I've kept my phone on silent for eight years now, only having it on ring if I'm expecting a call.

Long long before cellphones, I was at a Beethoven piano performance and the amount of fecking digital watches that beeped once an hour, unbelievable...

I was on a jazz concert couple years ago and the band played some rhythm changes tune. In the middle of a guitar solo a phone rang. The guitarist started to improvise (brilliantly) on the ringer melody. The person with the phone was embarrassed enough. During the concert, the guitarist would bring up the theme couple more times to an amusement of the audience. Now that was a classy reaction!

"Don't answer, please" *DESTROYED IN SECONDS*

In my experience, when a cellphone goes off at an inappropriate time, the ringtone is almost always Bad to the Bone

Haydn probably would have made a joke about it or mocked the person in a witty way. Beethoven would have smashed the phone to bits and/or thrown an instrument at the person's head.

For the 2,400 who gave this a thumbs down, you need to understand that the reason people go to a classical concert is the magic. It's an escape into a world of beauty and art and virtuosity that you just don't experience outside of the auditorium, and a ringtone completely ruins it for everybody. The audience members pay good money to attend. The musicians work hard to prepare. And some knucklehead forgets to silence his phone and BOOM!!! the magic is gone. Hard to get it back. So I can understand how the man was upset and waited until the ringing stopped. He wasn't being rude. He was reacting to the rudeness.

I was at Carnegie watching Yo-Yo ma and Emanuel Axe perform and one of the ushers ON STAGE was on their phone basically the whole time and towards the end, it went off. I’ve never seen someone so unappreciative for an opportunity to be payed to sit on stage at Carnegie hall.

At my school's spring concert, someone let his 5 year old listen to Let it Go in the middle of a performance without headphones. The song ended, and only then he noticed it was up full blast.

As a musician this REALLY pisses me off. It's not easy at all to keep time and melody with 80 other musicians when other music totally unrelated is playing. These people have been preparing probably for weeks, working hard to give this concert of beautiful music, and the folks in the audience paid their money to see it. So inconsiderate. You can live without being attached to your phone for just ONE hour.

Man, I just had one of my biggest concerts last night, and there was a cell phone going off at one of the most quiet parts of the piece. I feel.

Literally, this ruin the concert. That is not a stadium with a trash metal band where the power of the sound is high enough to permeate your ass. It is not about that musicians can´t start over. Indeed they did it. The problem is that their mood and concentration are no longer the same.

I thought it was a modern piece entitled "haydn killed by cell phone" quite disappointed.

This is the reason why there is a reminder to silence cell phones during concerts and important events

I've been going to concerts since I was 12 (even played a few! Well, more recitals than concerts, but still!), and at this point, I've seen it all. I've seen the 300-pound man snoring away two rows behind me, or the 20-year-old playing video games on mute with a super bright screen in the row in front of me (it also didn't help that he was dressed for a baseball game), or the countless people who's "whispered conversations" were loud enough to hear 20 seats away. And yes, I've also seen the cellphone ring, and I was fortunate enough to hear it not in the middle of a piece, but at the end of that most serene second movement of Ravel's Piano Concerto just as it came to a close. I was so relaxed... And as upset as I was, I can only imagine how the artists felt, those talented people who spent so many hours working hard to put on their best performance!

Years ago when I was a freshman in high school, we were having an assembly about suicide prevention after a student from a neighboring district killed herself. During the assembly, a student's phone in the front row went off with the song "Pants on the Ground" by Larry Platt from his American Idol audition. The girl was escorted out by the vice principal. I had to hold in my laughter for the rest of the assembly.

when this happens at my concerts i also get pretty fucking annoyed. you have to understand that by having your phone ringing in the middle of a song playing you are destroying a unique moment. that's not how music should be treated, you have to respect both musicians and the music itself. just turn your goddamn cellphones off.

Once I had been in such a situation, my cellphone was switched off but I didn’t know that the alarmclock is still working. Such a shameful situation, because it was a record and I knew the musicians. I was inviting them on a drink afterwards.

I totally agree with him. There’s a special property of music that takes the listener to a journey of emotions but a distraction such as a cellphone takes you from a magical place in your mind back into the world that you live in and just ruins the experience.
