We launched in the darkness to look for akule (goggle eyes) as live bait, but they weren't home. Once the sun peaked over the horizon, we searched for opelu but once again, no bait appeared to be in their usual spots. Luckily, I'd brought some ono belly and my deep drop rigs so I pedaled way out wide to the 600-foot ledge, passing through multiple bird piles and wishing I had any bait! Once I found the deep ledge, I baited my 8/0 gamakatsu circle hooks with some ono belly chunks and sent the rig down. It took quite a while, but the first nibbles finally came and eventually I hooked into something heavy that felt like either a kahala (amberjack) or a small shark. I popped my Avet MXL into low gear and used the reel like a winch. Eventually I spotted a grey-brown shape below me and was a bit bummed that I'd hooked yet another kahala. However, when the fish surfaced I saw it was actually a decent hapu'upu'u (Hawaiian Sea Bass). This fish definitely made my day, as they tend to be pretty hard to catch and are delicious. On the way back to shore, we got caught in a decent squall with torrential rain and gusty winds. At least the wind and waves made for quick yet bumpy ride home.

That looked like it got a little adventurous. I have never seen anyone in Hawaii (watching videos) catch one of those grouper before. Good luck was smiling down on you for braving that seat weather 🤙🏼

Weather flipped a couple times! Windward side is always a gamble never know what its gonna really be like. Those groupers are pretty rare nowdays I guess used to have way more so I feel very lucky to have gotten two so far!

Love how easy you could winch that hapu'upu'u up in low gear. Awesome adventure through good and bad weather.

Yeah the Avet's a solid reel. Need to hook a fish that can actually have a chance against it.

You know, you peddling in the squall was awesome! That Hawaiian sea bass...nice fish. Do you like the gaff that you use on your kayak and if yes, please tell me what brand it is as I need to get a gaff for halibut fishing here in California. Mahalo.

Thanks man 🤙 Pretty happy with the gaff even though it doesn't float. Its a Centro short handled gaff.

Those first fish…To’au? Used to catch those off the rocks by Onekahakaha all the time. Place is loaded with them.

This time they were taape (blue lined snapper). Super invasive and they've really exploded in population since I was a little kid.
