the Hazara-Pashtun conflict depicted by Khalid Hosseini in the Kite runner has a majo flaw that nobody really is talking about. The Kite Runner was published in 2003 and soon became a best seller and was translated to many languages. Its setting is Afghanistan and the Hosseini was born in Kabul. It depicts a tale of two boys who are friends but world apart in their social status. This video will explain the background to the conflict and how the novel fails to depict them fairly.

More than 15 millions in Afghanistan. Only in Kabul especially in west park of Kabul living around 2-3 millions Hazaras. Cities like Mazar and Herat 30-40% population are Hazaras. Bamyan around 95 % are Hazara. In Qandahar and Lashkargah are also enough Hazara maybe 5-10%. In Ghazni more than 60-70% Are Hazara. Also in Panjsher living 5-10% Hazara ( Dara Hazara district ). Hazara people are represented all over the country. In Jalalabad is unknown maybe up to 5%

He gets the servant pregnant behind Ali’s back. He fathers Hassan but never looks after him in the same he looks after Amir. He is pompous. He is always right. He is described as larger than life. His self righteousness is pretty annoying. I like characters who have some humility too.

I believe hosseini didn't paint that image of Hazaras intentionally, it was for the sake of the story that he made Hassan submissive, and also because of his lake of knowledge of Hazaras (I know he calls himself Afghan, but he didn't grow up among them). As a Hazara, there were some things which frustrated me. Most of the Hazaras in this novel are either a cripple, a degenerate woman who left her own son and ran away, or servants, groveling to the pashtuns, who are all rich and beautiful, and educated (being diplomats, doctors, and lawyers and judges). My great-grandfathers lived in Kabul, but neither they nor their relatives had to clean other people's bathrooms to earn their livelihood. And not all of the pashtuns lived that priviledged life that is depicted (You can understand how many of these educated people actually were in Afghanistan once the soviets invaded and they scuttled abroad, and the country fell into the hands of radical clerics. If the country really belonged to such educated population, where are they now to defend the country for which they happily persecuted other ethnic groups?). In short, I felt like Hazaras were resembling less Hazaras, but the African Americans in the 19 century before emancipation.

For sure, Hosseini was writing for an American audience so he needed to simplify things. Thanks for the very thoughtful comment.

A small correction: the CIA did not create the Taliban or Al Qaeda, it (alongside other countries) helped local and foreign mujahedeen groups who ended up taking power in 1992. Some of those mujahedeen would later form the Taliban, and while Bin Laden did benefit from CIA help while he was in Afghanistan (the extent of which is disputed), Al Qaeda was created a while after the Soviet Withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Pashtuns are not from pakistan but from whole region between Helman/Farah all the way to Sulaiman mountains and river Indus/sind. Pashtun heart land is Greater Kandahar region. There is no country but Afghanistan for Pashtun unlike Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Tukmenistan for their groups. Pakistan is largely Punjabi and Sindhi and pashtun form less than 20%. Historically Afghan is persian name for Pashtun, and now this name is contention when labelling non-pashtuns are Afghans, as non-pashtuns wish to either keep their ethnic name or not have Afghan label as it historically connects to Pashtun.

Khalid Hossaini most likely a Shia from his last name Hosaini is Shia last name so Khalid Hosaini was a biased depiction of Hazar as victims also making Pashtun look bad. Shia are mostly pro homosexuality & liberal & LGBTQ IS Mostly looked down by Pashtun & rapping guys done in northern area not by Pashtun in south. But we need all Afghan to stop discriminating & hating each other based on ethnic differences

@armycarat647

No shia are not liberal at all. Look at Iran what they do to women not wearing hijab. Accept that Pashtuns are like the white people in america, and hazaras like african americans. Hazara were always victims of ignorant pashtuns who thought they are better and not all Hazaras are shia, many of them are sunni and they live along with the Tajiks peacefuly. You guys, the pashtun are pro terrorism, pro Talib..so the downfall of Afghanistan is your fault. Y'all have superiority complexity and think you are the innocent ones but in reality y'all are evil, ofc not all of you, but most of you
@starfthegreat
@starfthegreat 3 года назад
I'm a Lebanese Shia, and I can see Hosseini's characterization of Hazara's as fitting into anti-Shia tropes that are unfortunately prevalent in many parts of the Islamic World. Shias are represented as being flat characters like you said, either by being submissive (an idea that has even seeped its way into academia) or by being blindly loyal to their religious and political leaders.
@Fiction_Beast

Thank you for elaborating this issue. I think Hosseini was trying to show his sympathies with the Hazaras so he created them as sumbissive and "good" but flat characters.

that map for language is wrong, in Herat and kuduz and other areas there's pashtuns speakers, In Herat population is 50% pashtuns speakers and in kunduz there's over 50% pashtun speakers also other areas, that map is always used by ethnic nationalist to show there's no pashtuns outside southern and eastern Afghanistan when in reality there's about 2 millions of pashtuns in western and northern afghanistan

I'm not sure two individuals are meant to be 100% representative of the whole of their race. If you pull somebody out of the crowd at random, he's likely to be a statistical outlier in one way or another.
@Fiction_Beast
@Fiction_Beast 2 года назад
that's a good point. I agree literature as a field tend to tell the stories of the outliers or outsiders. But my argument is that the author has a responsiblity to depict his characters as unbaised as possible. in other words, let the characters speak for themselves rather than making them fit or break the stereotypes. This was Hosseini's debut so I guess he did a decent job but failed in some way which i discussed in the video.
