Memory time: My family was dirt poor and as a kid i remember seeing kids playing on their gameboys and watching kids play pokemon, but we could never afford one. In fourth grade (2000-2001), the pokemon gold and silver games were coming out and its all I asked for for christmas. My parents and grandmother pitched in together to be able to afford to buy me a gameboy color (one of the clear purple ones) and a copy of pokemon gold. It was the most excited and happiest gift I ever got. I remember my grandmother sitting down with me and wanted me to show her how to play it. Her starter was chikorita and she was as excited as I was the first time I ever played pokemon and caught my first pokemon. So much so that she ended up saving up and buying herself a gameboy and silver version to play with me so we had both version to trade and play. Her favorite pokemon was sodowoodo. When she passed, she left me her gameboy and her pokemon silver game. Her sodowoodo that she had on her party was named after me and level 100. Very personal and still a tough memory to think about but also one of my happiest memories of my grandma and playing pokemon. To this day gen 2 is my favorite generation. Thought since, you're taking a trip down memory lane, I'd share mine as well. Amazing how many memories a simple game can bring out.

When I first started high school, I told my grandmother that I'd started trying my hand at competitive Pokemon. Every so often, she'd ask how my quest was going, and I'd try to explain it to her in a way she understood. Eventually, I'd start sending her cool videos, pictures and articles that I'd find about it, and sometimes she'd send me stuff. It warmed my heart seeing her slowly but surely understanding my new hobby.

Man the memory... The first time I played Pokémon was a English ROM. here in Italy the anime arrived way before the GB game so the only way to play was to use a ROM in a foreign language and no one at that time could understand English. Every single step forward was a matter of trial and error and stuff like HM and TM means nothing to us, so the first dude that figured out how to use cut and battle LT surge was a superstar at school!

Fun personal Drowzee fact: Drowzee was the first pokemon I ever encountered as a shiny, outside of mandatory red Gyarados. In gen 2, the grass by Goldenrod, I stumbled across a purple Drowzee. Caught it because it looked really cool, but wasn't sure if the evolved form would look as good so used the old pokemon cloning glitch of box swapping to duplicate the Drowzee and evolve the duplicate. Decided shiny Hypno wasn't as cool looking so stuck with purple Drowzee. While not my favourite pokemon outright, I will always have a special fondness for Drowzee for being the first proper shiny I ever found.

A rumour I heard when I was a kid was that the shiny stone turned a pokemon into a shiny. So I ended up saving it for a legendary (can't remember what), but was disappointed when it didn't work. I assumed it was because legendaries were too rare and it would be unfair. Then I heard someone say "then I used the shiny stone on my togetic" and i was very confused as to why he'd waste it like that. Shiny togetic didn't even look that good.

OK so, A Bizarre challenge I came up with: Pokemon Emerald With only a Skitty / Delcatty, but you can only use ASSIST. (This means you can have other Pokémon with Powerful moves that Delcatty can take from. You can use Skitty If you want for the extra challenge, but I'm hoping this would be an interesting run since you'll have Pokémon that will not be in battle, but this also means you'll have a general idea of what your move pool is unlike a Metronome run.) I think you can do this run on Pokémon Pearl and Platinum as well, but I don't know if there's an Assister in Heart Gold / Soul Silver.

@jaqmes the video Viking save in front of a PC in GSC. Deposit Pokemon you want to clone. Go to Change Box. When it starts to save, turn the game off. The way it works is Box data is saved before the other data like party and location. It may take a couple tries to get the timing right. You can do a variant of it at the beginning of the game. Start a file and save before picking your starter. Play, wothout any saving, to when you get PokeBalls. Catch a Pokemon. Deposit your starter holding a Ball and do the Box Change and turn off maneuver (with your last actual save having still been right before grabbing your starter). When you start back up, pick a different starter, go to Cherrygrove, withdraw Starter 1, take the ball, catch a mon, and repeat the process with the 2 starters being deposited. Pick the third on reset, and you'll have all three (though when you get the PokeDex, you'll be missing the first two's data). You can also use this kind of thing for spending coins (clone the Pokemon or a Pokemon holding the TM and reset to right before the coins were spent), Rare Candies (save, use the candies, use glitch, you've given levels and gave reset the candies in your bag), getting all the Bug Catching Contest mon in one day, etc)

I remember when someone (a friend, but I forget who) got me my first Pokémon game for my birthday, I was ecstatic that it was Blue version and not Red version. I had mentioned multiple times that if I were to play Pokémon, I wanted Blue instead of Red because everyone else I knew wanted Red because it had Charizard on it. I always thought Charizard was overrated, so to be different, I said I wanted Blue. The friend who gave it to me even included a link cable, and when I asked what it was for, he told me it'd make me more popular. As soon as the school year started (I have a summer birthday), I learned how right he was: as the only one with Blue version on a playground of Red version players, _everyone_ wanted to trade with me.

