this is more useful than I thought! Im getting my own apartment soon and this is so helpful~ Definitely have to rewatch this a few times to make sure I remember what to look out for
@@GritHero At that point it was clear that he wasn't interested in delivering quality (or basic) work lol. All the best for yours! (if you're doing one)
@@haylivk Thanks for sharing your video, it's really helpful for my wife and I as we're looking at getting our first home! Did your ID provide end-to-end service? Meaning were they your sole contact point? were they managing all the different contractors and the project time line? were these contractors engaged by your ID? We're thinking of getting an ID too, but this video is really giving us 2nd thoughts!
@@wcooi2 Supposed to, but we did end up managing subcons/timelines ourselves 😅 Yes, the subcons are engaged by our ID. Oops I hope this video doesn't scare you! Just like every work colleague, every ID is different- it really depends on the ID you engage. I believe professional IDs would've flagged out most points listed to yall for further consideration. Hope this helps and jiayou for your reno regardless of your ID decision! 💪🏻
@@makeshifthouse At that time of our reno in 2019-20, there weren’t many (or any) local reno videos / abt specific defects for us to reference :( So we put together this list in hopes of helping future homeowners like us. I’m so glad that this was helpful for you! 😊
Thank you so much for this video! I'm so sorry that you had to go through all these defects with your ID and yet you were able to channel energy into sharing your experience with others. This has been very helpful for me!
Hi, thank you for sharing your insights! Was wondering, because I've heard a lot of my friends who done it says that usually poor reno works are the trade off of being affordable price. Do you think this is true for your context? I was wondering if paying for a higher price for better quality and workmanship is true here
Hi Ripley! ☺️ My reno was 37K (reno, tiles, electrical, aircon etc) + 20K (furniture, fittings, appliances); you can decide where it lies on the cost spectrum :) Personally, I’ve friends whose reno amounted to a similar total cost but had much better quality/workmanship, but that’s subjective and based on our circle’s exp as well. Definitely agree that paying more to engage quality IDs might help! It’s fair (quality investment = quality output), but it also really depends on luck. I’ve also read about other renos that costed way more that it should that didn’t end that well 😢
@@haylivk I see! I guess it really have to find a good one, and best if thru word of mouth cos they had experience it before. Nonetheless thank you for this informative video! really give me more insights to do proper planning for my house in the future! :D
@@ripleylee5726 ah totally agree. Wom is the most reliable 😊 Most welcome and very glad to have helped you with this! All the best for your reno journey 😆
This is like a nightmare ID. Could you PM me the name of your ID? I can accept that some defects, but this is just inexcusable. I'm also saving this video for when I perform inspection after the reno.
Yup, some ‘defects’ we eventually didn’t pursue were left in there as well to be more comprehensive. Glad to have helped!😊 Pls DM me on IG, unable to PM on YT :)
Thanks for sharing this, very helpful. Sorry about your totally crap contractor n bad ID also. We've been screwed over much worse by a crap contractor also and not for a flat. Just to seem have more and more of crooked companies nowadays.
My pleasure to share, esp for other first-time homeowners out there so they won't get smoked. Agree that professionalism is hard to find nowadays and we gotta be more careful when selecting who to work with. Sorry to hear about your experience, hope that things are getting better for you! 💪🏻
my reno also got disrupted due to covid, no choice carpentry has to be sent from msia to sg and installed by another set of carpenters whom are not familiar with the design and how it should be assembled. Your ID's contractors workmanship really cmi, glad this painful process is finally over for you
Oh my, must have been a very disruptive period for you :( Our ID actually got a local carpenter for rectifications amidst the MCO, but the local carpenter declined to proceed after coming down to our flat for a site recce lol. Yeah, so glad it’s over! I hope your renovations are going well currently too 😁
Did this so that first-time buyers like us wouldn't have to go through the heartache we had to while uncovering these one by one and questioning ourselves along the way 😂 Thank you for watching!💜
Hello Yong Kang! We identified the uneven ones and our contractor hacked and redid those. Needed to pay more for tiles though cos our ID shared that he didn’t order much/enough to cater for wastage.
Thanks for sharing. That is bad contractor you have, so many defects. The Id didnt do a good job. Good thing you have so many sharp eyes to spot the defects. I would have missed it altogether.
You’re more than welcome :) yes, I’m so grateful to our friends and cousins who came to help us with it and it honestly took off a lot of stress from us. Thank you so much for your comment, and I hope that this will be helpful for you! :)
Hello, this is an re-upload as the previous BGM was incorrectly labelled as no copyright 🥺Thank you for the kind comments left on the original vid! 🙇🏻♀️🙆🏻♀️🥺
Personally, we'll still prefer tiles to vinyl due to the feel of it :) Vinyl is easier to install vs. more factors for tiles eg. tile warping, workmanship etc. Ultimately depends on your personal preference 😊 Hope this helps!
