I am as tight as a crab's bottom.... and that is watertight... I have $2.5 million in loose liquid beer money. On YT I get howled at and called a bragger. I don't care. I worked for it so its mine. My dad was a co-op grocery van driver...

@@SunofYork I've met multi-millionaires that have like $7 - 14M or so, and are invested in exciting, risky ventures like.... warehouses near the CBD .. haha. One guy wore jeans, t-shirt, a $10k Panerai, but drove a beat up ute, so he didn't have to care where he parked or if it got dented. The watch was his only bling, and that's how people 'in the know' can often spot each other, a single mark of quality, sometimes none at all, just reputation. My big boss owned 7 companies, very down to earth. Made his money in mining stocks I think, but knew how to run businesses, we were in his failed $4M tech start-up (they have notoriously high failure rates) , but he still sold it to someone else (another multi-millionaire) for $2.5M consideration so didn't lose out too badly.

@@VenturiLife Excellent !! I know my $2.5 million liquid cash (plus paid-off house), is chump change to a rich person, but from where I came from, it is untold riches. I once saved hard for 6 months (as an adult), to afford a radio control for my model boat.. It is "not caring if it all goes wrong" that is the biggest warm fuzzy.. If someone wants to hijack my car then no problem.. Let em have it and then I can try and scalp the insurance. Some fools will pull a gun and die in agony, or spend life in jail after trying to protect their car ! "Pride comes before a fall"...
@VenturiLife

@@SunofYork Yes, you have to be sensible about things, and 2.5M cash and a house is something many people will never achieve after a lifetime of hard work, as they don't control their spending, and don't have an investment mindset of any kind. Yet they'll earn millions in their working life. I don't bother comparing myself to others, as there will always be greater and lesser people than myself, and you'll never be happy doing so as it just breeds envy or hubris. When I see an actual homeless person I realize that could be me, if a just few things were to go wrong in life. Material possessions come and go.

I grew up in Midland, MI and the richest guy in town was Herbert Dow Jr of Dow Chemical fame. The second richest was the guy who owned the local junk yard. Part of his wealth came from a couple of patents he had for handling scrap metal but he also lived in a modest house and drove the junkers that came into the yard. If they ran, he'd drive them until they died. They'd get scrapped and he'd drive the next junker that came in the yard. Having money in the bank, is a WAY better feeling. A new car is new to you for a few months or so. You worry about parking it, get upset over any ding or chip and are probably stuck with high payments for 5yrs. Paying higher insurance and taxes on it, on top of it. PS Unsurprising to me senior/"veteran" employees drive something old and unremarkable and I even keep my older car a good distance from others in the lot in anticipation of when the EV pandemic leads to widespread EV fires roasting nearby cars. This is the "other" angle Simon isn't talking about here. If you WANT to buy a nice new car and still want to save money, then keep the same car for 15-20 years. There are a couple of huge advantages that come from buying a new car over a used car if your ownership horizon is that long: 1. You have a warranty for the first few years. Buying a new car also grants you some form of lemon law protections that you don't get with a used car. 2. You might quality for 0% financing. Then you can take that cash you would've used to pay the car off and put it in an HYSA and keep the difference in interest. 3. A newer car may be more fuel-efficient than a used car. If you are coming from an old sedan to something like a Hybrid corolla, this alone can make up for the initially higher insurance and registration costs. As insurance and registration costs decrease as the vehicle ages, you will save even more money in the long-run. 4. And the big one: It's your car from day one. That means you get to maintain it the way you want. This could mean changing the fluids at double or triple the recommended intervals (10,000 mile oil changes are BS. change your oil every 3000-5000 miles). You can buy premium parts and upgrades to prevent further wear (such as mud flaps, seat covers, or Amsoil Motor oil). Then you can drive the car in a manner that maximizes longevity. And If you live in the Midwest or the northeast, you can get the car rustproofed with an oil-based undercoating from day one. If you buy a used car, you will save money up-front. But you have no idea how the previous owner treated their car. And the VAST majority of the public barely does their oil changes on time, let alone changes their transmission and coolant fluid on time. Then they wonder why their car only lasts 120K miles 😠.

