We launched in the darkness to look for akule (goggle eyes) as live bait, but they weren't home. Once the sun peaked over the horizon, we searched for opelu but once again, no bait appeared to be in their usual spots. Luckily, I'd brought some ono belly and my deep drop rigs so I pedaled way out wide to the 600-foot ledge, passing through multiple bird piles and wishing I had any bait! Once I found the deep ledge, I baited my 8/0 gamakatsu circle hooks with some ono belly chunks and sent the rig down. It took quite a while, but the first nibbles finally came and eventually I hooked into something heavy that felt like either a kahala (amberjack) or a small shark. I popped my Avet MXL into low gear and used the reel like a winch. Eventually I spotted a grey-brown shape below me and was a bit bummed that I'd hooked yet another kahala. However, when the fish surfaced I saw it was actually a decent hapu'upu'u (Hawaiian Sea Bass). This fish definitely made my day, as they tend to be pretty hard to catch and are delicious. On the way back to shore, we got caught in a decent squall with torrential rain and gusty winds. At least the wind and waves made for quick yet bumpy ride home.
