(born in 93) as a kid I thought Hayden was doing a great job portraying a mentally disturbed young adult going down the dark side with nobody giving him the help he needed. As a teen and college student I hopped onboard the hate train making fun of him and calling him a bad actor when really he was doing exactly what the script called for him to do. now I'm almost 30 and I'll still point out the prequels having a poor execution in the script, but the core storyline and the performances are very fitting for a setup to Star Wars Original Trilogy

I’m terms of the way he actually portrayed him I don’t think he did anything wrong. Maybe someone else fits the role better? But I honestly thought his portrayal was good, but just plagued with bad dialogue.

You should rewatch Anakin's response to Padmé telling him she's pregnant. His facial expressions there could write a book. He goes from surprise to fear to happiness in like 3 seconds. And people say he can't act... He's a great actor, but actors often have to rely on their directors a whole lot, and George Lucas wasn't the best director.

Agreed, the acting wasn't the problem, the direction was. Like I said above, I believe Hayden should've been in the Phantom Menace, with them skipping Anakin being a little boy. Give Hayden more time to flesh out the character.
@AlejandroGonzalez-fc4hj
@AlejandroGonzalez-fc4hj 2 года назад
I only thought he played Anakin perfectly once I saw the behind the scenes. If you watch footage of him on set then you start to realize that his delivery of the lines is actually really good. But they didn’t really use many of his good takes during the final cut of the film. You can even hear George tell him to over over deliver the lines sometimes.
@rycalamo2684
@rycalamo2684 2 года назад
I can't really agree, once you've seen the clone wars, movie Anakin looks like a joke, his delivery is so bad on so many lines, and on top of the poor writing makes a pretty good movie hard to watch, Matt Lanter is a much better Anakin imo, he's way more natural and likable
@joetheperformer
@joetheperformer 2 года назад
If you also incorporate Clone Wars Anakin, which happened roughly bt the Second movie (immature Anakin) and the Third movie (intense depression Anakin), it makes even more sense how Anakin was portrayed in the Prequels.
@sorrowandsufferin924

As someone who grew up with the prequels first and only saw the OT later, I feel like people who grew up with the OT had this feeling with it, a feeling the prequels didn't match. People had expectations from what's being told about Anakin and his character in the OT, but also from the way the Jedi are portrayed - and when the prequels didn't meet that, they were disappointed. They never caught on to how perfectly the prequels fit before the sequels. That Anakin isn't your average person, but a very specific boy in very specific circumstances, carrying burdens all his life and never really learning how to deal with them. That he was a boy who learned to carry the weight of the galaxy on his shoulders and did that spectacularily (he was perceived as a war hero by the end of the Clone Wars), but was never taught to handle his own burdens, and consequently collapsed beneath them and turned into Darth Vader (still not knowing how to handle his burdens. Vader was a man who only learned what it meant to love his son when that son was on the brink of death). Now, the prequels are very clear about that - but when you have a preconceived notion about who this Anakin Skywalker person was, someone you basically never saw on screen save a few moments in Return of the Jedi, you don't catch onto that. And that's in part also because Luke is not the type of Jedi portrayed in the prequels. Luke is hardly a Jedi at all by the standards of the order mere decades before him. He is very much what a galaxy in that state would need, but he's no Jedi by the standards of the order. Those two key differences - who Anakin Skywalker was, and who the Jedi were -, I think, ruined the prequels for a lot of people who went to see them with preconceived notions picked up in the Original Trilogy, and from what little clues it drops. Those who grew up with the prequels never encountered this issue - we saw Luke while already having known Anakin. Others saw Anakin while knowing Luke. It makes for two very different pictures. That we, the ones who grew up with the prequels, are now maturing to a point where we get to go to conventions such as that one and interact with "our actors" means there's a change in how the actors (and the characters) are perceived in the public eye, because we can now create images like the uproar at Hayden's (now almost iconic) line. Bring that line up once, twice more at key points, it will be almost as iconic as "I am your father" (maybe not, it doesn't carry quite the same weight as a revelation, but it will be iconic, I am telling you now).

