Pidgin is the language of Hawaii. I will never forget my Japanese school teachers could speak perfect English and brutalize our assignments with their red pens, then speak pidgin to the cafeteria staff & custodians outside of class. Aloha spirit runs deep and true forever.

@@AndyBumataiShow The reason Pidgin is spoken is because the locals wanted to communicate with the foreigners, and also because the Hawaiian language is almost never spoken. Growing up in Hawaii, I'll admit there is some Pidgin I don't even know. So thanks braddah, from Texas.

Cool... As a Correctional Officer in a local prison, we had Hawaiian inmates. Believe it or not, they were cool people in spite of the situation and many of them spoke pigeon. Got a lot of invites to Hawaii to work. Wish i could have taken them up on the invite. It was a unique cultural experience working with them. Ride safe.

Ha, ha, ha, Bruddah Kyle...I understood everything this man was saying since I grew up in Honolulu. When I visited Honolulu in 2018 I seldom encountered such thick pidgin as this man spoke. Among the locals I tendered to hear something that was more, half-pidgin, or close to standard English with traces of pidgin. Younger people are more exposed to the vast growth in television, cable television, more movies, dvds, downloads, in which standard English is spoken so the local young people are speaking less pidgin and closer to standard English as time goes by.
@jacobr4558

There needs to be a acknowledgment of different dialects of pidgin English here in Hawaii. For example, each neighbor island has its own dialect, and Hilo is different than Kona. Also urban HONOLULU has a different pidgin dialect than say Leeward Oahu.

I was malahini o ka aina in Hilo for 12 years (back on mainland for two). As I started picking up the Hawaiian language, through hula class, I noted different pronunciations on Kona side. Later, we had a great class on language differences throughout the Hawaiian Islands by our kumu hula.

I know what you mean, Robby. I too was raised in Honolulu so I understood this man's conversation entirely, even though I speak only standard English here on the mainland. When I visited Honolulu back in 2018, I noticed a lot of the kamaaina people were not speaking such thick pidgin as this man. It was more, half-pidgin, and I sensed that many were speaking close to standard English, albeit with still a notable pidgin accent. I believe this is due to the ever-growing industry television, cable television, and far more movies available in which everyone speaks standard English. That is why when young Kamaaina kids grow up in Hawaii watching all these shows, they'll tend to pick up more standard English language inflection than Kamaainas from several generations ago. In other words, Hawaiian creole pidgin is slowly but surely evolving away. Also more mainlanders are relocating to the islands, bringing with them standard English speech.
