So, you’re having a panic attack?
If you’re right in the middle of a panic attack, this video is for you. For many people, a panic attack feels like a lot of intense physical symptoms. Maybe your heart is pounding, you feel faint or tingly, you’re afraid that you’re going to pass out or have a heart attack. In this video we’ll walk you through how to know if it’s anxiety causing those symptoms and some practical steps to stop the panic cycle. Because you’re going to be ok. You are safe.
These sensations feel scary but they’re not going to hurt you.
First let’s try this experiment- does moving around make it better or worse? If walking around makes you feel a little better, that’s one indicator that this is anxiety, not a physical condition. Panic Attacks are the physical sensations of the FFF response going into overdrive, not a heart attack. Panic attacks are caused by being afraid of the FFF symptoms.
These symptoms feel really uncomfortable, they feel really scary, but Anxiety and panic won’t harm you- they usually resolve within 5-10 minutes. And by dropping the struggle against them, you may be able to help them resolve faster. Now there are two approaches to dealing with anxiety attacks and panic attacks, this one is the “Roll with it” method and the other one is the calm down method- after watching this video, check out my other video to try the other technique too and see which one works for your situation.
The real problem is not the anxiety or the sensations, - it’s the belief that they are dangerous- So if you’re struggling to calm your body down, you might think “I can’t feel this way. I have to breathe slower, I Have to calm down”- you’re essentially telling your brain that these feelings are dangerous. This heightens the anxiety cycle.
Let’s stop the cycle of panic attacks by showing your brain that anxiety is not dangerous, you can feel anxiety and still be 100% safe.
So say this:
“This is uncomfortable but not dangerous.”
“Even though this is uncomfortable, I am safe.”
Say “I can handle feeling this” “this will pass” Emotions and sensations come and go like waves, this will too.”

I had panic attacks out of the blue for months. They were horrible ; extreme fear, dizziness, nausea, not wanting people around yet not being left alone. Decided to go through a battery of medical test to rule out heart problems, etc. Finally was diagnosed with a chemical imbalance. With some patience of medication side effects, the doctors found the correct regimen for me. Since then I function like I did before the attacks began. My only problem is when I try to alter my meds. I still do the techniques I learned in case I feel one coming, but luckily with the proper medication they are much fewer. They don’t alter my life. I’m in control.

I worked for many years in healthcare, in both a general hospital with a locked psychiatric unit and an emergency department and in a state psychiatric facility. I was frequently called to respond to patients who were in elevated emotional states like this. My go-to methods for interrupting panic were two: - Give them a cup of cold water with a straw; or - Get them talking about something that they felt good about. As best I can tell, both approaches require that the person regulate their breathing without focusing on regulating their breathing. The first one worked more quickly than the second, and the second one (when I could get them talking) seemed to establish a more lasting change. I wish I'd realized that before, because I probably would have combined them.

This is probably the best video on panic attacks out there. Just today I was out walking my dog and started to feel anxious, my breathing got faster and thoughts became rapid too regarding I'm going to feel like I cannot escape, what if I get sick and I am not at home etc. Then I started to walk towards my home and my thoughts of panic intensified. I felt really crap like I am going to feel like I cannot escape. And then, my brave part said to me: You can do it, you can walk home calmly and it's going to be okay. In that moment, even more panic came over me. I realised to keep telling myself that it's okay is extremely unhelpful as I am totally gaslighting the part of me that feels terrible. So I said to myself: I really feel terrible right now and it sucks but I am going to make it home. And I stayed with the terrible panicky feeling and in a few seconds it dissolved. I tried this technique several time. It's very hard as leaning into the panic feels like the last thing you want to do but it's the only thing that has worked so far. And it makes sense as I got into this state because my little inner child never got the chance to feel authentic even if I was scared I had to be always strong as my parents would ridicule me or otherwise punish me for feeling vulnerable, fragile, sensitive, sad, upset or down so I have never felt safe with them. Now I have to create that tolerance for any uncomfortable feeling that emerges in me. I owe it to myself.

I didn’t have my first one until 25, I’m 28. You have to accept that you can’t win all of them, but when you lose a battle. Be kind to yourself. I’ve been mostly panic free for the last year, but the last two weeks I’ve been having them almost daily again, so I’m here with you. Know you’re not alone and that millions of others deal with it too. That alone helped me with some of the reclusiveness. Also, I strongly suggest you get out. Even if it’s for 5 minutes to go to a drive through and get a coffee. Don’t seclude yourself. I have a habit of that and it makes it a lot worse for me, so I have my girlfriend and friends keep me somewhat social. Even if I can only do it in a little spurt. You have to get to the point even when it’s mid panic attack you know you’re safe. I tell myself I’m not going to pass out even though it feels that way because I never have. I tell myself I’m loved by many. I also call my girlfriend, best friend or mother when it’s bad if I feel stuck at the “peak” of the episode. You’ve got this and I 100% believe in you and love you.

