Update 16/9/21 - AAIB report published detailing the cause of this accident - assets.publishing.service.gov...
UPDATE 24/1/21 - An article by the pilot, Eskil Amdal, entitled 'Crash Landing - Lessons from the Invincible accident' can be found in the February 2021 edition of 'Pilot' Magazine.
UPDATE 16/10/20 - A news story in 'Flypast' magazine November 2020 issue quotes passenger Dave Unwin - "It was a masterful display of flying by Eskil. The engine seized with the prop in fine pitch and the drag was phenomenal. To maintain an adequate flying speed of at least 140 knots, Eskil had to pitch the nose down by what felt like 50 degrees! While we were descending I was looking for a decent field, but the sink rate was probably around 4,000 feet per minute and our options were very limited. Eskil's landing was extremely skilful, but we were also very lucky, as once we'd slammed onto the field at about 130 knots we were just along for the ride. Thankfully we hit a tree with a wing and not the nose, and that flung us into a hedge, which also helped dissipate the energy."
UPDATE 12/8/20 - A news report featuring an interview with the rear seat occupant - Dave Unwin - and a description of the incident can be read at this website - (when the 'pay' option box appears click on the green 'x' top right corner to read in full for free!) - www.stamfordmercury.co.uk/new...
PILOT AND PASSENGER HAVE BOTH LEFT HOSPITAL - BEST WISHES FOR A SPEEDY AND FULL RECOVERY BOTH PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY.
Sadly, on 4th August 2020, the Pilot and Passenger in Duxford based Hawker Sea Fury, WG655, G-INVN, 'Invincible' sustained minor injuries when the aircraft is believed to have suffered a catastrophic engine failure in flight, forcing the pilot to make an immediate emergency landing in a field near Button End, Harston, Cambridgeshire.
The aircraft was severely damaged after it collided with a hedgerow, trees and a ditch bordering the edge of the field.
Fortunately, reports indicate that the pilot and passenger were able to extricate themselves from the wreckage and only sustained minor injuries, although they were taken to hospital for medical checks and treatment.
The aircraft had been on a local flight from its base at the Imperial War Museum Airfield at Duxford, from where it took off about 4.05pm and it came to grief shortly afterwards.
The aircraft is operated by The Norwegian Spitfire Foundation who have issued the following statement on their Website and Facebook page -
'Yesterday afternoon, Norwegian Spitfire Foundation operated Hawker Sea Fury T.20 G-INVN WG655 had to make a forced landing due to an engine failure. Chief pilot Eskil Amdal did a very good job getting the aircraft down. Eskil and his passenger suffered only minor injuries.'
This film shows the start up, taxi out and take off of the aircraft for this flight, followed by the aircraft wreckage in situ some hours later.
The following article gives an interesting and detailed insight from the pilot involved into flying and operating this aircraft - vintageaviationecho.com/sea-f...

Glad the crew only suffered minor injuries. Looking at the wreckage its close to a miracle. To both a speedy and full recovery! I hope WG655 gets a third chance and we can see it back in the air in a few years, after all it didnt look much better before her last rebuilt.

Not in any way to downplay this, and I'm genuinely glad the 2 on board are ok, but the aircraft isn't lost and indeed 30 years and 2 weeks ago it was in worse shape than this under similar circumstances. The Sea Fury is badly damaged for sure but absolutely rebuildable.

Eskil, you did a great job in preserving life there. I heard the aircraft around the Ickleton area shortly before this happened, I wish those on board not only a speedy recovery but many free beverages as they regale the many with their story of their very short final in a Sea Fury. Now, Norwegian Sea Fury restoration people at Duxford, do you need an experienced restoration engineer to come and assist you in putting the old lady straight again? I'm only up the road and have a spanner or two.

What's important is that no lives were lost. Yes it's very very sad the Fury was totalled, but at the end of the day it's just another aircraft, historic or not... the lives of the crew are more important. Amazed that there was no fire on impact. This will hopefully allow greater recovery of parts for reuse where possible in another airframe be it static or flyable.

