the Massey as a contender. The hydrolics on it and the engine is fantastic. Mine did 2700 hours with very little issues. I do miss the little massey but super happy with my Johnny. You are 100% correct regarding not to limit yourself in buying a bigger tractor instead of more implements. Thanks for the great videos. I know a lot of time and effort goes into making then.
