Paul Bonhomme flying Anglia Aircraft Restorations 1953 Bristol Centaurus XVII engined, Hawker Fury Mk.II, SR661, G-CBEL. The aircraft is seen here being prepped and taking off for the East Midlands Airshow at Ragley Hall, Warwickshire on Saturday 19th May 2018.
This Fury, construction number 37539 was produced by Hawker’s as a Fury ISS - Iraqi Single Seat for the Iraqi Air Force, as part of contract number 53/1/012 for 60 aircraft, and was numbered 315 within this production batch. The aircraft was bought to Orlando, Florida, USA from Iraq in 1979 by Ed Jurist and David C Tallichet. In 1989 the aircraft passed to Laws/Coleman Warbird Museum, Coleman, Texas where it was rebuilt to airworthy condition, before flying again in April 1991, registered as N36SF. The Fury was then shipped to the UK in September 1991, passing into the ownership of John Bradshaw at Wroughton until 2009. During this time the aircraft flew in the markings of a Dutch Navy and latterly Royal Australian Navy aircraft marked as 361 and on the UK Civil Register as G-CBEL. She was then exported to Australia where she was registered as VH-SFW. She was imported back into the UK by her new owners, Anglia Aircraft Restorations Ltd. and was re-registered again as G-CBEL. The aircraft has been refurbished and repainted, by Air Leasing Ltd, in the colours of one of Hawker’s Sea Fury prototypes coded SR661, which was a modified Fury Mk.II with a tail hook fitted, but without the folding wings included on subsequent production Sea Fury’s.

The proper sounds, no P&W inside but the only engine that makes it a real Fury, a Centaurus, lots of mythology in this plane.

Been in love with the SF ever since the mid seventies, when I saw my first one in the RNAS museum at Yeovilton. It just sat there looking mean, but somehow beautiful. A year or so later I was at an airshow and heard an airplane start up with the sound of a Coffman starter (though I did not know what that was then). I walked over, and there was a SF running and getting ready to taxi out. I could hardly contain my excitement! I swear I was jumping up and down on the spot! I miss those days.

My favorite airplane of all time. I remember back in the seventies I saw a SF on static display in the Yeovilton museum and fell in love with the look of the thing. A few years later I was at an air display, heard a big "CHUFF" and a big engine running. I went over to look, and it was a Sea Fury actually running. I nearly pissed myself in sheer delight. The only thing that could ever surpass that would be to hear a Typhoon or Tempest with a Napier Saber running. There is a possibility, thanks to a group in the UK restoring a Typhoon, but at my age, I am running out of time.
@HighFlight
@HighFlight 5 лет назад
Let's hope that you do get to see and hear the Hawker Typhoon again. The plan is for it to be flying for the 80th anniversary of D-Day on 6/6/2024 and the Aircraft Restoration Company at Duxford have been engaged to help achieve that - if anybody can do it, then they can. The Napier Sabre they have is pristine with zero hours. hawkertyphoon.com

A Sea Fury did take out a Mig 15 in the Korean war. A Vought Corsair also accomplished the feat flown by Jesse G. Folmar off the USS Bataan, a light aircraft carrier (a WWII ship decommissioned and eventually scrapped in 1961) . In Vietnam two Mig 17s were downed by prop driven Skyraiders and possibly a 3rd with another Mig suffering significant damage. The Skyraider was about 100 mph slower than the Sea Fury but had similar cannon armament. One of the Skyraiders was flying from Intrepid, a museum ship in NY Harbor and the other flying from the Midway a museum ship in San Diego harbor. I have had the opportunity to visit both museum ships which I recommend visiting.

I was stationed on the Baltic in the late 1960's and one of the 5-bladed prop versions was used to pull a target sock for the ak-ak gunners to shoot at. One of the pilots was a hot shot and after dropping the target would dive and buzz our chow hall, just for fun. He would be so low on his pass that the windows and plates would rattle and the water in glasses would ripple from the engine roar and compressed air under his wings. This same pilot was one of a very few pilots to ever "cart-wheel" this plane - some trick. It has been a delight to once again hear the roar of the engine and scream of the prop of this beast.