For $15k, we would have been getting approximately the same age car at that time. 🤣😂 Our car now has 210k miles on it. Still going strong. With all the money we saved NOT having a car payment, we just bought a 2 year old used truck still under warranty. Got it with 30k miles on it for $36k. Original MSRP new was $56k. Depreciation on new trucks is about $1k a month those first 2 years or so. Got the best deal I could find in the country. 8k vheaper than our local dealer. Called my wife up on Thursday after I found it in Detroit, booked tickets, flew out, and bought it. Drive it back. My wife loved the spontaneous trip, even though I'd been looking for 3 months waiting for the right deal. 🤫 NO car payment.... Still putting $500/month in savings. I agree with the mindset but their are hidden logistics Simon doesn't mention. The cost of a good running vehicle is nowhere near $500-$1500 in my area. That will get you a project, perhaps a shell of a car or one with a blown engine. If you were trying to commute day in and day out you'll be lucky to find one for under three grand. Also, you may have back up cars timer for what does it cost you to get the broken beater back on the road? Often everything fails on these old cars at once. Replacing a ball joint leads to the discovery that the entire front end is shot. And it all needs to be replaced or it will be inefficient repair Than there is the process of sourcing parts and learning how or finding somebody who knows how to repair these quickly obsolete machines. Between three beaters I occasionally pay more than a car payment each month in terms of parts. Just spent about $400 on new brakes, rotors, pads and brake hoses for my station wagon. Very necessary. There's also all the fluids, anti seize ect. I commute 75 miles a day, work on a farm and run a small ranching operation and I have a 99 dodge ram diesel, 90 Toyota cab over diesel pick up, 84 Mercedes-Benz diesel wagon, and a running but not drivable 86 Toyota Camry turbo diesel. All these vehicles are over 20 years old. The only one that was anywhere near the cost Simon mentions was the project car, the Camry which was a thousand bucks. It was sitting for four years and I had to do some work to get it running. I do most to all of my own work on them. Basically, it's not as simple as a drive a POS vehicle. A POS vehicle is a lifestyle one that involves being able to handle the anxiety having your brakes go out while you're driving, having flat tires, having death wobble after you hit a pothole, or having your engine suddenly shut off on the highway. You've got to be ready with tools, manuals and understanding workplace. And you need to be prepared to do some restoration. Driving is the most dangerous thing you can do, don't make it more dangerous by driving a $500 theater that's about to lose a break hose.

Agreed. I’m all for SMART financial decisions (i.e. don’t finance for 8+% interest, don’t live above your means, don’t even live at your means, etc), but money is a means to an end, not the end goal. Specifically, money is not real, it’s a means to obtain equity in something that is real. At the end of the day, all this cash you have could be worth nothing at the push of a button, but a brand new car you really like (that you can afford and don’t have to sacrifice food for) driving will be a car that you really like to drive. Those restaurants you like visiting or that hobby you like doing will bring you enjoyment, the cash will dip in value the next day. Having the balance of liquid vs equity is the key here, and if you’re at the capacity to do so, I would start enjoying life

I often hear this viewpoint that driving an old beater car is financially superior to buying new cars. But it’s always from a viewpoint of someone who uses their car only for commuting, groceries, school, etc. In my case, I went into the contracting business in my early 20s I quickly found that I needed a service truck and vans for my crews. For the next 20 years I’ve found it basically impossible to find used vans and trucks with under 150k miles. So as my business has grown I’ve been forced to buy new trucks. My friends and family think it’s unnecessary but in reality it’s been a necessity. I’ve gotten new vans and trucks for only slightly more than used ones and I get a warranty and generally reliable operation. Just one day with a broken down service vehicle is impossible and can ruin your business. And try renting a work truck. I’ve not found anything close to what we need in a rental so I have to keep spare trucks on hand.

Two pieces of advice. 1. Look over the car you buy very thoroughly and learn anything you can about the owner that would indicate how they care for their vehicles and if they would pass a hot potato onto you. 2. Never stress your vehicle and maintain it religiously. The service manual is your Bible and never miss an oil change interval. Be gentle on your brakes and throttle, air up tires often, try not to let your vehicle rust from neglect.

Not only is it very affordable to purchase an old vehicle, but 80's and 90s and some early 2000s vehicles were also built very economically with simplicity and low cost of ownership in mind, such as your S10 and Corolla in particular. A 90s camry or corolla is about as simple a vehicle as you can get and therefore has few things to break and is easy to fix DIY.

Why not just own 1 decent reliable vehicle and that's it? If you need a vehicle just get a nice low mileage 3-4 year old certified pre-owned vehicle that will last you 15-20 years worry free with regular routine maintenance. Set a reasonable budget and stick to it. Keep the car until it doesn't make sense $ wise when repairs cost too much. Pay for your vehicle all at once, no payments/financing. Mechanics are expensive and old POS cars/beaters will kill you with constant repair costs not to mention the hassle of it all continuously. You also gotta pay for registration, license and smog on several vehicles yearly. It Doesn't make sense multiplying your costs; even though they're all on liability insurance. And on top of it all your stuck driving junkers that you're tired of. Also you need to store these multiple vehicles sowhere, parking can be a pain. Sorry, but I just don't think this is good advice at all. Ive owned a 2015 Ford Fusion Titanium 2.0 Ecoboost FWD since early 2019. I bought it from a DGDG dealership in Concord, Ca for $14,500+ tax , so 16k$ total. No financing or payments, save $. The car has been great, no regrets.

