Thank you. I really enjoyed filming this one, it was quite surreal standing in the remains of the village. There was an atmosphere being there that is difficult to explain. Awesome experience. 👍🏻

@@ThatllDoVlog Yes it looks surreal and a little spooky , it’s amazing how isolated the village must have been the surrounding scenery is amazing. Are there any photos of the village before it was demolished? It would be really interesting to see them. Cheers, Phil.

@@bear01745 Not many old photos out there. I have found one which I'll be posting with a side by side comparison on my Facebook page tomorrow.

They were compensated, but I’m sure it wouldn’t have been enough. How much would you take to leave such a beautiful place. I’m not sure any amount would fully compensate. ☹️ Thank you for watching. 👍🏻

Some actually did find other farms to move to. The publican moved to another pub in Shap village. Yes, there was some compensation, but it' never enough....

Yes. It would have been a beautiful village.

If the water level drops sufficiently, it is still fairly easy to spot the remains of the church foundations. Assuming you know where to look of course..... It is smaller than you might imagine. By the way, the dam itself wasn't fully completed until 1940, and that is when the level of the water began to rise to it's present level. Up until the 80's, the bridge actually had walls on each side. But sadly the walls have been robbed out by souvenir seekers. You are a little out with your church yard location. The water level was still a little high to see the location of the church. It was almost at the foot of the wooded area that projects out into the lake. In 1984, grass actually began to grow on the tennis court immediately opposite the Dun Bull Inn..... The school was moved, stone by stone, and rebuilt a couple of miles back down the road towards Bampton Grange. A large stone, on which some of Mardale's children had carved faces, is still in position outside the gate of the "school" , which is now a private dwelling..... Shap Historical Society has much information about Mardale, along with many old photographs of the village prior to it's demolition. There are even a couple of publications available - with lots of info and old photos- available from the Society itself.

@@Brian-om2hh I have the original photos of the image outside the house taken by a late friend, the image is now weathered away and was of the headmaster of the school. The stone was found by locals below the dam whilst walking their dogs and moved to where it lies today.

@@daviddanielstephenson2833 Mardale School was removed, stone by stone, and rebuilt around 2 to 3 miles or so back down the road towards Bampton. It is now a private dwelling......

@@Brian-om2hh Hi Brian,The school in question was the Measand grammar school run by Rev Richard Hebson; there was also another public school mid way along the valley. It was the grammr school which now stands at Walmgate Head and owned by a freind of ours, when we visit te area we always call in for a coffee.

Hello. We didn’t have such a dry summer this year in the lakes so the village remained underwater. The lake at the moment is full.

@@ThatllDoVlog What a shame. I've been watching similar clips of the reservoirs in the Peak district and how this year the lost villages are showing. Of course , they are further south so had a much drier summer. I will keep my eye out for more videos from you

@@ThatllDoVlog If you want/need a bit more Mardale info, Shap Historical Society (they have a website) have lots more, including some books and publications only available from them. I recently attended a talk/slide show of theirs in Bampton village, and it was really interesting.
