I used to suffer from horrifically severe panic attacks and tried everything to stop them. Slow breathing, visualization, environmental focusing etc. Nothing helped. Then, once during an extremely intense panic attack, I farted. It made me laugh. After I laughed I noticed my body starting to calm itself a bit. This led to the attack slowly subsiding then eventually coming to an end. I realized that my genuine laughter must have sent a signal to my brain that I wasn't THAT panicked. Since then, whenever I've felt a panic attack coming on, I go on RU-vid via my phone and listen to fart videos. It's worked like a charm. FYI: this is a true story, I'm not trying to be funny.

Antidepressants at 18-29. 31 now. I took way to much, but took about 20g of Gold caps (Psilocybin containing mushroom) I analyzed my entire life. The emotions that came out helped me understand behavior etc more. Third, I start rub my arms like you mentions which I did not realize until a family started noting sign that a major attack was coming like it or not before the other physical activity start which are exhausting. I was having my blood work done. I started getting an attack and at first I thought it was just my ADHD acting up but then I felt the absolute fear and I almost pulled my arm away from the nurse and the needle. There is something so very real about that moment when you almost do something you KNOW is stupid and crazy, but feels like the only way you can escape the situation.

@@Samuel-ku1qb yeah I can totally relate I'm only 14 I was at a doctors appointment they needed to do blood work on me to see if I had low iron which I did in the end and I was already going threw alot of anxitey so once I saw the blood being drawn out of me I tried to hold it together first I felt very sick then I started going cold and queezy then I went in a cold sweat and was shaking visibly and once the doctor was done I quite litterally slumped over and passed out and I was out of it for like 30 seconds ever since then passing out has been a mechanism for my body to stop panic attacks which can be very dangerous

I get overwhelming, terrifying, uncontrollable feelings of panic that come on unexpectedly out of the blue, and feel that I must immediately get away from wherever I am. During the episodes my body feels hot, feels like I can't breathe like I'm going to suffocate or being smothered, and feel claustrophobic as if everything is closing in on me. It's HORRIBLE and can make me cry just talking about it!! I often want to hurry outside and escape to big open spaces and feel like I need to be around people/friends to help calm me or I will freak out. It's a sudden feeling of I've got to get out right now, get away, run for my life. Even talking about it in this comment can cause anxiety. Seems to happen more often when I'm tired and haven't slept well, but not always. It just happened when I was about to get my hair cut, I know it sounds ridiculous. I sat in the chair. She wrapped a warm towel completely around my neck and put the covering over me that keeps the hair off. I suddenly got hot and like I couldn't breathe and I had to get out. I excused myself to the bathroom, where I tried to collect my thoughts and rubbed cold water all over my body under my clothes, tried talking myself down. The episodes can happen anywhere anytime, even when I'm relaxed. During an attack I try to focus on happy things and breathe deeply, but it's very hard, almost impossible, to calm down, at least for awhile. I wonder if anyone else experiences something similar and how they cope. My heart goes out to anyone who suffers from these.
@marybachmann
@marybachmann 5 лет назад
This is a better description of a panic attack than any professionals have ever given. If I am awakened in the night, this will happen to me. If I hear certain music, it will happen. It is not primarily a physical thing--it is a mental thing, so no amount of relaxing, "grounding," massaging, distracting, or reasoning stops it. My CBT instructor gave me the best advice. He said that the chemistry that gives you the feelings cannot be sustained and will run itself out. Keep this in mind. The attack will not last. Keeping this thought is the closest I've ever come to relief during an attack. I recently started taking a supplement of 5-MTHF 1mg, which I saw somewhere was recommended for panic attacks. I have not had an attack since I started taking it about a month ago. I have also eliminated sugar from my diet and started intermittent fasting and MCT oil, so it could be a nutritional thing, though panic attacks can be caused also by mitral valve prolapse syndrome, which is a metabolic problem. So all this points to a nutritional solution, in my opinion. I hope you try this and reply if it works for you.
@garypierce996
@garypierce996 5 лет назад
@@marybachmann Thanks for the comment and advice. I'm sorry you've experienced this!! It's so very bad and can be terrifying. I'll look into the 5-MTHF. Sounds interesting. Eliminating sugar for me would be extremely difficult, but I've heard this before and that it can have huge benefits to the mind and body. I don't doubt it, but I'm addicted to it big time. I'll have to make myself stop. I have fibromyalgia, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, untreated sleep apnea, allergies, and serious sinus/breathing problems. Good nutrition is said to help most of these conditions. I'm willing to change whatever I must to stop the panic attacks and physical pain. Thank you!
@marybachmann
@marybachmann 5 лет назад
@@garypierce996 I have a bunch of autoimmune problems and I am addicted to sugar, too. I was eating a pint of ice cream each night or a box of shortbread cookies, in addition to all the other places it's hidden, like sauces/soups and stuff. But the intermittent fasting REALLY helps with that. I drink coffee with cream and MTC oil until afternoon and eat only between 1 PM and 8. Then some herbal tea to sip on at night. After about 40 years of ice cream, I don't crave it anymore! Good luck to you!

