It's the 15th July, and we're starting at Leeds to catch the only train of the day that goes to Haysham Port, to meet up with the Isle of Man boat. We also meet Ian the 'Selfie King', and have a Brief Encounter at Carnforth station too...
'RP' is Recieved Pronunciation. It's a very posh sounding English accent! en.wikipedia.o...
Download the All The Stations theme tune from iTunes here: itunes.apple.c... (other stores are available....)
Geoff and Vicki are visiting ALL 2,563 national railway stations in Britain - view the progress map and loads more information about the project on the website at: allthestations....
ROUTE: Leeds, Lancaster, Morecambe, Heysham Port, Lancaster, Preston, Oxenholm Lake District, Windemere

The Canal under Leeds is actually the River Aire however if you followed the river about 100 yards down stream you'd come across the end of the Leeds Liverpool Canal.

Vicki's announcement sounded so much like the official automated system I'm now thinking she moonlights as the announcements lady for Network Rail!
@uwlodar
@uwlodar 7 лет назад
there are several different automated announcement voices on the network. The most common I believe is called "Anne", who does the announcements at stations like Kings Cross and sounds really posh. Theres also the South West Trains automated announcement lady who's even more posh.
@Vayatir
@Vayatir 7 лет назад
South West Trains automated announcements are done by Celia Drummond, who also does the Northern Line.

Tina Onions - was a Marshall once. I was surprised too when I heard her in my student days when I regularly used Leeds station to get to and from University. I think it's mainly the stations directly managed by Network Rail that use her voice.

TRiG (Ireland) In France, they also have a pre-announcement "jingle" which has changed a few times over the years, the current one someone made into a proper song and tried to release it as a single!! I don't know how successful it was...???

Well done Vicki for the station announcement; it sounded appropriately professional. We spent a week on the Isle of Man; It's got lots of railways and everso nearly did All The IoM stations - managed the Steam Railway, Electric Tram, Mountain Railway, Horse Tram, Laxey Mines Railway & Groudle Glen Railway. Sadly we couldn't get to the Crogga Valley or the Curraghs Wildlife Park, both minature. You'll have to go.

Gosh the Dark Arches in Leeds has gone up in the world a bit! When I was a lad, those tunnels under the station, with the River Aire running underneath, were not the place you'd want to venture even during the day, let alone at night. When I was last there, last year, they didn't have the multi-coloured lighting, and the south entrance hadn't quite opened.
@ianmcclavin

Enjoyed the "Brief Encounter" tribute!! Those Pendolinos rushing around in the black and white footage made me really laugh as well!! I've been to the Isle of Man a few times, most recently last year. Well worth a visit, especially if you haven't been before. Yes, they have their own money, but UK English and Scottish notes and coins are also accepted everywhere on the island. Just don't bring any island notes or coinage back with you (other than as a souvenir) as you won't be able to spend them here!!

All so terribly, terribly touching dear boy - Mad dogs and Englishmen and all that sort of rot, wot! I see a great future for Ms Celia Pipe on that new-fangled Interweb film service thingy (we've seen the acting and dancing - can she sing?), but not sure about the Chap - bit wooden, perhaps? The new entrance is locally known as 'Dark Arches' and both canal (Leed/Liverpool) and River Aire. Was concepted back in the station rebuild of 1999 but kicked into long grass it finally only came to fruition in recent years opening in 2015. And ohhh Vickey did the 'tourist' mistake with Keighley saying 'Keeley' instead of 'Keith-ley' - there's a lot more of them abound in this West Yorkshire when you return Fact about the Heysham service from Leeds - it's only since 2004 that Leeds gained a direct service to Heysham, when Northern did a network retime and resource combination. Previous a separate Heysham service followed the service from Leeds into Morecambe etc and the rest is history..Mind It took a while to get Heysham in to the auto announce!

Carnforth isn't quite the same now the West Coast Mainline trains go through without stopping and their platforms have been largely removed. My favorite fact about the film: It was supposedly set in London, but someone forgot to change the destination boards in the background of the shots, so the next train was leaving for Barrow-In-Furness; not likely from London!
@stephenduncan3605

There used to be direct trains from London to Barrow in Furness as I used to regularly travel on them as a young child in the early to mid 1980s.

Vicki, if you ever do an "All the Castles", Skipton Castle is well worth a visit. They give visitors an A3 sheet of paper with diagrams of each room and the exit by which you should leave to get to the next room. This is to enforce a sort of one-way system. And there's an ancient yew tree with very gnarled bark in the centre of the courtyard where you can pretend to be Anneka Rice searching for the final clue on Treasure Hunt, which IIRC was hidden in that tree. And Geoff gets to play Graham the Cameraman, following you and getting sneaky shots of your bottom :-)

Your right about Leeds it is very functional but not very glamorous, could never understand why they use a pacer to Morecambe, they use a 2 or 3 carriage train to Carlisle, they used to use, what I call a compartment train, 6 seats to a compartment, its such a shame that these trains are no longer running, As always guys another great video Ps Ian (also my name 😁) is a legend

My dad once took my family to Carnforth in search of Steam World. We were told we were twelve years late! He had a really old flyer. "Faux-friendly rivalry"? I think you mean "battle to the death"! After all, Lancashire had to import its textile raw material (cotton) from distant places like India and the USA, whereas Yorkshire grew its raw material (wool) on the backs of sheep in the neighbourhood. Not many people know that different towns in the West Riding produced different types of woollen cloth: Huddersfield has the carpets, many towns have woollen mills, Leeds has the worsted mills, spinning the fine yarn and weaving it into cloth for suits. And Batley, Morley, Dewsbury and Ossett have the shoddy and mungo mills, ripping up old cloth and making new wool from the fibres; my grandparents' house in Ossett backed onto a shoddy mill and I can remember when I used to stay there was a distant moaning noise from the machinery, all night long. Sadly about the only place to see the machinery in action nowadays is in the Armley Mills (Leeds) and the Bradford industrial museums.

Geoff/Vicki: If you're passing through Shipley again (eg to do the line to Bradford Forster Square) you might like to mention that it's one of only two stations in the UK (the other is Earlsfield in Merseyside) that is triangular, with trains calling at all three sides. Ambergate in Derbyshire used to be like this but only one side is still used, and Queensbury west of Bradford used to be a magnificent example but it was closed (and most traces demolished) in the 1950s. Shipley used to be V-shaped (no platforms on the Leeds-Skipton side of the triangle) until the 1990s when platforms were built on that side. The only thing that prevents it being a "perfect triangle" (like Queensbury was) is that the Bradford-Skipton side has only one platform rather than two; the line on that side was singled at some stage in the past. You could indulge in the Shipley Sprint from the Leeds-Skipton platforms, across the car park, through the subway and up to the Leeds-Bradford or Bradford-Skipton platforms - been there, done that! It's a longer way than it looks!
