to see dash 8's or any turbo prop get push back is a rare sight to me on my Caribbean island :)

I love these old birds. Surely gonna miss them after they're all gone, even if the much larger Q400 sticks around for a while longer.

And very, very bright...if the Captain accidently turns them on during a pushback. Wasn't pleasant.

WOW great video! I think turboprop engines are amazing due to their high bypass ratio compared to other engines. this gives it a much better fuel economy although its not very well suited for long distance flights and the altitude is limited on them also, but still they are a very fine piece of engineering.

'high bypass ratio' ? LOLS . . .

It's sad for you, my friend. The Dash-8 makes an AWESOME sound (which is music to my ears) when you're aside them :)

I'm a big fan of turboprop airliners. People who are not observant are fooled into thinking that the turboprop engine is a turbocharged piston driven propeller engine, rather than a jet propeller engine. Observant people like myself can listen to the engine as it fires up, and tell it's a jet engine with a propeller attatched by the jet whine that's heard when the propeller starts to rotate. They generally fire up the starboard engine first, and then the port engine. They let the engines run in low idle for a minute or two, and when they go into high idle, the "box fan" sound is added to the whine of the jet engines. In takeoff, when the props are rotated at their maximum RPM, they make the "bumblebee" sound, creating the bass hum and vibration heard inside the cabin. That's what leads people to believe that it's a piston driven propeller engine. I personally like the sound that the props make. Like some say that driving a vehicle with a manual transmission is real driving, I say that flying in a propeller driven airliner is "Real Flying"! I wish that airliners such as the Boeing 737, and the Airbus A-320, used for most domestic flights, like from Charlotte NC to New York LaGuardia, were turboprop instead of fan jet. It's my understanding that turboprop engines are so much more fuel efficient, that a Boeing 737, with four turboprops would use 40 percent less jet fuel, than with the two fan jet engines. It would save a lot of jet fuel, but it would also make flying more enjoyable and exhilarating. To remind the public that a turboprop engine is a jet propeller engine, they should paint in big letters on the sides of the engine cowels, "PROP JET".

Thanks!!! No, the jetway doesn't extend to the Dash-8 door. There is a door to the terminal next to the Dash-8. What they do is strapping the props to make sure nobody get hurt and then they open the door. Security is watching the ops to make sure that everybody goes to the terminal or to the Dash-8, depending on the situation.

you're right, but can be also a q200, the difference between the 100 and 200 is just the engine, the 200 has stronger ones.

You can't be wrong with old sounds of any aircraft! Hahaha Just think about the MD80 vs the MD90 ;)
@mattlindsay6974

I didnt realise those aircraft types required a pushback, cause Ive never seen the Qantaslink Dash 8s in Australia use a pushback on those aircraft. Only the jet aircraft here use pushback that are parked at aerobridge gates.
@turtlbrdr
@turtlbrdr 9 лет назад
matt lindsay they don't require it, the dash 8 series are all capable of reverse prop operation. There may be multiple reasons that they get pushed back. The pushing tug has better visibility of where the plane is going, uses less of the planes fuel, doesn't create a prop wash in the work area; and, as you can hear at 4:10, when you de-feather the props there is a noise factor.

... or .... the little tiny plane could just turn right on its own ... they had plenty of room there ... hardly necessary to be theatrical with a pushback .. its a Dash 8-100 for chrissake!

Well, like you, I've also never seen Dash-8-100s get pushed back from their gate prior to departure, either. However, check this out: at Newark Airport and several others where the Q400 series of this aircraft serves in abundance, those birds make use of jetways just like the larger jets do - such as 737s and whatnot. I find that fascinating! And starting back in late '98, American Eagle's SAAB 340s were making use of jetway docking at the Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport (KXNA), near Bentonville (Walmart's headquarters), before they were eventually retired 10 years later. When I first saw the 33-seat SAAB dock at a jetway, my heart simply melted!! Too bad I never had a chance to board a turboprop like that before, let alone a small one like the SAAB or Dash-8-100/200.

Russell L. Smith I've seen it happen in heavy rain when a stubborn chock threatened to delay departure. It was one of the most beautiful things I've ever witnessed. Thanks to the overnight tech crew leaning her nose gear right up on the chock after returning from a radar test the night before. lol.

i know :) i find the older Q300 and 200 make a differrent noise to the new Q400 on max and throttling up, but the feather sounds the same, maybe its because its has 6 blades and its a new engine :) but i like the old sound better

Sorry, ipad finger slip. As for taxiing with 1 in feather we do that to save on fuel. It lowers the fuel burn by about 100 pounds an hour for the taxi. Over the course of a year and the entire fleet it adds up.