Jeff, Surprised --you need medication. How are you now? To feel better reduce negative thoughts. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives good relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Do the practice without any expectations. When taking a walk, at office, in college, when reading, before sleep etc observe your breath sensations. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a better life. Reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Best wishes--Counsellor.

@@AlondrajNunez A panic attack isn't harmful . In fact the symptoms of a panic attack is to save you. When having one some blood from your extremities will go to the major muscles to give you added strength. This helps you if you're being attacked by someone or something. Pro tip on panic attacks. Don’t try to soothe it per this video. By resisting, it’ll get worse (what you resist will persist). First of all, they’re completely harmless. Secondly, you need to ask for more. More panic! Dare it to! By doing so, you don’t fear them anymore. A panic attack is a fear of fear. That’s what keeps them alive and makes them stronger. You need to WANT them to happen! The more the better! Quickly you’ll see they’re really nothing to be scared of (it’s the exact same feeling as after you’ve sprinted for a few minutes, physiologically it’s the same). This is the quickest way to cure them, and this is the only cure for panic attacks. Research Dr Claire Weekes.

At first your comment sounds stupid but really it's exactly what helps them but doesn't cure them. I got over mine by forcing myself into situations and places where I knew they'd occur. Like the mall. Being around that many people, far away from my safe place was terrifying. But after a few trips, I can walk around the mall for hours. I still get panic attacks but I'm 98% better than I used to be. I've noticed over the years that my stomach has a lot to do with it. If I get trapped gas, panic attack is surely to follow. Stress causes them too.. So I do limit my interactions with family and friends and situations that could cause stress but you can do it without drugs or therapy. It's possible. I was bed-ridden and house bound for a year. Now I have a job. I'm on the PTA board, I shop, I drive and even drive my family on vacations out of state. I just bring a familiar which is my blanket. Yes, I'm 37 with a blankie but you got to do what you got to do..

I wouldn't say they are completely harmless. Mine get to the point where my legs become stiff and numb ( I can't walk) and my hands also go numb to the point where I can't hold or pick up things. I have to sit on my hands to keep them from shaking. There also is the mental side effects so I'm not me for at least an hour. So depending on where I'm at things can go bad. I have no choice but to take medication.

For all of you going through panic attacks. Iam so sorry. I have been dealing with them for a little over 16 years. On and off my Prozac which has helped me tremendously( never be ashamed of turning to medication if you have to) it has now been 2 years since I been off my medication and I get one every once in awhile but I have started doing breathing exercises and cut back on caffeine. So when I feel an attack coming on I breathe and before I know it its gone. It never turns into a full blown attack. Mine used to be so bad that I would get them 3-4 times a day, couldn't eat, couldn't sleep and I wouldn't leave my house. Hang in there, it does get better eventually. It's hard I know!!! I sat in the waiting room trying to drink water and calm my nerves.. the feeling got so bad I had to tell the nurse I needed help immediately. The doctor came to check my pressure and the whole time checking on me I thought that was my last day here. I instantly went into fear thinking about my child, not wanting to be gone so soon. The doctor ensured me it’s probably an anxiety attack.. they sent me to the ER, they ran tests on me and everything came out fine. I’m gonna try ashwagandha supplements hopefully it helps. But yes the feeling is frightening but I will overcome this. We will all get through this.

