I live on Big Island. I would say in terms of things for homesteading its actually easier than you think to get things. A huge percentage of the rural population lives off grid, so there are many businesses that carry catchment systems and off grid solar parts and plenty of people who know how to use them. We also have the most helpful homesteading community. 15 acres is too much unless you have cattle in your plans. The average person will struggle to maintain 3--but you can definitely produce all your fruits and vegetables and eggs and some goats on 3 acres and have some left for trades.

We are on big island in puna and have a lot of videos about growing food. There are a lot of challenges due to the lack of soil and large amounts of rain we get.

Oh hey guys, Ive been watching you for years. Im on the Kona side. The potting soil I make is inspired by one of your videos. Its not exactly the same but similar. I actually use more cinders for drainage than you do and I live on one the driest parts of the island, which I thought was kinda weird. But I guess thats just hawaii.

There is already a huge problem with the displacement of local families and gentrification of the islands which is felt more and more every day. Another key factor that most don't realize is that ALL land titles are defective and there is a movement growing to reclaim stolen ancestral lands that remain in allodial titles (fee simple). If there were ever a collapse scenario the only strength will be your relationship with the local community which as you mentioned is very weak with recent transplants. I highly suggest that people look elsewhere for their sanctuary,

Aloha from Maui. My wife has family property next to George Harrison's estate. It was very nice at one time, but now just a battle against the 19 acres of jungle. My wife has 3 acres up in Haiku also, better location but still a pain in the butt... Montana would be my pick in the USA. If I could EXPAT out of the USA like I want... I would move to Russia, coutryside... USA is not a sinking ship. It is a sunk ship. get out if you can.

Hawaii is an amazing place! I've been here since 1998, but it's time to move on. Living on 94 acres near Pahoa (Kapoho), where it's warm, but rarely hot, moderate rainfall. Elevation is 220" to 325', which is the preferred climate for Papaya and many other fruits. Lovely ocean view makes it so nice. It's for sale and it's not that expensive....around $700K. It's not listed yet, so if anyone interested, let's make a deal without paying commission to a realtor.

I live on the oceans of all the world on 37 feet. Today were in thailand and its raining and gusting 30 knots. I started from haleiwa hawaii in 1990

Just bought a raw property in south big island Naalehu. Going to put a small off grid cabin on it very native feel around there good place to hang out couple months in the winter time.

rat lungworm is a major concern when growing food in hawaii. you also have to pay attention to elevation depending on what you want to grow, it changes very quickly if you're up on the hamakua coast. one awesome thing is they have some super rich soil, i'm talking organic content of 25% in many areas.

I'm Off Grid on Big Island, Rain forrest in Upper Puna at 1800' elevation. Not much topsoil... Had to bring in A LOT of gravel and Mulch. Citrus does well up here. Solar gets a LOT of cloud cover to be fully efficient... But I also get a lot of wind where I am so the next project is wind generators

People play up volcanic activity alot. Its really not as much of a threat as people think.

Hawi and Hilo are too expensive. If you want to homestead head to Fern Acres, Mountain View, or Kurtistown.

Also, all the different climates sound cool but really, for farming that means that the techniques you use on your property will not work the next town over. Theres aloooooot of trial and error. Half the farming tips on youtube dont work here.