I have some medical problems now and they terrify me actually. I wake up with panic attacks, and this video was everything I needed. This method works 100% and having someone talks you through it is amazing. I believe that everyone who watch this video and internalize this method will overcome panic attacks. I never thought I’d actually die because of a panic attack. I can tell myself this will pass, but it took a medical doctor who diagnosed a chemical imbalance and who prescribed medication to get my life back. All the meditation, telling myself I’ll get through this, breathing techniques will help, but living with panic attacks daily is literally not living. The medications have been the key . The other techniques will help but if I have to take meds the rest of my life, like a diabetic who needs insulin, so be it.

Thank you so much for your videos, Emma. I have been struggling with nocturnal panic attacks for the last couple months. After my first panic attack, I thought I was having a heart attack, and it was one of the scariest moments of my life. I have had several nights where I've slept only one or two hours, and I it made me extremely frustrated as you can imagine. My doctor helped me by diagnosing the panic attack symptoms, but I was still struggling with sleep a lot. After watching this video (and your video on sleep anxiety), I have gone from feeling helpless and hopeless to feeling confident and empowered. When I do have a flare up, I have been practicing your "be curious" technique, and I am no longer panicking by attempting to fight off the sensations of anxiety. Now I am calling them "mini attacks" because they usually pass quickly, and I even feel peaceful immediately after the symptoms fade away. I just had another night of good sleep, and I have you to thank for it. Even when my sleep does get interrupted with an elevated heart rate or anxiety, I am able to get back to sleep quickly thanks to your techniques. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

Every night since then for the past two nights I've had a relapse in panic. As if going to sleep in my own bed was the most dangerous place my body can be in. I've been using your guides on anxiety attacks to calm myself down and get little bits of sleep. I literally had a panic attack while taking a shower and it was really annoying, I literally had to fight the urge to scream and run out of my tub like a mad person. Instead I just sat down in the tub and used the water as a calming sensation which helped enough for me to finish what I needed and go to my room, I still felt dizzy and now I’m watching this video to help me relax and your voice was so soothing, I also liked how you said “these sensations won’t hurt you.” And that calmed me a lot more. that "let's have the biggest panic attack" solved my problem with panic. I've seen psychiatrists and took medicine(alprazolam, escitalopram etc) during the early days of my panic problems i was so afraid of panic attacks, that i would start to have one.. then one day when i was lying on my bed, i felt the start of a full blown panic attack(because of overthinking of unrealistic things), out of nowhere i suddenly said "ohhh shit i would love to have this, let's go, give me that scariest panic attack", then it disappeared.:D.. Just dont be afraid of that, just embrace it. im still a nervous type but the "panic with no actual reasons" thing already went away or maybe it is still there, but i learned to trick my brain

Mine usually start because I hear about someone that has got cancer or a disease or illness then I start getting scared thinking I’ll get it blah blah blah. I think it comes from watching my mother suffer for nine years and the horrible way she died and my daughter dying in 2005. The weird part is I know I’m going to a much better place when I die wheres there’s no pain and suffering and cruelty and such it’s the process that scares the crap out of me.

They haven’t for the millions of years or so that they’ve been around, and the earth is not destroyed after the billions of years that it’s existed. That’s just coming from a place of fear. Hope your doing better and will get better trust me I know what this is like that you are going through it can feel very crippling like you don’t wanna leave your house or even your room for that matter cause I am at that point myself I feel anything I do at this point can trigger anxiety and that fear of panicking or losing my mind or anything that comes with it amplifies my fears. It’s important to note you are not alone in this struggle and I often say we “damaged” people need to stick together to help eachother get through. Give eachother advice and pointers on our journey to recovery. We can beat it. Just need to hang in there

This video has really helped me, especially reading every one else's comments, it made me realise I am not alone, all your experiences I can totally relate to, It made me so emotional but just what I needed, to cry and released all that built up tension, I only wished I had found this earlier, I have struggled with this my whole life and always thought I was the only one and I must be crazy