I have a panic attack disorder/OCD. The OCD started when I was very young, (about 7 years old) and the panic attacks started when I was about 18. (I’m 21 now.) I remember my first panic attack being breathing related. I was focusing to much on how I was breathing, and it started to feel as though I was breathing manually instead of instinctually. Suddenly my mind made me believe I was going to stop breathing, so it went into panic mode. I COULDNT BREATH. I started rocking myself, and trying everything in my power to ignore this feeling. (Note to self: never ignore panic symptoms, address them) NOTHING HELPED. At the time I didn’t know anything about panic attacks, so I thought I was having some serious health problem. I felt extremely dizzy, and sick to my stomach. The room was spinning, and my fingers and feet cramped up and went numb. It felt like I wasn’t in control of my body, or anything around me. How could I forget the heart flutters in my chest? Felt like someone kept knocking on my chest like it was made of wood. Finally I grounded myself with the help of my family, and some water. OH, a fan blowing on me also really helped. After 3 years of dealing with this anxiety, I’m STILL scared of encountering another one of those panic attacks. The thought of it happening in public terrifies me. It got to the point where I couldn’t eat anymore. I was scared of things in food that could cause heart attacks or any health problem, so I started starving myself! You know how hard it is to find foods with little to no sugar?? NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE. I went from 155lbs, down to 118lbs in 3 months. It was not good for me at all. Basically, I was lying to myself. I kept telling myself “it’s gotta be the caffeine, or the sugar.. maybe if I cut it all out I’ll be okay!” Nope. I was wrong. Less sugar and caffeine definitely helps, but I don’t recommend completely cutting it cold turkey. Anyways, 3 years down the road I still experience anxiety, after trying everything. I’ve tried therapy, medication, breathing techniques, and so much more. I can’t wait for the day where I find that thing that does help and I can be free from worry. I wish you all luck on this journey, you’re not alone.

I'd describe what I have as anxiety attacks rather than panic attacks judging from the comments. The racing heart is the worst and scariest symptom. A couple of things that you can do. First get an ECG done, which will probably reassure you that your heart is OK (yes I know that may take a bit of courage). Second, get a prescription for alpha or beta blockers. They're normally given to people with high blood pressure but they do reduce a high pulse to a normal level in about half an hour, and a schoolfriend who is now a psychiatrist for the NHS sometimes prescribes them for panic attacks. I always carry a couple with me, though try and sit out an anxiety attack first. Hope you're feeling better than you did when you wrote your comment.

Just my two cents, slow deep breaths in my personal experience caused me to become mild to extremely numb as well as brought on dizziness during panic attacks. I felt that a lack of oxygen wasn’t the problem as much as the hyperventilating leading to the over-expelling of carbon dioxide. I began practicing taking short conscious breaths, mainly a focus on 2 seconds in and 2 seconds out which normalized my levels of carbon dioxide in the blood, which made me less prone to attacks. Hope this helps some people out there, much love.

The hard thing about a panic attack is actually believing that there is nothing wrong. I had my first panic attack a few days ago, and it was absolutely terrifying. It felt as though I was at the brink of death. Everything was fine like every day life, and then boom. Out of nowhere heart palpitations. It came on so fast I couldn't wrap my head around what was happening. Before I know it my mom was on the phone with 911, and I was lying on the bed completely paralyzed, with my heart beating faster than I ever thought was possible. It was almost impossible to udder the simplest words out of my mouth. I could feel my eyes thumping to the beat of my heart, and I was 100% sure that something had happened where I was experiencing cardiac arrest, and I surely was going to passing away that night. With that being said, what helped me out of that attack was the calm, cool, and collected voice of the EMTs asking me questions that brought me outside the thoughts of certain doom. They asked my name, my birth date. What I had for dinner, what I did over the summer ect. They told me to control my breathing, and as soon as I slow it down my heart rate will stop to drop, and I'll be able to move again. The EMTs that day gained my full trust. Thank God for those professionals. They truly make a difference.

@dbw166
@dbw166 3 года назад
This might work for someone feeling very anxious in general, but a full blown panic attack is probably the worst thing you could experience. It's not distracting your mind from something you think that might happen, you literally feel like you're going to die and feel like you might be having a heart attack or something similar. You get the sensation someone might get when they're having an actual heart attack. For me I had my whole right side go pins and needles, accompanied by a sense of absolute terror. Knowing what it is after the first experience kind of helps manage it a bit, but it's probably the worst feeling ever. The first time if you don't know what it is, feels like you just lost your mind totally. Once you've had that experience it also generates a constant fear that it might happen again. This is where the generalized anxiety kind of gets amplified.

When I'm having a panic attack I try to close my eyes and recite the alphabet slowly thinking of something beginning with each letter, A.. Apple. B... Ball etc. I know it probably sounds stupid but concentrating on that 99% of the time helps, a few prayers in between and wrap myself in a quilt in bed, feels like a safe place.

