What is HDMI ARC and how can you use it? HDMI ARC stands for "High Definition Multimedia Interface Audio Return Channel".
ARC allows for the "upstream" and "downstream" of signals over a single HDMI connection between your TV and any ARC-equipped A/V deices. This allows for the use of a single remote for all of your connected devices most common functions.
To make this work, first, make sure any connected components are equipped with ARC. Then simply connect your devices with a recently made HDMI cable (2009 or later). In some rare cases, you may need to activate ARC through your components settings, but most will have ARC enabled by default.
Happy watching!

I think RU-vid puts those by default? There is a chrome extension to get rid of them. For some reason guys at RU-vid think the last 10 seconds of any video have nothing interesting at all so they think it's ok to hide it behind those end cards, on the top of that no content creator in RU-vid seems to acknowledge this issue and add some extra seconds of a blank screen at the end to keep their content watchable to the very end.

As a professional A/V tech, I'll just say that ARC is awesome WHEN IT WORKS, but your results may vary depending on your equipment. I've had the best luck when using matching brands. Sony stuff seems to play nice with ARC. Vizio and Samsung have been a mixed bag, being so model dependent. The control functions can be really cool though, like powering on your tv and receiver automatically when you turn on your BluRay player. Sometimes you can basically control all devices with just one stock remote and no universal. That is very cool.

ARC is a wonderful feature. I bought a new LG TV and I have a PS4 Pro, but my Onkyo receiver doesn't support the 4K HDR video of the Pro. But the receiver and TV both support ARC, so I connected the Pro directly to the TV, and connected the TV and receiver using the HDMI ARC ports. I get the HDR picture of the Pro on the TV, and the audio is passed through the ARC port back to the receiver. The only thing to note is that ARC does support Dolby Digital and DTS, but not the high-end Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio.

Don’t know why everyone’s pissed, this explained it for me. HDMI can send higher quality audio that optical, so forget optical. I plugged my PS4 into the sound bar input , and then sound bar output to HDMI 3 ARC on TV. I’m now on HDMI 1 watching cable tv and the ARC is enabled on all inputs. ARC basically leeches an audio signal upstream of the device that’s hooked up. I didn’t understand the mechanics at first but now that it’s enabled it’s a luxury. TV and sound bar now work in unison with one controller.

@martineyles
@martineyles 5 лет назад
TV broadcasts are unlikely to use the latest formats, so ARC is normally sufficient to handle the sound from its internal tuner. Ideally everything else connects directly to the AV amp so gets to use the full bandwith main audio channel. This is more complicated in situations where you have an AV amp supporting the latest audio formats but not supporting 4k, and have a 4k bluray player and TV. In this case it's necessary to connect the bluray player to the TV directly to enjoy the 4k picture. In this case, rellying on the ARC reduces your audio to the older low bandwith formats. Optical and coaxial are also limited to the older formats, as they have similar bandwidth to the ARC. This is why a number of 4k bluray players have 2 hdmi outputs. This allows one to transport the picture to the TV in 4k, and the other to transport the audio to the AV amp in the latest formats simoultaneously. In this kind of setup, non 4k devices using the latest audio should be connected to the av amp, and 4k devices not using the latest audio should be connected to the tv. Non 4k devices not using the latest audio can be connected wherever is most convenient. Everything is so much simpler if your av amp supports 4k!
@martineyles
@martineyles 5 лет назад
@@dimzan235 @rizdraver. You're talking cross-purposes. The HDMI ARC and Optical connection (and also coaxial digital) all have too low a bandwidth to support the latest audio formats. The main HDMI audio channel has a higher bandwith than all of these. You need to connect you bluray player directly to your AV amp via HDMI to enjoy the latest formats, as this would use the main audio channel. The ARC feature is only used for audio going from your TV to your AV amp or soundbar. Of course, this does mean that Netflix apps built into TVs will only ever support the older audio formats.

