This is one I've built before, and am just about to begin again! - I love this kit, as for a beginner like me the simplicity of the instructions and relative easy-going-together parts on the sprue make it a joy to build. Thanks for making this review, we all appreciate it 😄
Nice to hear the word transfers! I remember I used to always call them that when I was a kid way back in the seventies. I must admit to my shame I know say decals, as in deck als. I've ended up with two of these starter kits. I raided Aldi myself before Christmas and bought all the aircraft, then got some more as a present thanks to the baby Jesus! I'm looking forward to building some after I've stopped stressing out trying to do the rigging on my Revell HMS Bounty.
Paint is made in UK, kit is moulded in India hence the box's dual nationality. I too acquired one from Aldi where I had a choice of Spitfire or Spitfire... In my opinion, the Gift Set Hurricane A55111A is by far better value and a nicer kit.
There’s one of these hanging over my pond. There’s also a Hurricane, a Dambusters Lancaster (with added solar lights,) an X-Wing fighter ( in matching RAF camo) and a snowspeeder. Will be adding a Harrier and the Millennium Falcon once the weather improves.
So at the age of 45 I've decided to give model building a go, I've bought this kit but I've got some art experience so have bought some primer and bought some different but same make paints in a set I got today in a sale the Humbrol WW2 RAF colour set bargain at £12.45 Now I'm under no illusion that may be over the top for my first ever model but I figure go big or go home 🤣 I've also bought the Tornado F3 and bought some decals for the squadron I actually served on, as it was half price on the airfix sale too Just waiting on the humbrol WW2 RAF colour set to arrive that I got for £12.45 today online and the primer oh and putty , then I'll get to it 👍🙂 I've been watching a lot of builders videos this week and thoroughly enjoyed the tips and techniques I look forward to seeing more of your content
@@ModelMinutes I'm looking up brush painting techniques at the moment as everything seems to be for airbrush so I'm hoping the humbrol drop bottles and tamiya paints I've bought can be brushed on too 🤣
@@ANDREWHALL28 You definitely can brush those paints on - i've done it many times! You'll need some Tamiya thinner for the tamiya acrylics though, because they are alcohol based and water doesn't really cut it. I'd recommend that you look back through my channel at some of my builds where I hand paint them, particularly: Airfix Spitfire: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jNPowklg1Sk.html Airfix Hurricane: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YLQ4MxoYd1k.html A general discussion on paints: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WO0SZ1sGGcs.html&t
I’m really liking the the new AIRFIX tooling… I bought the Me 109 kit just recently, good price… I will look for this kit now that you did this REVIEW… has a lot of potential for more details ( if a model builder wants ), I still use ENAMELS to paint, GOOD REVIEW… Thanks for putting this together… CHRIS from OHIO 🇺🇸
THIS IS A REBOOT OF THE AURORA 1960 SPITFIRE THAT WAS A METALLIC BLUE BUT SCALE DOWN FROM 1/48 TO 1/72.BUILD A LOT OF THE AURORA MODELS AS A KID .,THEY WERE CHEAP TAKE CARE
I totally agree with you Sir. This aircraft is a legend, and starting a modeler life with a 1/72 Spitfire build is often an starting dream. I started mine with a Matchbox Spitfire MkIX more than fourty years ago. Still in my mind, a real child happiness that never passed. Now when I open a Airfix 72nd scale Spitfire kit box, it's still a enchantment ! And yes this Spit kit is easy, simple to build and makes a nice scale replica of the iconic WWII fighter. But I really hope Airfix brand will soon produce us new Spitfires mkI, mkII, MKVb to the quality standard of current productions. 🇨🇵🤝🏻🇬🇧
Built this about a year ago - the first plane I built since 1999 and the first WW2 fighter since childhood! And it was a nice simple reintroduction to building aircraft again.
great unboxing as usual my paints for this kit where all great but i know these mini pots of paint can be hit and miss i enjoyed my build and it took me back to the simple nice easy airfix builds of my youth really looking forward for your build of this kit as i know you will do a fantastic job of it these cheap starter/gift sets should be sold more in my view to get more people into the hobby keep up the good work pal
The only thing you need to do with the paints is either add some thinners Humberol or Tamiya or just water. If you add water though better to add either drinking bottled water or the water you top up car batteries with. I've thinned the little pots even when they had the consistency of dry snot . I've thinned them and put them through my airbrush no problem.
