George R.R. Martin's "A Game of Thrones," comes to HBO in a series and in this clip Sean Bean's Eddard Stark and the "Kingslayer" Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) meet and show obvious distaste for each other. Their conflict shadows possible conflicts to come.

The Ned Stark in the show is different from book Ned. In the books he's not known as much of a warrior. In the show he's almost as good as Jaime, probably because the producers couldn't resist making the legendary Sean Bean a total badass. You can see this both in the fight between him and Jaime and their conversation here. Even though Jaime is a little condescending here he clearly thinks highly of Ned as a fighter.
@paulschlacter4181
@paulschlacter4181 8 лет назад
Didn't read the books, but does Jaime ever question Ned Stark "beating" Arthur Dayne? I mean, we all know how it happened now, but Jaime looked up to Arthur Dayne saying he could cut through this generation of kingsguard with his left hand while taking a piss. But, since only Howland Reed and Ned know what happened, then wouldn't the rest of Westeros think Ned Stark is a pretty skilled warrior, despite it being 3 vs 7
@christianrobinson4227
@christianrobinson4227 8 лет назад
Paul Schlacter No I don't think he does. Good question though. In all of Jaime's chapters I don't think he ever thinks about Ned Stark's defeat of Dayne. He doesn't think of Ned much at all. He probably knew it was mostly chance that Ned defeated him considering it was 3 against 7. In real battles, anything can happen. Being the best doesn't guarantee anything.

Should be noted Jamie might believe Ned is the "Knight of the Smiling Tree" from the Harrenhall tourney. Ned is also credited with besting Sir Arthur Dyne. At this point Ned had served in many battles both as a fighter and a commander. It's quite possible that people don't think he's a very skilled fighter because that's what he wants them to think. Also note Robert was both skilled and strong and the person he probably trained with the most would have been Ned Stark.

Arthur Dayne and Barristan Selmy were in that rare Achilles territory. Jaime had the early promise, but might not have been any better ultimately than Loras Tyrell. He even compares himself with Loras in the books after assuming the post of Lord Commander of the King's Guard. Dayne was tops, especially with Dawn in hand. Barristan was close, maybe as good, but he didn't have a meteorite sword (Dawn) or even Valyrian Steel, so he'd go down if he and Dayne fought in their primes. You can see how constricted and tense Jaime is as he approaches, then his sly guise comes on as he immediately gets defensive and tries to get a rise out of Ned. But Ned is a fully integrated man who absorbs Jaime's snide remark about "getting a little old" and transmutes that energy back in Jaime into a cool response. You can see Jaime light up, like he sees a spark of the father he never had.

I realize it probably wouldn’t make sense in terms of their history and their families’ history, but it would’ve been neat of Ned and Jaime had somehow become friends. Or at the least, come to share a mutual respect.
@LS4B7
@LS4B7 Год назад
they did share a mutual respect, Ned respects Jamie for his decision of betraying a tyrant and Jamie respects Ned for the trident battle because Ned could held himself against the best swordsman ever, Arthur Dayne, the thing is Jamie loves Tyrion way more than he respects Ned, that is why he attacked Ned (and producers purposely made Ned equal to Jamie), but in the books, Jamie didn't even fight Ned and Ned had a horse fall that shattered his leg. All of these events unfolded in the death of Ned, if Jamie never showed up to fuck with Ned, the Starks would've lead the battalion against Gregor Clegane, fall into Tywin's trap and be used as a trade coin for Tyrion.

@danthemancushecan
@danthemancushecan 3 месяца назад
What most people seem to not understand about Ned's character is that he doesn't look at combat as a sport or something to glorify like Robert or Jaime. He hates tourneys and sees no point in them. He looks at combat as battle amongst warriors and has a certain amount of regard for death and life. One also needs to consider his older brother who was a hothead and quick to anger. Ned being the younger 2nd brother most assuredly watched Brandon land himself into troubling situations due to his temperament. So it would make sense that Ned would be the opposite of Brandon. Quiet, calm, calculating, and hard to read.

@MrKataclisma
@MrKataclisma 5 лет назад
IMO both on the books as on the show Ned would'nt think differently of Jaime even tho he broke his oath cuz mad king was going to burn the city, Ned is a character constructed to be the most honorable man in Westeros, your words, vows and loyalty mean everything to him is even above family, so no, he would have respected Jaime more if he kept his oath as a kingsguard.
@legrandliseurtri7495
@legrandliseurtri7495 4 года назад
@@MrKataclisma False. Ned considers morality more important than honor. It isn't honorable to lie about the origin of Jon snow, but it is morally right. It isn't honorable to try to protect people from the king(Tommen, Myrcella and still jon snow), but it is moral. It isn't honorable to falsely confess treason, but it is moral to save your daughters in the process. Unlike someone like Barristan, if he was a King's guard, he wouldn't have stand and let the mad king do these horrible actions, he would have abandonned his position and defy him no matter the consequences. So yes, he would have supported Jaime's reasons.

"I dont fight in tournaments bc when I fight a man in real life I dont want him to know what Im capable of". OR, MORE LIKELY, if Ned participated in tournaments, theyd quickly know that he wasnt half the swordsman it would take to honorably kill Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning, and that would bring lots of questions.

Except Ned never claimed to have defeated Arthur Dayne in single combat. And Howland Reed stabbing Ser Arthur in the back was not dishonourable, that was not an oficial duel or trial by combat. What was Howland suposed to do? Let his best friend die? Plus Ned doesn't like fighting for entertainment hence why he never takes part in tourneys.

The way I heard it, Jaime was going to be married to Lysa Tully. Cersei convinced him to join the Kingsguard, since it was believed she would marry Rhaegar. The plan was that he wouldn't marry anyone, & since they would both be in King's Landing, they would continue their affair, so he agreed. It wasn't until later that he realized that Aerys wanted him in the KG to insult Tywin, not for any other reason.
