I was told to have a listen to #SamFender by a few of you in the comments...so I did and I was pleasantly surprised. I noticed a particular musical device he uses in his song #SeventeenGoingUnder that I'm really enjoying at the moment. However, as always, tell me what you think!
Here is a link to the song I was listening to: • Sam Fender - Seventeen...

His sound is like a mix between The War on Drugs and Springsteen, seasoned with Geordish charm and roughness. Killer artist

I definitely agree with that, I hear a little Killers influence as well(maybe?). Just started listening to Sam Fender when he was opening for Liam Gallagher.

His biggest influence after Springsteen is Jeff Buckley. That’s the closest artist to him vocally. I also read somewhere he learned his vocal style from Jeff.

Justin! Fan of The Darkness from the early days, and I’ve got to say it’s nice just listening to you talking about music, being the calming, humorous guy you are, and being a casual guitar player it’s nice seeing you support your views with a few strums here and there - I like that kind of stuff. Keep it up mate, if you can bear it! As for Sam, likewise I know f-all about him, but thanks for your recent Greta Van Fleet video - somehow they passed me by too. Ps. Interesting guitar - slim body, better for air travel?

North Shields lad who played Tynemouth Surf Cafe - which I even bladdy did - and I STILL took until 17 Goin Under to give him a go. Really like it and he’s class too. Really happy for his success. I assumed I wouldn’t like his music at all for some reason and I let my silly prejudice keep me from him all the while. What a silly arse. I like how you analyse the pops, J-Haw.

What does it say that I'm 63 and I immediately connected with Seventeen Going Under... Sam is a once in a generation artist who's lyrics speak of the melancholy of youth and capture a genuine feeling a ton of people can relate to, I think he's brilliant.

Although he (thankfully) doesn't try to dress like Springsteen, you can hear big influences right through his music. The style of lyrics even to the Max-like snare. He does a few Springsteen covers live which are great and with his own twist. Really refreshing to hear something with a bit more imagination in the charts and mainstream radio.
@hollyblue28
@hollyblue28 2 года назад
Yeah I can hear the Springsteen influence all over his music, that note he hits on the last repeat of the lyric '17 going under' at the end of the song is pure Springsteen. He even overtly references Springsteen with 'Mary' in the lyrics of Last to Make It Home, which I'm certain isn't a coincidence given the signifcane of the name in Springsteen's songs

I am also in the US and just starting to check him out. To my ear, he carries a very heavy debt to the Killers Sam's Town era. I don't mean that in a negative way. It is a very American, anthemic style. Yearning and chiming away. His music and songwriting is moving.

You should really hear 'Dead boys' if you haven't already, he's from north Tyneside a stone's throw away from myself in Sunderland a pretty bleak part in terms of development and opportunities compared to the south and the song is about the high levels of male suicide, especially up here in the northeast. The video to go with the song and the intro song "Prelude" they did for the song (both on his on RU-vid I believe) are just beautiful. You should also check out another not as popular (outside of central and Eastern Europe) British pop band, 'Hurts'. Their best two albums (in my opinion) are their first (Happiness. 2010) and their latest (Faith. 2020)

Yeah Springsteen is probably his biggest inspiration actually. Sam refers to himself as an "Americana artist with a British voice" and also covers Bruce as well as using Born to Run as his walkout song. I think Bruce is his favourite Also his new album cover is literally designed to look like Bruce's album, Nebraska. His songwriting is definitely inspired by springsteen, they have that same detailed poetic gritty lyrics style
@Joe-vc6bf

I thought it was weird how Hawkins essentially rubbished Springsteen and then went on to wax lyrical about Fender's poetic lyrics. Springsteen is one of the greatest poets in music.

I took my 12-year-old son to his very first gig in March, to a Sam Fender concert, The Point Depot Dublin, 12000 people, all young, all losing their shit, beautiful really, you only ever get to attend your first convert once, my son loved it, lost his shit and has stolen both of my CDs to his bedroom, job done.

Saw him in 2019 in Manhattan in a small venue which sadly won’t be the case too long since he’s getting traction to be like the likes of the kooks and two door cinema club type of venues in Manhattan. I was blown away by Sam Fender's "Dead Boys" video when I first saw it. At a time when pop music had reached an all-time low - nothing but electronic sounds, autotune, and stupid lyrics - here's this good-looking kid with a modern-sounding rock band singing (with a great voice) about the high number of suicides with kids from his hometown. And that was his FIRST single. I'm glad to see he's went on to enjoy the success he deserves. Justin I will definitely follow your channel. Hot Cakes is one of my favorite albums!
