Being that woman more often wore hats and intricate hairstyles, it doesn't surprise me they had a longer pipe. I like churchwarden style pipes to keep the flames out of my face when lighting
Modern Churchwardens seem to have standard 12 inch length, but they were up to 24 inches when made of clay. Here in the UK public houses had a rack for churchwardens with space for your name,so you had a pipe for when you wanted one with your drink.According to my grandfather his publican scored the stems of them and offered a pipe full of tobacco for the price of a pint. When the smoker had finished he broke off a piece of the stem ready for the next customer.
I love my Churchwardens! The first story I heard was the originals had longer stems, so that parishioners could smoke in church and stick the bowl out the window, so that the smoke would not be inside the church as much. I take mine camping with me and keep it in a hard case for my cigars, when I take it apart it fits perfectly. My tobacconist sells long pipe cleaners just for cleaning them. The fact that you have the option of two stems is brilliant. Enjoyed. Peace - Stanley
A churchwarden is just the thing to avoid tongue bite from an aromatic blend that tends to smoke hot. Besides, they look so elegant when you are just sitting and relaxing.
Going through your videos, I found this one and it's one I missed along the way. Very good and informative. I love Church Warden pipes from time to time. Thanks for sharing history and your pipe knowledge.
I heard another story. One of duties beside the others of churchwardens was candles extinguishing (turning off the lights). And they had special device for this, kind of stick with a bowl at the end. Thereby pipes with long stem got the name, cause it looks very similar.
This is a fantastic video, my Brother. I have a subscriber that I just referred over to your channel to watch this video, as he had questions about the churchwarden. Hope you are well, my friend! God bless!
+Izzy Cowan Hi Izzy, no filter in my Chruchwarden. Yes, I do use a filter in the pipes that were "made" for it; mostly Savinelli 6 or 9 mm balsa filters. But most of my pipes are filter-less pipes; aka designed not to take filters.
Thabo, enjoyed the video. Interesting info I never thought of the origins behind the chuchwarden. Guess I took it for granted from all the images in books and media, that it was the lasting symbol of a simpler life. At least that is how I veiw it when I smoke mine. Thanks and take care, Wayne.
Thanks for the clip Thabo. Atleast Brebbia is making small black adapters to filter pipes. They should fit all pipe brands with filter capability.I don't use filters. I hope that everything safe and sound down there and I hope that springboks shall be victorious In Would Cup.
South Africa is such a beautiful country, you are blessed to live there. I have read some frightening stories about acts of violence committed against farm owners, I prey the truth lies somewhere in the middle and that there is some political stability in your country. Sorry to get political but certain news and political leader speeches are very disturbing.
umfundise aka Thabo Well if it were up to me, I'd just give you citizenship. But I can't do that. :( I met another white Zimbabwean while visiting my brother in Paraguay. He's serving two years in Peace Corps.
