Goodrow is a 4th liner that gets 3-4 minutes a game. Murphy is a defenseman that logs 20+ minutes a game. How is fighting a bum like Goodrow equitable? It puts Chicago down a good defenseman for 5 minutes while Goodrow gets 5 which he would have done on the bench anyway.

The question still stands which you failed to answer. Goodrow plays 3-4 minutes a game. Murphy logs 20+minutes. How is taking a fight with a scrub benefit Murphy or his club? He's been a 4th line guy his entire career with his best season in San Jose with 24 points. Trade deadline depth pick up for Tampa Bay and was lucky to be a part of the back to back championships. Hes played over 400 minutes this year and has a grand total of 4 points. Comparatively, Murphy, a defensemen, is averaging around 13. Cup wins are a stupid stat for looking at individual players

Perfect example of top line players are coached not to fight bottom liners.. for the simple reason that's what bottom line players try to do to get you off the ice for 5 minutes or so. Top line players are most effective on the ice and not in the box, which could cost a goal and worse a game or 2 points.

Here’s some more for you: during TB’s 2020 run in the bubble, Goodrow was absolute trash at shooting-only 1 goal in 57 shot attempts! That’s a 1.7% conversion rate. Why did they even let him shoot? He missed 11 times, got blocked 14 times, (so he failed to get the puck to the net 44% of the time) and the goalies made 31 saves-a 96.9 SV% against him. Similar story the next yr’s playoffs: 2 goals on 51 shot attempts. He was so bad. He also lost far more faceoffs than he won in both playoffs: 93W-112L, 52W-78L. Again, why did they let him try? His only redeeming stat was the # of hits he took on other players (171 in 43 playoff games for TB) but duh, he’s supposed to use his body as a wrecking ball because he’s a goon and sucks at everything else.

respect the hell out of Murphy for this. Fighting is an archaic part of the sport, it happens here and there and is not the end of the world if it energizes your team, but simply not wanting to fight needs to be a good enough reason. Remember how many kids are looking up to you!
Why are people acting like Murphy is so good and important to the hawks he’s barely a top 7 dman. Ya their team is shit but Murphy would barely crack a top 6 on most teams and goodrow is a solid 3rd 4th liner. Not really that crazy for them to fight.
