The song is basically about him growing up working class/poor and seeing no way out of it, going down the wrong path etc. It's one of those generational working class anthems.

I came here to find a comment like this. And as a fellow Geordie, this is the exact reason why people turn to this shit. We live in rundown towns with struggling families and the majority of kids you used to go to school with are that much of arseholes to you that you can't stand up for yourselves. However some of these arseholes go through this shit as well and go at people to distract themselves from their struggles of their families. Sometimes some of them would have to turn to crime in order to support their families because they can't get the financial support they need. This shit happens. And what disgusts me is that people think you're a dirty begging leftist instead of understanding your struggles. I ain't a fan of Sam Fender's musical style though, however the story just hits home and shows the dark side of the north.

I read up on what this song is about. His Mum was a nurse for 30 yrs or so and she had to give up working because she got fibromalgia which is a form of MS, an invisible illness. The DWP is the Department for Work and Pensions who decides who gets benefits when they aren't able to work, apparently they went to court three times to prove she wasn't fit to work just as they could get benefits and survive in a hard lined working class environment. I'm from Ashington originally, which isn't too far away from North Shields so similar hardships hit both places. For me it was the coal mines and lack of jobs, Shields would have been the fishing boats and shipyards closing down. It would have been a very frustrating time dealing with the DWP and a hard life having little money but also these lyrics tell of life struggles being a teenager, trying to fit in, trying to find yourself, trying to be someone, watching your mum suffer, wishing she would be heard, understood, helped. Very tough life for a teenager who doesn't know who he is or even his place in life, still figuring it out. For us local North East folk will know of a film called Billy Elliott, it sets the scene of a hard life during the Miners Strikes in the North East and times were desperate. This song paints that picture in my head, while his voice reminds me of a certain Jimmy Nail style vocal. Another awesome Geordie artist. I'm so proud of this kid. Writing so autobiographically at this age shows such maturity and skill. I hope his career is long and successful 🙏

As a 40+ year old pretty big Oasis fan I can honestly say this guy is class. And I've seen many folk from age groups above mine say the same. His music is just relatable, it's not really like singing about modern young person issues as such, but more issues that everybody can identify with when growing up, regardless of what generation you're in.

It's his lyrics, at first I didn't like him, when he came out with hypersonic missiles I thought it was another pumped out pop artist, while that's still true in some way, I feel his lyrics are what got me, his music is still simple yet catchy, I don't normally like anything that comes out in the charts, but this guy has won me over and I'm seeing him at the end of this month

The bass player, Tom, is a class, chilled out guy. Even after they were smashing the charts he was still living in a shared flat with my mate. We'd have predrinks around mine or around theirs with other friends then a night out. He wasn't a big time Charlie at all, he'd never mention that he was Sam Fender's bass player. If he was asked he'd say he's into music but never more details unless pressed or until one of us points it out. Great bloke.

This song is so relatable for young people in the UK. Growing up, especially in a working class environment, has it’s tough moments. Sam and the boys have written an anthem which represents the experience of a whole generation. A true voice in music which talks about important issues and represents the youth of Britain.

Hi Guys Im from the same city as Sam Fender. Newcastle upon Tyne in the northeast of England. Its a tuff industrial city proud of its heritage, of hard working minors, ship builders and steel workers, (it ain’t Santa Monica!) Sam is from the same 10 mile radius as, Mark Knopfler, Dire Straits, Sting, Brian Johnson, Brian Ferry, Eric Burdon (The Animals). So we are used to talented rock singers and writers, but Sam Fender is a new breed from this area. I am 56 yrs old but his lyrics could be from my childhood. They are very raw, honest and personal. At 27/28 yrs, he is not a kid anymore but still looks it. He is a class act!👍

Oasis fan 🙋🏻‍♂️ incidently I used to work with Sam's aunt (I'm a Geordie). It was after the Brit Awards win a few years ago for the "up and coming" award and she mentioned that her nephew had won it, I saw the winners a couple of days earlier and said I recognised the name when she told me, she was really proud of him - she'll be prouder now! If Sam is anything like his aunt then he must be a canny person (canny is geordie for "really good/nice" - can also mean "quite" as in "that's canny steep" - that's quite steep or "that's a canny bit" - that's quite a lot).

Sam is from Newcastle Upon Tyne, North Shields (Northern England) he's a Geordie, he still drinks in his local pub whenever he is home. He won a Brit Award this year give it to his local pub (where he used to work) to use as a beer pump along with a previous award! He does lot's of stuff for local charities etc..
@daiorama3196

I saw Sam a couple of times when he was still playing small capacity venues. The talent was pretty obvious, from the writing through to the performance, even though he lacked a bit of confidence on stage. You could hear the Jeff Buckley influence on the quieter tracks, but it was the Springsteen influence that shone out. There was no Sax player ( Johnny Blue hat was yet to join) but you could literally hear the parts where the Sax should be on songs like "The borders" for example. The lyrical content being semi-autobiographical and rooted in his local area was also very "Brucelike." The Fender name is genuine and that sums the lad up, every song is genuine, heartfelt, honest and brimming with passion. Such a change from the mass marketed ephemeral flotsam that passes for music in the mainstream.

Love coming back to this video. You’ll notice a lot of the fans in the crowd AND often band members including Sam at gigs wearing Newcastle United Football Club shirts (black and white gear the sax player is wearing). In the North East of England, particularly Newcastle, they’re extremely passionate about their football team. And equally as passionate about the likes of Sam. It all moulds into one. Passion for the City and proud of being ‘Geordies’. Working class ship building city. Genuinely lovely people as well up there!

I'd definitely recommend you listen to 'Angel in Lothian' or his tunel cover of Springsteen's 'Dancing in the dark'. I'm seeing him live again in Liverpool on the 21st March and then again a week or so later in his hometown Newcastle. Sam definitely has something of a Springsteen vibe about him. It’s a guy with a guitar from a working-class background, just singing relatable songs about his life. I watched the movie Blinded by the Light just before discovering Fender, and I didn’t really connect with it too much because I’m not that into Springsteen (great artist and songwriter, just not for me). But when I started listening to Sam’s music, I finally understood what the main character was feeling about Springsteen. That connection, it made sense.

The lad is absolutely top notch. Im from the other side of the river, South Shields.. and there's just something about the area. We keep producing these massive talents, perhaps its because we are constantly being kicked and held back, the adversity breeds talent thing. only a small area but Sting, Knopfler, Fender and it applies to comedy as well with ross noble, sarah millican and chris ramsey. If you can, watch the video of him turning up on breakfast tv.. still mortal drunk after Newcastle United got new owners. its marvellous, edgy tv haha

Wolf Alice recently won a brit award for their album Blue Weekend, which I recommend; you should probably listen to the whole album if you do a reaction because all the songs are so different though

Check out the amateur video of him doing Dancing in the Dark, no post production tinkering proper live, just him and his guitar with the beautiful P90 pick ups it's fantastic!

Sam is absolutely brilliant and a lot of his songs are based on his very left leaning politics. His sax player is one of his best friend's.

Alice Phoebe Lou, She live, is outstanding, if Alice fitted the pop glamour music scene The kid would match any current young female singers, But she is more the cool kid next door living it her way She is an amazing song over 70m views