Really terrible ID and contractor. The ID should be your clerk-of-work for quality assurance and reject poor workmanship. If you can reveal them, we can shitlist them.
more than half of the defects shown are things that they honestly could have just done it properly for the first time.. now they end up gotta come and touch up here and there.. waste of manpower & man hours sia.. Makes me wonder did the ID even do any inspection in the first place
I doubt so. He just forwards all my defect notes to the contractors, and gives me a one-liner answer like oh they did everything! Pls check. And I've to go through 1 by 1 to find out what they've not completed... 100% baby-shitting 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ Thanks for knowing my pain
Hi thanks for the video. It is really useful cos i will be doing my reno for the first time. Will like to about the cabinets that you mentioned that you bought from taobao. Possible to send the TB link? I am also looking at TB for sink, what 3pf did you use?
Glad it was useful for you 😊 Could you give me the timestamp of the taobao cabinet? I used oops.sg, you can also check out my taobao shopping guide video if you're int :)
Try showing them reference photos of units that are properly done with detailed photos of your defects and most importantly, be extremely persistent. There were instances where the workers told us that it's not their job, and told us to settle it ourselves / our HDB officer being unresponsive. Overall it took ~2 months to get everything settled, with reminder calls/emails every few days. Hope this helps 💪🏻
This happened to me before moving in ... I did make complaint to my ID , she did helped to rectified it . After I moved in, I found out more and more and of course I do what I should , and now waiting for the rectification.
Same, we found more while cleaning and it was demoralising. I'm glad that rectification works are being arranged for your new home, and I hope that everything will proceed smoothly and turn out great for you! 🙏🏻
This is really informative! I had similar floor tiles, those uneven floor tiles and grout colours were really frustrating, i went though rounds and rounds of rectification for the floor but couldn’t seem to resolve them all. 😤
Ah I feel you 😭 It got more frustrating when we couldn't tell if it was really unavoidable (due to our choice of tiles) or if we were being smoked... I hope it'll get better for you over time!! 💜
Hi Hayliv, thanks for your sharing. I have heard in your video that your drawer are from taobao, so did you buy the whole kitchen cabinet or just the drawer?
Hi! Im currently having reno at my place and the workmanship for the carpentry is really bad too. Lots of chips and dents. For those chips and dents in ur vid how did ur ID/ contractor correct it for you?
Hello, sorry to hear that 😔 They used putty (?) a substance to fill the dents, and used white markers to colour them over lol. My husband told them to change the whole drawer/shelf/door completely for those I couldn’t accept. Don’t accept it at the expense of lowering your own standards!
@@haylivk Thanks so much for replying! for those that they changed the whole door/ drawer did they charge you for that? Also do you mind elaborating how the clothing bar dropped when you were removing hangers? Because currently my ones look like yours, the length is slightly short (not long enough to touch both ends of the wardrobe). Not sure if I need to raise this up to the carpenter and am afraid they would claim it is not an issue and wouldn't change for me.
@@dawajugi - replacement of drawers/doors: nope they didn’t charge, but it was minimal (~3). They mainly filled it in for dents/coloured over for chips. Not the best, but we rly wanted to finish up the reno ASAP lol. - Short hanger bars: get them to replace the entire bar! It means that they cut too much / gave you a bar that’s too short. It’s 100% a defect. Tell them you paid for a hanging bar, not a loose rod :/ I hope you haven’t released 100% of the payment to them yet? Do keep 10-15% of the reno payment first and only transfer when they’ve completed ALL of the defects rectification to your standard. If they refuse to do the defects for you maybe you can treat it as them giving you a 10% discount for their lack of quality :/
@@haylivk I feel you on wanting to finish it ASAP. Dealing with them is bloody exhausting. Thank you for making this video! Haha really helped me know what are the things to look out for!
Nice list! Completing my second house renovation now and didn’t know so many things can go wrong. It’s a low bar for your contractor already. It’s quite severe for those things you have listed. Even for the minor paint scraping that I have fixed, feels good that after 8years, we didn’t lived with it. Out of topic questions but what camera are you using? Haha.. the colour grading looks quite consistent. Thinking how to set up my workflow..
Hello! I was using iPhone XS Max for this video I believe; mainly Sony ZV-1 for my recent videos. Edited using Final Cut Pro :) Finding a suitable workflow is so impt! Hope this helps and all the best :)
