If you’ve got sensitive skin, you know that everything you put next to it matters -- especially your sheets and bedding. We’ll show you how to pick soft, non-irritating bedding that can guarantee you a great night’s sleep/
This level of customized service is especially important when dealing with allergies or sensitive skin. For these individuals, choosing the right bed sheets is absolutely essential to getting a good night's sleep. If you have eczema, allergies or any skin irritation, the right bedding can help keep both you and your skin healthy.
At Fine Linen and Bath, we suggest that people with sensitive skin choose bedding made with breathable natural fibers. This means silk, cotton, bamboo or linen, as opposed to rayon, polyester or other man-made fabrics.
Most natural fibers are plant or protein based. Natural fibers are more breathable, more durable, and more environmentally friendly than their synthetic counterparts.
Depending on the type and weave, natural fibers can also be more absorbent, like cotton fabric, or help your skin retain its natural moisture, like silk.
On the other hand, synthetic fibers like polyester are man-made using chemical processes. This makes them more likely to both cause irritation and aggravating existing conditions like eczema.
Of course, you can develop a sensitivity to any fabric or even the dye used to color them. Nonetheless, cotton and silk fibers are inherently better for people with common skin conditions or sensitive skin such as babies or children.
First let’s look at cotton.
Cotton is a natural fiber so it makes for inherently hypoallergenic sheets. Tightly woven cotton is also an excellent barrier against dust mites, which are a common source of allergy and irritation. Finally, cotton sheets are soft, which minimizes friction against skin.
Cotton sheets are quite simple to care for. They can be easily and frequently machine washed, which helps them grow softer and more comfortable and quickly removes any allergens. Some buyers like to take the additional step of buying organic cotton sheets. The cotton for these is grown and then woven without pesticides or chemicals.
But not all cotton sheets are the same. A high quality cotton sheet will just feel better against the skin. One measure of sheet quality is thread count. High thread count cotton sheets are typically softer and the denser weave is more resistant to dust mites.
The quality of the cotton itself is also important. Long staple or extra-long staple cotton are the best. Most cotton fabric is made from fiber only about an inch long. It is weak and rough to begin with. It also pills easily which is harsh on skin.
Long- and extra-long staple cotton sheets are different. They’re stronger and softer to begin with. And they get softer and more comfortable with repeated washings over time. To find long and extra long staple cotton sheets, look for those labeled Pima or Supima, which is American cotton, or Giza, which is Egyptian cotton grown near the Nile.
Silk is another great option for sensitive skin. And provides a multitude of benefits for people with sensitive skin. Silk is a protein-based fabric. It’s naturally moisturizing to skin and hair. Our charmeuse from Mulberry Park Silks is incredibly smooth. This reduces friction on delicate facial skin and fights sleep wrinkles.
Silk is also naturally hypoallergenic and non-irritating. Silk sheets and pillowcases are gentle on the most sensitive and even acne-prone skin while being inherently resistant to mold, mites, and other allergens.
Along with feeling fabulous against your skin, the Mulberry Park Silks sheets we sell are breathable and regulate body temperature.
In warmer weather silk wicks away moisture to keep skin cool and dry. In cooler temperatures, the silk fiber creates a thin layer of insulation to keep you warm. This protects your skin from temperature extremes.
And Mulberry Park Silks goes a step further with their fabric. Every item they make is independently certified to be free from any harmful chemicals, toxins and irritants. Mulberry Park Silks sheets are safe, natural, and healthy. They’re ideal for even the most delicate and sensitive skin.
Silks sheets are also easy to care for. They can be washed right in your machine using a detergent formulated for silk.
Buying high-quality cotton or silk bed sheets is an investment. But with proper care, your sheets will last a long time. The Fine Linen and Bath team is available to offer individual guidance and recommendations. We can help you choose luxurious sheets that keep your skin feeling healthy and looking good. We’ll even send you complementary swatch samples to review at home.