So the rumor that always seemed to circulate was the "trick" to "guarantee" a catch, usually some variation of either pressing, spamming, holding etc the B button. I think the first version I heard was specifically "use a Great ball and hold down and B". I also heard in Diamond and Pearl, that if you go down the left side of the path in Solaceon town but do it while on your bike and spinning on each tile, you could open a portal that let you catch any legendary. Of course, I never did it "fast enough" to open the portal lol

Great Ball then Down+B was supposed to turn a great ball into a master ball. To this day, despite everything I know about pokemon, I still feel like great balls have a better catch rate than ultra balls lol. The other one was mashing or holding down A would guarantee a catch also. Obviously didn't work but also, to this day, I hold down A when a ball is thrown. Superstitious behaviors are hard to kick.

“I never figured out how to swim.” Times like these remind me of how God tier my parents were. Swimming and riding your bike takes some learning. They taught me how to ride a bike themself but they decided to sign me up for swimming classes in Germany. I don’t remember much about it minus the final “test”. If I was to pass I had to swim 3 circles around the pool. I had to stay by the walls. I was 6 at the time so the pool was huge to me. My arms went numb afterwards. It was brutal! I knew if I failed I’d have to do it again the next day so I persevered. Nowadays I’m not just land locked I’m several hundred miles away from the nearest body of water. Loved hearing all your memories with these original games! You're only a year older than me, but my first game was Pokemon Gold because my parents wouldn't let me have any video games until I was 7. I had a lot of similar memories though, and listening to you ramble about yours really brought some back for me as well. Take it easy this week, you deserve it, and happy birthday! my main memories of pokemon rumours circulated from the internet like finding 50 legendaries at the bottom of chargestone cave lol, the first pokemon games i ever played were diamond/pearl since thats what my family could afford back then as i have another sibling. The games were super fun and the mystery of arceus caused lots of rumours around my school on how you could get it. I still love and enjoy pokemon to this day and the rom hacks allow us to keep enjoying them today.

I definitely had to do this in one of the early games. I just don’t remember which one lol. I think it was Ruby and Sapphire because I remember it took me days to realize you can walk “under” the cycling road thing (where you battle your Rival on your way to Mauville). I thought it was a wall and never attempted to even pass that way. You can only imagine my reaction when I managed to successful progress. 💀

I played religiously till gen 3 probably 2006 ish. Then My 20's happened, had a couple kids and now im watching your videos with them! Thank you for helping spread the joy! Thanks so much for sharing your stories, and Happy Birthday! Pokemon is super nostalgic to me too. Even though Pokemon Blue was my first video game I ever played, I honestly have the most nostalgia for gen 4, mostly because I got it for Christmas when it was still new. None of the other kids at my school played pokemon though, so that left only me and my older (we were ten years apart. I was only seven) brother. We traded and battled, and the most memorable of the pokemon he gave to me was a Gible. I still have that same Garchomp to this day. I love going back to the first generation of Pokemon, but to this day gen 4 mons are still my favorites.

Happy birthday, dude! We definitely grew up in similar eras. I remember a similar lvl 100 Mewtwo rumor on the playground. I also remember a similar one about being let in to an area behind Bill’s house to catch special mons. One big one I heard in gen 3 was that you could get a special acro bike to jump the fence to get into the grass behind the daycare in Ruby and Sapphire to catch Deoxys. Lol. I never believed that, but I remember hearing about it vividly. 😂

First Pokemon Memories: I was a young teen back when Red/Blue came out. I was sick as a dog the night I first stared playing Blue on my Super Gameboy on my SNES. What I remember the most is the very beginning when Professor Oak is introducing the game and ended with that line: "A world of dreams and adventures with Pokemon awaits! Let's go!" I was already an RPG player back then but I hadn't really played one that let your build your team from scratch before. Final Fantasy 4 and FF6 this is not - it is a more personal journey with lower stakes and it really did feel like going on a personal adventure. No mad clowns trying to take over the world in Pokemon Blue! I don't really remember my endgame team anymore but I know for sure it featured Blastoise and the three legendary birds. I didn't get too lost because I had the Nintendo Power Player's guide. I still have that book on my shelf and it is still mostly holding together. XD Anyway, Pokemon was a game that invited me to have my very own adventure and that's what I'll always think of when recalling the series earlier days and what I really want out of the franchise.

