A video demonstrating control of my home theater with one remote control via HDMI-CEC. In the video we use an AppleTV, Marantz Receiver, and Optoma Projector but the basic setup should work with pretty much any TV, Receiver, and set top box made in the last few years.

Thanks for the video. I currently have my cable box as my hdmi source 1 and nvidia shield as hdmi source 2. When I try to go to the hdmi source 2 to play the Nadia shield box it will go on for 15 seconds and then automatically switch back to source 1. I have to go back with my Logitech remote and have it correct the source 2 input. How do I make it so when I first go to source 2 the shield it will stay on that source and not switch out back to my source one cable?

I have connected my soundbar through arc port of soundbar to normal hdmi port of tv as tv lacks arc port....I have firestick connected to hdmi in of soundbar and tried to add control of soundbar to firestick remote and it didn't work....is arc port a mandate for this?...because I was able to add my tv controls through the same setup...so I feel even soundbar should work

@@TheHTGuys I have my Nvidia shield plugged into my GT 5600 and it won't turn off with the shield remote even with cec and hdmi link turned on for them. I can control my sound bar with the IR blaster, but CEC isn't working for some reason.

Great video! You should peel the stickers off the AVR though! :)

noticed the "auto lip sync" feature when u were scrolling through ur AVR options. does that really work? how can it the AVR know the delay time the tv/projector takes to produce the image? audio lip sync is something i am constantly struggling with on my system (Sony 4K UHD player, roku ultra, samsung JU7100, and denon 930H). i always seem to be messing with the delay amount - bc it appears its different btween the roku and the blu ray player and then even off with different apps on the roku, and also different different with the 4k player depending on if dvd, blu ray or uhd. its maddening. whats the recommended way to calibrate for all these different sources / signals within each source? thx for any guidance.

Why don’t you explain how you connected your devices!? Is Apple TV connected to projector and prjector earc to marantz? Or is Apple TV connected to Marantz and the projector marantz too?

Hi, The video was more about how to use HDMI-CEC generically. Regardless how its connected the CEC is still setup the same way. But since you asked. AppleTV goes into the receiver and the receiver output is sent to HDMI 1 of the projector.

a ps4 in place of Apple tv works the same way? with the tv remote controlling everything?

Very helpful. It worked! I have the same Optoma Cinemax and the Apple TV 4K as you do, and the power on/off worked as you described. Is there a way to get the volume to work directly as well? I have no receiver - it just goes direct. I have tried to "learn" the Optoma remote using Apple TV but it doesn't seem to detect the signal it emits. Appreciate the help!

Hello, I have the same set up as you (maranta 7012) and optoma Cinemax p2. I set the link settings in the optoma and the cec control in the maranta, but it doesn’t seem to be working. I was hoping to use the power button on the maranta remote to turn off the tv and get rid of one remote. Tried the tv audio button and the main power button. I also tried using the power button on the optoma remote. They each work for their respective devices but don’t seem to be turning off the other one. Any ideas what’s wrong?

Not quite sure what else could be causing this. Please send me an email ara@htguys.com. We can take this discussion offline and try to zero in on a solution.

Hey, when you turn everything off, specifically the projector. Does your projector just shut off immediately or does it go into cool down mode? I am using a Roku Ultra, I can control the volume of my Onkyo receiver, but when I press the power button, my Ben Q projector turns the lamp off but the power stays on. Basically what I am asking, is does it not cooling down effect a projector?
@TheHTGuys
@TheHTGuys 3 года назад
Hi Nick, this projector is a laser projector so it doesn't get as hot as a lamp. Even still once the power is cut the fan does stay on for a bit.

Hey Ara, long time listener of your podcast, tho I hit gaps of listening. When did you get KEF's? I went with Q700s, Q600c and Q100's a few years ago and LOVE them. Which ones did you go with?

Is there some type of blockage sensor in the front? My Apple TV 4K (second generation) Samsung TV Remote RF to CEC commands (not IR) stops working if Apple TV is blocked in the slightest I plugged my Apple TV 4K (second generation) into my Samsung 2020 8K TV HDMI 2 port. The TV automatically detected it and added an "Apple" icon device for HDMI 2. My Samsung TV remote immediately allowed full control the Apple TV. Samsung must be sending CEC commands via HDMI because I confirmed the Samsung remote will still allow full control the Apple TV even if I put the Samsung TV remote under a pillow or walk into the next room and close the door. Here's the mystery, the Apple TV will ONLY respond to the Samsung TV remote, if the Apple TV is sitting out in the open with nothing blocking the front of it in the slightest. If I close the cabinet door and even just partially block the front of the Apple TV with my hand (still 4 -8 inches away) the Apple TV stops responding to Samsung TV remote commands. As soon as I lift my hand things work again. You would think this behavior is tied to IR but the testing I mentioned earlier seems to confirm it's all RF to CEC commands and not IR. As another test, I even added an IR blaster repeater extender as a test but that didn't help either! Does the Apple TV 4K have some type of sensor in the front that shuts down receiving CEC commands if it detects being blocked? I'm so confused on what's going on here. Does anyone have any ideas or maybe can confirm even anything above?

Can I run all sources through my receiver and then use my LG OLED TV remote to control all of the components? I have a verrrrry dated AVR with no 4K or HDR support and want to upgrade the AVR to take advantage of my new Chromecast with Google TV and next gen consoles. Currently the AVR is in a cabinet with a door and I've been using a Harmony Hub, but would prefer to use the LG remote for everything as it has quicker access to TV settings.

In theory yes. But your older receiver may not have implemented the CEC protocol fully. I think you will have more luck with newer equipment. I don't know that manufacturers list what commands they implement but the HDMI group does have a routing control command that controls the switching of signal sources.

With CDC do all the remotes control all devices or is there a "master" remote that controls all?
@TheHTGuys
@TheHTGuys 10 месяцев назад
All remotes are supposed to work. There is no master remote. At least that is how its supposed to be. For instance the Apple Remote does not have numbers. But it other functions should work fine.

Components TV: Sony KD-75ZF9 Soundbar: Sony HT-ST5000 Blu-ray - Sony UBP-X500 Sky Q 2TB Amazon Firestick 4K Set up TV (HDMI 3) to Soundbar (HDMI in) eARC activated Sky Q 2TB to Soundbar HDMI in 1 Blu-ray to Soundbar HDMI in 2 Firestick 4k TV HDMI 4 HDMI CEC is turned on for ALL devices Syncing Issue: I am unable to get all devices to turn on/off at the same time as should be the case when using HDMI CEC. It is very much hit and miss and very frustrating. For example when I want to watch TV, I turn on the TV using the TV remote and often get sound no picture or an error message on screen saying ‘No HDMI signal detected...’. Then when trying to shut everything down, all devices go off and then within 30 secs the TV screen comes back on or the sound comes back on. Quite often ‘Playback_1’ appears instead of ‘Sky Q’ in the source menu. All of this is very confusing/annoying for a high end Home Theatre package

There is no way that I know of to add it to your projector via an adapter. It would have to be done through a firmware updaate.