Yeah, but then it's followed by, "Here, everything is so soft and smooth," Anakin says as he creepily caresses Padme's bare back. Great line followed by a terrible one. 😂 On a more serious note, he should've said how sand reminds him of his mom that the Jedi would never allow him to see, and his childhood living as a slave on Tatooine.
@Hybrid980
@Hybrid980 2 года назад
@@lelouchvibritannia4028 Even that line had it's use. Naboo and Tatooine are useful in the conversation because it highlights the vastly different backgrounds that Padme and Anakin come from, and the vastly different positions they are in now, they are very much star-crossed lovers. For Anakin, his love of Naboo makes perfect sense, it is the antithesis to the harsh and desolate nature of Tatooine, witnessing something like that would not only be a culture shock, but would be extremely pleasant to witness after living in such a place as a young child.

Hayden’s facial expressions in RotS are particularly great, especially the glare he did at the camera before killing Wat Tambor. The delivery of the “I HATE YOU.” Was excellent, I always feel the rage behind it, it’s guttural, and feels genuine, he practically spat the words out, just like someone who was lividly enraged. As someone who had anger management issues as a kid, that line and the behaviour he was able to convey were perfect. He was able to show that despite the excruciating agony he was in, he only had his eyes and attention on Obi Wan, even as he combusted. Being able to convey livid rage, despite being cut up and frying on volcanic rocks is phenomenal.

I’m seeing a lot of prequels vs. OT in the comments and I will propose this: The prequels showed more context to the deeper machinations of government and conspiracy while the OT had a masterful concept and told a great father/son redemption story. Each is fantastic in their own right and I don’t think there’s a right answer. It’s just about what Star Wars means to you and what parts of the universe most resonate with you. For some, it’s watching a boy’s internal struggles destroy everything he fought so hard for. How he was the great unifier turned traitor due to manipulation and neglect. For others, it’s about the wholesome reunion and redemption of a family. How one boy’s optimistic persistence broke through to a father that had lost himself. For none, it’s about some random junker girl who became a master on her own lol.
@BreMue

Could have been about a story of redemption for someone in a cycle of abuse but I think they kinda cheapened it IMO🤷🏼‍♀️
@BoofKing419_68
@BoofKing419_68 2 года назад
@@BreMue I agree. It could’ve been a lot of things though. They kinda just made a bunk version of the OT with some special twists that further complicated the narrative. It was disappointing to see that with all of the creative genius at Disney and a George Lucas book of concepts that they still couldn’t produce something magical. It was cool! There were neat planets, cool abilities, but the plot was rough and they went too far with concepts like “Lightspeed skipping” and the telepathy between Rey and Ben being a way for them to literally warp objects between each other. Again, really really cool! Just an antithesis to existing cannon. I’m not a purist, but I do like continuity. Don’t take this as me saying the Disney trilogy is hot garbage or anything. I just like to view it as a SW concept trilogy separate from the canonical universe. When you apply it to what already exists, I have to rank it at the bottom. Force Awakens was the best one by far and then it just got crazy.

Yes, he did a fantastic job. it always hurt me when i found out 'people' hated on him. watching it as a teen, i loved it. i loved how he portrayed anakin skywalker. he had this unique vibes w/c was only his. and i actually felt the emotions, the subtleness of them. from the way he stands, his eyes, the tone of his voice, and the way his body moves. he gave it so much depth. and when it comes to 'bad dialogues', as asian, i'm kind of use to those types of dialogues. because most movies/drama from here could come out as too poetic or melodramatic for westerners, but for us, they dont. The Prequels was the Star Wars I grew up with so it's really close to my heart. it's a genuine emotional story, too, the kind that i don't really see nowadays.

Happy birthday to me AND Star Wars! Theory watching you this past year has taken my love for Star Wars to a level I didn't think possible even more than my birthday in 1977, watching a movie that would greatly influence my life in addition to the awe and wonder I felt leaving the theater that day. I just joined the channel and Thursday night will be my first live watch party for the Kenobi premier. This is my birthday gift to me. I can't wait!!!

