Hey Bobby. Something else to wear while on a motorized boat is the kill switch tether. I believe it is also now a law.

A few years back I was hunting my lease in 5 degree weather by myself. I busted a hole in front of the blind and made my set. I doubled up the first pair and was very excited. As I went to retrieve the birds, a pane of ice went in between my legs and I fell in ALL the way. My waders filled up, but luckily I was in 4ft of water so I could stand up and I made my way back to the blind. Panic mode started setting in and I was shivering. I got on my quad and raced back to the lodge and luckily was able to get there, strip down, and hop in a sleeping bag to slowly warm up. God was watching over me that day. I'm thankful it wasn't worse. God bless you Bobby! These stories need to be shared for awareness! Thank you!

#4.....snap on the "kill switch" lanyard!!! Glad you mentioned the belt for waders!!! They will float you if they are cinched up tight around your waist As a Firefighter in an area with lots of water, Chesapeake Bay and it's tributaries, we are trained to survive in turnout gear if we fall in the water. It can all be used as flotation gear if you know how. A fact l had reinforced after falling into indoor pool in a smoked out basement. I had trained on what to do, I did what I was trained to do, and I survived to pass the word. Good on you for giving Tyler's story a wide audience!!!

I have a story from not too long ago, lost everything except my life including my dog! Truly life-changing and resulted in losing all of my possessions including the boat itself, etc. I had purchased primarily to take veterans on hunts!! I been a licensed USCG Captain for many years and it still happened to me

On Dec 31, 1998, I was making an afternoon hunt, nothing was flying. So my buddy who was 16 at the time went check out another spot to hunt the next couple of days (water level was changing) on the way back I hit a cypress stump to when the motor kicked up and hit my left leg nearly cutting it off. we tied a shirt and applied a tourniquet. I always have my cell phone and at the time marine radios. I knew we had help coming but still was 45 minutes to an hour before I say someone who wasn't a paramedic. The moral of the story don't ever think it can happen to you, ALWAYS WEAR YOUR LIFE JACKET AND AKE SURE THE KILL SWITCH WORKS. thanks for sharing your friends story and glad he's alright, it only takes a second for you to be as safe as you can and less than a second for something to happen that can change your life....

Bobby- thanx for discussing this! I just got back from ND- I had a sailor swan sailed way out on Devils Lake. It’s North Dakota so you know it’s windy and I’m in a flat bottom duck boat. I wanted to do the right thing and get the bird but the rollers had me worried. Decided on no chances- rolled the waders down to waist, put on a life jacket and attached the kill switch!! So important!!! Thank god he survived!! Oh yeah, I found the swan among the white caps- took a while lol.

Thanks for sharing this Bob. I live in Nebraska right at the Platte/Loup River tail race and it can get very dicey out there and water levels and many other variables can sneak up and take you out. I grew up on these rivers, but heavy vigilance, practice and constant attention to detail can save yourself and others. Sand bottom rivers do some crazy stuff. Holes, sand bars, underwater ledges, ice, trees. I'll definitely make the trip sometime to hunt with you! Thanks for your content and info! 🤘

I’m huge on boat safety ! Me and my bil flipped my Jon boat on water way up north. end of October. I’m in mn. Freezing and freaking out. We made it out. The mud was so deep we stood on the Jon boat while it sank. Nobody around to help us we flipped the boat and got it afloat and bailed it out. Now I own a big boat for hunting. Great reminder as we get late in the season.

BOBBBBYYYY! I am stationed in AK with the CG, and we can not preach enough about wearing a PFD. This guy was in a bad situation and needed to be clipped to the kill switch. I can not preach enough about wearing an inflatable pfd when in the water in waders. Ask for one for Christmas, or a birthday or just buy it, if you are in the water in waders walking or in a boat, wear a PFD!!!! There is still a chance of survival even after we pass out from hypothermia if people can find you.

My taxidermist tells a similar story. They were in a blind with a boat hide on a guided duck hunt in a bay on the Atlantic. It was late in the winter and waters were insanely cold. Sun came up and they noticed the boat 50 yards away; the guide forgot to tie it up. Guide tried to hail a buddy on the radio but couldn’t and finally decided he was going to swim for it. My taxidermist said 20 yards in he just stopped moving all together. Imagine being stuck there unable to help. Horrible. Water is deadly. Two days before my guided hunt in Chincoteague VA last year a few young hunters flipped an overloaded boat close to land, two of the young guys (19-20) died.

