Loved the way you only used the photo of the Hornbill , as a rough guide, putting in your own shadows and shade.

Tom, you are the best art tutor on here. You keep coming up with (obvious when you know how) things that I never even considered and do not known anyone else who mentions what you teach. You take us to a deeper level and I am so glad to have found you. A great BIG thank you. So much to take in with watercolour and why I like ‘its’ challenge. I am part of your new Art School, you may know who I am. 😊 So much to learn, keep thinking, yeah! I have got it, then you come up with something more … Excellent.

Hi Tom, it is always such a treat when you give us a walk through of a few of your paintings as you explain how to analyse our work. Thank you for another beautiful and informative masterclass.

Your talk on edges really helped me to make sense of it's use. Something I have heard about but this demonstration has hit home much more than other artists explanation. Thanks Tom. Definitely going to watch more of your work.

The windmill! Thanks for sharing that concept. Super helpful. One of my sons was a fan of Dinotopia while growing up. I love the art in those books. Was a flash from the past seeing those books. 🙂

Recently came across your videos - -really good. I'm a big fan of James Gurney, I use his books a lot too!

Thanks so much, Rachel! They are excellent, hey!? Is it the main two Colour & Light, Imaginative Realism you use? Or are there some others too? T

I've only got Color & Light so far; it's a bit technical for a science phobe like me, but it's really helped me understand colour theory that I was never taught in art college!

This video packed a ton of valuable information about using tonal values in your paintings. I guess I need to start studying the masters to achieve the artist I strive to be with watercolors. Thank you for sharing the truth of creating good art. Hard to find it on RU-vid from many of the other artists who post tutorials.

So pleased you found it useful! I always go back and look at the old masters and study from other artists, it is so useful...Everyone thinks about things differently and explains things differently, you'll find nuggets of information that really make sense to you personally and your painting :) Thanks for the kind words and the support. Really appreciate it. T

Love this discussion. And am a huge huge fan of James Gurney and his genius! Both are brilliant books as well as Dinotopia... going to look at my work in progress tomorrow for these concepts and see how I am doing... already can think of one area that needs some tweaking. Love how loose your style it..one day I will let go of the details... one day...

Thanks Alison. He is an absolute genius, and his books are fantastic. I grew up with Dinotopia book which I loved. Getting it no painting in my 20s I then came across James Gurney and was hooked, only to then realise I had grown up loving his book, which made it even better!!..I assume you know his RU-vid channel..it's great!! @@tomshepherdartist yes I love Gurney’s RU-vid channel too. Great sense of cracked humour. I am always amazed by what he chooses to paint, then turns it into something glorious like dirty snow in a parking lot, or a chair…. Absolute genius and funny! Bet he would be such fun to hang out with. There is a Tv series based on Dinotopia also. My daughter had us all hooked and it has wonderful well known Brits in it… can’t live without my British tv stars….thanks for all you do on your RU-vid channel.

Thanks Tom this is really interesting, I am going to try doing the windmill technique with my next painting to see if I can improve. I am so pleased you are going to do an online class in the UK, I have been looking for classes in my local area but struggling to find any and I really want to learn. How will I find out when they are available?

Really insightful video Tom, but I think you do yourself an injustice. You also have levels of focus in your work and you use lots of light on light in other areas, such as the branch in the hornbill painting.