Hi mate second comment I've made on your channel. Concerning the crusty paint that you get in airfix kits and revell kits that have been hanging around on shelves and have gone crusty over the years. 1. Invest in 1l of IPA isopropyl from eBay and some cheep plastic pipettes. 2. Mix 1 part of IPA with 1 part of water. 3. Mix the IPA and water volume with the same amount of crusty paint . 4. Then paint or even air brush the revived paint over the suitably primed model. 5. Then decant paint into a empty small Vallejo style squirty container (you can buy them on eBay) you will have enough paint for 4 models . Now make a video on how to revive crusty airfix and revell Paint. Hope you didn't mind me suggesting a video that would be interesting to the modelling community. Keep up the good work.
Very nice kit for what you are paying for! Wonder why Airfix didn’t make this a starter set, but instead made it a gift set? Looks more like a start set to me!
it used to be classed as a "starter set" but it was never designed specifically to be one - especially seeing as the exact same tooling can be found as a "Classic" kit in the range too. Now Airfix are in the process of introducing specific starter set ranges which are designed to be easier to construct with fewer parts (Spitfire Vc, Lightning II, various cars etc) which means any non-starter set model that comes with paints is reclassified as a gift set
This kit isn't really for me, I prefer to spend months on a single build with lots of detail plus since I airbrush the panel lines are an issue and just the general slight chunkiness that airfix tends to have. That being said I agree with your assessment and it does its job. I also agree with you on the production of this kit. I'm fairly confident that its up there with the most produced toolings of this century
I really like this set and seems pretty easy for me as new to the hobby, but the problem is that I live in Croatia and I can't find Arfix anywhere. I only have Revell. I may order that one online.
My first ever kit when I started was a Spitfire but obviously not this particular kit since I've been modelling since I was 8 (now 51). I built the much earlier kit. Cannot remember how many I built (and lost) over the years, in fact there are 3 still hanging from my bedroom ceiling lol and they're pretty old now
i have built this kit 6 time's once as the 2 bladed 19 squadron scheme, 3 time's in the 610 squadron at raf biggin hill at the height of the battle of britain in july-august of 1940 and 2 time's in the 92 squadron scheme at raf manston my local airfield in december of 1940 it goes together really providing you test and dry fit the parts first as i have noticed that the tolerance's on the more modern airfix release's are quite tight
Yes, I built one of these when they first came out, not as a gift set, although same markings, painted with Model Master acrylics, (damn shame, Model Master is no more, F U Rustoleum/RPM) panel lines are fine by me, yes, they are deeper and wider than some, so just don't accent them. The kit decals worked great, (not cartograph, afaik) with microset and sol. I'm happy with it on my shelf, heck, I like it better than my Tamiya Mk.V, to be honest.
PS, The kit I built, not being a starter set with paint, came with a more extensive decal sheet, with stencils, and the red patches over the gun ports, who knows what else, this was a couple years ago.
Hi! I am just about to start building my first model, and I am wondering which masking tape did you use in your videos, well not this one, but some older videos, and I love that Airfix kit.
I just finished a Spitfire 1a 2-3 months ago. It was the regular kit, so the decals had a lot of stencils. The build is great, rather would have had a open cockpit canopy instead of closed. I first started to try MissionModels paint, but that was a disaster since I didnt buy the polyurethane additive. Second coat would dissolve the first coat....ugh. Had to strip it and switch to Vallejo paint. Its a good model with lots of detail.
i've built two spitfire mk.1a's, 2012 BQ J and the DW K edit: i decided to buy another 2 spitfires (U GR) and build them, need suggestions for what air force to do for the second spitfire
Well, I think the original 1950s Airfix spitfire was, but there have been a number of completely new toolings since then with this being the most recent version
nope. Many companies removed them from older kits and didn't design them into the tooling of new kits as a cost saving method. Whilst there are still some kits out there which do indeed have stands, the argument was that many modellers don't display them on stands anymore and thus it is a waste to include them in the kit when that plastic (and cost) could be saved
Leave the lid off for a while to let some of the moisture evaporate? I don’t really have a problem with a paint being too wet, usually it’s the other way round
@@ModelMinutes I will , just haven't decided if I want to do it as the scheme in box or do it as a what-if polish export version since that was actually a plan(the spitfire didnt reach poland in time), what do you think?
Airfix realy need to go back to the lippy type ! The new pots are pure frustration to open one spilled on my shirt after the lid flew open when I opened the bloody thing 😑
Removed paints from what? If you are talking about the stand alone kit range from Airfix, they have never come with paints etc, only starter sets and gift sets come with those extras