Good topic Bobby. Glad he made it through a difficult situation. A few months back had an older duck hunter tell me during general conversation, to be careful in the march, since a lot of duck hunters have drown over the years. I'm a pretty good swimmer. Rescue diver certified through PADI many years ago. Have saved people from drowning before. I'm new to duck hunting, and from my canoe days I always wear my life vest in my boat. (Had hunters ask me if I could swim because I had my PFD on... LOL. I just said a little!) Got a kayak in 2020 because my canoe is a little heavy for me now. Searched all over to find a life vest that was comfortable enough to wear for hours. That really help's. I'm new to Jon boats and long tail mud motors also. I realized the first time out on a lake getting used to my set-up that I'm glad I installed a "Grab Handle" on my boat floor, and that a motor kill switch is a must have! Those long tail props can hurt you bad as they spin in the water at 1600 rpm or more! Personal safety needs to be the first priority, and hunting/fishing after that. Just the other day I vacuumed sealed both my boat and blind first aid kits/fire making tools, since they always like to take on water when I'm in the marsh! Rangers... Lead the Way!

I know life jackets for some people they think it makes them look silly or stupid, but if your on a boat or kayak hunting honestly you just need to put them on. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Don’t worry about what other people think of you. Worry about yourself. If you can promote it to others then thats even better. Stay safe out there y’all

not throwing rocks, good video. One key point is you mentioned when he fell out, the boat kept going. Then you mentioned he held on to a gas tank. If the motor was still running when he fell out, he did not have the kill switch attached to him. I see lots of hunters, even my hunt buddy, not attaching the motor kill switch to their clothing. Do it, even in the shallow marsh. Attach the motor kill switch to your body - life jacket is a great place to hook it to.

Hey bobby, just saying last year last day of duck season it was -15 Celsius up here in Ontario, I was hunting a medium size river with ice flows in it, I went to retrieve a downed duck and lost my footing, I went under water and my wadders filled up and I started going down river with the river, I luckily managed to get to the edge but the scariest moment I have ever had and all it took was a slip of the foot on a rock, and my buddy watching me go down river helpless, so just to let everyone know it takes a split second and your life can change our sport is great but also no joke!!!

It's not just big water that can be dangerous. Last year, I took my canoe out duck hunting on a creek that was maybe 20ft wide and about waist deep. I came up to what amounted to a low-head dam made from sharp rocks. Instead of taking a chance on cutting my canoe on the rocks, I decided to walk the canoe over the rock dam. I checked the water depth with my paddle before getting out so I knew I could stand on the bottom. What I did not know is that the other side of this makeshift dam was dredged out. One step after crossing the dam, I could no longer touch the bottom. I hung on to the side of the canoe and was able to swim my way over to the bank, but it was a little scary there for a minute or two. My brand new CO2 inflatable life vest you might ask? In the canoe.

Thank you Bobby for continuing with these types of videos and of hunter safety. Love the message you continue to preach after all these years through your channel. Another huge piece of advice I was told years ago when I started hunting is carry a sharp pocket knife in your waders for this exact terrible scenario. A couple hundred dollar pair of waders isn’t worth your life. Have a fighting chance to cut off your waders if they fill with water. May help save your life one day. Thank you again

Very good info. Another thing to think about is getting into a stop the bleed course. I’m sure you probably have a first aid kit nearby when your hunting but if you don’t know how to use a tourniquet property and quickly you will watch a guy bleed out in a matter of a couple minutes. Even if you get the tourniquet on quickly your at an elevated risk of hypothermia. If nothing els talk to a local Law Enforcement Officer he should have a good understanding of what kind of and how to use a tourniquet. Stay Safe!

Thanks for this video Bobby. Just about every duck season here in SD. somebody or group die because of an accident involving boats and water. Like you said alot more hunters die involving water than any other cause. I lost a friend in SE Louisiana who died of hyperthermia duck hunting. He was was with a friend deep in the marsh (way before cell phones)they were having an epic hunt as an artic front came through...they stayed too long and the front blew out all the water. No water for the boat..they were stranded. My friend tried to walk to safety and died. The other guy stayed put and was rescued the next evening. Another story involving boats and water or in this case No water but poor life ending decisions.

One of my family friends was out one night for the Minnesota opener a few years back. The season opened at 12 am and they wanted to do that. So it was still super cold. Out in the middle of Mille lacs these three are sitting in the middle of the night, nobody in sight, in snow, when a big wave catches the small John boat they were in. The boat flipped over upside down. Three men out far from shore in freezing temps holding onto the boat. After a while my family friend and his friend decided one stays on the boat and two would try to swim in. They started to swim. All the way back to shore. They made it. This shows the importance of wearing a life jacket. Another thing that they didn’t do is panic. Do not panic what ever you do.