I think my favorite schoolyard rumor was actually something I found online when I was playing Emerald. Gen 3 was the first time I was able to actually play a pokemon game, despite being a fan since the show started. I wasn't allowed to buy a Game Boy when it came out, and I kinda had to fight my parents to allow me to use birthday money on a Game Boy Advance SP. Regardless, I read about a secret pokemon you could only obtain from breeding Jirachi and Deoxys. I'm pretty sure I had neither, but I managed to obtain one of them while a friend had the other. Somehow I was able to convince a friend to let me borrow the other pokemon in the pair. Obviously no special egg came from them. But the real funny part of this story? I'm 99% sure I never gave my friend their mythical psychic type back.

My playground rumor was around 5th grade. Someone kept saying that if you had a full national pokedex BEFORE talking to the Luminose ghost girl, she would give a shiny mewtwo. I didn’t believe them, but people made fun of me for that. I still bring it up to my friends every now and then when it crosses my mind.

I always stick around for your outros, my dude. Count me in! I don't think I can choose a favorite memory, but one that comes to mind is the first time that I realized my Blastoise could learn both Earthquake and Ice Beam. Strength on the truck for mew, my daycare poke was a Rattata. I spent an entire afternoon emotionally compromised because I couldn't find the tree next to cerulean. Ahh childhood. Spent so long searching that I DID have flash. Surprised you didn't have a story about getting KOd by the dugtrio. My battle story is just raising a Charizard and getting frozen solid in victory road... Literally no backup plan.
@Nosferatu62820
@Nosferatu62820 2 года назад
I have always been a pragmatic pokemon player and most of the time, my core looks the same. The fire starter, a water type, the early route bird, a grass type, an electric type and most of the time, a cool pokemon I find early like Mankey, Nidoran or Ralts. But in my many years of playing Pokemon, I have had some odd choices, for me at least, to complete my main team. A Jynx in one of my Silver runs, a Dusclops in Ruby, a Mantine in a Fire red nuzlocke. One of them has been an Hypno in my Yellow team. I can’t really remember why this pokemon, which I don’t really like or care about, was added to my squad but here it was. This run won’t be as nostalgic as MDB’s but this might help me remember why my 8 years old self thought this was a cool idea. Drowzee is built to have an easy time in this game. It’s a Psychic type so a pokemon with the best typing in this generation, with a great special allowing it to hit hard and be quite sturdy against some of the usual main offenders in this kind of run (Misty, Lorelei). Besides, it’s not an amazing pokemon but 48 in attack is usable (as always, if Voltorb and its meager 30 could pummel through Rhydon, no reason why Drowzee wouldn’t be able to make a good use of its attack) and its lack of speed shouldn’t be a problem because of the over leveling. On top of that, its movepool is great. Well, great is hyperbolic but when your pokemon have access to a powerful stab, Psychic, resisted by nothing but the Psychic type and Body Slam which is one of my favorite Gen I move (easy to get, strong, physical, 30% chance to paralyse) and a great complementary option to the special move, you know you will have an easy time. If you add Hypnosis into the mix, this run is over before its start because sleep is broken in Gen I. I might even go for Dream Eater instead of Psychic for the pokemon to stay “in character” (it also gives it a way to recover on a stronger attack with more PP). Finally, I can see Meditate being an option, working alongside both Body Slam and Hypnosis. The rest of the options would be to go for a fighting type move or Substitute but I don’t think I’d need to. As always, a pokemon with only a normal type attack which will have to go against two rock types with high defense. I’ll never like the start of a Gen I run I suppose… After getting Confusion, I went to fight Misty. I teached Drowzee Mega Punch for Starmie but I learnt Headbutt during the fight. Two were enough to beat Starmie, despite the X defend used. The rest of the run was basically uneventful. The only issue has been PP management, because Hypnosis isn’t accurate and I needed it to use Dream Eater. I pummelled through every major fight in the game, including the Elite 4, with a mix of Dream Eater and +6 Body Slam. Agatha was the only obstacle thanks to her fast Gengar with Confuse Ray and Toxic. I would have lost if it were not for Dream Eater life recovery. The run was completed at level 73 with Hypnosis, Dream Eater, Body Slam and Meditate as my moveset. Easy.