As VH-SFW this Fury lived at my local airport in Moree Australia. It was owned, maintained, and flown by a local crop duster pilot. It flew almost weekly and often "beat up" the airfield in spectacular fashion, with low low high speed passes, and aerobatics. And that Bristol radial had a sound all it's own! I live next to the airport and only needed to walk to my side fence to see the fun. Our loss is the UK's gain....

To be precise (and pedantic...yadda, yadda...) that is a "Sea Fury". There were a couple of "Furies" produced by Hawker over the years. One was a biplane predecessor to the Hurricane while a later Fury (and this aircraft's immediate ancestor) was basically a centaurus radial-engined Tempest with some aerodynamic refinements. It wasn't to go into production and service with the RAF but the Fleet Air Arm adopted a further refinement and adaptation of that design for carrier use. A beautiful aircraft.
@HighFlight
@HighFlight 3 года назад
Following which Hawkers received a large order from the Iraqi Air Force for 'Sea Furies' without any naval components, including folding wings. Some of these aircraft were converted Sea Fury FB.11s, but most were newly built from scratch and were officially designated by Hawkers 'Fury ISS' the ISS standing for 'Iraqi Single Seat'. Coloquially they were known as 'Baghdad Furies'. This was one of those new build airframes. In addition its current colour scheme is that of one of the 2 original Hawker Sea Fury prototypes, SR661, that were themselves produced from the original Hawker Fury II design for the RAF before becoming 'Sea Fury' prototypes. The real prototype SR661 also lacked folding wings and some of the other naval requirements.

I love the Bristol sleeve valve engineering. And the sound. However, on RU-vid, in the last week I watched video of 2 crashes in the past resulting from engine failure and hydraulic failure destroying 2 beautiful Sea Fury’s. It could have happened with a P&W engine just as easily. The Bristol sleeve valve is a fairly complex engine that had its problems. Kind of like the Wright 3350. One American and one British. I second the comment about the Merlin powered P-51 as being the best Anglo-American aviation collaboration achievement ever.
@leneanderthalien
@leneanderthalien 5 лет назад
reliability from the Bristol engines was better as the US radials: whe known good this sleeve valve engines in France because the Bristol Hercules (14cyl) was built under licence in France by SNECMA up to 1964 to fit the Nord 2501 Noratlas.This engines are less complicated as you think with less parts in movement as a conventional engine...and the fuel econopmy is much better because able to run lean (blue flames at exhauts), this is not possible with the R3350's because overheats and detonation (always orange flames= rich)
@PorscheGTRSWeissach
@PorscheGTRSWeissach 5 лет назад
I saw this clip too with the crashed 2 silver Sea Furies! I also saw the start procedure is a bit different. Engine starts sounded like done with air pressure or a shell! Anyway, sounded different to this Fury here! ;-)
@msmeyersmd8
@msmeyersmd8 5 лет назад
leneanderthalien Thanks for that information. I had no idea these engines were manufactured that far after the War. As an engineer, I always thought the sleeve valve was a much more elegant solution. I like the sound of both but the Bristol sleeve valve is much smoother sounding. I hadn’t really noticed the blue “lean” flames before you mentioned it. That’s better from every engineering standpoint. Joke: Do you mean to say that the big P&W/Wright radials spewing fuel and flames on startup and take off isn’t as good? Obviously it less efficient. I grew up around them so I do love their sound. I flew in Twin Beeches with R-985s and loved them. Watching an R-4360, let alone 4 of them come to life while standing under the plane by the nose gear on a Guppy was a once in a lifetime experience for me. My Dad flew a few thousand hours in the B-36 so he gave me a lot of information on how the R-4360 functioned in practice. Most B-36s carried a pod that fit in the bomb bay that carried a brand new stored and pickled R-4360 so that an engine swap could occur almost anywhere with minimal down time in case of a problem. Just a quick engine swap. Back to the sleeve valve Bristol’s. Do you think the 14 cylinder Hercules engine was much more durable than the Centaurus and that, like the big American radials, the peak power output and development had been reached or exceeded, leaving the somewhat smaller engines to live longer lives in commercial and private use? I’ve not read a lot about the details of Bristol sleeve valve engine performance or longevity. I do remember reading that they had very high oil consumption. However, the American W-1320 and 3350 and the P&W-1340, 2800 and 4360s didn’t exactly sip oil. The tanks were gigantic. I always thought we would have moved beyond poppet valve technology in modern internal combustion engines by now. But they just won’t seem to die. Atkinson cycle, direct gasoline injection, variable compression, variable valve timing and other “gimmicks” seem to keep them alive. The rotary engine was a great idea but it was an oil burner and couldn’t pass emissions testing. Not that these are bad, but I had hoped automotive technology would have had a breakthrough improvement. We’re still using poppet valves. Wow. I love what they’re doing in Formula One but it seems like very complicated and expensive “gimmicks” that aren’t going to last 150,000+ miles on a daily driver. What do you think?