Great to hear everything turned out OK for him. I hunt some pretty large water in Minnesota quite often and too many times I've seen people going out in fairly small boats that they overload with gear. They only have 5 or 6 inches of freeboard left and they can't even get their boat on plane or get the front end up. I run a deep wide 16 foot with a 50 hp on it. Sometimes I can't conceal my boat as well as the guys with smaller shallower draft boats but I know if the weather starts turning ugly if I have to I can make it where I have to go safely and quickly.

If the boat is moving, the life jacket is on and the tether to kill the motor is attached. As un-cool as that sounds. Grew up fishing and hunting on the great lakes and have been ejected from a moving boat in rough water trying to beat a storm that quickly popped up (sudden severe thunderstorms happen fairly often on Erie). I don't mess around with the boat in the water. Even as an experienced guy, a couple years ago I went for a hunt with a buddy who is a big boy (300 lb) and he brought a lot of gear. Pushing the limits of the boat. We didn't realize how rough the water was in the open (early morning hunt, still dark). Couldn't get the boat on plane safely in the dark in the rough water and we didn't notice the boat taking on water as it was splashing up in to the boat behind us. Both of us have hunted out of boats for a long time. It can happen to anyone. Good idea to have a webbing ladder attached to the boat that you can reach if you are in the water. WEAR A WADER BELT. The purpose is to prevent or slow down the water from filling the waders and drowning you. It needs to be snug to work.
@annrobinson4951
@annrobinson4951 Год назад
Well spoken words, Bobby. We had thought that life jackets would be essential perhaps also a whistle around the neck or attach a light up to a marker buoy in the boat to make it easy to spot, or even a flare if it can be contained in a safe pocket or tin. We're sure that more regular sailors may have other suggestions that would be very useful! We're glad everyone came out ok at the end of the ordeal!! Malc and Ann, England xxx ps any water shallow or deep is a potential danger!!!!!

I have lost track but I believe it was 4 years ago possibly five December 26th 37° water temperature 27° outside my two brothers and myself chief our chocolate lab all ended up taking a swim a minimum of 80 yd from the shore. It was one of those situations like you were talking about we had gotten too comfortable we had too much weight in the boat , last my youngest brother had joined us about 10:00 a.m. we went back across Milford to pick him up and on our way back to Curtis is when it happened we were basically in the middle of Curtis Creek right when you first come in never thought it would happen to me I never thought all three of us would live through it but it's changed the way we hunt. We leave that little boat for the shallow water we've now got a 21 ft beast and also a 20 ft with pods. I can't say it enough and I say it to everybody, you never know it can happen to the most experienced duck hunter around we are all close to 50 well we're all over 50 now and we've been hunting since we were kids . Thank you for making this video hopefully you'll save a few lives.

Im on the Illinois river St. Louis is right across the river from me and ive had a close call this season out in the late season and this is in my hometown and my dad was hunting divers one time and jumped out of the boat and hit the worst drop off in grafton and was able to pull hisself back up into the boat and his gun on shoulder and all its very dangerous and i hope that all my fellow hunters have a great and safe season

Great story Bobby! My thing is I never wear my waders inside the boat. I don’t care if it’s 5 degrees out I’ll always take my waders off when riding in a boat. I’m new to duck hunting and don’t know all the etiquettes to it but I don’t think waders filled with water while staying afloat is the best.

Always wear your kill cord, I’ve been thrown out of my boat while not wearing the kill cord and learned the hard way what happens. Pls wear your kill lines.

Not sure if I missed it, but this could be a great time to talk about wearing your kill switch too. If he had been wearing his kill switch, he might’ve been able to climb back in the boat and get to safety a little sooner

I lost a great hunting mentor to a capsized Jon boat. He talked about the hunt for weeks prior in excitement. 2/3 guys in the group did not survive. I’m very cautious on big water/rivers. Stay safe out there this season.

Bob I love all your vids an one day I’ll make my way to sandhill but you made vary good valid points I live in Florida boat almost everyday of my life but the one thing you left out is a major key to boaters safety we all get taught it in the boaters safety class or captains class that all could have been avoided by simply wearing his safety kill switch every boat has them it’s like putting your seatbelt on when you get into a car or truck.. keep up the good work man your killing it out their an always a be safe 🤙

I got my first duck boat just recently and after a few times of taking her out and scouting I told everyone I hunt with its not going back out until I install a killswitch I've noticed how easy it is to want to throw you out... 35hp surface drive and if you cut it to hard or let off while turning the wake will try and knock you right off

Boat motors need a leash and kill switch. Should be mandatory. Like a tread mill.