My first memories of Pokémon were back in 2001 playing Crystal version. Listening to the music and playing through it again as an adult brings me back to my childhood and gives me a feeling of being carefree, doing whatever I want, and going on an adventure. I have a lot of nostalgia for gen 2 and Crystal is my favorite Pokémon game. Johto felt like such a quaint, small-town, homey place, and in a way, it feels like my childhood home. Good times, good memories.

Hi MDB, you got me feeling nostalgic so I'm gonna write some stories. I'm one of those as old as you and also have a beard and started with yellow. But no internet. I remember having to hand over my Gameboy to my brother to get through my moon and rock tunnel. I remember on rival fival I was stuck forever and had to evolve my pidgetto to pidgeot. On one of many runs, I boxed Pikachu and would get a nidoran, and use that until it got horn drill as nidoking. Zapdos was the bird to get and it could rip apart the elite 4. The safari zone was a nightmare, I couldn't manage it easily, and was wandering about a bunch. I always wanted a chansey but could never catch one. I never even see a dratini. Hitmonlee gang all the way. I think I just liked Bruce Lee as an action star whereas in my mind then I hadn't really seen Jackie Chan. Every moveset was 4 stab moves of possible. Charizard was ember, fire spin, flamethrower, fire blast. Zapdos was thundershock, thunderbolt, thunder, drill peck. When one of my friends got Pokémon gold, I went crazy and stayed up all night for the first time ever just exploring johto. It was a completed save and didn't have anything to do. But I was sold. I got crystal whenever that appeared. School yard rumour that stands out is getting jirachi on 100 space station launches in mossdeep city. I watched a big chunk of twitch plays Pokémon which was the origin of lord helix. I always thought that was why you chose the helix fossil. My favourite Pokémon is tyranitar. Because in pokemon colleseum it was the secret hyped Pokémon and I never saw one in all my years playing Pokémon. The concept of a pseudo legendary was lost to me. Maybe it was family being a late internet adopter. I would always lose to Blue to begin with. I never figured out the Eevee rival evolution patterns. I would grind out runs of the e4 to get my first level 100, zapdos. But I remember seeing what I learned later to be some missingno nonsense of a guy on a ferry to France having a level 140 blastoise. Again my child mind was blown. I think that's it, and you go have fun with the videos. I think having fun is all that anyone can ask for.

Happy birthday, MDB! I've only been watching your content since early 2020, but I still appreciate it so much! I don't have too many memories of playing Red/Blue since I was very young when I started playing them. Little things like finding a Pikachu in Viridian forest and being Shook, but not having pokeballs. I remember going back and hunting forever to find another one. A highlight was when I caught a cubone for the first time in Yellow and being so upset over the fact all cubones wore their mothers' skulls. I think I had a whole box filled with nothing but Cubone so I could take care of them. Oh, I was also a Bulba Boy growing up lol.

I love the stories and yes I did zubat vs zubat it was agony. E1. I believed some of the ways to get new from the truck but I never acted on it because I felt a large attachment to my Raticate that I was like it's not worth it E2. I think I'm gonna watch that birthday stream E3. It took me forever to get the key card at silph co. However I did beat the trainers that you could fight even using the teleporter but it took me more time to figure out what teleporters go where and to what floor since I was one of the kids that wanted to be like I need to understand this area and teleporters and then used the key card to open every door E4. Getting into the Blaine's gym was a pain where I trained everything but my level 60ish Golduck and 67 Raticate. I remember it was 67 because I remember being in the truck with my father when I finally found the basement of the old mansion E5. I watch the challenges not for the optimal way but more for the typically funny commentary and the strategy as well as the helix fossil gag as well as watching it all to try to confirm if my guesses on who will brick wall you will be accurate E6. I also remember brute forcing the elite four with two way over leveled pokemon 2 legendaries (articuno and zapdos) and two level 40s btw the obvious over leveled pokemon were Raticate over level 90 and Golduck in the 80s. I also remember when I beat the final rival fight since I picked squirtle but won just before me and my brother had to leave to go to mum's. I saved that about 30 times not even gonna lie E7. I will say thank you for sharing your memories with this video it brought back quite a few for me as well to share with you and the others who look at my comment Editing as I watch (E#. Means the edits)

We went to a yard sale and I found a gameboy, pokemon yellow, blue, and red all for like $10 dollars. I begged my mom to buy it and she did. I played red so many times and I got lost at every stage that you did lmao. Gen 3 was my all time favorite and I would spend days fighting the elite 4 over and over again to get every pokemon to level 100 I had over 255 hours before I started a new game just to repeat the process.