First of all I’m really happy to hear that the crew are okay and out of hospital, that matters more than anything, it really does. Whether or not WG655 survives or not is something we’ll have to wait and see I suppose. But if one aircraft can, it’s her. Now like many of us so called armchair engineers and pilots etc, it doesn’t take much to know that her engine was definitely not right; on idle she sounded terrible and that continued right until takeoff. The trail of smoke from the left hand side of the engine wasn’t normal for sure. Whether it was mixture settings or piston issues I obviously don’t know, but there was something definitely amiss with that Centaurus engine. It will be good to read the report on this accident when released. Fingers crossed this mighty Sea Fury will return to the sky one day.

Well said, although it wasn't a Centaurus engine in this aircraft. It's a Pratt & Whitney R2800-CB3. It replaced the original Centaurus in winter 2017/18.

Good thing the Pilot and Crew are good and did not get hurt bad! I have read some of the comments about the engine not sounding right and the smoke on takeoff and most radial engines sound that way and have smoke puffing or powering out of the exhaust. The old radials always burned a little oil in the cylinders thus the smoke. I couldn't hear anything wrong with the engine and with this pilot having several hours in this old bird and being used to how she sounds and runs I would think he would have noticed something wrong. The run-up went well or he wouldn't have taken off. So only a thorough investigation of the engine and airframe will really tell us what happened.

It was difficult to discern, but was its power plant still the Bristol Centaurus sleeve-valve unit, or at it been replaced by an American (P&W or Wright) radial? Just wondering. What looked like rocker covers, may have actually been sparking plug covers, suggesting the -rarer- Bristol engine.

I have close to a thousand hours flight time in Sea Furies and in fact made the first post restoration flight on this very aircraft after it's last off feild landing. I have flown the Sea Fury with the Centaurus 18, Centaurus 175, R2800, R3350 and R4360. Of them all the Centaurus 18 is my favorite. It's only major issue is a lack of parts most notably sleeves. At the time of this latest accident this aircaft was fitted with our (Sanders) R2800 conversation. The trail of smoke on takeoff is normal for a poppet valve engine. This is due to a rich mixture at high power needed to keep the engine from detonating because of the hot exhaust valve. The Centaurus is a sleeve valve engine so it runs at a leaner mixture. For example the R3350 at 2800 RPM and 50 inches runs 380 GPH were the Centaurus (3270 cubic inch) runs 300 GPH. In the film nothing seems abnormal to me prior to takeoff. At the crash site the oil down the left side would indicate some sort of major issue with the engine. I did note that at the end of the clip you can see they are on the edge of a large plowed field one has to wonder why the pilot did not put her down there. However we do not know all the circumstances like altitude, speed ECT so we must reserve judgement!! I can say this he did not break the three rules of an off field landing. Don't stall, don't ever stall don't ever ever stall!!! And last we are all thankful that no one was seriously injured and yes it can be rebuilt to fly again!
@HighFlight
@HighFlight 3 года назад
Brian - Many thanks for your insight and for the detailed and interesting information. From my visit to the site I think that he did put it down on the field but it was difficult to determine exactly where as the ground was hard and compacted after weeks of no rain. I think the crop had been recently harvested and the field left unploughed and fairly regular, giving less ground braking friction on a thin layer of dry loose soil, than it might otherwise have had? I'm not sure though of the direction of approach although from the 'incident' marks and some minor debris it did appear to have been at an angle across the shorter span of a rectangle rather than using the longest run available. My perception was that he may have been into wind and had to clear a row of 20 feet high trees on the approach, but I may be wrong? Whatever, he did a great job of getting it down. The article linked below my pinned post sheds some light on the events from the passengers perspective (passenger is also a light aircraft pilot). I've posted a film of the flight immediately before which shows quite a bit of oil staining on the left side when the aircraft returns, which has evidently been cleaned off before it departs on this fateful flight - see here at 4'22" - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Oik4z4LjaLQ.html It would be interesting to know your thoughts on that? The most important thing is of course, as you say, that nobody was hurt - maybe another one for your superb outfit to rebuild again - let's hope that it can be done. Best wishes, Steve (High Flight)

I agree , in fact its hard to be sure if all cylinders are firing. My Dad worked in aviation for years , he used to tell me how on the 1830s in the DC3 , there could be 2 cyls with ex valves broken at the head to stem area , and the pilot had not even noticed anything amiss At times it was plain that the cyls had been having a free ride for 20 + hours. So they have to be pretty bad to be noticeable by ear at idle. Remember if an engine with 27 cyls , has only 1 or 2 out its still running on 25. To many fires per second for us to pick up with our ears if only a couple out. Even mag drop tests can be difficult . Most of the failed cyls were only discovered at the 50 hour leak down tests. And yet as you have already pointed out , engine sounded fine. Cheers