Ok, real tips instead of tell sell advices! Wanna get rid of aniety attacks , do all of this : Quit all added sugars, coffee (caffaine), marihuana, alcohol, sigarettes, or simple carbs. Drink 2,5 litrs water a day, eat fresh foods from mother earth. Exercise everyday on a low speed. Learn to say NO to people, dont worry about small things in life, quit negative thinking and replace with positive thinking, walk straight, dont get angry anymore, practice breathing excercices every day laying on bed, breath trough stomach slowly, only do things YOU like to do, dont worry about death, we all will die some day so enjoy, dump negative people, find positive people, go left instead of always right, play like a child again, dont listen music that make depressed, watch happy movies, dont listen to negative news on internet or television anymore, go out in nature, eat small portions over a whole day, dont eat till full, eat 80% till full, when wake up, laugh (if its fake, doenst matter, brain will believe it one day), make list of things you wanna do this year and do IT. Dont be insecure, your a human like the rest, you are not less then the rest. Dont fight anxiety, you know you wont die, you know what it is after 1000s of attacks. And do not give a fuck what people think, you are the one who is in control, your life, your choices (bad or wrong). Be free, be happy, be who you wanna be.

I'm constantly worried about my health; every time I feel something slightly abnormal, whether it be a scratchy throat or feeling hot, I think the worst. And this pandemic has only heightened that, especially because I live with a mother who has metastatic breast cancer that's gone into her lungs. So, I fear that I have covid whenever I feel slightly sick, and sometimes it heightens to a panic attack. I take medications but the pandemic has caused me to be more paranoid, making my medications less effective. Watching this, and especially talking about it right now and reading other comments makes me feel one hell of a lot better and much more calm. The moment of laughter and embarrassment you feel when the panic attack is over is one of the best feelings in the world; the feeling that yeah, you are okay, and your fears aren't real, and that you're not going to die...it's something that someone without anxiety disorder may never experience.

If you're able to do it. The technique I have been doing for the last 25 years that was shown to me by a doctor when I was 12 (when my first anxiety panic attacks started). Lay flat on your back with your hands palm down by your side. Make sure your legs and feet are pushing into each other and then lift just your legs off the ground 6 inches, hold it there and count to 10. Lower your legs back to the ground and count to 10. Repeat that 5 times. We did this exercise when I started playing football years later. They're called 6 inch killers but it's like a light switch for anxiety and stress. Helps you sleep too when you're having insomnia.

This is true what happened to me. When I was in my early 20s I was sleeping when I had a sudden panic attack, it woke me up and I ran out of my room as if I was in danger. The lights were off and it was pretty dark but somehow I could see the color of my bedroom walls as if the lights were turned on (they looked dimmed actually) as soon as I got out I felt my body get so heavy, I felt very dizzy, I thought I was gonna faint so I leaned against the wall dragging my feet towards the living room where my mom and sister were, it felt like forever and I was crying coz I wanted help and for this horrible feeling of impending doom to stop. I felt like a little child lost and alone. I bust opened the door to the living room, I wanted to ask my mom if she could drive me to the ER but my sister was on the couch nearest to the door. She yelled at me for scaring her and told me “WHAT DO YOU WANT!! STUPID ASS?!?!?” Something clicked in my head and hearing my sister talk annoyed me that my panic attack just stopped. I looked at my sister and I told her “Nothing , I just came to see mom apparently she’s sleeping !!” I went back to my room, and turned on the lights, I didn’t sleep for the rest of the night. Fearing another panic so I just cleaned to keep my mind off it. That was the worst panic attack I had and it took my sister to make me feel “grounded” and annoyed at the same time

I have uncontrollable anxiety. 10 panic attacks a day… on a good day. Having one now is why I’m here. Doctors don’t know what is the source and obviously on meds. Literally feels like my throat closes and stops working, lungs almost feel like they forget how to work and add that into a pot of your worst fear (like heights), then stir that pot and don’t forget about the scrabbled thoughts or uncontrollable twitching. To sum it up I feel like I’m getting choked 1,000 feet up looking down from the edge of a cliff I feel stuck on with no way down. It’s so bad.

As a person whom have panic non stop for over a year, which gave me depression, Agoraphobia, I over came panic attacks, depression, and now I'm back to working a full time job, my tip is to run towards your fears of a panic attack, sure the sensations are scary, but remember like the doctor said is there to protect us. that's why our blood starts pumping, to get ready to fight or flight, when we fight though each sensations we slowly over come the fears of having panic attacks, but when we flight from the fears, we're only feeding more fears into our anxious mind, fears only feed fears, thing about it this way, a bully only picks on people that doesn't want to fight back, so that person try to avoids the bully, but lives in fears because of the bully, but if that decided to stand up against the bully everyday, that bully will see that he/she can no longer put fears into that person he/she is bullying around.