I use the optical out on TVs all the time on my installations and the good thing is that it is dependable and always works. The downside is that generally speaking, most TVs only output PCM through the optical and thus, no real surround. If at all possible, I just route everything through the receiver (assuming there is one) and just use the TV as a display. For smart features like Netflix, Hulu, etc., I use a streaming device such as AppleTV, Roku, or Blu-ray player. It works every time and you get surround (assuming it’s in a surround system). If there is no surround receiver, I often end up using the optical for a sound bar because TV speakers these days pretty much suck. They’ve generally never been great but with the design of the TVs now, the tiny speakers often end up on the back of the TV.

Would had been great had Digital Trends, with all of their resources, actually made a tutorial, rather than summarize a feature. Like explaining the difference(s) between ARC & TOSLINK, how to setup & why HDMI ARC is the best choice. For some, there may be no difference between the two. Example, in the absence of a receiver, connecting a soundbar. I can't tell the difference between TOSLINK (or optical) versus ARC, other than it was more work in setting up the latter. Many articles has stated plainly that HDMI ARC will be more important with the full HDMI 2.1 spec (HDCP 2.3 or later) versus HDCP 2.2 & older. So only with newer hardware across the board there will be a real difference in the sound. However, HDMI ARC can be beneficial now, that is, as long as one has a real home theater setup......and we have the instruction of how to set it up.

@cousinluigi

Um, ARC itself doesn't allow for a single remote for all features, so saying that is misleading. Even if your equipment **doesn't** support ARC, you can still use one remote for all the basic commands (volume, channel, playback transport), provided all the HDMI gear is relatively new, that is, new enough to support *another* three-letter acronym: CEC. CEC stands for Consumer Electronics Control, and there's plenty of equipment out there without ARC, that still support CEC. So the only difference ARC makes, is the first one explained in the video, i.e. you don't need a separate cable for sending audio from the TV back to the receiver.

Great! Now only if you had matching components.... So not so useful after all. Even when it should work out of the box, sometimes it just doesn't.

ARC is the same as CEC. basically just control a ps4 xbox ones menu with your tv remote.

Tried using ARC on my new Samsung 4K with an expensive Bose SoundTouch system and it was frustrating beyond belief, come to find out that between the tv updating and Bose updating they just won’t talk to each other consistently, I’m forced to use the optical connection.

My TV doesn't have Audio Return Channel and my Sony HT RT3 does. I've tried two different HDMI splitters but that doesn't give me audio through HDMI to the sound bar. My next move is to buy a reasonably priced TV which has HDMI ARC

ARC lets you send the audio from your TV to your receiver (with more options and higher quality, like Dolby HD, Atmos, etc., than using optical output), and lets your send the audio from the receiver to your TV. So, if you have, say, an Xbox One hooked up to HDMI 1 on your TV, but HDMI 3 is the ARC port, then hooking HDMI 3 to the TV output of your receiver will let you play back the highest quality audio on your receiver, and let you control the volume with your TV's remote.

@@brandogg yeah,thanks for the info!...I'm finally figuring it out! I can now see that "arc" would be beneficial if your video and sound is coming from an "app" that integral to the tv! Like in a bedroom setting where you may not be running an "avr" or even if you are running an "avr" but your getting your audio signal from an integral tv app (like Netflix). In my living room I run everything thru my "avr" including a separate "roku" box so "arc" is really no help for me in that system. But in my bedroom I dont have an "avr" and I'm running a sound bar and a 4k blue ray player and I have discovered that the "arc" input is beneficial in that setting! Thanks guys for yall input! I think I finally have a grasp for this "arc"...lol!!!!

I agree with a lot of the comments here and this video is useless. For example my AV Receiver has an ARC HDMI on the back to support 4K only the receiver came out before HDMI 2.0 and only supports HDMI 1.4 so therefore it cannot transmit HD Lossless Audio and a 4K Picture at the same time and will only transmit PCM Stereo via ARC with the 4K Picture. It's just as well that companies like Sony make 4K Blu Ray Players with both ARC and a HDMI Audio Out so it saves me buying a new receiver.