Another crash for this data plate, a real tragedy, but at least no one was badly injured, I know this aeroplane was re engine with an American radial which was said to be more reliable than the proper engine, not sure what engine it has, it is variously said to be a P&W R2800 or a R3350, but since its last crash in July 1990 it has had a complete rebuild, wonder if anyone radioed the pilot to inform him of the sudden emission of smoke on take off, it did not sound very healthy on the run up, but those american engines always sound rough, at least it was not an airframe failure, looking at the wreck they were lucky to escape, it looks very much like it did in the 1990 crash, although that crash completely severed the fuselage when it struck the only tree in the field. Thanks or the heads up Steve! Stay safe. Chris B.
@HighFlight
@HighFlight 3 года назад
Chris, It has the P&W R2800-CB3 engine. I filmed a solo flight that it made earlier in the day after it had a ground engine run a couple of hours before. I actually though it sounded a lot 'smoother' than usual, although I'm no expert, but yes those engines do sound rough. Comparing the earlier take-off footage with this it's evident that the emission plume from the port side is more intense and suddenly darker than it was earlier and has been when I've seen it fly before. After I had stopped filming and the aircraft was out of sight, the sound of the engine could still be heard from much further away than would normally be the case and was actually louder than when it had been nearer - maybe a strange anomaly due to wind direction and acoustics or perhaps a sign of something seriously amiss with the engine? Unfortunately I didn't have a radio with me to be able to answer whether he was advised of the emission plume. The circumstances are certainly very similar to the 1990 incident. Thank goodness the pilot and passenger are safe and relatively unhurt. Let's hope that they can salvage more than just the data plate? Steve.

Was the smoke on take off normal for this aero craft/ power unit ?
@HighFlight
@HighFlight 3 года назад
It did a solo flight earlier in the day (1225) where smoke can be seen from the engine on both sides, but more pronounced on the port side. When compared to this take off, the emissions from the port side appear far more pronounced and darker than the first flight, giving the impression that there may be excessive and unburnt oil being thrown out? The engine in this aircraft is a Pratt & Whitney R2800-CB3, whereas the original power plant for the type is a Bristol Centaurus Mk.18.

I fully consulted and advised them to 'tape it off' and 'why to do so' - treat as 'crime scene' , debris field, 'incident marks' danger from fuel and liquids, etc, which they did as I was there - plus I disturbed and touched nothing! Immediate vicinity was 'secure' when I left and ITV arrived. The fact that they were only a single 'double crewed' unit and had a 40 acre scene with multiple exit/entry points was another problem! Yes, it was, although it did have a Centaurus when it first arrived back in the UK with The Fighter Collection. I suspect that the Centaurus was always destined for another project?
@louisvanrijn3964
@louisvanrijn3964 3 года назад
I see a lot of questions concerning rebuilt. Generally, overseeing all the buckled fuselage panels, I consider building from scratch for 80-90% of the aircraft. If a one piece milled sparcap is severed or even bent, a complete wing rebuilt is a must. (where are the assembly jigs?) The part must be drawn in CAD , and milled from aviation material. In those years, every sheet metal part had a wooden pressblock for rubber pressing... where are they? Are any left? Rebuilding today means creating a very eleborate tool set too. Building such a complex aircraft with a small team takes many years. Flying takes an hour. Crashing it, or transfer it to a write-off, is a matter of seconds. Glider pilots know very well that any outlanding, how well prepared, poses a damage risk. Fact is that they own their aircraft, and bear their responsibilty for possible financial setback coupled to the their sport. You should have insured every flight of a warbird for say, 5000 pound a flight, paid by pilot or passenger. Over time that gives enough cash to assure proffesional rebuilt if anything goes wrong. And it went wrong, and it will go wrong, alass.
@HighFlight
@HighFlight 3 года назад
Thanks for making a lot of good and detailed points regarding any 'rebuild/repair' for this aircraft. I would think that inevitably it'll be all down to economics and whether there is the will and available parts and resources to do what in effect will probably be another 'replica' of the original. Sanders Aeronautics may be a good starting point, as they completed the last build following the 1990 accident. Alternatively the Aircraft Restoration Company may well attempt something - let's hope so!
