We don't always have to paint the colours that are there in our subject. In fact quite often our paintings become far more exciting and dramatic when we don't.
Not only that, it is just really, really fun and can be the area where we really inject our own personality into the painting.
In this watercolour video we look at how to simplify our subject using 4 tonal values and how this frees us up to play around with colour much more!
You can watch the FULL LENGTH, real-time version of this painting over on School of Watercolour:

Incredible! I would never dare to "destroy" a hardly reached drawing with paintstrokes and unnatural colors like this. Nore would I end up with such a beautiful painting. Thank you for sharing your style with us and helping other evolve their ways of drawing and painting too. I like the way you are explaining the drawings, the quick tips, the use of colors, the layers and the importance of light and shadows and soft and hard edges. Especially the colors and big brushstrokes are way out of my comfort zone, but I would like to give it a try.

I want to be able to paint this freely so bad! I'm fairly new to watercolor and I have a hard time "letting go of control" which is why I always shyed away from watercolor. I find myself often overworking a watercolor painting because of this need to control and be precise. I'm still trying to get the hang of things. Thank you for breaking things down for us!

It can be so easy to overwork things with watercolour, and I know all too well the hardness of letting go! ...it will come with time, so keep at it!!:) Finding the areas to let go and others where you can scratch the precision itch helps! And learning to look at your subject in areas of similar tones is so useful as this where you can be loose and free with the paint as long as the tone of colours and washes are roughly right :) T

Thank you Tom! I'm so happy I found your channel. I can knock out a monochrome no problem, but when it comes to colors I really struggle. I hope to try this more in the future.

Oh I was same for ages...very much a tonal painter. You could consider just going for limited palette of 3 primaries and aim for a fairly mono painting with hints if colour...so still focus on tone but colour will appear naturally and then slowly but surely with every painting you can bring up the amount of colour ...this might be a good route for you :)

Do you have a video that really breaks down tonal values? Are tonal values colors that have the same amount of light/ darkness even though they are different colors?
@tomshepherdartist
@tomshepherdartist 2 года назад
Hi Jennifer, great question. I have a few videos from couple years back on tonal values, they may help. Essentially tonal value is how dark or light a colour is (or thing, or part of a thing). Like trying to imagine our colours or our subject as monotone (black, white and greys) So a you could have red; but it could be dark red, light red, mid-tone red, and so on....so the tone/value/tonal value, is varying. (different names for same thing) As you say though, you can also have lots of different colours that are all the same tonal value. In this case they will all "sit" well together in an area. You could put all of these colours with the same tonal value together. Take a photo of them, then turn this photo monotone and they would all look to be exactly the same grey. Any colour has only 3 characteristics. Hue - where does it sit on the colour wheel Chroma - how intense or subdued it is Tone or Value - how light or dark it is If you interested I am doing a series of Free Zoom demos later this month. I will cover tonal values, amongst other things. You can just book on with your email at the link below: www.tomshepherdart.com/watercolour-masterclass-series

Great video but all this discussion of specific colors seems wrong to me. It seems like we all should just learn how to mix colors ourselves and not feel like we have to buy all these specialized colors.
@tomshepherdartist
@tomshepherdartist 11 месяцев назад
Completely agree...this exactly what I teach nowadays in my courses and school. Basic primaries are all that’s needed...learn the basics, when you’ve got them understood one can expand into other weird and wonderful colours :) good topic for a video!!:)