I was in a similar incident like his on the Chesapeake bay..i preach to my younger hunters to take it easy and it's not a game out out there it's your life you're playing with! Cant say it enough but NO DUCK IS WITH YOUR LIFE OR YOUR FRIENDS!!!!! But thank you bobby for preaching this story and the safety of others!

We had a kid Logan Wood drown last season here in the Charleston area. His family gave away hundreds of automatic life vests and kill switch lanyards.

Flipped my boat last year while duck hunting on a cold windy November morning in Wisconsin. No life jacket on and all I could do was hold onto my overturned boat. Luckily had my cell phone in a neoprene pocket that I was able to call 911 and have the fire and rescue come save me. Ended up with hypothermia but otherwise was ok. Will always wear a life jacket from now on and won’t be going out on extremely rough and windy days.

I'm sure everyone has stories and scary moments such as this. I know I do this past season but I'm not going to post a huge comment telling my story. But everything you said is 1038391939394848% true. No bird or hunt is worth your life or the lives in your boat. PFDs are always always always must. If it's to rough out, foggy, icy, turn around. You can always always find something closer or safer. Let's just say my balls put me in a situation that I wish I hadn't been, wish I turned around once I got out there and realized how rough it was. As a career fireman/emt, I've seen alot of winter drownings and ice rescues, I thought I knew what I could handle, turns out one little mistake could have costs us everything but my training with running boats in rough icy water helped. People don't realize how fast cold water will kill you...minutes. it's no joke. But we all know there's going to be these tough guys that know it all and you can't tell them anything. Be smart everyone, don't put your family through that.

This is a very worthwhile story. Briefly, my cousin, deceased from natural causes, and several buddies experienced a life threatening event on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in the early 60's duck hunting. A series of weather events stranded them in a remote blind with the boat they started in unable to get them out of the blind. Eventually, the Coast Guard was able to rescue them, take them ashore and to a hospital. My cousin never duck hunted again. Your friend is lucky. So, others please take Bobby's friend's story seriously.

Happy that everything turned out ok. One thing when using watercraft and as cumbersome or inconvenient as it may be some manufacturers make them for their products but with a length of vinyl coated spiral cable with enough tensile strength to pull you watercraft look one end with a lockable carabiner for you wader or jacket and the other end looped to the key to the motor. Both secured with crimping ferrels. If to fall out conscience or not your chances in team tremendously retrieving the boat and get back on increase that having a runaway boat and it’s a distance from shore.

Years ago, I striper fished a large mountain lake during the winter months with many mornings being in the 20's. I was younger and didn't give much thought to how quick bad stuff can happen! I would be out there before daylight in freezing temps, throwing a 10' cast net off the front casting deck wearing winter bibs, coat and boots, no PFD and not giving it a second thought. Not a boat in sight. And to make matters worse, I was fishing alone approx. 80% of the time. Looking back, that was stupid on my part. If I would have went over, I would have gone straight to the bottom the way I was dressed. Older and wiser, but now live at the coast and saltwater fish most of the time, not uncommon to go offshore trolling alone. I saw a video a few years ago that completely changed my way of thinking. Two wildlife officers made a video about their experience. They were on a lake driving a CC boat, never saw anything in the water and before they knew it, both had been ejected from the boat, did have a kill switch so the engine cut off. One had inflatable PFD which inflated, the other had a waist belt type inflatable, he slammed the water so hard it ripped the PFD off of him. His partner with PFD swam to him, got him and they swam to shore. After the boat was pulled from the water, they found a dead log wedged between the prop and cavitation plate. Since then, I wear a inflatable PFD when underway, kill switch connected to a velco wrist strap. My wife asked me to wear the PFD all the time when I am fishing alone, so I do. I only remove the PFD when fishing and have someone else on the boat that is capable of operating the boat. Many years ago, there were 2 well known business men in the small town where I grew up, hunting buddies. Both were found drowned when they didn't return from a duck hunting trip. It was thought than one of them went overboard the small duck boat and the other guy tried to save him.

I knew a Guy who told me about a friend that fell on his arrow, deer hunting.had it knocked, and stalking he died because the arrow went through the vein that goes by the femur and he bled to death. I My self fell through ice hunting duck's it took 3 week's for me to be able to move My arms because they swelled up and my feet turned northern mallard orange and my socks stuck to my feet, my friend had to go into servival mode and helped me get back to the shore by drilling me to not stop because he couldn't get out in that ice and for real I knew he would have done exactly what he said. I had to walk a few Miles wet and frozen my clothes frozen to my body. He could see me and the truck every time I fell down he yelled and I struggled but hurt Frost bitten and all my feet were turning Black a few Days afterwards. But I recovered. Thank the god