Irgendjemand Irgendwo I believe those were shell starts.i think I’ve seen a couple of those myself. The only pneumatic start radials I’m aware of are Russian/Soviet. Pneumatic works great in low temps in Russia vs electrical/batteries which can degrade a lot or freeze at super low temps. I think a lot of Russian planes used pneumatic brakes and flaps for the same reason. But I could certainly be incorrect. So don’t quote me. LOL.

Nice sight and sound. Too bad about the people talking and laughing during part of it, but I understand how difficult it can be to get clean audio at an air show. Thumbs up for a decent job.

Thankyou. The fact that I'm filming always seems to attract people making noise, even when it's not an airshow, as here, and I've tried to chose an apparently quiet spot!

The Centaurus engine has slide valves, as opposed to the more traditional poppet valves found on most ICE engines. It's a very interesting technology. An entire video could be done just on the differences between these two types of engines...

Hawker Fury 2 was a biplane powered by a 640 hp (477 kW) Rolls Royce Kestrel VI piston engine.[17] First flight 3 December 1936.[6] Total 112 built. - according to Wikipedia -This is not one of them - it is a Sea Fury!
@HighFlight
@HighFlight 5 лет назад
Yes, you're right, but it's not a true Sea Fury either, although that is what it looks like and was developed from. The Hawker Sea Fury was originally envisaged and designed as a land based RAF fighter to be called the Fury - after the earlier biplane fighter of the 1930s. A number of prototypes were constructed and flown before the RAF order was cancelled and development of the aircraft continued for the Royal Navy, with the name being changed to Sea Fury. The colour scheme of the aircraft seen here is that of one of these prototypes SR661, which was one of 2 prototypes for the Sea Fury, although that was not equipped with folding wings or other navalised features (save for a tail hook) at the time. After full development and delivery of the Sea Fury in service, the Iraqi government placed an order for aircraft for its Air Force. These aircraft did not need to be equipped for naval operations and the order was fulfilled by Hawkers converting some ex Royal Navy Sea Fury airframes as well as building completely new airframes without folding wings or any other naval features. The latter new build aircraft were officially called Hawker Fury ISS (ISS stands for Iraqi Single Seat) - unofficially they were called 'Baghdad Furys'. This airframe is actually one of these ex Iraqi Hawker Fury ISS, wearing the markings of one of the two Sea Fury prototypes.

This is NOT a Sea Fury !!! It is a fury prototype intended for the RAF...
@richuar
@richuar 3 года назад
@@Franky46Boy well technically this particular aircraft is a Fury as it was originally made for the Iraqi airforce. It is painted now though as one of the prototype Sea Fury aircraft complete with the words “Royal Navy” on it, so not an RAF plane nor marked as one. Either way though it’s an awesome beast!

How in the heck did they see were to go with that BEAUTIFUL FLYING MACHINE pitched so high in the air from the pilots point a VIEW.Amazing.
@HighFlight
@HighFlight 4 года назад
It's only pitched like that when on the ground taxiing as once the tails up the view improves and in flight the pitch adjusts for level flight. When taxiing that's why this and other warbirds swerve from side to side to give the pilots a clearer look of where they are going.