I am 70 and I had my first panic attack in over 4 years last night triggered by my dog getting sick and nearly dying , in the middle of the night, and me with no car (which I couldn't have driven if I tried). I live in rural Oregon, the closest vet 3 hours away. My lifelong struggle with these events, that I thought, were under control through intensive therapy, exercise and self care, are still alive and well within me. I remember now. Panic attacks are debilitating and can last for days as I was vomiting with my face against the cold tile in a complete flop sweat. It lasted all night until I passed out from exhaustion sometime this morning. You sound like Mary Poppins describing these events as "uncomfortable but they're not going to hurt you' and 'they usually only last for10 minutes." Your choice of words so minimizes what we, as sufferers, actually experience. To the point of being offensive!!!! The last panic attack I had, four years ago, lasted 2 days and put me in the hospital, totally dehydrated and depleted. After coming off of last night and after a life time of battling panic attacks, I now discover I am still prone. I went looking for some words of comfort and wisdom. Instead I found you. Your reduction of how paralyzing these episodes are... not to mention the embarrassment and shame that comes along with it, forced me to shut you off because of how far off you are!

ive never done this before (listen to a video while having anxiety / panic) and it turned the anxiety mostly into sadness bc i realized how utterly helpless and out of control i feel below all that panic and this is more than what years of therapy have done for me

I've listened to this clip so many times so thank you so much!! My night pannick attacks are the worst sometimes especially because of my fear of death. In my childhood I lost my grandmother. She had a brain tumor and after 1 year of struggling we lost her. I suffered so much back then and as an adult I frequently noticed how I am extra attentive to any of my symptoms. Especially...with my headaches that are kind of frequent. I plan on going to the neurologist this year so I really hope I am ok. Sometimes when i try to sleep and maybe my head hurts a little I immediately start thinking that I have a serious problem and that I might die here and now. but "I can handle this, this will pass" .. Hope that anyone who is struggling with anxiety, depression or any mental illness remembers they are strong. Have patience with youself

I needed this!❤ I have gerd and IBS and have had my heart checked at least 50 times. I woke up this morning with cramping and achiness In my chest. I’ve had this feeling hundreds of times with my gerd & IBS flared yet every single time the nagging thought of “it could be a heart attack this time!” And I start panicking🙈
@connieammerman8302
@connieammerman8302 Год назад
I can relate to The GERD. I also have IC. It’s a vicious cycle, if the GERD or IC gets flared up it starts a panic attack which then makes the pain of those two worse and lasts for like a week. Or if I get a panic attack I’m paranoid “oh no, I have to hurry and get this under control so it doesn’t glare the GERD or bladder pain. Is so hard for me to calm down.

same here, every single time I rushed to ER and had a EKG everything was fine with my heart, it's so relieved yet annoying at the same time currently trying to schedule with an endocrinologist to check if my random anxiety attacks are some kind of hormonal overdrive

"Feel the Fear and do it anyway" such a great book and audio that I would listen to when my father was battling cancer. Ty for your videos, I am only recently experiencing major panic attacks because I am trying to be supportive of a loved one that is not well, I am learning how difficult it is to navigate the medical and social services institutions and the way the system seems to be set up for those who need help to give up and go away, unless you can afford legal representation. Thank you for your calm voice and wise words, I can get through this for my loved one and for myself, panic and worry will not get the best of me, I have a purpose and I can do this today. 🌻✌️💖

Thank you ❤. The very idea of telling myself that its ok to feel anxiety and panic. Well shucks. Thats a whole new concept and I love that. I have understood the fear of fear. But just didnt accept it and be ok. In fact Id try to push it down more by not telling myself that it is ok. I have experienced episodes and have managed them with breathing, and calling a friend, cold water. I wish and pray all my friends here healing to their sweet brains and nervous system. ❤H

last year I had my first panic attack experience but I thought it was heart attack. Started to feel suffocating, heart beating fast as hell, tried to calm down only turned into hyperventilation, dizziness and lose of control. I lost consciousness for a monment. Later that month I went to hospital for heart issue but find out nothing wrong. Only this year, I read some info about panic attack, finally I feel I find my cause. Thanks

Thank you so so much for this video!! I had never had panic attacks in my life until just recently! It all started during a rough pregnancy where I legitimately did about pass out at times! I finally decided this is what was happening to me. After visiting with my doctor, he agreed. So I sat down to look for some tools and techniques while in my rational mind to help when these hit. You described EXACTLY what happens to me and how I feel! It’s all life and light to me! God bless you for your work!

For me this didn’t help but I appreciate the thought to help out. My main advice to make this appeal to everyone with panic attacks would be cut the intro out of the vid; chances are people who click on are currently having a panic attack and in need of immediate help or relief which an intro will not help provide.
