Join Bill Hader (Saturday Night Live, The Skeleton Twins, Hod Rod, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Tropic Thunder) as he discusses his hit show Barry, now streaming on HBO Go and HBO Now.
About the show:
Disillusioned at the thought of taking down another "mark," depressed, low-level hit man Barry Berkman seeks a way out. When the Midwesterner reluctantly travels to Los Angeles to execute a hit on an actor who is bedding a mobster's wife, little does Barry know that the City of Angels may be his sanctuary. He follows his target into acting class and ends up instantly drawn to the community of eager hopefuls, especially dedicated student Sally, who becomes the object of his affection. While Barry wants to start a new life as an actor, his handler, Fuches, has other ideas, and the hit man's criminal past won't let him walk away so easily.

Bill Hader is so cool, he dresses nicely, not like a superstar or diva, he does not hang out on the parties, but he laughs like hell just seing the funny situations and connections etc, he really seems to enjoy what he does on a great level. I really like seeing him on talk shows and interviews, and he always has a story for us.

he has an amazing mind. being fascinated with murder in a sense of trying to understand what would that person be like in reality, he kinda makes the line between ''murderers'' and ''normal people'' blurry. the society demonizes people who commit crimes and only punishes them without trying to really get to roots of why someone has certain impulses or acts in a certain way... like after so many years of psychologists trying to figure out motives and their minds we still have more and more people commiting crimes and going to prison. and you can't say its just simply evil people because its not like a generation of sociopaths was born - no, we are missing something. i feel like it is this immense separation we make between ourselves and criminals - when in truth every single one of us is capable of horrible things if put in the specific situation and had certain information or experience. i feel like his fascination with the criminal mind naturally goes to more understanding of these minds we condemn. and i love that he talks about it so openly, you would see it in his work even if he didn't, but this makes it so that there is not much room for misaligned interpretation.
@floatingsara

Your comment makes me finally understand what got me hooked about "Barry" - besides being written by Bill Hader. I am a great fan of the German band "Rammstein" and this is one of their recurrent themes. Rammstein's singer, Till Lindemann, said that societies always try to put criminals in a hole and throw the key away. But this is just cowardly. This is why their songs often oblige listeners to face the mind of a serial killer, or a rapist, or a cannibal. Which makes their songs repulsive and attractive at the same time.

He’s a lot more than a former SNL cast member. Of course he’s hilarious. He’s also a cinematic genius, though. It’s so clear he wants to talk about his true passions these days, not just Stefan. Did any of them even watch Barry 😩

Barry does a great way of sympathizing early on with what ends up being a totally horrible and awful narcissist. You dislike him by the last season and being to sympathize with the other characters manipulated by him who almost all come to resent him for it. It was a great arc.

"Barry" is at the level of Molière's comedy, really. The situations are hilarious, but the main character is tragic. He's so tragic, that I actually feel bad for the man most of the time. I'm in the middle of season 2 and I feel like I'm watching a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde story, reloaded.

The documentary "The Act of Killing" covers massacres that took place in the 1960s in Indonesia, not the Philippines (as mentioned by Hader in this interview). An understandable mistake, given the thousands of extrajudicial killings committed by Philippine police in the last three years.

Absolutely love the show and can't wait for season 3. Although I've never really liked SNL. But whoever works there or is even remotely connected to it never fail to mention it do they.

A great, great show.. thanks so much. 'Barry' resonates strongly with the 1968 movie "Performance" (released in 1970) - Nicolas Roeg, Donald Cammell - starring James Fox and Mick Jagger - in his first movie roll. A powerful story about transformation - shot during the time when film production process was still experimental. Barry and Performance are really different, but both dominate in the same genre. ..

Dark, gripping, amazing acting, violent, somewhat realistic, amazing writing, touching and insanely funny.... ok enought praising. Just watch the show from the beginning. It's the greatest show I have seen for can't remember when. If you disagree, I give you money back.

I can forgive the interviewer for asking if Stephen Root had a comedy background since he played Milton in Office Space so well, you forget it’s him. “I saw the squirrels... and they were married.”

Barry is the first thing I've ever seen Stephen Root in. He's not a well known comedy actor.
@Ward413
@Ward413 4 года назад
brassholio Anyone who’s seen Office Space or Dodgeball knows he’s not new to comedy though. Being that Office Space is one of the most well known and admired cult classics ever, that’s a lot of people. Besides, an entertainment interviewer should know who Stephen Root is. The guy has 250 acting credits on IMDB. You’ve likely seen something he was in and didn’t know - that’s what a good character actor does.

@@Ward413 I saw Dodgeball when I was a teenager, I never saw Office Space. It might be a cult classic but that doesn't mean he's well know to the mainstream. Sure, if I was conducting an interview I would do some research, but to an average viewer such as myself, I have no idea about this guys credits. If he was well known I'd be able to list off a bunch of things done, like say, Michael Palin, Stephen Fry, or Ricky Gervais. These are well known comedy actors. Stephen Root is not one of them.
@Ward413
@Ward413 4 года назад
brassholio I didn’t say he was a well known comedy actor though. My point was that the interviewer should know he has a background in comedy. I never once suggested he was on the same level as someone like Ricky Gervais. That would clearly not be true. I don’t even know what we’re debating at this point mate.

Impressions are like comedy assassinations. You distill the essence of someone, most often to mock them, and there is no defense against it. Perhaps Bill Hader feels like an assassin that just wants to act instead.

In nearly every interview on Barry, the interviewer seems to be unfamiliar with tragicomedy or dark comedy. Like they actually struggle with it. Do some people just watch the same thing over and over again?