Great video like normal. The only point you are missing is that the car you drive is relative to your financial position. A beater car to another person might be a brand new Mazda 3 rather than a C200. I know your channel must be doing well and you work full-time but your overall experience with money is someone who is in deficit not abundance and that paints your current reality. Eventually all your hard work will hopefully pay off and maybe that Camaro will be much more realistic. Don't forgot though, life is about experiences, don't just gloss over and dismiss that. At the moment your experience is building wealth, hopefully one day you'll have the experience of spending it.

Beater car isn’t really a relative term. A beater car is something that you wouldn’t mind getting scratched or food spilled in. You might be able to define it somewhat on a percentage of your net worth or income but I think the personal attachment is best. Not too many millionaires would be happy if they were told that insurance would fix their one of a kind super car. Behind paper money and numbers on a screen there’s still a lot of design and labor that goes into a one of a kind car.

Comparing a beater to a $1000/mo car payment is disingenuous. The financial benefit of driving beaters into the ground is marginal compared to buying or even financing a 5-10 year old car. And you can't just compare the finances of one beater to a newer car, because as you said you need multiple if you want the same peace of mind in case one breaks. And finding a working $500 vehicle isn't really possible. Beaters start at about $2-3k in todays market. $1200-1500 at the lowest if you find an absolute steal and either know how to inspect cars, pay someone or have a friend do it, or don't mind the risk that the car might have massive unforeseen problems and have to be scrapped in a matter of weeks or months at a $500-$1500+ loss. On that note, it's not like there's no depreciation with a beater. When it inevitably breaks, very likely not long after buying it, it's going to be worth only a few hundred bucks in parts or as a mechanic special.

I agree with this sentiment, even if you are a car guy like I am. The lesson I've learned is to acquire vehicles without getting rid of vehicles as long as possible. I have been car payment free for the last 5 years, but I had to go out and get a new commuter a few months ago. I was given information about my commute for work potentially doubling from before Covid and I wanted a car that was more comfortable and newer than my old car to handle the commute . Literally, one month after I purchased said new car, I found out that I will be working out of my same office as pre Covid, so I've decided to keep the new car and use my old car as a back-up/weekend car. I'm also able to use my parents cars as well as my own, so if I wanted to, I could potentially go for an entire work week without driving the same car.

@@wendwllhickey6426 I’m not sure if you’re old enough to remember the late 90’s or 2000’s or paid much attention to the adults as a kid. History/time is rather cyclical. In the late 90’s boomers and the silent generation said the same thing about the beaters many of us drive when they were new. My old ranger, UE’s S10, and many other 20-30 year old vehicles still rolling on the roads today. That they weren’t as reliable as the older cars of the past, this was when obd2 and computer controled fuel injection was rather new in the grand scheme of things. They complained the cars wouldn’t last and were disposable. That they weren’t made of steel and couldn’t actually lay or sit on the hood of your vehicle anymore like it was a bench. Time has proved many of them wrong. I still see plenty of 20 year old rangers and s10’s that were deemed disposable trucks still rolling and used for work. No more rebuilding an engine at 100k miles like 50 years ago. There’s a video of a semi old tacoma with 1.6 million miles on the odometer. Vehicles have gotten more reliable over time if you actually change your fluids when you’re supposed to. People would say the same talking points about not getting tesla’s about the Prius when it was new, yet time has proven they are rather bulletproof reliable tanks something mechanics can vouch over. The only new cars to be wary of really is anything with forced induction( a turbo or supercharger) which has been known to not be good for longevity for over 50 years. The only reason you see a lot of these now a days is for CAFE regulations in regards to fuel efficiency and when you add the fact maybe 3/4’s of people don’t do proper fluid changes then yes you get disposable cars. I’m pretty sure my new prius will still be rolling in 25+ years or until gasoline availability goes away. I tend to keep my vehicles for life so I’ll probably see some appreciation after 25 years once it’s a classic car and only EV’s are available for sale as new vehicles. My project car that I bought off my father despite needing a paint job still fetches more now than when it was new 52 years ago. My ranger is following that same trend. One sold for it’s msrp value 2 years ago. It’s a bit of a gamble when you buy a new car as to whether the eventual appreciation after a quarter century outpaces the inflation. Sports cars and trucks generally do, even some econo shitboxes once they are old enough that nostalgia kicks in.
