The discovery of Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1 in C Major in 1961 (almost exactly two centuries after it was composed) has been called “the single greatest musicological discovery since the Second World War”. The Concerto gives us an insight into the importance and maturity of Haydn’s early compositions. This piece was composed around 1761-65 for longtime friend Joseph Franz Weigl, the then principal cellist of Prince Nicolaus’s Esterházy Orchestra. Haydn's long and productive career spanned from the end of the Baroque Era to the onset of the Romantic. Famed for his incomparable contribution to the development of the symphony and string quartet, Haydn also composed an enormous amount of music in other genres, including sacred choral music.