It’s crazy how now the idea of Anakin saying he didn’t like sand is a lot more understood as to why Anakin dislikes sand *due to it representing his rough childhood on Tatooine*. Shows that Hayden played Anakin perfectly and understood the character more than we may have known at the time. I’m glad Hayden is back and I’m happy he didn’t let the scrutiny break him as a person.

Went for a cleaning at my dentist 2 days ago, he’s a huge starwars fan with merch all over his office. For years I kept telling him about you and he tells me he ran into you at that comic con here in Chicago. Said you were kinda lost and he helped you find the way to the main entrance. Cool story, we both love your vids. Thank you for what you do, I always created and still create my own fictions in my head and imagine myself as a main character. Ty bro honestly

Idk of he has any social media but we should share this a bunch to get Hayden to do a react video to that video. I'd love it if he could do a podcast with SWT.

Idk why but seeing Hayden again almost brings a tear of joy to my eye. I never felt that he deserved all that hate that he had gotten like at all! He is actually really good in other movies but no one could seem to see past the whiny “I hate sand! It’s rough, course and gets everywhere” thing which is tremendous saddening because he deserved so much more. And people don’t even understand why he hated sand so much either! For those who didn’t understand sand was an allegory for other stuff in his life. For example: he hated sand because where he was raised as a slave was full of sand the worst parts of his life where on a planet full of sand, his mom died on that sandy planet to Tusken Raiders aka Sand People. Like the worst aspects of his life where involved with sand that’s why he hated. He grew up with nothing but sand and everytime he was around it he was reminded of all the bad he had to endure. So, he wasn’t just saying he hated sand to make an edgy sand remark it was meaning behind it but no one even looked past what he said.

Dude endured so much slander from shitty fans. I'm so happy he's still very much proud of his work in star wars. I love so many prequel actors lol. Temura as jango. Ian as palpatine. Liam as Qui Gon

My hope for Hayden is not only for anything he does in Kenobi or SW moving forward ... but with the grief he had to deal with (and some of that 100% was on the dialog writtten for him in the movies) years ago ..... my hope is he gets the opposite from the fanbase now ... "hey ... we REALLY missed you as Anakin and are so glad you're back " before I was thinking about something .... what if we get to see Vader's dreams where Anakin is still alive (so to speak) and still fighting ..... what if we get to even at least hear from Padme and more of Anakin and Padme together .... maybe even a sort of dream/nightmare you talked about in another recent video about have a dream from Obi-wa where him and Anakin are having a great time together ... then Anakin suddenly bursts into flames turning it into a nightmare ..... i mean that SORT OF dream from Vader and have Anakin and Padme so happy together ... then suddenly something happens to Padme and it really adds to Vader's pain and pushes him further into the dark side My CONFUSION has always been .... WHY does Vader (I mean VADER) care about Padme ... why does Vader want to bring Padme back? ... that in my mind is Anakin still being "alive" in Vader ..... at least up to a point

As a fatherless kid who loves the preborn, I think Hayden was spot on in the prequels. Consider how hard he works. Childhood actor to working on a an actual farm. He's uncorrupted by Hollywood.

To your comment of "grown up". From an OG fan, watched every new major release, made my kids watch the rerelease of the updated original trilogy. I believe I'm not "grown up". I wait in great anticipation for Kenobi. I will always be a Star Wars fanboy. Your comment made me laugh. Thanks for a bright spot in my day.

No idea why people hates him as anakin. He was the best. As a kid back in the early 2000s, these movies made a huge impact in my childhood, and seeing them back, and especially Hayden being back, being such a huge thing, it’s confusing how people hates him. Ewan played obi-wan brilliantly.

yeah the hate on hayden was so undeserved. In aotc he portrays a perfect angsty young adult dealing with emotions and stuff, and in rots bro he was fantastic imo. I remember watching rots almost every day in the summers when I was young, it was just too good.

I fucking love the prequel series. Revenge of the sith is my favourite. After watching the clone wars TV series and then going to to RTS makes it even more emotional, and then those final scenes on Mustafar... Masterpiece in my eyes.
